Book Description
The Builder's Greywater Guide (a supplement to Oasis's book Create an Oasis with Greywater) will help building professionals or homeowners work within or around building codes to successfully include greywater systems in new construction or remodeling, even if they have little prior greywater experience. It is also a great resource for regulators interested in improving regulatory oversight of greywater systems. Topics include: Special reasons for builders to install or not install a greywater system, flow chart for choosing a system, suggestions for dealing with inspectors, legal requirements checklist, detailed review of system options with respect to new laws, latest construction details and design tips, maintenance suggestions, equations for estimating irrigation demand, and the complete text of new US greywater law with English translation and suggested improvements. 46 pages, 9 figures, 8.5 x 11".
Note: The book Create an Oasis with Greywater is required in order to effectively use the "Builder's Greywater Guide".

This is a SUPPLEMENT ONLY.......2007-07-04
You must buy "Create an Oasis With Greywater" since this SUPPLEMENT refers to the book often!
Greywater Guide.......2006-11-10
Good general reference for planning a greywater system. Especially like the section on systems that don't work. Nice not to have to reinvent the wheel. Information in the book correlates well with my own experiences with greywater over the last 30 years in various parts of the world. A "must have" reference for anyone considering installing a greywater system.
Great Buy.......2006-03-15
I am not a builder but I am planning to build GREEN.I wanted to be as informed as possible, so I could research the building requirments, communicate as intelligently as possible, hire the right people, choose the right architect, etc. This book gave me 98% of all the info I needed on a graywater system, even though I'm building in Pennsylvania and author is a Californian. I have "Create an Oasis With Graywater" also. These books have made my life much simplier.
Another amazing book by Art Ludwig.......2002-12-03
I recommend that you get the 3 companion books on greywater treatment "Create an Oasis", "Branched Drain Greywater Systems" and "Builder's Greywater Guide". The information in these volumes will keep most of us far more informed than most of the regulators, the system builders, and the experts-in-theory. These volumes are real-world gems.
Art Ludwig has cut to the core of wastewater issues. He's obviously done all of his homework, mulled-over the variables, and come up with a common sense, economically reasonable, environmentally responsible approach to wastewater. I expect to save money that I would have spent on a post-septic tank, aerobic unit that would seemingly have been ecologically responsible; but because of the technological overkill, ultimately that system would have defeated my altruistic environmental concerns.
The sheer volume of information in each of his greywater books puts other sources to shame. Each volume is very well written, being clear, amusing, and concise. I can't imagine improving these books, other than keeping the information updated with future editions.
These books talk the talk and walk the walk better than anything else that I've seen. Buy a set for yourself, a set for your neighbors, and a set for the regulators.
For a Better Designed Dwelling.......2000-10-31
As with Art Ludwig's previous two books on the subject of greywater system designs, Create an Oasis with Greywater and Branched Drain Greywater Systems, Builder's Greywater Guide is an indispensable resource for anyone, regardless of budget or skill, who recognises the need to make better, more sustainable, and ecologically-sound dwellings, to design a greywater recycling system for domestic buildings that is perfectly suited to their needs. With brilliantly described, and illustrated, details and data on choosing a system, system options, estimating irrigation demand, as well as legal and health issues, Builder's Greywater Guide is not only a must for designers and builders of greywater systems but a perfect complement to the other two of Art Ludwig's books on the subject.

Customer Reviews:
Good information, but showing it's age.......2006-06-22
I regard myself as a reasonably knowlegable amateur - I know all about how exposure works, and I can use my flash bounced.
But I know pretty much nothing about studio lighting.
This book teaches, and teaches well, all about studio lighting, what equipment to buy and how to use it. The prose is clear, and the examples are more than up to the task of teaching the beginner. I learned alot from this book. I suspect that the people who found it inadequate simply knew more going in than I did. For a complete novice to studio lighting, I'd recommend this book without reservation.
But the book is seriously showing its age. There's far too much discussion of film and it's uses, and the lightmeters that it discusses aready look a little... old. Hence the four star rating. If you can find another book on amazon for the complete beginner that actually handles digital issues instead of film, then consider buying that instead. I didn't, and I'm happy with my purchase.
Pretty basic...pretty scanty.......2002-10-31
I'd give this 2 1/2 stars. It has a lot of very basic information in it, maybe what I'd call the FUNDAMENTALS of lighting which can be helpful. But it's pretty parsimonious in the information it provides. Since most buyers will probably be amateurs, I think the authors have short-changed the reader in areas like the meaning & effects of color temperatures or the various types of tungsten lighting & associated code keys. I don't think that's asking too much more for a book of this price (& title). The final impression I get from this book is that the authors are saving the good stuff for the next... book.
Fantastic book that covers EVERYTHING.......2002-10-14
this book has sections on everything you can imagine-- I won't get into them all here, but I will say it has an excellent, excelent first section on just equipment: what the different types of lights are, how they're used, sample photos that show the unique characteristics of that light, etc. it also goes into scrims, gobos, snoots, light meters, and allllll that other weird stuff you will need to know about as you get better at lightign. tons of sample photos make this a great reference AND learning guide.
Absolutely great for the advanced amateur.......2002-01-09
As an advanced amateur, I find this to be one of the very best books in my collection. It has given me clear answers to more questions that formally puzzled me, and introduced me to more new techniques, than any other book. I own several other standard books on lighting and feel strongly that this title is tops in the category, and can't resist alerting others to it.
The authors discuss all sorts of lighting equipment, but also cover light meters, back-drops, reflective surfaces, and household lighting sources such as desk lamps. A final section covers a wonderful variety of projects from low-key portraits to photographing windows.
The many photographs are perfectly chosen and are subordinated to illustrating the points discussed, rather than being just a show-case for fabulous pictures, as they are in the average photography book. A clear diagram accompanies the description of each lighting approach.
The one negative Amazon.com review mentions the problem of buying equipment "slowly"... as I develop a basic set of lighting equipment, slowly, I will be glad to have this resource to guide me.
Not the best in its class.......2000-04-07
I bought the book because I thought the "Easy and Affordable Techniques" would be clever and insightful, which they were not. The author's ultimate advice is to buy the standard lighting equipment, but slowly. While he does explain how/why the standard studio lighting equipment works, so does virtually every lighting book. I prefer the Pro Lighting Series for better photos, better diagrams, and better writing.
Book Description
It's hard to believe that Cathy has entertained us for a quarter-century. She's like a longtime friend who shares the same fears and frustrations as most women: the frightening sight of too-tight swimsuits in a dressing room mirror, the relentless call of the refrigerator, and men who are never quite right.In honor of Cathy's 25th anniversary, we present four gift books on Cathy's most popular subjects: Food, Love, Mom, and Work. This is a cartoon soul mate, who stresses over the four basic guilt groups-Cathy's seventy million readers of the nearly 1,500 newspapers in which she appears will find comfort, solace, and lots of laughs.
Customer Reviews:
Not always the funniest, but always the most insightful.......2005-10-06
I've been reading Cathy comics since I was a kid, only because it seemed to be the only "girl comic book character" who was not a superhero but a real person. As an adult, I see so much more into Cathy's evolution as our culture has evolved. And as work is a major fascet of life, it shows how the workplace has changed right along with the rest of us.
How ironic are the latent effects of social changes and how they relate to the office! Within 30 years it's been turned onto itself. Women were being told so long ago that they didn't have to stay home but to have jobs, careers, interests, etc. other than our families. We went into the workforce with abundance. Ask anyone in an office, and they will tell you times have changed. Now, women work to make ends meet. More than half of the women (whether they be married, single or divorced) in my office are the breadwinners in their households. Many are supporting deadbeat boyfriends or some other terrible domestic situation. People are coming to work not because they want to support their families or themselves, but because they want to get away from whatever's going on at home. As Cathy points out, that's why so many offices look like homes now days.
Throw in all those factors plus the topics du jour (ex. sexual harrassment) and you've got a disaster on your hands. Cathy, though not always the most hilariously funny, reads it just like a Woody Allen movie. Stumbling through life one foot at a time until you take a flying Dick Van Dyke leap into disaster after disaster, but pulling through.

The dignity of a teacher.......2001-06-23
I just devoured every delicious word of this book. Sarah Towles Reed was an amazing woman and this is an amazing book. Parr skillfully tells the story of Reed's life long work --45 years as a classroom teacher, almost 70 years as a local union activist and nearly 50 years lobbying the state legislature. The spirit and spunk of Reed jumps from the pages. This book is a must read for anyone interested in 20th century teachers, union activists, feminists or history in general. Thank you Leslie Parr for paying tribute to this fine woman with this page turning biography!
kind of boring.......1999-09-18
The woman this book centers around was probably a very interesting person, but the author just failed to capture her spirit and energy; it is loaded down with lengthy academic passages and enless scholarly rambling--this must have been Leslie Parr's PHd thesis before she turned it into a book. Boring and way too wordy.

Book Description
When it comes to passing the puck and reacting to hockey's fast pace, Paul Kariya has only one peer--Wayne Gretzky. And, wherever this Anaheim Mighty Ducks' left-winger plays, he astonishes competitors and teammates alike with his talent. Using dramatic color photography and an exciting text just right for 8 to 10 year olds, here is the fascinating story of Kariya's many successes. He was elected most valuable junior player in Canada; won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award as best player in US college hockey; helped power the Canadian team to a silver medal in the Olympics and a gold in the World Championships; and has twice topped 100 points in a season. A homage to a true ambassador of the game.

"wonderfully basic collage of Paul Kariya facts and photos".......1998-04-25
Expecting a large 8 by 10 inch book of over 100 pages of fantastic verbosity, I received a small, 60 page book with language suitable for a 6 year old. But I thought it was just great! Perfect for new Kariya fans and younger hockey fans. Not recommended for hard-core hockey fanatics, but a definite read for little hockey tykes.

Breathing Space: Living and Working at a Comfortable Pace in a Sped-Up Society
by Jeff Davidson
During the early nineties when I was embarking on my departure from the corporate world & entering the Corridor to pursue my entrepreneurial interests, one book caught my personal attention. At that time, I was told that "information doubled once every eighteen months". Alvin Toffler, John Naisbitt, & Richard Saul Wurman were already riding high on the information anxiety phenomenon, even though each of them has his own perspectives.
The book I am referring to is 'Breathing Space'. I am gratified to note that this book is still available. Although some stuff may be dated as it was written during the pre-internet era, a lot of the strategies & tools advocated by the author are still applicable in today's context.
First, the author defined 'breathing space' beautifully as: "You know it when you have it. It is the feeling of having time & space, of being in control, or content or relaxed. It is the room to be, to explore or to do nothing."
Let me outline here the major parts of his work:
1. The root causes of the pressure you feel;
2. Hand tools;
3. Power tools;
4. Cerebral tools;
5. Metaphysical tools;
Back in the early nineties, the book fueled me with a lot of valuable fresh insights, which empowered me to live & work at a comfortable relaxed pace in a 24-hour society:
- information only becomes knowledge when it's applied;
- choose to acquire knowledge that supports or interests you;
- about 80% of papers retained in office environments are never used;
- periodically, the sweetest choice is choosing from what you already have, choosing to actually have what you've already chosen;
- whenever you catch yourself making a low-level decision, consider: Does this really make a difference? Get in the habit of making only a few decisions a day - the ones that count;
- consider the value of any product, service or plan as two fold: (1) the intended benefit & (2) the ease with which you can understand, receive & enjoy those benefits. If it doesn't, don't buy it;
- Rules of Thumb: any item that saves you one hour per week for a minimum of one year & costs US$1,000 or less is an excellent buy; never mind if you purchased the latest or fastest model; there will always be later & faster models;
- any activity consuming 30 minutes of your day consumes two solid years of your life;
- to get to know someone better, ask him what his life priorities are;
- if you don't know what you have & you can't find it, it is of no use to you;
- just because it is interesting or expensive doesn't mean you have to keep it;
- being neat & being organised are not the same thing;
- a powerful way to gain breathing space, perpetually, is by seeking completions;
- preserve your weekends for recreational activites. You're worth it!;
- if you're serious about having more breathing space, give up fast food forever!
- you can increase the likelihood of experiencing time warp effect by removing yourself from the time measured environment - by hiding the clock;
- one hour of uncluttered thought can yield more benefits than days of common desk work;
- jump starting often enables you to capture your first & sometimes best thoughts;
- use the day units as a convenient measure for charting progress in pursuit of your goals;
- living in the moment does not mean living for the moment or living to get to the next moment. It means total, unconditional acknowledgement that what is now, is your life; that now is the only moment there is;
- the relentless quest to move on to what's next keeps you from fully enjoying what's here;
- longing more strongly for what you no longer have, rather than reveling in what you do have, is a guarantee that you will miss the present & all the magic it holds. Revel in what you have;
- how you elect to feel is always your choice. the act of choosing is a simple but powerful technique that will further aid you in attaining breathing space;
- when people make decisions based on instinct, they end up happier than those who make decisions based on careful analysis;
- choosing to feel at home frees you to experience the present moment, wit its surrrounding scenery, to the fullest;
- when you are off course, re-direct your energies. Ask: "What do I want right now?"
- go for a walk if you are stymied;
- most decisions you could make are of little consequence. Not choosing can be restful!
- some people remain poor is that they accommodate poverty...as difficult as it is for them to live in abject poverty, they are not willing to accept the difficulty of making a better life for themselves (according to Prof Kenneth Galbraith);
- get ruthless, drop what doesn't support you;
- constantly read your priorities & goals list;
- clear all your files of deadwood;
- count twice; look for all the ways to re-apply the work you have already done;
Even up to today, the insights from the book still work for me! Many thanks, Jeff, for a wonderful exposition!
To conclude my review, let me say this: Read this book & see how much more you can accomplish in a day & how much more you can enjoy it!
Great book!.......2006-06-07
This is a very insightful book and one that is unlike most others that I've encountered. The author maintains that the typical person in our society today is in a super-rush because of forces that uniformly impact us all. He then proceeds to lay out in a very logical fashion how to counter-act these forces and take control of your day as well as the spaces in your life, like your desk, your car, your closets, and so on, so that you're in control more of the time. I particularly like the sections called "Fresh Air" which are bulleted points offering innovative ideas for getting back in charge of your life.
Overcome stress.......2005-05-05
This book is nothing short of a sensational. It is one of the most forward-thinking texts I've encountered in quite a while. Starting with the premise that an over-populated world creates more information and communication than the typical person can keep up with---more media, more paper, and more choices---you begin to gain a sense of why each day feels as if there's too much to do, too much to know, too much to keep on top of. With this book, you gain a perspective that enables you to approach your day, your week, your month and so on in a more common and reasoned fashion. Some of the tips in the middle and latter chapters I have seen in otherbooks, but in this context they seem to work particularly well. I like theauthor's approach in giving out the tips based on hand tools, power tools,and cerebral tools. If you are experiencing increasing time pressure or stress, this is the book for you.
Easy read, VERY helpful!.......2005-02-01
"Breathing Space" is a wonderful concept and is laid out nicely by the author in this easy-to-read book. It's only about 210 pages but mercifully, most pages don't contain a lot of text. So it's easy on the eyes, and easy on the mind. I agree whole-heartedly with the author's premise that the pace of life has sped up because of what he calls "macro-realities," a sort of mega-trends that are here now and continue to impact every element of our lives. Buy this book for yourself and for people you care about. It'll give you insights and perspectives that are unique and vital. More important, you'll have a broad-base understanding as to why we all seem to be in such a hurry all the time, and have a real good chance of getting past this trap.
Breathing Space.......2003-04-03
This is a very good book on a topic that a lot of people will start to be aware of. I mean, gosh, can we all just keep rushing around, working like dogs, and not taking any time off for personal growth? It focuses on things how all got into this culteral rat race, the imprtance of balance, rediscovering aspects of yourself, cultivating new interests and new hobbies and taking appropriate personal risks that you weren't up to taking before reading it.
Book Description
They were warriors, trained to fight,
dedicated to their country,
and determined to win.
At Guadalcanal, the Marine Corps’ machine gunners took everything the Japanese could throw at them in one of the bloodiest battles of World War II; their position was so hopeless that at one point they were given the go-ahead to surrender. Near the Chosin Reservoir in Korea, as the mercury dropped to twenty below, the 1st Marine Division found itself surrounded and cut off by the enemy. The outlook seemed so bleak that many in Washington had privately written off the men.
But surrender is not part of a Marine’s vocabulary. Gunner’s Glory contains true stories of these and other tough battles in the Pacific, in Korea, and in Vietnam, recounted by the machine gunners who fought them. Bloody, wounded, sometimes barely alive, they stayed with their guns, delivering a stream of firepower that often turned defeat into victory–and always made them the enemy’s first target.

Johnnie Clark does it again!.......2007-04-05
Gunner's Glory makes you want to hear every Vet's story, because you know that for every one you hear there has to be hundreds more just as amazing. These first hand accounts are a fascinating testimony to the courage of our fighting men and to the faithful God that sustains them.
I particularly appreciate Johnnie's writing style. He keeps the book as clean as possible without whitewashing the harsh realities of war.
If you haven't read Guns Up! I'd highly recommend it as well.
a meager tribute to brave men.......2005-10-05
No one can deny the bravery and courage of the marines who tell their stories in this book, but it fails because of a lack of editing and context on the part of the author. Individual stories are presented, but unless you have an in depth knowledge of the battle [and I've read dozens of books on these wars], it's difficult to place it in perspective, and impossible to relate to the overall battle or war. In addition, most chapters start in the middle of a battle, then jump back to the gunner's childhood and training before returning to the opening scene. This is often used in novels and movies, but here it's distracting and confusing. [A minor annoyance is the repeated evangelical proclamations from the participants - was this a requirement for being included in the book?] Rather than spending time with this book, I'd suggest looking at some of the fantastic books that are out there - John Ellis' The Sharp End; Company Commander; Away All Boats; Keegan's Face of Battle, The Bloody Crucible of Courage: Fighting Methods and Combat Experience of the Civil War; Jarhead by Anthony Swofford [1st Gulf War]; Band of Brothers Stephen E. Ambrose ; Homage to Catalonia - George Orwell [Spanish Civil War]
