Book Description
The Magic Kingdom is a full-length investigation of the life of Walt Disney, arguably the principal architect of mass culture in our time. By mid-century, "Uncle Walt" had become an American icon and was universally acknowledged as the spokesman for the American way of life; yet, paradoxically, he was instrumental in changing our social assumptions. Probing Disney's public life as a creative entrepreneur, Steven Watts argues that Disney reflected a central irony of modern American culture: while proclaiming a genuine allegiance to the values of an earlier age (self-reliance, the work ethic, the culture of domesticity, sexual inhibition), he also took the lead in creating the modern world of consumer self-fulfillment. His great creations - from Mickey Mouse to Disneyland - embody the transformation of American popular culture, moving from the satirical edge of what Watts calls the "sentimental populism" of the Depression era to the uncritical, celebratory "sentimental libertarianism" of the Cold War. Watts also digs deeply into Disney's private life, investigating his roles as husband, father, and brother and providing fresh insight into his peculiar psyche - his genuine folksiness and warmth, his domineering treatment of colleagues and friends, his deepest prejudices and passions. Full of colorful sketches of daily life at the Disney Studio and tales about the creation of Disneyland and Disney World, The Magic Kingdom offers a definitive view of one of the most influential Americans in the twentieth century.

Best All Around Disney Book.......2007-05-15
I've read the Gabler, Thomas, and Manheim (Quest for Community) books, and about 3 other books on Walt, and this was the best. Fantastic!
The Best Biography of Walt Disney Hands Down.......2003-09-26
Easily the best biography out there on Walt Disney hands down. It will never be topped. It neither kisses his hiney as Bob Thomas' studio sanctioned biography does, nor does it discount him as merely a low brow populist (as Richard Schickel did), nor lies about him as some sort of communist spy in order to sell books. Not only is this biography even handed, but Mr. Watts makes brilliant connections between Walt and his time that no other biographer had the insight to do. This is a fair, balanced, well organized, incredibly entertaining biography that really brings the real Walt Disney to life. Steven Watts is a genius biographer.
Walt Disney would have approved it!.......2003-06-12
I have read 4 biographies about this man ("An American Original," "The Disney Version," Mosley's "Disney's World: A biography," Eliot's "Hollywood's Dark Prince") and now I realize that I should have acquired this book before, so I wouldn't need to read all of the above stated books.
This book provides Walt's personal story, studio development, good and bad critics, Disney's place in history and his shaping of American culture. It is not biased, but gives a balanced view on a man and his company. It made me believe in this book, since I was very sceptical towards "truths" written in other Walt Disney biographies. In those, Walt was portrayed as either a perfect person, or a villain of the 20th century.
The Magic Kingdom is the balanced truth and the best biography of a man that shaped American culture without a doubt.
most in-depth biography yet.......2002-05-11
far and away the most in-depth biography ever written about a truly great great man. While reading it, you get the sense that you are there, shoulder to shoulder with Walt Disney while he and his brother, and his employees build an amazing company. Also provides the context wherein the company was being formed, and the trials and trevails that preceded building this great company. Any Disney fan would NOT be disappointed.
And now the Disney-sanitized academic view.......2001-09-30
I've probably read every book on Walt Disney. Most are carefully vetted by the studio and manage to tell exactly the same story. There's nothing wrong with that--there are no lies, just spin. Some of the books that are less "controlled" are more fun, however, like Jack Kinney's memoir "Walt Disney and Other Assorted Characters." Some that shake off the Disney thought police do so out of malice--Marc Eliot's "biography" of Walt Disney was deliberately mean-spirited and inaccurate, in my opinion.
In the last 20 years, we've seen a new breed of Disney book emerge that puts Walt Disney in context of the larger cultural picture. These volumes are dense and uninviting, but their view in general is that Walt was an uneducated slug and the people who bought his schlock were no better than he. "Disney Discourse," for example, or "Vinyl Leaves." Well, this book appears to be the Disney people's answer: An imposing academic look at the cultural history of the Walt Disney machine by a bona fide academic who has been lavished with information from the studio's archives.
Personally, I think the truth is inbetween. If all you read are this book and Bob Thomas' excellent biography, you'll have the facts and the current Disney Company spin, but you'll be missing the healthy cynic's view. Leonard Mosley's biography, "Disney's World" or Richard Schickel's "The Disney Version" supply that, while still admiring their subject. Or, for an academic view of the creation of Disneyland that's less Disneyized than Watts, try Karal Ann Marling's "As Seen on TV."

Book Description
In the twenty-five years since Garrison Keillor first brought it to life, the rural Minnesota town of Lake Wobegon has become a national treasure. In this lavishly produced photography book, word and image combine to illuminate the real Minnesota town-life, landscapes, and people who inspired its creation.
Taking us on a tour of Stearns County, the Minnesota county he deems most "Wobegonic," Keillor meditates on the origins of the place where, as a young writer, he found the inspiration for his fiction and his radio show. As an artful evocation of Keillor's beloved invention, Richard Olsenius's elegantly composed black-and-white photographs of rural Minnesota capture the dignity of his subjects, the beauties of the landscape as well as the enduring values and eccentricities of the communities rooted there. Photographs of the high school homecoming court, the tidy, austere working farm, the cozy villages, and summer barbecue at the lake are a visual feast for Lake Wobegon devotees as well as a moving tribute for anyone who feels the emotional claim of rural America.
A unique collaboration featuring more than eighty photographs reproduced in duotone with extended captions written by Keillor, In Search of Lake Wobegon is a beautifully produced work for the millions of radio listeners and book lovers who want to visit Wobegon again and again.

Excellent book!.......2003-12-09
I was what you would call a "Noobie" to all of Garrison's work until recently. I picked up this book at a college library after speaking to my mother about the Minnesota author project I was recently assigned. She was familiar with his work and suggested that I look into it....so I did. I never thought that this would open up such big can of worms, and I mean this in a good sense. After reading the book from cover to cover, I went on the internet to find out more about Garrison's work and turned up some very interesting search results. I then read it again and now I guess you could say that I'm hooked on the Lake Wobegon saga and I am planning on picking up a couple of his earlier writings related to Lake Wobegon.
I really enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend this book to anyone who has vast, little, or no knowledge of Lake Wobegon.

Nostalgia at its "Best".......2003-02-08
Fans of Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" are already an imaginative sort. We know what Arlene Bunsen looks like, or Pastor Inquist. We've got a good idea how Roger Hedlund has been rotating his crops, and the main goings on on Main Street. We don't need pictures of this area because we already know it by heart--we've seen it on the radio. This book does exactly what it should...it doesn't dispel our images of Lake Wobegon, but gives us pictures of its neighbors and people living their lives in rural Minnesota. All the images are sepia toned. With a few exceptions, the subjects are unposed and candid, getting ready for the prom, or readying the field for corn.
The composition of the shots are superb. The short prologue gives a first person retelling of how Keillor invented the town that "time forgot and the decades cannot improve." That introduction, however, is so short that it's almost unfair to say that this is a Garrison Keillor book. He essentially wrote the foreword (although it's not titled that way), and the pictures tell the real story.
My only disappointment is that there isn't any color. Certainly sepia tones give us nostalgia the way we'd like to remember it, but sunset on a farm is something you can't appreciate in shades of brown. Rural life has its monochromatic moments, to be sure, but there's enough color and life to help us remember that not everything is nostalgia.
This gripe doesn't detract from the beauty of this book, though. Thankfully we never see Lake Wobegon, only hints and shadows. It allows us to preserve our preconceptions, but gives us a deeper feeling of connection with the area. If you're a fan of APHC, you probably already own this book (or you should). If not, take a look at a lifestyle that might be foreign to you.
Land of Lakes.......2003-02-03
From the Central Minnesota prairie, in beautiful black and white pictures and picturesque prose, here is the Genesis of Garrison Keilor's magical mythical Lake Wobegon, site of "A Prairie Home Companion." Here we get to *see* the strong women, good-looking men, and above average children of and for whom he speaks on Saturday nights. Accompanying Richard Olsenius' stunning photography (how can the viewer not be deeply moved by the picture of the veterans at the St. Wendell cemetery on Memorial Day?) are excerpts from the Radio Show, interviews with inhabitants, and essays and musings from Keilor - like this:
"Culture isn't decor, it's what you know before you're twelve. It sticks with you all your born days. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. You can try to wrestle free of it, like those geese who trail the V-formation, trying to look as if they aren't part of this bunch, as if flying south were a personal decision on their part, but your feint towards independence only makes it clearer who you really are. Some people like hot dish better if it's called cassoulet, or pot roast if it's pot-au-feu. Fine. Suit yourself. Same difference."
Whatever you call those culinary delights, you'll like this book. Come see Father Kleinschmidt's Annual Blessing of the Snowmobiles. Ja, you betcha! Reviewed by TundraVision.
Big Hit.......2002-05-16
This was purchased as a Mother's Day gift for my Mother-In-Law and it was a big hit. She really loved it - as did my Father-In-Law. Garrison Keillor already seems to be a big hit with the over 50 crowd and this book fits perfectly with his style.

Book Description
In Against a White Sky, Laurie Stapleton reveals her experiences with honesty and humor as a gay high school teacher in an "All-American" city. Having spent most of her young adult life in Santa Cruz, California a beach town accepting of its large lesbian community Laurie relocates to the more conservative San Joaquin Valley to enroll in an accelerated teacher credentialing program. There, Laurie discovers that she is the only woman who regularly (well, always) wears slacks. She decides she'd better change the way she dresses, walks and talks to feel socially comfortable and maybe even safe.
Laurie becomes certified to teach public high school within a year. Mindful of recent bouts with poverty and low self-esteem, she accepts the first teaching offer she receives a public high school deeper in the heart of the valley, in a city voted "All-American." Her relocation doesn't sit too well with Laurie's girlfriend back in Santa Cruz, who says to Laurie, "You don't look like you anymore."
Despite her struggle to sway students' and teachers' attention from her sexual identity, they seem to "know" anyway, as evidenced by homophobic slurs she hears in the school halls, and snickers from the student-athletes she coaches. Eventually she asks herself the hard questions: why did she choose to live and teach in a town in which she is at best ignored, and at worse harassed, because of her sexual orientation? What is the meaning behind the irony that, as she helps her students discover their voices, she is silencing her own?
Customer Reviews:
Finding Her Place.......2004-08-19
Against A White Sky is Laurie Stapleton's account of her difficulties fitting into the public school system as a gay person trying (though not wanting) to remain in the closet. The three years covered in this book, her year in a Central California university teaching credential program and her first two years as a high school English teacher and coach in a small, agricultural town, show Stapleton attempting to keep a secret that seems to seep out of her pores. As a lesbian with some characteristics society deems "masculine," she endures stares ("Is that a he or a she"), name-calling by community members and students, and even an attempt to strip her of her job - a job she does well - because of "suspicions" about her sexual preference. Stapleton is also frank about some of the little discomforts, most notably the fit and look of "feminized" outfits for someone with her height and frame, the utter silliness of having to pretend to be looking for an attractive man while out on the town with a friend who doesn't know she's gay, and the effort it takes to remember the made-up guy's name she came up with for her female lover.
The beauty of the book lies in Stapleton's honesty about her pain, her willingness to be specific about its causes, and the love she has for teaching and her students. As she chronicles her classroom and coaching experiences, it becomes clear that her sexual preference transcends - or, actually, is simply irrelevant to - the devotion she brings to the individuals under her care. As an added bonus for those who live in California's Central Valley are the eloquently-described settings.
In fact, setting is what Against A White Sky is all about: Stapleton's journey to find her place. As much as there is to learn from people like Laurie who, closeted or not, are working right next to hetereosexuals, the book has much to say about loneliness, fitting in, and most importantly, finding ways to like oneself. Laurie Stapleton's journey was not just one of how to overcome difficulty from without but also of how to find "home" within herself to take with her wherever she goes.
Learning Experience.......2004-07-26
This book should be required reading for anyone entering the teaching profession. Not only will it facilitate an understanding of curriculum, teaching processes, and biases, but it will open our eyes {and hearts} a little bit wider to how we can, and should reach students. This book will also, hopefully, help us all to see how we accept ourselves and present our authentic selves, is more important than how others view us. It is a total learning experience along with the author.
Real Teaching.......2004-07-10
This book gave me a sense of shared intimacy. It seems that Laurie Stapleton; the fun, intelligent, engaging teacher, could easily be a separate person from Laurie Stapleton; the witty, deep-thinking, and sometimes tormented lesbian. The beauty is that the two combined are important components of the whole, special human being, and as I watched her learn self-respect and self-acceptance, I saw her grow wise before my eyes. Against The White Sky stimulates perspective and empathy, and it offers true inspiration for not only teachers, but for students, as well. It kindles hope for not only gays and lesbians, but for women, minorities, and every educator who faces the intrinsic challenges of the profession. I wish the author continued strength and courage.
Deeply Touching.......2004-07-08
I could not put down this deeply touching memoir of the struggles a young woman must go through to be able to teach. The conservative community in which she works judges her not on the quality of her teaching ability, but on her looks and mannerisms, things students always overlook if the teacher is any good at all. Her wonderful friends help her get through the year. This book is full of wisdom.
Open, honest and a great read for everyone.......2004-06-24
This book is important for everyone to read -- whether or not they are sympathetic to the homosexual's struggle. It is a poignent story about a human being and her dreams. There are stories here that everyone can relate to. I have laughed and cried while reading this, because Laurie relates eloquently the pain of relationships that don't work out and the humor that goes on in a classroom full of wise-cracking adolescents. Her writing draws pictures of small California towns and the variety of people that populate them. A great book by a very strong and intelligent lady.

Book Description
Now revised and updated, the comprehensive program for restoring vitality, sexuality, and health using natural hormones-just the ones each individual woman needs, and just the amount she needs.
The decision of whether or not to use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause is perhaps more controversial-and more confusing-than ever before. The HRT Solution provides a balanced discussion of the issues and, most important, offers a choice that goes beyond "yes" or "no."
The authors explain the shortcomings of the conventional, "cookie-cutter" approach to HRT, which gives women standard-ized amounts of synthetic hormone substitutes or animal-derived hormone products. Instead, they recommend a program designed to meet each woman's particular needs. Their approach emphasizes the importance of testing and ongoing monitoring to determine precisely which hormones a woman may want to supplement. The solution lies in the prescription of individualized doses of custom-made natural hormones-exact matches for the ones a woman's body produces. The HRT Solution makes it possible for each woman to maintain a hormonal balance that is optimal for her body and her well-being, without the unpleasant side effects and potential for long-term health problems associated with conventional HRT.

Well researched common sense solutions to age old problems........2002-10-13
The Authors are to be congratulated for implementing practical applications of some difficult and highly sophisticated science, and for presenting their program in easy-to-read everyday language. This will be helpful to legions of women everywhere. The message is illustrated by 25 real life case studies containing various manifestations of the basic problem. These will be readily recognisable by any sufferer who can benefit from the approach described. This approach is self evidently logical and straightforward, and may leave British readers wondering why it is only in the USA that the technology has been developed and exploited to offer a convenient and readily available service. The answer has many facets, and is almost as complicated as the technology itself. However, astute and perceptive readers will find the book contains a number of clues, notably from Chapter 10 (Getting Started) onwards. In addition, supporting information is to be found in books on Menopause by Dr.John Lee, and on Osteoporosis by Dr.Alan Gaby.
Armed with these volumes readers should engage in some determined lobbying.
General Practitioners and Consultants plus Members of Parliament and the Department of Health all need to be convinced that HRT using bio-identical hormones must be taken seriously. As with many medical matters the science is not wholly exact and a measure of art and experience is involved. Consequently the doubters have room to argue that the margin of uncertainty is unacceptable. These arguments are used to discourage doctors and their patients from evaluating the methods for themselves. Never-the-less several thousand UK patients who can afford to finance their own treatment are already benefiting from the findings of these pioneers. Unfortunately, apart from a couple of limited privately sponsored trials there is no official UK program to collect and analyse this valuable case data. To the extent that Ahlgrimm and Kells have made a contribution in this respect their book is doubly welcome even although it may not be the ultimate definitive treatise. There appears little doubt that enormous savings could be made in the lifetime costs of women's healthcare by extending the benefits the authors describe to all NHS patients. The 15 page list of references contained in the book should convince anyone that the authors have really done their homework!

Dale Alexander describes the work of Dr.A.C. Frazer in 1945 that proved how long-chain oil molecules such as Progesterone can be drawn primarily into the lymphatic system instead of being largely wasted travelling the portal route to the liver. They must first be hydrolyzed by emulsifying 1:2 in milk. This method satisfies the advice on page 80 of Marla Ahlgrimm's book regarding the advantage of taking hormones with food. It would appear that the Alexander and Frazer method of administration could overcome the fundamental objection of Dr. Lee, as expressed in his books, to taking hormones orally. It would be helpful if a clinical trial could be arranged, and monitored by the methods described in Marla Ahlgrimm's book.
The Only Book on HRT You'll Need.......2000-07-31
Accurately measuring hormones to determine the dosage that's just right for YOU and then monitoring your progress sounds like they gave this book the perfect title, because it IS the HRT solution. I've already made an appointment with my doctor for the book's recommended saliva hormone test and am looking forward to starting their "Restore" program. I've recommended this book to all my buddies at... and recommend it to everyone who needs hormone replacement therapy - ESPECIALLY for those of you whose current HRT regimen isn't giving you the results you're looking for. I hope someday this method of hormone testing and mangagement sweeps the nation."The HRT Solution" not only discusses a revolutionary approach to HRT, but also includes a thorough and precise description of hormones in general - how they work, why you need them, and what the alternatives are. In addition, the author gives advise on how to talk with your doctor about this method if he or she is not familiar with it. Like I said, this is the only book you'll need to read on Hormone Replacement Therapy!
I wish I had read this book first........1999-06-19
My friends and I all agree that reading this book at the beginning of our menopausal journey would have saved us a lot of time and money. It is quite simply the most "user-friendly" book on the subject that we have found. It makes a complex subject so much easier to understand an it gives us hope that this journey needn't be a nightmare.
If you're going to read any book about HRT, make it this one.......1999-06-11
I've read several books on HRT, but this is the ONLY one I've found that explains the whole picture clearly -- no lecturing, no heavy-handed intimidation tactics. All of us women have heard the platitude about HRT being a very personal decision, etc., blah blah, but until I read The HRT Solution, I never had enough unbiased information to make that choice. It was fascinating to learn that my hormonal profile is as unique as my DNA or my fingerprints, and that if I take hormones, I need to be sure that the type and dosage match what my body needs. I was also very intrigued by the idea that I can do a simple test at home to measure my hormones, and that if I do decide to take hormones, I can take a natural form that my body will tolerate. I have recommended this book to my mother, sister, and many, many friends -- it's very well written and incredibly informative.
The HRT Solution is superb!.......1999-06-07
This book should be the bible of hormone replacement for any woman who is on hormones or considering taking them. Any other approach just isn't good enough.

A remarkable Civil War story.......2001-12-19
"A Black Woman's Civil War Memoirs," by Susie King Taylor, was first published in 1902. A new edition, edited by Patricia Romero and featuring an introduction by Willie Lee Rose, appeared in 1988. In that new intro Rose declared, "There is nothing even vaguely resembling Susie King Taylor's small volume of random recollections in the entire literature of the Civil War, or in that of any other American conflict insofar as I am aware." Indeed, this book is a rare and valuable historical document.
Taylor was born a slave in 1848 on an island off the coast of Georgia. She gained her freedom and worked as a laundress for an African-American Union regiment during the war.
Taylor recalls how she learned to read and write and then herself became a teacher. She offers fascinating details about her life with the troops. She had many different duties beyond laundry service. I loved the episode where she recalls concocting "a very delicious custard" from turtle eggs and canned condensed milk, and serving it to the troops.
Taylor condemns the lack of appreciation shown for both black and white Civil War veterans. She also condemns early 20th century racism. Reading her book I was reminded of W.E.B. Du Bois' classic "The Souls of Black Folk," which was first published around the same time; I think the two books complement each other well.
Taylor ends on a note of hope and pride, noting "my people are striving" for better lives. This book is, in my opinion, an important milestone in African-American literature.
quiet but powerful.......2000-06-16
It's a short book (especially when you consider the added historical footnotes and pictures), but very valuable. It's so rare to hear the perspective of someone who was a slave, and who then lived free in the post-war period. Her heartfelt tales of the bigotry of the _post_-war period to me were even more memorable than her focus on the war itself.
Folksy & personable, with historical notes added for ref........1998-12-05
Amazon says this is out of print. NOT SO! It can be gotten thru the National Parks Service National Women's Museum in Seneca Falls, NY. The woman who wrote this lived an extraordinary life, as a slave child, and as a freed woman. Yet by many standards she is just an ordinary person living her life, doing what she CAN do. It's a nice read. She's not trying to be anybody's heroine, more simply I think she was writing to tell herself who she was, that she could survive, that she could be of service. Neither boring or exciting (so far), simply real.

Book Description
This second volume of persons named in English records between 1066 and 1166 follows on from its predecessor Domesday People: (Of) undoubted importance...in understanding the nature of Norman aristocratic society and the forces within it... a monumental effort. HISTORYDrawn from extensive and wide-ranging research in British and French archives, the 7500 entries in this volume provide the first authoritative prosopographical key to over 60,000 names found in English administrative documents such as the Pipe Rolls and the Cartae Baronum, as well as various Surveys and thousands of royal and private charters. Both volumes focus upon regional origin, family, and the descent of fees, and together they provide the most complete view to date of the people responsible for the conquest and colonization of England. Dr K.S.B. KEATS-ROHAN is Director of the Linacre Unit for Prosopographical Research and Fellow of the European Humanities Research Centre, University of Oxford.
