Customer Reviews:
Priority for the Poor.......2007-07-21
Being on the extremely limited budget, the idea of restoring our 1923 craftsman kitchen to the obsessive original is not even an option. This fabulous book gives you numerous ideas/ paths as to what a $100,000 restoration would encompass, and then provides compromises that the 'normal' home owner can accomplish with great results. It definitely made me re-contemplate several ideas that we had already set in stone, and I think ultimately will save us investment money. My favorite aspect of this book? Unlike several bungalow magazines (which will go unnamed) that feel the need to pretentiously describe the 'color of fumed oak' and ten million other things that the average home owner will never afford or see, Jane Powell is down to earth and able to 'talk' to you like your neighbor next door.
Not useful for building my new bungalow home.......2007-03-10
If I were restoring an old bungalow kitchen, this book might have been more useful. But I am just trying to bring some period touches to the new Craftsman bungalow that I'm building. The author gives examples of "Obsessive Restoration" and a "Compromise Solution" for each element of restoring a bungalow kitchen. I found a few things useful, such as what countertops were found in a period bungalow, but I could have found that elsewhere on the internet. In addition, the author wasted way too many pages discussing the history of kitchens, which is irrelevant to me. Her companion book, "Bungalow Bathrooms" is much of the same.
What a great resource!.......2007-02-22
I've been toying for years with plans to fix up the kitchen in our 1923 American Foursquare house, but last year when both my nonagenarian grandmothers moved into Assisted Living Facilities, I found myself clearing out their kitchens. When I brought some of their vintage kitchen equipment into my own kitchen, it suddenly came clear that my own kitchen re-do simply had to honor the history of my house and more importantly, the histories of my grandmothers' kitchens.
I am in no way interested in obsessive restoration, but I really needed to see what kitchens of my grandmothers' childhoods and young married lives would look like. What might my own kitchen have looked like when it was first built? There are charming Craftsman details elsewhere in my home... under the barn-red paint and 1970's "country primitive" wallpaper, what was the feel of this room?
This book is like a stroll through a neighborhood-full of kitchens from this era, wonderfully photographed and clearly explained. While my kitchen renovation will be a relatively simple project, I am thrilled to have such a lovely resource on which to base my search for the kitchen that lies beneath all that paint!
My favorite home decorating book bar none.......2006-12-27
I can't even count the number of times I've reread this book or just leafed through and admired the fabulous pictures. As the owner of a 1920 foursquare, nothing makes me sadder than to see an old house that's been "improved" by someone with no sense of history or vintage style. This book celebrates vintage kitchens in painstaking detail, describing the form and function of every single surface, nook and cranny. If you're using this book as a "how to" guide, the authors are realistic enough to give you several levels of authenticity from which to choose -- for instance, are you going to go all the way and have a vintage icebox? Can you not live without a microwave and dishwasher? What kind of screws should you use on your cabinet hinges if you want to be "period authentic?" The companion bathroom book is great, too, but this book is my very favorite and inspired me to replace my brand new (but characterless) gas stove with a yellow and green 1920's model with shapely long legs!
Best Bungalow Book.......2006-03-24
Together writer Jane Powell and photographer Linda Svendsen create the best bungalow books on the market. Whether you are thinking of remodelling your kitchen, changing a few details, or just want to understand the history of your kitchen, this is the book to buy.

Book Description
The American love affair with the Bungalow continues. And in this most adored housing style, it is the kitchen that homeowners must most often restore, renovate, or remodel. But no one wants an authentic Bungalow kitchen, which was a rustic space that usually featured just a stove, a hoosier, and a sink.
While there are books that describe the authentic Bungalow kitchen, there are few that show readers how to update a Bungalow to handle today's lifestyle needs and personal preferences. Happily, manufacturers today understand the demand, and there are many material and appliance options for homeowners--and the designers they hire--to bring contemporary convenience and beauty to an updated or new Bungalow kitchen. The New Bungalow Kitchen not only provides wonderful historical nuggets about Bungalow kitchens, it offers a plethora of ideas about how to create a tastefully restored or remodeled kitchen, or build new within the style.

As always Amazon had what I wanted. I love the book!!!Just what we were looking for. Your website is easy to use4 and navigate, you even linked me to the marketplace for further titles and books at half the cost of new. I did not know that marketplace existed, so I learned something new. Thank you for another great visit to Amazon.com
New Bungalow Kitchen Review.......2007-07-06
The book gave us a lot of good ideas. We just bought a Bungalow built in 1941 and we are looking to overhaul the kitchen without disturbing the character and charm of the home. This book will help us do that. I was a little dissapointed that the book did not give more specific reccomendations i.e style of cabinets, materials used, finishes etc. They had some pictures, but alot of the details are not literally described . Still a great book.
Beautiful book with the best, experienced advice to homeowners considering renovating their kitchens, no matter what style home .......2007-07-04
I relied on this very well-written, beautifully photographed book while renovating my 1900 colonial revival house. Mr. Labau's eye, obviously honed by long experience, is pretty amazing when it comes to combining the class of the old with the functional needs of the new.
The best thing about this book is that you don't put it away on a shelf. It is an art book, too!

Bungalow Basics: Porches (Pomegranate Catalog, No. A720)
ASIN: 0764927760 |
Book Description
Bungalows of the early twentieth century were pleasantly small, well designed, and affordable. The same can be said of Pomegranate's Bungalow Basics books. Each book in the series spotlights a different aspect of bungalows, those charming and efficient homes that came to epitomize the Arts and Crafts style in American residences. Douglas Keister's photographs capture the results of meticulous restorations, while Paul Duchscherer's text provides concise information about bungalow design and history.
Titles in the series: Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Dining Rooms, Doors, Fireplaces, Kitchens, Living Rooms, and Porches.
Customer Reviews:
Nice, but 6" x 6" size is problem.......2004-08-08
A nice book with examples of bungalow kitchens new and old, but some of the images are too small due to the tiny size of the book, about 6" x 6". Some of these images have been used before in an earlier bungalow CD. Book offers little more than pretty pictures; a minimal list of suppliers, no details, no how-to's. If you have technical questions, such as how to integrate a 1915 cast iron kitchen sink into a new counter top, you won't find the answers here.

Product Description
As a country, America has never been a slouch at producing "originals," a term applied loosely and glibly to everyone from rock stars to CEOs. But if any place of the past century really did spawn originals like a breeding box, it was Black Mountain College, and among its many illustrious graduates is Jonathan Williams: poet, publisher, raconteur, and eclectic collector of like spirits. In this wonderfully quirky book, Williams has made the rounds and produced his inventory of poets, painters, writers, and artists whose only commonality is their unequivocal distinction. And what a world it is, populated by his friends, some alive and some quite dead, people he knew, and people he wished he had known; famous people (Ezra Pound, Henry Miller, Paul Strand, Buckminster Fuller, William Carlos Williams), people who should be famous but aren't (Basil Bunting, Frederick Sommer, Aaron Siskind, Wendell Berry, Charles Olson, James Laughlin), and the gravestones of some who were once famous, are now interred, and whose memories he'd have us honor (H.P. Lovecraft, Wallace Stevens, Erik Satie, James Thurber). Musicians, writers, composers, and especially the white and black geniuses of Outsider Art (Howard Finster, Elijah Pierce, Keith Smith) are all here, alive and kicking, in Williams's heaven of honorary prodigies.
This self-contained galaxy, this "home-made world" of extraordinary personalities captured on film and then decoded in extended captions, presents people of genuine accomplishment who are never going to be feted in the pages of People or interviewed on Oprah. As Davenport writes, "He is not a journalist looking for feature stories, nor a critic with an agenda, nor a lion hunter collecting names to drop. A cultural anthropologist? I see parallels with Ruskin finding forgotten painters of the Trecento." Here is the flip side of America, where fame seldom intersects or coexists with true talent, and where the truly gifted often inhabit their own domains, hermetic, unseen, unheralded, but always present in the creative flux of our cultural landscape.

No one walks away from a Close to Home cartoon unscathed. John McPherson's lumpy characters and bizarre situations are tailor-made for gut-splitting laughs. And then there are the cartoons that leave readers shaking their heads, sputtering, "Oh my gosh" as a guilty smile passes across their faces. The Scourge of Vinyl Car Seats delivers what fans from nearly 600 daily and Sunday newspapers expect from McPherson: jokes about everything from parenting to dating to car repairs. McPherson takes his readers on a journey that's very Close to Home.

Much needed for every family library!.......2004-01-14
My mother wrote this book when she was looking for things to help her cope with the death of her husband and teach her children about grief and death. There was and is surprisingly little available. She is raw and vulnerable while being informative about the stages of grief and the reality of the process. She includes stories which make it real and help us to know that we are not alone in our pain. This is a valuable source for anyone who has had a death in their family.

Book Description
You're in charge of the battle outcome as an M1 Abrams tank platoon leader in this exciting, interactive work.
Customer Reviews:
Luck more than skill counts.......2006-03-05
Armor Attacks is an attempt to help people who are not in the military understand some of what a tank commander faces in the modern battlefield. the author took on this mission and decided to convey it via a semi-interactive set of exercises. This book is divided into 88 short chapters. At the end of each chapter, you are directed to go to another chapter, or asked to make a choice which sends you to different chapter, or asked to throw some dice and go to a new chapter based on the dice throw. In other words, this takes the format of those old "make your own adventure" books.
While going through the scenarios, you are supposedly learning more about the craft of a tank platoon commander. At the conclusion of each scenario, there are some guidelines for you to consider - especially when you blow it and end up dead!
While entertaining and somewhat innovative, the book itself left me feeling a bit flat. There are really only two scenarios played out. In the first one, your platoon is performing a flank attack on an enemy formation; in the other, you are given a counter-reconnaisance mission to help forestall an enemy attack. If you glide through the two scenarios successfully, you are promoted to Captain, and given command of a tank company. If you do not succeed, you most likely die.
Given those outcomes, I would have wanted to have some good guidelines on how I should react and act presented as material that I can read before being asked to make life and death decisions. Unfortunately, that's not the way the book is set up. Any feedback on what you should have done comes after the denounement; i.e. after you're dead! So, it's not very helpful.
The other negative comment is that I eventually found the correct path to succeed and get promoted, and then realized that the most critical decision point was not of my own making! It was a dice roll! That explained my frustration as I made the right choices time and time again and ended up being defeated by the luck of the draw. I suppose the author's idea was to show how much of war is decided by pure dumb luck, but in a training manual, it seemed to play too big of a role.
In addition to the main thrust of the book, there are several appendices full of anciallry information like organization charts, data on the composition of the tanks discussed and their main systems, and various other additional data that is probably meant to fill in gaps in knowledge to those who seek it.
My overall assessment is that this is not a good way to teach someone how a tank commander should act nor does it offer a good story of tank tactics; instead it is a terribly tortured set of two scenarios whose successful outcome is completely unbelievable. (the protagonist is promoted to Captain after two successful scenarios whose total elapsed time is three days!!)
The good things about this book that elevated its rating is that the writing style is crisp and believable and that the scenarios themselves are rather engaging. This armchair "quarterback" - so to speak - was very amused and engaged by the tank tactics that were described.
Engaging and Entertaining...but a bit short!.......2002-07-05
This is the third Antal book I've enjoyed, after reading (or rather, interacting with) Infantry Combat and reading "Proud Legions."
This book was written just before the Gulf War, so I found it interesting that Antal picked the Middle East as the theater of war for a fictional future conflict with an unidentified enemy.
The book plays out much like the old "Choose Your Own Adventure" series that I enjoyed as a grade-schooler, where you have to make choices that lead to branching stories.
In this particular adventure, you are 2LT Jaeger, a young tank platoon commander in charge of 4 M1 Abrams tanks. You are the junior platoon leader in the company, and are initially assigned a reserve role in your first mission.
As the other elements of your company come under fire, you are asked to make decisions which can either save the day or kill you and all under your command. Certainly I enjoy this more from the comfort of my living room reading chair, rather than the turret of a tank in combat! If, however, you do end up making a fatal mistake, Antal writes in some helpful advice on what you did wrong, and invites you to try again.
Having already familiarized myself with Antal's work when reading "Infantry Combat", I passed through the book fairly easily, and was somewhat disappointed at its brevity. There were only two basic missions, unlike "Infantry Combat," which was a little more involved and took you through an entire campaign consisting of several branching possibilities that still led to victory.
All in all, though, it was a fun read, and I recommend it to those who enjoy being armchair generals, like me.
Superb War Game Book!.......2000-12-07
John F. Antal's clean prose has a psychological edge to it that proves that the lack of narrative action in other wargames neglects a very important dimension in tactical decisionmaking. Case in point: your lookout frantically radios back to you for permission to withdraw, because he believes he will die if he stays at his current position. If you grant him permission, you will lose sight of your attackers, but if you order him to stay put, his death could undermine your troops's trust in your judgement-which could lead to fatal delays in their execution of your future orders. Although many of the text entries are long, Antal's efficient, yet effective, battle descriptions are dangerously immersive. Consequently, the decision points are surprising, because they seem to appear suddenly like a hand grenade bouncing unexploded at your feet. Indeed, skilled, immediate, on-the-spot judgement calls are crucial to staying alive and might leave you gasping for those peaceful t-junctions to ponder over in other gamebooks.
Superb book on modern tank combat!.......1999-07-14
Armor Attacks is an excellent book. This book entertains as well as teaches. In this book the reader determines the ending by his or her decisions. Every junior officer in the Army and Marine Corps should read this book. Civialians will enjoy it too, and get a glimpse of what it is like to be a tank platoon leader. Very well done!
A must read for any junior officer.......1999-01-08
John Antal's book takes the reader into a fictional world of modern mechanized warfare, that is based on real life lessons learned at the U.S.Army's National training Center. In his fictional portrail of armor warfare, Antal presents the reader with a litany of problems and solutions that many a field commander has actually seen in fighting the great game at NTC. As the reader is lead through the narrative of the story ,he is asked to make key judgments based on the 'guidlines' of modern military strategy as presented by operations manual FM-100-5. Each of the problems were problems that commanders in the field faced at NTC, and the 'correct' solutions that the he tries to lead you to make, are those that actually worked in the field. Antal does not try to impart any new knowledge, however, he does present lessons learned in a new and exciting manner. He draws the reader into the novel, and allows them to discover the correct answers for themselves. This is a remarkably effective method of teaching lifes lessons. I for one read this book over two years ago and its lesson stand out as well as any I have learned in my 9 year career in the Army.

Book Description
In this small work Professor Horace Campbell the veteran Pan-Africanist scholar and Rodney Worrell a young organic intellectual address some of the burning issues of Pan-Africanism. The publication is a hard hitting, provocative and enlightening discourse on Pan-Africanism. It is also a road map for the way forward. Join Campbell on this journey as he engages the attention of the reader on a number of important issues : Africa and International Partnerships, defining the task of the 21st century, retreating from the mechanical concepts of humans, leaderism and the lessons of Pan-African struggles in the last century, retreating from wars and violence, African women and liberation, re-conceptualizing Pan-Africanism, Walter Rodney 1974, Pan-African renewal in the 21st century, USA and their concept of partnering with Africa, reparations and peace in Africa, what kind of Pan-African partnership is possible, can the Pan-African movement learn from the lessons of biological warfare, African youths liberation and peace and information revolution and peace. Then travel with Worrell as he highlights the social and political thought of Leroy Harewood one of the unsung heroes of the Caribbean. Unfortunately many working class West Indians have made sterling contributions in the quest for social justice but their contributions have never been recognize. However, Rodney Worrell seeks to address this deficiency by bringing to the attention of readers Harewood's views on several issues that are still relevant including: who are Africans, hunger and underdevelopment, Pan-African solidarity, failure of Barbadian political leaders, shortcomings of the black middle class, Clement Payne/NDP alliance, smashing the neo-colonial state, weaknesses of the liberal democratic model, Caribbean unification, re-colonization and the revolutionary potential of Barbadians.

An intimate look at a South African radical.......1998-10-10
In 1965 Robert Sobukwe was a prominent black prisoner on South Africa's Robben Island--the famous prison known for holding Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid leaders. A journalist went to interview Sobukwe. Of the encounter she wrote: "As you enter, as you talk to him, you gain much the same impression of power, of leadership, as you do when with South Africa's Prime Minister [Hendrik Verwoerd]. Sobukwe has much the same quiet courtesy, much the same innate charm--and certainly much the same clear, incisive, trained mind. You are left with the overwhelming impression that, if this man is one day released, he will, for good or ill, leave his mark on South African history."
What is remarkable about the description is that it came from a pro-government journalist, explains Benjamin Pogrund in his book, Sobukwe and Apartheid. In fact, the journalist had been allowed to interview Sobukwe in order to produce a positive spin on prison life in South Africa. The government's aim was to counter adverse publicity over deplorable jail conditions, for black and white prisoners, at another prison. A series of shocking articles by Pogrund in the Rand Daily Mail, where he was a reporter, caused a furor in and out of the country. There were angry calls for a judicial inquiry; damage control became necessary.
That a journalist sympathetic to the government was forced to concede that Sobukwe possessed endearing qualities, comes as no surprise after reading Pogrund's fascinating and highly informative account. Men as different Andrew Young, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations--who brought some of Sobukwe's children to America to study and live with him--and Anthony Lewis, op-ed columnist for The New York Times, were strongly impressed after meeting him.
Pogrund writes about a personal friend. Sobukwe was the first leader of the Pan Africanist Congress, an organization staunchly committed to ending white dominance in South Africa. Though the two men first met in 1957, their unique friendship began in earnest the following year when the author, a white South African, joined the Rand Daily Mail. Pogrund was a rookie reporter eager to cover black politics. Fortunately for him, he joined the English-language newspaper in the same year it acquired a new editor who was not afraid to report on black issues and to attack apartheid through sharp political analysis.
Having been a distinguished student and graduate of the country's then leading institution for blacks--the South African Native College at Fort Hare--Sobukwe was one of the very few blacks who served as "language assistants" on the faculty of the well-known University of the Witwatersrand. As he got pulled deeper into politics, a process that really began during his student days, Pogrund noticed that "he was scholarly as always, but there was now also a fluency and passing which put it among the finest oratory I had heard."
Pogrund's book is also, in part, a touching chronicle of his correspondence with an imprisoned man who was one of the founders of black resistance to apartheid. Sobukwe was arrested and jailed after the PAC organized the Sharpeville demonstration in 1960 against pass laws, a seminal event in modern South African history in which police fired and killed 68 people. He was jailed until 1969 when he was released for health reasons but remained a banned person in an isolated small city until he died of cancer in 1978.
While Sobukwe was locked up, Pogrund managed, through the help of sympathetic friends, to have him steadily supplied with newspapers, books, clothes, food and other necessities. The letters that Sobukwe sent out to the author depict a man with a healthy intellectual appetite and who was surprisingly upbeat despite the grim sobriety caused by apartheid.
The book is also an informal history of early anti-apartheid resistance. The PAC and the African National Congress were both banned in 1960, forcing them to go underground and soon into exile. The Communist Party was banned in 1950. (All three organizations would remain illegal until 1990 when they and others were unbanned by President F.W. de Klerk.)
One learns how the PAC, less prominent than Mandela's ANC, emerged as a breakaway faction of "Africanists" who felt that the ANC was not dedicated enough to its stated goal of ending white domination. It also perceived the ANC as working too closely with non-blacks and thought that communist influence was so strong that the organization had substituted class struggle for the all-important aim of achieving African Nationalism. The irony of all this, Pogrund points out, was that white newspapers (and no doubt the authorities) saw the Africanists as "extremist rebels" of the ANC which was itself also viewed as "extremist."
One weakness of the book is that it does not adequately confront a key and potentially illuminating trouble area for Sobukwe. The author gives passing treatment to the issue of membership within the PAC. The organization decided that it was to be comprised of blacks and "colored" or mixed race people. This fitted with Sobukwe's claim that "Africans are the only people who, because of their material position, can be interested in the complete overhaul of the present structure of [South African] society." Was this really true? Did it turn out to be a tactical mistake when contrasted with the more inclusive policy of the ANC?
Pogrund estimates that in 1960 the PAC had slightly more than 20,000 signed members while the ANC had between 27,000 to 28,000. But, he claims, actual support for both groups was greater than the numbers indicated since party organization was hampered by police harassment.
In sum, Pogrund's book is an eloquent testimony of how an inter-racial friendship survived despite apartheid's seemingly all-powerful, divisive power.

Book Description
Maida Springer was an active participant in shaping a history that involved powerful movements for social, political and economic equality and justice for workers women, and African Americans. Maida Springer is the first full-length biography to document and analyze the central role played by Springer in international affairs, particularly in the formation of AFL-CIO’s African policy during the Cold War and African independence movements.
Richards explores the ways in which pan-Africanism, racism, sexism and anti-Communism affected Springer’s political development, her labor activism, and her relationship with labor leaders in the AFL-CIO, the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), and in African unions. Springer’s life experiences and work reveal the complex nature of black struggles for equality and justice. A strong supporter of both the AFL-CIO and the ICFTU, Springer nonetheless recognized that both organizations were fraught with racism, sexism, and ethnocentrism. She also understood that charges of Communism were often used as a way to thwart African American demands for social justice. As an African-American, she found herself in the unenviable position of promoting to Africans the ideals of American democracy from which she was excluded from fully enjoying.
Richards’s biography of Maida Springer uniquely connects pan-Africanism, national and international labor relations, the Cold War, and African American, labor, women’s, and civil rights histories. In addition to documenting Springer’s role in international labor relations, the biography provides a larger view of a whole range of political leaders and social movements. Maida Springer is a stirring biography that spans the fields of women studies, African American studies, and labor history.
