Customer Reviews:
Quite useless.......2007-04-26
It discusses in detail obvious stuff, and then references you to textbooks for more advanced topics. So it is more of a basic reference for the things you practice everyday, than a way to help you remember the topics you did during your undergrad degree
Okay.......2007-01-23
This book is okay. It's not very in-depth. I would pay the extra money and get a more thorough study guide.
Useless.......2007-01-06
Talk about a big disappointment.I was expecting a book that would really help me prepare for the civil discipline specific portion of the EIT exam. Unfortunately this book only skims the top of major topics and does not go into any sort of detail whatsoever. It's not a complete book, i think it miss more than 50% of the course. My suggestion would be to leave this book alone and study from reference text books.
Did someone forget to proofread?.......2006-09-19
I got this book last week and I've only worked through the second chapter but I've already found 4 mistakes. Grammatical mistakes I can handle but what I've come across are technical mistakes, units - poorly photocopied diagrams, mislabeled examples, that I cannot handle. If you're the publisher or one of the contributors reading this review you should be ashamed of yourself. Save your money, stick to Michael R. Lindeburg.

Customer Reviews:
Buy the hardcopy instead. The eBook has no CD........2005-01-23
The paperback version of this book includes a CD, and the book is organized around the materials on that CD. Neither the CD nor the materials on it are provided with the eBook. So you can read about things you should be able to do if you had the CD, but you can't do any of them. You'd think somebody would have thought of that before converting the paperback to eBook format. As it is, the ebook is almost the same price as the hardcopy but is next to useless.
excellent practical introduction to Premiere for novices.......2003-12-27
This book should be looked at as a companion to Adobe manual, or as a practical introduction to Premiere. It guides the user, which is assumed to be a complete novice in Premiere, step by step through hands-on lessons and explains along the way some ideas and principles of digital video editing. As all other "classroom in a book" manuals, it is very well edited proofread (which means that it contains very few errors - if the authors say "click on icon A in palette B", they mean exactly that) and all files which the book refers to can indeed be found on the enclosed CD (I saw so many books with some of the tutorial files missing...). Unlike some other reviewers, I had no problems reproducing the actions described in the book on the computer screen, as long as I was careful to reproduce the steps exactly as they are described.
All this said, this book is not intended to be used as an advanced level manual. While it touches to some extent all features of Premiere, it does not necessarily goes into details of all of them. One could definitely benefit from a combination of practical lessons offered by this book with insights that can be found in other books. But it is invaluable as a means of the first exposure to Premiere and as a way to get a basic practical training in Premiere in a short time.
The tutorial files and the structure of lessons are the same as in the earlier version of the book, "Premiere 5.0 classroom in a book". The difference in mostly in explanation of DV format, DV capture, and new features of the timeline and audio editing. This book can also be used for Premiere 6.5 since the difference is primarily in improved title editor and availability of MPEG2 export.
I read this book twice within a week, first time just reproducing step after step and trying to grab the concepts, and the second time playing around and experimenting. After these two readings, I feel that I have a good understanding of the program and understand its functions and procedures involved in digital editing to the level sufficient to apply this knowledge to practical editing.
I do believe that "learning by doing" is the best way to learn how to work with a piece of software. Therefore, I ranked it 5 stars - with a note "book for beginners"
Why the bad reviews? This book is GREAT!!.......2002-12-12
Whoa! I see read some bad reviews for this book! And I totally disagreed with them. Sure some of you major in computer programming, engineer, and many other occupations. but your going to have to be realistic and realize that this is "premiere" this is NLE ( Non-Linear Editing) and if your not familiar with it. Of course your going to have difficulty learning it.
This book is great! This is the second adobe premiere book i got. I was intimidated by it at first so i bought "Adobe Premiere The Visually in full color 6.0" you know that book with pretty pictures. However i came to the point that if i really want to learn premiere i am going to have to challenge my self and i did that!
Its not impossible to learn adobe premiere! However its not simple either! If you want to just cut and paste and add transitions. That will take you less then an hour. However if you want to learn how to add effects, work with keys, over laying, audio, superimposing, etc., etc., etc. This is the book for you, In other words if you want to be a very experience user with premiere get this book! If you want a challenge get this book! If you want to make profesional Video get this book!
If you want to make simple home video, Just learn some of the basics, Cut, Paste, Transitions and compression. Or get Video Wave and graduate from it and come to premiere. ( I did )

Bad!!! Bad!!! Too Confusing!! Don't Buy!!!!.......2002-11-17
I first decided to learn Adobe After Effects 7.0. I used that classroom in a book and it was fabulous. Within 2 days I was done with the book and had learned a lot. The After Effects 7.0 book was consistent: When it told you to do something, what they expected that you would get, you DID get. If there would be something fishy, the book would say " Your going to see Blah, Blah, Blah, but don't worry, we will take care of that later." And they did! With this Premier 6.0 book, I have been working on the preview lesson (Tour) for an entire day and am always asking "What???" The book tells me to do something...I do it...later on when I playback my video things are clearly wrong. I finally just started blindly trusting what it said to do, thinking that the issues I was seeing would be cleared up later, just that they are not letting me know. Wrong! This book just isn't clear and consistent. I'm going to try to keep going...maybe the rest of the lessons will be better, but I am extremely disappointed.

The Complete Crepax.......2000-05-08
This volume along with it's companion "Emmanuelle" also published by Taschen present the great works by comics/illustration master Guido Crepax. The black and white linework is beautifully reproduced on glossy paper and is sure to satisfy fans of Crepax. These are a very nice improvement over the paperback editions published by NBM.

Featured players: Jaromir Jagr, Daniel Alfredsson, Pavel Bure, Chris Chelios, Peter Forsberg, Wayne Gretzky, Jarome Iginla, Saku Koivu, Eric Lindros, Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, Teemu Selanne, Brendan Shanahan, Mats Sundin, Oleg Tverdovsky, John Vanbiesbrouck, and Doug Weight. I was surprised that players like Brett Hull, Mike Modano, Curtis Joseph, and Mark Messier weren't included in this book. Okay pictures, but you can get more information about these players by reading a scouting report.

The Classic Guide That Helps You Select the Books the Child You Know Will Love
In this third, fully revised and updated edition of
The New York Times Parent's Guide to the Best Books for Children, the children's book editor of The New York Times Book Review personally selects and recommends books for children of every age.
The most comprehensive and authoritative book of its kind has been completely updated for the new millennium. It contains hundreds of new entries, many expanded descriptions, and notations of additional companion and related titles -- more than l,700 in all. The best-loved classics of the twentieth century are included, as well as a thoughtful selection of outstanding titles from the last decade.
Six sections are organized according to reading level: Wordless, Picture, Story, Early Reading, Middle Reading, and Young Adult. In addition to a summary of the book, each entry provides the essential bibliographic information you need to find a book in your local library or bookstore, including
title
author and/or illustrator
hardcover and/or paperback publisher and publication year
major awards
related titles
The unique and most popular feature of the guide is its system of special indexes -- more than sixty in all. They make it easy for parents and grandparents, teachers and librarians, even children themselves, to match the right book to the right child. Browse through the indexes and find titles for every interest and mood: picture books about cats, mice, or dinosaurs for babies; funny books to read aloud to toddlers; series about family life or school or fantasy adventures for a middle-grade child; books on divorce or death; and coming-of-age novels just right for someone starting junior high school. There are also indexes for books about minorities and religion, an age-appropriate reading-level index, and much more.
Lavishly decorated with more than three hundred illustrations from representative titles, the guide also features extra-wide margins for notes on which of your children liked which book, at what age, and why. Thus the guide becomes a family reading record as well as an invaluable resource you'll use again and again.

Useful Resource - a review of the NY Time Guide to Childrens Books.......2006-03-22
It's not the end-all of children's book research (Amazon is just as useful) but the NY Times Guide can be a valuable tool and resource for parents in the early years.
Pros
-- Useful author index that points you to other books by authors you enjoy
-- Useful topic index, with topics such as health, death, history...
-- Helpful, though short, description of many popular books
-- It is particularly good, for example, when you looking up topic ideas -- as when you need a children's book on adoption or death
-- Good for those times when you are looking for ideas but can't quite put you finger on what you want to buy or check out of the library next
-- In addition to using the book as a source of ideas, I also use it to keep track of books we have enjoyed or loathed.
Cons
-- My principle complaint is that there are so many good authors that are not covered. For example, how can they not mention the Rev. Awdry, author of the many Thomas the Tank Engine stories. Also, I have found their `early reading section' to be deficient. They do not include any primers or series. Not even all of the dozens and dozens of Margaret Hillert.
Four Stars. [B-]. A useful resource for parents or other buyers of children books.

For New Parents. If your kids are 6 - up, not for you.......2005-10-23
This is great for early books, for books for toddlers and early readers. The description gives the impression that it is a guide for many years of childhood. My boys are 7 and 8 and there is nothing in this book for them.
But my neices are 1 and 2 and their Mom will be getting this book for Christmas.
An updated review........2005-02-08
Now is 2005, so this book is four years old. I wanted to write an updated review here to let anyone who is considering a copy of this volume that I think it would be worth it to pick up a used copy for five bucks or so. Obviously, it doesn't include anything that's been published in the last four years, so in that sense, it's utility can be limiting, but most of the books that are reviewed are still in print. One of the book's features that I appreciated the most was that it includes a bibliography of wordless books, and unlike other such lists I have found, most of the books are actually in print and I don't have to try to order a copy from some small press overseas.
Another thing I've used this book for is for suggestions for birthday presents for my nieces. Since they're not the same age as my kids, I'm not as familar with what they might be ready to read.
Delightful resource for involved parents!.......2003-11-09
This book is very straight-forward and easy to use, chock full of useful information. The organization is simple, and listings are complete (containing year published and prizes received, as well as author, illustrator and edition info) and informative. Not only do they give information about the content and it's value to a child, but also its source and its context and an opinion about the best edition in which to invest and the availability of different editions (where useful)!
Wide margins are included, for note-taking.
There are multiple indexes at the end which are invaluable in themselves - about 80 pages worth! The titles are indexed by title, author, illustrator, age-appropriate, and special subject. A bibliography is also included.
This resource is a valuable and delightful resource for any family
very helpful, but not perfect.......2001-09-29
This is a wonderful tool for parents trying to guide their children's early reading intelligently. The organization of the book and the descriptions of each book are generally helpful, though information about age level and number of pages should have been included. Organizing categories in the main listing are vaguely defined (wordless books, picture books, story books, early reading books, middle reading books and young adult books), making the indexes the better access point. These indexes are sufficient to help you find a relevant book. There is: a title list; an author list; an illustrator list; an age appropriate list (which might have based a better organization for the main listing); a read-aloud list; and a subject list of 53 headings, including Adoption, Adventure, Alphabet, Bedtime, Divorce, Horses and Nature.
The author renders a valuable service in examining multiple editions of popular books, for example you might find that one particular treatment of the Mother Goose tales is rather musical and illustrated with pen and ink drawings, while another is more colorfully animated and textually simplified for very young readers.
Unless you really know children's literature, a book like this is an invaluable tool. Similar but more directed resources are Great Books for Boys and Great Books for Girls by Kathleen Odean, which is organized into reading levels and then genre, and includes age level but not page count. Jim Trelease's The Read-Aloud Handbook is a very good, somewhat evangelical, resource organized by genre with age level and page count included in the description.

The definitive work on Bosnia.......2000-06-14
Burg and Shoup's book will stand for some years as the definitive work on the Bosnian war and the missteps of international intervention there. It is a must read by anyone interested in what happened in that mountainous Balkan country.
This book is rather detailed and is not meant to be a 'quick read' for the casual reader. Instead, it uses a vast array of sources from the region as well as the Western press and interviews to make its case about the goals of the three sides as well as the desire of the 'West' to stay out of the conflict. Furthermore, it provides a much-needed and accessible overview of the various peace plans and maps which aimed at stopping the carnage in Bosnia.
It is an excellent book which sets a new standard for research on ethnic conflicts and international policy.
Book Description
Since the end of the cold war, a series of costly civil wars, many of them ethnic conflicts, have dominated the international security agenda. The international community, often acting through the United Nations or regional organizations like NATO, has felt compelled to intervene with military forces in many of these conflicts -- four of which comprise the heart of this book: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Somalia, Cambodia, and Rwanda. Civil Wars, Insecurity, and Intervention is a detailed examination by a host of distinguished scholars of these recent interventions in order to draw lessons for today's policy debates.
The contributors view ethnic conflict and internal war through the prism of the concept of the security dilemma -- a situation in which parties with strong incentives to cooperate wind up nonetheless in bloody competition out of distrust of the opponent. Civil Wars, Insecurity, and Intervention assesses how international intervention can help solve the security dilemma in civil wars by designing political and military arrangements that make security commitments credible to the warring parties. The mixed record of partial successes, failures, and in some cases counterproductive interventions suggests an urgent need to extract lessons with a view toward developing a framework for making future policy choices.
