Book Description
Taunton's new series, Updating Classic America, provides a unique combination of design inspiration and proven ideas for renovating, remodeling and building classic American homes. The first book in the series, Bungalows, provides a history and overview, along with proven, tasteful design solutions for a variety of bungalow-style remodels, additions, renovations, and new construction. Respected architects and bungalow owners Louis Wasserman and Caren Connolly inspire bungalow enthusiasts and homeowners to "put down the coffee table books," and "get to work on their own houses." Bungalows contains a wealth of successful design ideas for updating vintage homes and creating well crafted contemporary bungalows. More than 20 bungalows from around the country are highlighted with before-and-after floor plans, as well as options for a wide variety of budgets, styles and sizes of homes. 211 color photos and 56 drawings are included.
Customer Reviews:
inspirational, if not particularly informative.......2007-06-04
This book is richly illustrated with plenty of photographs of updated bungalows from several styles ranging from the simple Midwestern houses made to be affordable in their day, to modern, contemporary West Coast bungalows.
Where I found the book somewhat lacking was in the area of detailing before and after transformations of existing bungalows. Given the title, I would've expected more information about specific remodeling and renovation projects, with plenty of photos detailing "before", "during" and "after" the remodeling phases. There's very, very little of that in this book. The majority of the photos and scant floorplans dwell primarily with the finished project, though there are a very few that indicate what the owner started with. If you're looking for project specific guidance for rennovating or building your bungalow, this may not be the best choice. Still, the finished photos and supplemental text are inspiring. I would recommend this book with caution, based on the idea that it should likely be only one of many books in a modest library on period architecture upfitting.
Call it four and a half stars.......2006-05-31
The authors of this book do a very good job of highlighting the bungalow's unique traits and then showing inspirational bungalow renovations. Early pages give the requisite definitions of what makes a bungalow, but I was most impressed by the middle three chapters: "Remodeling Inside the Walls"; "Beyond the Walls"; and "Brand New Bungalows". It is here that the authors challenge you to update your bungalow without losing any of the home's original character (or build anew with the same overall goal of classic home character).
As any bungalow fan knows, there are three definite "branches" to the bungalow tree: in the Eastern U.S. craftsman bungalows rule, in the Midwest you find prairie styles and simple Chicago bunghalows, and in the west you find mission styles and the Greene and Greene influenced California bungalows. Being from the Midwest, I found this book especially compelling because so many of the example houses illustrated in the book are from my part of the country. Thus if you are from the Midwest I recommend this book with 5 stars, otherwise I give it a 4.5.
Updating Classic American Bungalows is a must read for anyone who owns, lives in, or loves the bungalow style of architecture.
Highly recommended!
More good ideas for bungalites.......2006-05-30
The authors confess early on in this beautifully illustrated book that they are themselves bungalow-owners and -dwellers, which makes them automatically sympathetic to the situation of the novice who finds himself with a fixer-upper or a house that needs a new kitchen, more storage, or just more space. And they tell, in a very practical way, how to go about creating what you need. Quite apart from the many beautiful full-color photos, they offer plenty of really vital information. "With the right architect, a radical overhaul can be sensitively done...[integrating] many of the interior details that people love about their bungalows," they say. "A potential side benefit of [renovating one's attic] is that [its slanted knee walls] may mean [it] isn't legally a room at all and therefore not taxed as a bedroom. Check to see if your local ordinance states that if more than a certain percentage of a room's walls are sloping, it is exempt from full taxation." (This is something that would never have occurred to me!) "As real estate values escalate, you may find that the lot is more valuable than the house itself. That, in turn, can make it difficult to get a mortgage on a 900-sq.-ft. house. But if you apply for a loan with a proposal to add on, you may have a better chance of getting financing...Look at the local ordinances covering setback and height requirements and limits on the percentage of the site that can be built on...You also have a chance to address any shortcomings your lot [yard] may have..." Team this volume with Treena Crochet's Bungalow Style: Creating Classic Interiors in Your Arts and Crafts Homeand Diane Maddex's Bungalow Nation (see my reviews) and you'll have a core shelf that will help you understand, appreciate, and sensitively update your bungalow.
The Title Says it All..........2006-01-25
This book is called UPDATING Bungalows! Amazon is a wonderful resource because you can browse pages before you buy. This book should not be a disappointment for those who are paying attention.
I am now the proud owner of a 1922 California Bungalow. I have no illusions that this was the tract home of its day (I have found 4 others exactly like it in my neighborhood). This book embraces the ideals of the bungalow and the intent of the lifestyle completely. Not all of us can live in rarified homes in Pasadena or Chicago, and a strict period restoration with Stickley furnishings may not be practical for our lives in the 21st century. This book is about UPDATING what you have to balance the traditional Craftsman aesthetic with modern sensibilities.
For those who are hard core Craftsman enthusiasts bent on a period correct restoration, this is not the book for you. If you live in the modern world but respect the ideals of the era, check this out. There are plenty of good ideas, and a few photos of loving restorations too.
MANY UNSYMPATHETIC RENOVATIONS.......2005-12-07
I appreciated the photos of the exteriors but was disappointed to see how many of the interiors were gutted to beyond recognition of the bungalow style. I bought the book to see bungalow style, not poorly interpreted modern cutups.

Book Description
Paul Robert Hanna had an immense, lasting impact on education in both the United States and abroad. Over a career of more than fifty years, his diverse contributions included a curriculum design that became the standard for elementary school social studies instruction, new formulations of the community school concept for international development education, the production of dozens of textbooks, and the creation of an important resource for research in the instrumental uses of education. Yet, despite his long career and major contributions to education, there has been no comprehensive biography of Hanna availableuntil now. At last analyzing and placing in context Hanna's vast contributions, Paul Robert Hanna: A Life of Expanding Communities illuminates the life of a man who played a major role in the history of education in the twentieth century. From the beginnings of his career in the rural Midwest to its peak as a leading figure in education, these chapters reveal the personal "expanding communities" of influence Hanna achieved throughout his life, including his work at Teacher's College of Columbia and Stanford University, his establishment of the Stanford International Development Education Center, the development of the analysis of the relationship between schools and modern social, political, and economic institutions, his role in founding and leading professional organizations for educators, his consulting work in East Asia, Africa, Europe, and Central and South America, and much more.

Content Rich but Style Poor.......2005-02-05
I am a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and stumbled upon Paul Robert Hanna when reading his Clients' Report about his Wright-designed Hanna House. Wanting to know more about Hanna, I discovered Jared Stallones book on amazon. Being a teacher, I was particularly interested to read about Hanna's life and works. To that end I was not disappointed; Stallones supplies much information and detail. However, reading his book felt like reading a thesis or dissertation. Stallones writing style is dry; he does not paint pictures or tell compelling stories. The book would have been improved with some photographs of Hanna and Jean, his wife. I rate this book a 5 for information about Hanna and a 3 for the writing style.
Stallones' latest is great.......2003-05-02
Stallones, as always, produced a winner. Great stuff.

Inside hockey.......2007-02-02
Inside Hockey by Gary Miles is 155 pages long and was published by Metro Books in 1998. This a non-fiction book about the history of the game of hockey. Inside Hockey tells about the game, its players, rules, and coaches.
It tells great Stanley Cup stories such as the Penguins back to back wins in 91' and 92' and the great players that have played the game. Guys like Wayne Gretzky, Jarri Kurri, Sergei Federov, Terry Sawchuk, and Eric Lindros re just a few that talked about they're playing careers. Many other unheard stories re told by players and coaches.
The nice thing about this book is it is very easy two read and very informative. If you have a strong passion for hockey you wont be able to put this book down for a second. Inside Hockey was a great book by Gary Miles. I haven't read a better book about hockey facts in my life and if you want to learn more about hockey and its history you should check out this book.
Inside Hockey: Players, Pucks, and Penalty Boxes by Gary Mi.......2005-03-22
I am a huge and avid fan of this sport and received from my sister in law and my brother christmas 2004. Even though it is quite old and most players play for other teams now, the book is filled with cool anectdotes, tidbits and such. The photos are top of the line sports photography and stories. I love it and so will all hockey fans....
An excellent book for avid hockey fans.......1999-02-07
An excellent overview of the history and rules of the game of hockey. This walks through the creation of the game as well as biographies of the greatest players of all time. Even though the target of this book may be for the true fan, those who are merely interested in the game will find enjoyment as well.

An Affordable Alternative to its Big Brother "Collecting and Classifying Coloured Diamonds".......2006-08-05
This book is affectively an extract from Collecting and Classifying Coloured Diamonds by the same author, concentrating just on the collection itself, and as such is an affordable alternative. We bought both!
Uninspired photos of colored diamonds.......2003-06-10
This is a rather thin, over-sized, hardcover book. My first impression was "This is it? This is all there is?" The text is intersting but I was looking for good photos of the individual or groups of diamonds. What you get are pages of uninspired face-on photos (256 in all, I think) of the diamonds in the collection, cropped to the shapes of the stones, with nothing else to make them look remotely interesting. Next to each small (less than an inch) photo is a brief description. The book is mainly a catalog color names with an occasional colorful description or story about a particular diamond. Two stars because it is somewhat interesting to read and the pictures and descriptions are somewhat informative. But if you are looking for nice photos, look elsewhere.
Absolutely stunning photos and easy-to-read text.......2001-02-25
Mr. Hofer's book is wonderful to read or actually wonderful to look at. The photos are absolutely stunning and the text of this catalogue is fairly easy to read (compared to his masterpiece "Collecting and Classifying Coloured Diamonds"). The so-called "common names" for the coloured diamonds are sometimes quite funny and I wonder whether they are recognised the gemworld over. But the book/catalogue is superbly written and a big compliment to the photographer, who has done a fantastic job! (it explains in great detail how the diamonds were photographed). All in all, a gem of a book!!!!

Short and Sweet.......2007-02-15
This book basically describes how the first Iraq war differed from traditional wars of the past. It is not for everyone, Baudrillard has the unfortunate position of being too loose with ideas to be taken very seriously by 'real' academics while at the same time writing in a style that is not easily accessible to a popular audience. His thesis is that the 'war' was primarily a media event that was useful in different ways to both sides of the conflict. He does not dispute that violence and suffering took place, but suggests that the event was not a war as was defined in the past by Clausewitz. Any review that states he is trying to 'hide' the essential suffering of those at the ground of the event is just wrong. There is nothing in the book that questions or calls into doubt the experiences of soldiers or civilians; at the same time it does not dwell upon them.
Opinion never constitutes reality!.......2006-03-16
My! And yes of course he must be right! It never ceases to amaze me how 'self aggrandized' intellectuals can sit back (in the relative safety of their ivory towers) and tell themselves 'stories' generated from their own imaginations, conclusions or biases. Unfortunately they often portray these self conjured stories or opinions as reality. Equally amusing is that there are always those (safely out of harms way as well) who are quick to conclude that the opinions of someone with 'credentials' are indeed actual fact, and that of course, the U.S. Government in particular, is corrupt. After all, we all need a good `hate target' to satisfy our own needs of self righteousness. So we might as well pick the biggest target we can find, right? As someone who has been involved in the global intelligence equation for a number of years, I would conclude that any rational human being capable of thought, would agree that "All Governments" on this planet are corrupt . . . without exception. That corruption would be most readily recognized as self-serving agendas of leaders, want-to-be's, and in many cases the religious power mongers, and even the people, for power, wealth, control, fame, notoriety, etc. etc.. (Sound anything like real life?) Any way, I still applaud the writer in his ability to make a few bucks on his `fantasy' work, and it is very well written.
So what?.......2004-04-29
Yeah, so there was a lot of tv coverage of the Gulf War. Yeah, so some people confuse the tv coverage with what actually went on to the point where the real war is irrelevant. Yeah, so there is a level on which there is a war for public opinion, a purely media war. Beaudrillard says all of this in the tortured language of continental philosophy. Since I love continental philosophy, I appreciate the points he makes about images and simulacra. But he offers not the slightest recognition of the fact that the war DID take place, people, animals, and buildings were destroyed, money and years of work erased, longlasting suffering and illness a legacy among all countries involved . And for that reason, this book made me VERY angry.
The Gulf War Did Not Take Place........2001-07-27
No one can lack commonsense as much as an intellectual, especially a leftist one, and perhaps most of all a renowned French professor of sociology. To show his brilliance, Baudrillard takes a perfectly obvious fact and devotes a book to proving it wrong. In saying that the Kuwait war "did not take place," he means that the fighting was so lopsided, it did not constitute a war. Brushing aside American fears of heavy casualties, he deems that the war "was won in advance." It was, in his view, "a shameful and pointless hoax, a programmed and melodramatic version of what was the drama of war." From the American point of view, he claims, "no accidents occurred in this war, everything unfolded according to a programmatic order." In all, the events of early 1991 stood in relation to war as computer erotics do to actual sex.
Baudrillard's exceedingly slight essay (a compilation of three articles published in the newspaper Libération) ceaselessly hammers away at these themes. He stands midway between the United States and Iraq, faulting each of these main actors about equally. For him, it is all aesthetics and ideology; the deeply important human, economic, and strategic issues raised by the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait disappear under the weight of his relentless abstraction. Thus unconnected from reality, Baudrillard mangles everything from the French president's name to the number of traffic fatalities in the United States. The result is a book of profound error and transcendent stupidity, the most inane ever reviewed in these pages.
Middle East Quarterly, March 1996
Pure sociological poetry.......2000-11-05
A brilliant response to the mediated non-event of the Gulf War - a must read for anyone with lingering illusions on the nature of war in the unipolar post-Cold War world in which media war has eclipsed war itself and Clauswitz's definition fails to find resonance
