My contractor loved it..........2005-06-03
I am in the process of remodeling my 60 year old Cape using ideas from this book. I showed my contractor the book so he would know what I wanted to do & he joked that he almost walked off with it. Great ideas - great detail. Whatever your style.
where is middle america?.......2003-12-04
If my cape was on the ocean this would be a good source of ideas. However, it offers little for the typical solid, somewhat plain capes that populate middle America. I love mine and could use some practical advice - this book doesn't help much.
The ultimate Cape Book............2003-11-04
My husband and i just recently purchase a Cape house and were use to living in less traditional houses....This book gives us so many inspirations on how to make our new house more us! We took it out of the library before we moved in and.....haven't returned it yet! I think it's time to get one of our own! We took out 50+ books but this one was just what we wanted to see sooooo many ideas! Not frumpy - clean lines, open spaces, etc...
For readers who are doers.......2003-10-01
If the number of reviews seems scant, it's probably because readers of this book are inspired to head for their drawing boards or take sledgehammer to wall, rather than compose a book review. Who has time to write a paragraph or two for Amazon when there are contractors to call and design decisions to make? This book will motivate you Cape owners out there to finally make the updates that you've been thinking about since you moved in -- whether it's just replacing rusty bathroom cabinets or adding that extra bedroom so your two boys don't have to share a room anymore.
Valuable, useful and enjoyable.......2003-08-06
Jane Gitlin's book is a pleasure to read -- again and again. My wife and I own a classic Cape. We've spent the past 10 years renovating it, bit by bit. Now we're contemplating a major exterior remodeling project and Jane's book is a treasure trove of excellent ideas. The text and photos offer many creative alternatives to the standard, time-worn designs suggested by many architects and contractors. The book truly renewed our sense of pride in owning a classic Cape. Bravo!

Breathtaking Images Open A New World.......2004-06-21
The photography of Peter Sanders takes us into a new world of possibilties and challenges us to humanise the "other". A man who straddles East and West, Sanders captures the spiritual depth and universal message of the lived Muslim experience in a way few others have. Each photograph is the starting point for a narrative that ought to be written by those who view them. A blessed and marvelous work!
A must-have - unique and rare view into the Islamic world.......2004-06-02
I had the pleasure of stumbling across this book recently and purchasing it through Amazon; it contains striking pictures of Islamic people & places captured by Peter Sanders, a famous English photographer. The associated descriptions and quotes from Islamic sources for each impeccably selected photograph greatly enhance the high production quality.
In this day and age where the electronic media is replete with images of death, destruction, and violence this book serves as a breath of fresh air, evoking the simplicity and beauty inherent in being near to one's Creator.
Mr. Sanders has a great gift to see the world through a beautiful lens, and to be able to share it with Muslims and non-Muslims alike. He has a well-crafted web site (which I'll fail to mention, respecting Amazon's review guidelines) that contains a mini-photo gallery - as well as info on his forthcoming books in the series which I hope to see available here soon, inshAllah (God willing).
If you're still debating whether to buy this book or not, stop and just click the button; trust me, you won't regret this purchase one bit! :)
If you want to know ..........2003-11-21
This book came as a gift from a dear friend who happens to be a Christian from Britain. His note read "I thought you might appreciate this lovely book." Lovely it is indeed. In many ways. A gift that is a challenge to repay.
Great photographers' through their works get us to see and comprehend the world surrounding us. A few among great photgraphers are able to translate to us through their images what we miss or are not able to see inside the people arround us.
Peter Sanders' work gives us glimpses of many insides. It is a look at many parts of the world of Islam. But as you go through the images and the words you see straight into the crevaces of Sanders' yearning. And from his inside you can see much of what it is to be a muslim. A word that means something along the line: one who is willfully submiting in peace, to the Peace.
In these days of many horrors this work is a gift for those who want to know. A gift for searching hearts.
Amazing Pictorial of North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.......2002-10-15
Peter Sanders, one of the first non-Muslim's (Before he entered Islam) to take photo's of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, has put together an excellent pictorial journey through specific countries and places.
While the cover claims, "An Odyssey through the Muslim World", I would choose to call this collection a glimpse into the heart of Peter Sanders.
Mr. Sanders went through his extensive collection of photographs taken from throughout the World, and picked ones that he felt had something to say. He placed a quick commentary and some words of wisdom together with each photograph, and created this book.
Some of the pictures are breathtaking, and some are not so breathtaking. Some of the pictures become breathtaking after reading the commentary; Several pictures made me scratch my head in puzzlement. But after reading Mr. Sander's explanation, I found a new appreciation for the pictures.
I think the book can pass off as an interesting coffee table book. Some people though, will find the photo's and the commentary exceptionaly interesting, and find the book much more then an idle conversation passer.
Anybody interested in exceptional photography (In my limited appreciation of photography) from North Africa and the Middle East will find this book worth the cost.
Peter Sanders is an acquantance of Shaikh Hamza Yusuf; for some people, that might be enough reference to purchase the book.

Three adaptations of Raymond Chandler's tales of the classic noir PI Philip Marlowe
Customer Reviews:
Love colorful illustrations, abbreviated comic style dialog I could'nt get use to........2006-07-13
This Philip Marlowe Graphic novel looks great but I'm a big fan of Raymond Chandler's short stories and novels and I just could'nt get use to the shorten dialog, though I know it was necessary for the comic book style mode. Just the same the illustrations are superb.
A New Style for Philip Marlowe........2005-06-08
My first impresssion was what a shame to make a comic book out of Raymond Chandler's classic crime novels. But, the more I got into it, I realized what a great idea -- as this novel beginning can educate a whole different audience, a new generation, those whose concentration allows them to read only this type of format in literature.
The hair styles of the women and short, wide ties of the men date the stories, making this new process appear old. Just today, I told a tall man "I like your tie" which was wide, bright, and long.
Included are three stories featuring Philip Marlowe of Hollywood, California, GOLDFISH, TROUBLE IN MY BUSINESS, and THE PENCIL (by Helga Greene). Marlowe represents the basic conflict of the human condition. He works hard at his job, but is not always successful in his 'heroic quest for the truth.'
Chandler wrote: "as (a) detective, outside the story and above it, and always will be." He should have known -- he created this 'misogynistic' character. In movies, Marlowe has been acted out by Humphrey Bogart, Dick Powell, and Robert Mitchum.
The creator, R. Chandler, was born in Chicago but educated in England. His first Philip Marlowe novel, THE BIG SLEEP, was published in 1939. He continued writing for twenty years in America until his death in 1959.
These were adapted to this format by Tom DeHaven, James Rose and Jerome Charyn for Byron Preiss Visual Publications. I hope they will do more, as these are delightful.
Loved it.......2004-03-12
A great Steranko cover. Found the artwork on the first story to be the best but overall this was a great buy for anyone who likes Raymond Chandler. Totally recommended.
marlowe in three interpretations--all fascinating comics.......2003-09-08
this books collects three top chandler stories in comics form on heavy shiny paper. the adaptations are all terrific and "The Pencil" the adaptation of Chandler's last Marlowe short story is by Jerome Charyn, himself a top mystery writer. The art byRian Hughes for "Goldfish" is stunning. Noted comic book illustrator
David Lloyd does Charyn proud with "The Pencil." Well-priced and framed by two Steranko covers.

Book Description
The Christian community is full of dear ladies discouraged because their husbands lack vision to lead the family with gusto. In some cases, the men are simply overwhelmed with present responsibilities. In other cases, they lack a biblical framework for household leadership. It certainly does not help when men have poor role models in their own lives, which is the case for a growing majority of husbands. Often wives cry out, "Help, my husband just doesn't get it," or, "I want more children, but my husband says `no,'" or even, "My husband is nervous about home schooling." For more than ten years, Doug and Beall Phillips have spoken with hundreds who share these sentiments. But, too often, wives contribute to the problem through a wrong response. The great news is that the Bible anticipates this crisis of leadership in the home and provides crystal clear direction for wives. Wise women will desire to bless their husband's vision by embracing the specific affirmative and negative biblical commands given to them for this very purpose. Those who do will become a sanctifying influence on their household, grow in spiritual maturity, and become God's vehicle for their husband's spiritual revival. This series is meant to encourage both wives and husbands with the principles and the practicalities for men and women growing in family vision for the Lord.

Every Married Christian Woman Needs This!.......2007-09-04
Doug Phillips has a timeless message for women on this set. My entire family listened and I, as Mom, was exhorted and challenged, my children learned what are the godly expectations for a woman in marriage (of which my son especially took note!) and my husband, delighted that we all were listening, was encouraged to move out in areas, knowing that I was in hearty agreement with the premise of whole-heartedly supporting him as he leads us. This is a gift I plan to give every young woman planning for marriage.
A convicting and hopeful view of God's purpose in marriage........2005-06-16
After three years of marriage, my husband and I (both Christians) had already discussed divorced. I 'accidentally' (in God's providence) stumbled across this CD while perusing Douglas Phillips' website, and I thought it looked like something that would be edifying to me. I cannot accurately put into words the blessing this picture of a biblical marriage has been to me. Phillips does direct some of the lecture to husbands, but the majority of it is teaching us wives how to be godly wives, regardless of our husbands. I was so convicted of my sins, but more than that, my despair has given way to hope of God's working righteousness in me and my husband. Phillips is very discerning in laying out how a husband's lack of vision affects his wife and what sins he contributes to by his failings (not that the husband's sins excuse the wife's). And he is very clear in pointing out how Scripture addresses this situation. I have listened to the CDs twice in the past week since I got the set and have already loaned them out to several friends.
Book Description
How did the horrendous situation in Afghanistan, with all its implications for recent events and the present time, come to pass? What was the role of the CIA and Pakistani intelligence in the creation of what became the Taliban? What are the implications for the future and lessons from the past for American forces today?
This highly controversial book reveals one of the greatest military, political and financial secrets of recent times. It is nothing less than the true, if fantastic, account of how Pakistan and the USA covertly controlled the largest guerrilla war of the 20th Century, dealing to the Soviet Russian presence in Afghanistan a military defeat that has come to be called 'Russia's Vietnam'.
This compelling book, put together with great skill by the military author, Mark Adkin, is essential reading for anyone interested in the truth behind the Soviets' Vietnam, and the reasons why, to this day, the war in Afghanistan still drags on despite the victory that the Mujahideen were denied when the Soviets withdrew. ?
Customer Reviews:
How to slay a giant.......2007-07-24
This is a Pakistani account of operations supporting the Mujahideen during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. First published in 1992 it predates the Taliban and 9/11 giving an `unvarnished' view of events.
The main theme is how the US helped the Mujahideen to the threshold of victory, only to yank the rug out from under them at the last minute. That contrasts sharply with the American narrative in which we helped the Afghan freedom fighters overcome the Soviet goliath (and then the credits rolled). Those aren't the only narratives at play, but the book gives an important slice of what was going on in Afghanistan during the 80's and how it contributed to what followed.
OUTSTANDING ACCOUNT OF THE AFGHAN RESISTANCE AS TOLD BY ITS ARCHITECT.......2006-03-19
THIS IS A FACTUAL, READABLE AND DETAILED, INSIDER'S ACCOUNT OF THE AFGHAN WAR AGAINST THE SOVIETS. THAT SAID, IT MOVES WELL ENOUGH TO MAINTAIN THE READER'S INTEREST.
THE AUTHOR LITERALLY COULDN'T BE MORE QUALIFIED TO SPEAK. AS HEAD OF THE PAKISTANI INTELLIGENCE SERVICE'S AFGHAN BUREA FOR FOUR CRUCIAL YEARS FROM 1983-1987, HE WAS THE STRATEGIC AND SOMETIMES TACTICAL BRAINS BEHIND THE MUJAHIDEEN EFFORT AGAINST THE SOVIETS, PROVIDING LEADERSHIP FOR MUJAHIDIN COMMANDERS IN THE FIELD AS WELL AS THE OVERALL CONCEPT OF OPERATIONS. HE IS ARTICULATE AND COGENT IN HIS PRESENTATION (THE BOOK IS QUITE WELL WRITTEN) AS WELL AS SURPRISINGLY VULNERABLE IN WHAT HE SHARES.
WHAT RESULTS IS AN AUTHORITATIVE AND PERSONAL ACCOUNT OF THE SOVIET AFGHAN WAR, TOLD BY THE PAKISTANI GENERAL WHO SERVED AS ITS ARCHITECT. THE AUTHOR LAYS OUT HIS THINKING AND INVITES THE READER INTO THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS (AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY) AS HE SEEKS TO DISCERN HOW BEST TO EMPLOY HIS LIMITED AND DISPARATE FORCES AND RESOURCES TO OPPOSE (AND EVENTUALLY DEFEAT) THE VASTLY SUPERIOR FIREPOWER AND TECHNOLOGY OF THE SOVIET ARMY. HE LAYS OUT THE IMMENSE LOGISTICAL, POLITICAL AND CULTURAL PROBLEMS WHICH FACED HIM AT THE OUTSET.
IN THIS BOOK THE READER BASICALLY GETS TO SIT DOWN WITH PAKISTANI BRIGADIER GENERAL MOHAMMAD YOUSEF AND LISTEN TO HIM TELL HIS STORY. IT'S QUITE AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY IF THOUGHT OF IN THOSE TERMS... I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT TO THOSE WITH AN INTEREST IN THE HISTORICAL EVENTS WHICH HE DESCRIBES, OR THOSE WITH A GENERAL INTEREST IN EITHER PAKISTAN, AFGHANISTAN OR THE MILITARY DECISION MAKING PROCESS. IVE READ SEVERAL BOOKS OF SIMILAR SUBJECT MATTER - THIS ONE IS REALLY A GEM.
The Birds Eye View.......2006-01-11
Afghan/Soviet War books can be broken up into a finite set of subjects. Personal/First Person Journalist account, War tactics or High level political/war analysis.
This book is squarely in the last category. A view of the war as described by the Pakistani ISI Brigadier General who ran it.
Regardless of the fact that the book is one sided, I found the book invaluable as a reference on how the Pakistani's ran the war. From Supply chain, US politics, right to on-the-ground tactics; the General goes over everything. At some points admitting Government secrets (That had probably be unclassified by print time).
An excellent book, well written, and interesting. The book even reviews at a tactical level, many battles you can read in "The Other Side of the Mountain".
This book won't cover the entire war, but is a great high level view of the Pakistani operational framework.
A Paean to Pakistan -- and Little Else.......2006-01-05
The CIA:
1: was (probably) responsible for Zia'a death
2: didn't know the first thing about how to wage a guerilla war
3: either allowed or participated in widespread corruption and theft
4: was foolishly reluctant to install an Islamic fundamentalist government in Kabul, and
5: at the end, intentionally pulled the rug out from under the Mujahadeen.
Pakistan's ISI, on the other hand, was wise, incorruptible and only cared about winning the war.
Other than maybe 10 pages describing a handful of battles, I've just told you everything there is in this book.
Interesting but limted in scope.......2005-12-07
It seems that most authors writing on the conflict between the Mujahideen and the Soviets choose their favorite guerilla leader and pay tribute to him alone. Too often this leaves a substantial gap in the grander scheme of the Afghan war. Mohammad Yousaf is no exception.
Being the head of the Afghan bureau of the ISI, Yousaf seems to have been in close contact with Gal Badin Hekmatyar and places the chieftan in high regards. However, Hekmatyar has been equally labeled a guerilla mastermind and a cowardly schemer. Yousaf fails to acknowledge the more unflattering aspects of Hekmatyar's reputation or spends much time discussing other commanders like Abdul Haq and Ahmed Shah Massod.
However, Yousaf does provide a very enlightening discussion of Soviet and Afghan tactics. With numerous maps illustrating a number of Mujahideen operations, the reader is granted a better understanding of how the war was fought on the ground.
Furthermore, Yousaf's high ranking position does provide useful insight into how the United States funded the Mujahideen with weapons and supplies through Pakistan's intelligence service. Still, I would have liked to see Yousaf lend greater depth to the role Saudi Arabia played in funding the more fundamental guerilla factions.
All in all, Yousaf's work is an interesting contribution to the work written on the Afghan war. However, it is limited in scope and is tinged with biases. In order to truly understand the war in Afghanistan, a different text would be more appropriate.
Book Description
This work provides a concise history, from ancient to modern times, of the interactions between human societies and the other forms of life that inhabit our planet. It investigates the ways in which environmental changes, often the result of human actions, have caused historical trends in human societies.
