A Must Own Book for Serious Residential Do-It-Yourselfers.......2006-06-17

This book is an excellent reference book for use in designing, planning, and building a new house or remodeling an existing one. Whenever I plan on doing something on the house, I double check with this reference before finishing my designs and plans. It's a must own book for serious do-it-yourselfers.

Readers' Digest Version of AGS.......2005-04-15

Although these editions change little, this review is based upon AGS 10th Ed. & AGSRC 2003.

Negative:
This is bascially a regurgitation of the more complete Architectural Graphics Standards, distilled to a "residential" focus but appears as volumous because some details have been photo-enlarged (in poor-average quality). Few, if any new residential details/information has been provided.

Positive:
Those ONLY interested in residential construction and NOT requiring a full brace of ALL details will find this quite a good value - compare its price to Architectural Graphics Standards.

Recommendation:
Anyone in construction should have one, but not both of these books as a prime resource. The content does improve every year, although some years it's like watching grass grow.

Challenge:
IF there are numerous portions of the Residential version that are unique and new to it, exclusive of passages in the larger AGS version - I would really appreciate a review that contains how to locate these passages, as I've spent enough time trying to find them. If enough of these exist, it would give thought of updating this resource once in awhile.

One volume encyclopedia.......2003-11-25

Experienced readers will benefit from its brief summaries and drawings covering the broadest range of topics imaginable. Some economizing is evident in the paper and printing quality, some of the drawings look 50 years old, but there is lots of reference information, like span tables, solar position data, etc. Probably not the last word on every topic, but still worth consulting.

A wonderful resource.......2003-03-27

Following in the terrific legacy of the benchmark Architectural Graphic Standards book, this edition clearly makes building for residences an easier task. I've found innumerable details that I've used in my residential practice on a daily basis, details not found in other reference books. Of particular help are the pages that give an overview of how parts of a house interconnect with each other, such as foundation-to-framing. Also, there is a wealth of info on HVAC, new window technology and other things I've found very, very helpful.

The reprsentation was not clear this is a reproduction of a 1935 published book. This is not usefull in todays building enviroment.

A must have for anyone working or having an interest in architecture. As a companion to the current edition, it provides guidelines for laying out domestic serving pantries and other forgotten features. Should one wish, it also provides superior graphics as models for fixture symbols.

I am a Civil Engineer ( 25 years of design ) and I have found this book excellent. I have worked with the previous edition and the new one is more complete. Is a a book rich of details useful for the profession.

I agree with the other reviews so I won't duplicate that. The author really should've gotten his facts -- and spelling -- right before publishing. He had a great opportunity to put out a good and wanted product, but he blew it. I was thinking maybe it's better than nothing, but no, I'd rather have nothing. Thank goodness there are more things available now.

Pretty pictures; not terribly informative.......2002-02-19

I've been told Steele's take on history is somewhat spotty; I'm not an expert so I can't confirm or deny that. To be honest, I've never even read the text. But the photos are numerous and great; there are over 125 full shirts in full color, many of them full-page as well. That makes the book perfect as an painting resource, which is what I use it for. If you're a fabric designer, costumer or artist, or just dreaming of the islands in their jet-set days of Lana Turner and Elvis Presley, this book is a good resource.

Great pictures, bad historically.......1999-12-15

Apparently the author was a collector on the US mainland since he apparently did not do much historical research in Hawaii. The dates are usually off about ten years. Also from his book you'd think all Hawaii produced were rayon shirts when cottons, in Asian prints, have been most common!

Historically, this is terribly inaccurate.......1999-02-17

Unfortunately, many of the dates presented in this book are wrong, and this book has perpetuated several myths and inaccuracies with regard to the history and evolution of the Aloha shirt. I am a historian who does research on Hawaii, and am curator of the world's largest collection of Hawaiian apparel. It is sad to say that this book and others written by collectors have proven to be a real problem because whatever research Mr. Steele did, was not only incomplete but flawed. As the first book published on the topic of Hawaiian clothing, this book is often cited and the inaccuracies are accepted as correct when they are not.

This is one of Dick Irvin's first outings as an author. The book details his rise as an broadcaster and his life in hockey from childhood to the present. While this is not quite as entertaining as some of Irvin's later books, it is a good compilation of stories which will hold the interest of Irvin and Hockey Night in Canada fans everywhere

A lot of details, few insights.......2002-11-21

This book has been originally writtem 20 years ago and today is reproposed in a new package. Being brief the problems with this book are essentially two:

1) the author has a tendency to get lost in details many of them insignificants for the story, and some of them plain wrong (and the author could have corrected them).

2) the book is in the stream of war histories watched only by one side. It is interesting to note that the author never mentions the unusefulness of the battle of El Alamein: it is in fact well known that the Torch landings will have forced the Axis army to withdrawn anyway and therefore the British could have attacked the Axis much more easily. But this it would not have been a British-only victory, but an Anglo-American victory.

Therefore it seems a little pretentious to call this book the "definitive" history of the western desert war. Given the boredom caused by the plethora of details, it is more likely the "bed-time" history of desert war.

The Ferret vs. the Fox.......2002-01-10

"Montgomery and Alamein" is the third volume of a three-volume set by Barrie Pitt published by Cassell & Co. in London. Pitt is no stranger to war or the theater about which he writes, having served in both the European and Middle East theaters in World War II.

After the quick and unexpected fall of Tobruk on June 21, 1942, to a carefully orchestrated air and ground attack by Rommel's Afrika Korps, the German advance in North Africa once again threatened the British hold on Egypt and the Suez Canal. Churchill flew to Cairo on August 3, split the Middle East command by creating Eighth Army, relieved Auchinleck and Ritchie, and placed Gen. Harold Alexander in command of Middle East Command and Lt. Gen. Bernard L. Montgomery in command of Eighth Army. Throughout the remainder of 1942, Montgomery led his Eighth Army to successive victories against the Desert Fox.

Montgomery had his work cut out for him, but he and his men inflicted a defeat on German forces at Alam Halfa on September 7, and thereafter methodically pressed the Afrika Korps back toward El Alamein. Rommel, who could no longer hope to regain the offensive in North Africa, now found his forces practically surrounded at El Alamein. From October 23 to November 4 the battle raged, and when it was over the Axis had been decisively defeated, their losses staggering. It was a prelude to Allied landings farther west on November 8, and the success of Soviet forces against the German 6th Army at Stalingrad in February the following year.

Thoroughly researched and written in a delightful, fast-paced style, Pitt gives readers their money's worth. I came away from "Montgomery and Alamein" with a far better appreciation of the man who arguably was Britain's most irascible commander, but also the most successful. It was once said of Montgomery that he was "quick as a ferret; and about as likeable." But in war there isn't room for nice guys. Montgomery knew that.

In the end, one has to give credit to Cassell & Co. for introducing all three volumes of their "Crucible of War" series on North African fighting-you won't want to buy one without purchasing the other two.
