Business Intelligence.......2007-05-10
The book could be an invaluable tool for designing SOA-based business intelligence. However, many typing errors exist in the text. Some statements in the book appear to contradict each other. The discussion on the business intelligence, Chapter 5, is difficult to follow. For example Figure 5.4 is very unclear. Specifically, how do the data from the dimensions in the data warehouse move from the data warehouse to the MQE? Where is the link from the data warehouse to the MQE? If the author can clean up all these issues, the book could be an excellent one for designing SOA-based business intelligence.
starts out slow but gains value; good overview of technologies used in SOA.......2007-02-09
I was going to stop reading after Ch 2 of this book, since it was way more than I wanted to know about bulldozers, but Chapter 3 got into some useful information and detail on how the technologies integrate. Each chapter built and finally tied it all together: how BPM, BPML, BPEL, BI are used in SOA. Good big picture overview of all the technologies role. I especially enjoyed the discussion of brokers to retrofit legacy apps.
Must reading for enterprise architects and business strategists.......2007-01-27
In this book, Tom describes an incredibly powerful approach to application development: how to build systems that use Business Processes that decide with business rules. If you follow the industry trends in this area, this development approach is considered to be critical to achieving "business agility". If you had to read one book on either Business Process Management or Business Rules, this is the book to read.
Good Resource.......2007-01-27
This book helps you figure out the different roles of BPM, Business Rules, and Business Intelligence through a series of case studies written in simple English. It's goal isn't to guide you through your project from start to finish, but to get you thinking about how you want to accomplish your goals. I have been working with BPM technology for several years now and I wish I had this resource for my earlier projects.
Average book, not stellar.......2007-01-26
I like Tom's approach to explaining BPM and a rules approach using a real world example. The book had numerous typo's, and I found it hard to believe it made it through the publisher with so many errors. I also found the overall organization of the book to be fair, but the details on each section were not so. Being in the industry, I was expecting more for the money. This book provides a good overview, but not recommended if you plan on moving from discovery into implementation.

Book Description
Students and scholars of the Italian Renaissance easily fall under the spell of its achievements: its self-confident humanism, its groundbreaking scientific innovations, its ravishing artistic production. Yet many of the developments in Italian ceramics and glass were made possible by Italy's
proximity to the Islamic world. The Arts of Fire underscores how central the Islamic influence was on this luxury art of the Italian Renaissance.
Published to coincide with an exhibition at the Getty Museum on view from May 4 to September 5, 2004, The Arts of Fire demonstrates how many of the techniques of glass and ceramic production and ornamentation were first developed in the Islamic East between the eighth and twelfth centuries. These
techniques-enamel and gilding on glass and tin-glaze and luster on ceramics-produced brilliant and colorful decoration that was a source of awe and admiration, transforming these crafts, for the first time, into works of art and true luxury commodities. Essays by Catherine Hess, George Saliba, and
Linda Komaroff demonstrate early modern Europe's debts to the Islamic world and help us better understand the interrelationships of cultures over time.

Compiled and deftly edited by Catherine Hess (Associate Curator of Sculpture, Getty Museum), The Arts Of Fire: Islamic Influences On Glass And Ceramics Of The Italian Renaissance is informationally enhanced by the contributions of George Saliba (Professor of Arabic and Islamic Science, Columbia University) and Linda Komaroff (curator of Islamic Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Graced with a map, 61 color images and 17 b/w illustrations, The Arts Of Fire showcases luxury glass and ceramic objects made by Italian artists and craftsmen during the 15th and 16th centuries -- an era considered to be a high point in Renaissance art. What's less well known is that none of these wonderful creations would have been possible without the introduction of the technological and formal advances in the art and production of glass and ceramic ware imported into Italy from contacts within the Islamic East where they were originally developed and practiced. Also available in a hardcover edition (0892367571, $65.00), The Arts Of Fire is a superb and enthusiastically recommended addition to personal, professional, and academic Art History reference collections, The Arts Of Fire is a joy to simply page through and will leave the reader wondering what other treasures the Getty Museum has within its collections.

Gordon Parks is one of the 20th century's greatest multitalented cultural treasures: a writer, poet, musician, composer, filmmaker, and photographer. In this book--the companion volume to a traveling retrospective--the full flower of Parks's genius is both awe-inspiring in its depth and thorough in its demolition of the era's social-science fictions about African American potential.
Born in Kansas, Parks wandered as a homeless teen, and through wit, smarts, and improvisation--and no experience--landed a job as a photographer for the Farm Security Administration, then with his new skill took pictures for Life magazine. "Tyrants, dictators, dethroned kings," he writes, "all stared into my camera with eyes that were unveiled. The camera revealed them as they were--human beings imprisoned inside themselves." Highlights among his photographic work include the haunting shot of domestic Ella Watson, the starkness of a 1940s teenaged gang leader named Red Jackson lying eternally young in his coffin, and the elegant, life-and-death ballet of the Spanish bullfight. Parks's depiction of Duke Ellington's towering music in motion reflects the importance of jazz and blues in Parks's artistry. From the films Shaft and The Learning Tree (the latter adapted from his own novel) to his impressionistic ballet honoring Martin Luther King Jr., his work swings with an American rhythm that continues to inspire him. "A musical theme vibrates in my sleep," he writes. "I get up, go to the piano, and jot it down. A blustery sky, a crescent moon, or the blazing sun can hurry me to poetry, or to the camera. When the doors of promise open, the trick is to quickly walk through them." --Eugene Holley Jr.

A Great Book by a Great Photographer.......2000-12-08
Buy this book and see the wonderful and varied career of Gordon Parks. See the world through this stunning photographer's eyes, and you will never see the world the same again. Then buy *A Choice of Weapons* and find out how this man came to create these masterworks. Everyone knows his genius as a photographer, filmmaker, and composer, but people may not know that he is a master memoirist as well. Put this book and *A Choice of Weapons* on your Christmas list!
learned so much in one day.......1999-05-20
Seeing the exhibit was the most wonderful day of my life. Getting the book was the next best day. I am not sure if another photographer so talented in all fields will ever appear again. Raad A Choice of Weapons also by Gordon Parks, it will help reinforce the Retrospective.

Superb account of the world he's experienced!.......1998-08-25
Through his poetry and photographs, Parks does an excellent job of allowing the reader to some into the world he has experienced over the years. You feel like you've gone off on assignment with him and like you've have expericned the bigotry first hand. The messages he conveys through his work were way ahead of his time, but right on time in today's world. His intelligence brightly shines through both his photographs and poetry. The narratives, photographs and poetry all make for an outstanding compilation of his feelings and views on the world. Marvelous!

Interviews with a footballing genius.......2006-04-22
Ajax, Barcelona, Cruyff is one of my favourite football books. It's fascinating to read Cruijff's opinions on football. They're so clear - he gets across in a sentence more than you'll ever hear from most footballers. Some of it is so simple, but it really makes sense. Just as an example, he says that the real indication of a good footballer isn't what he can do when he's got lots of space, it's what he can do with none. When I read that, Jack Charlton's "put 'em under pressure" tactics with Ireland, and images of Denis Bergkamp doing things with his first touch that most footballers can't in three come to mind. He says that a good footballer needs just two things - first touch and passing. Everything else is finesse. Think of how the Dutch at their best, or the Brazilians, or Barcelona play - they can all pass a team to death.
The book is written by a couple of Dutch journalists. Cruyff wasn't too generous with interviews - he would charge for them when he did them at all. He trusted the guys who wrote the book though, and they had more access to him than any other journalists. The material in the book comes from interviews with Cruijff over the years, and it makes for fascinating reading.

Book Description
The Art of Expecting is for all the fans of
The Art of Doing Nothing,
The Art of Imperfection, and
The Art of Growing Up, as well as anyone who has even thought about becoming a parent. It is not a book about trimesters or feeding schedules. It is about the art of trusting, the art of nesting, the art of soothing, the art of bustling, and more of life ’s truly fine arts.
Véronique Vienne reminds us that raising a child is a journey, and along the way you need to take the stroller, the car seat, and the diaper bag. She considers colicky babies and colicky parents and offers recipes for the instant comfort of both. On the art of negotiating, she says that what’s good for your ego is usually not good for your child. Some of her sidebars discuss nine months in the life of a man, how to be a sexy mom, and 12 reasons to have kids (there’s always an excuse for baking cookies, for one).
Complementing it all are the gorgeous duotone photographs that have become a trademark of the series, taken quite appropriately by Véronique’s daughter, Jeanne Lipsey.

good medicine for parents-to-be!.......2002-03-19
I found this book to be both entertaining and inspiring. This book is NOT a scientific textbook on birth and childhood. Instead, it tries to convey what it's like to be a parent from an emotional point of view. It's all about bonding with your child and being there for her. It's a fun book but also wise. I'd recommend this as a present for friends' baby showers--particularly if your friend is really stressed out by the thought of becoming a mom!
perfect gift for expectant couples.......2002-03-10
We've been giving Véronique Vienne's "Art of..." books as presents for a lot of occasions, but this one's our new favorite: we like it because it's perfect for both the future mother AND father; fathers are given their due in this book! (which must be unique in books about pregnancy). The text is Vienne's usual funny, apt, sometimes surprising advice; and the pictures are better than ever: there's one of two little girls dancing which is worth the price of the book; another, of a kids' party, shows one child watching on as another seems to be doing the twist--the look on the face of the first is enough to make anyone want to go out and make babies. So, if your kids aren't getting around to propagating as fast as you'd like, perhaps you should give them this book now. Who says you have to wait till someone gets pregnant?
Book Description
Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's heroic opposition to Hitler in 1944 cost him his life. In this intriguing, well-paced tale of a journalistic coup, Marshall, the first to discover the real events behind Rommel's death, tells how he learned the facts from Rommel's widow and delves into the great general's background and death. He arrived at his conclusions based on his intimate knowledge of men on Rommel's staff and his access to Rommel's papers, including letters from the general to his wife. Here, for the first time in paperback, is the exciting story of how the world learned about the way the "Desert Fox" met his death.

Authorative Account of Rommel's Life and Military Career.......2000-05-12
Charles Marshall has done an excellent job in preparing a literary work that is, in my studied opinion, a complete overview of Rommel...as a man and military genius. Marshall's detailed account of Rommel's life is reinforced by information received during interviews with Rommel's widow as well as the letters Rommel sent her during the African campaigns. Further, Marshall, as a former Army Intelligence Officer during WWII, relies heavily on his own detailed diary enteries of interviews with German/Nazi officals in captivity prior to the end of the war. Marshall's work details Rommel's life from pre WWI through his untimely death, forced by Adolf Hitler, before the end of WWII. If there is only one true account of Rommel's life, "Discovering the Rommel Murder" is it.
