Customer Reviews:
Outstanding book.......2007-06-05
It's really hard to say too many things about this book. Even older editions of Color Drawing are great, but this newest one goes above and beyond the call of duty. In an age when a lot of books get re-released as new editions with few substantive changes, Color Drawing breaks the mold by updating the techniques with current technology (i.e. Photoshop). It's great to see that the author and publisher realize that pure hand-drawing and rendering is quickly becoming a thing of the past and that the practitioners of today and tomorrow need to have excellent computer skills too. This book is full of very useful tips for combining Photoshop with hand drawings to create great effects. So even if you have an earlier edition, do yourself a favor and buy the new one anyway because you will learn a lot.
Color Drawing: Design Drawing Skills and Techniques for Architects, Landscape Architects, and Interior Designers, 2nd Edition.......2007-01-06
This is an excellent resouce for the study of rendering. After detailing the elements of color and design, it describes, step-by-step, how to achieve many finishes both interior and exterior. It is both instructive and informative.
Outstanding Resource.......2007-01-03
This is the standard for rendering in architecture and interior design as far as I am concerned. It will most definitely become a required textbook for my classes in visual presentation in the years to come. Doyle takes you step-by-step into the process of rendering with marker, color pencil, and pastels. But he doesn't just spoon feed you the recipe for each material rendering, he presents the basis for a process that allows you to render virtually any material not found in the book.
EXCELLENT rendering help.......2006-02-25
My rendering skills have improved HUGELY scince recieving this book. It helps with marker, colored pencils, pastels, how to treat light, etc. My renderings look amazing and it is a great reference for when I'm not sure how to treat a surface/object. I would absolutely recommend this book.
Color Drawing Book.......2005-09-26
I needed this book expedited and it got to me even before the dates listed on my confirming email. Very pleased.

Customer Reviews:
Few good shots, systematic... but not really worth it........2007-05-15
After i got other Lemon's book(colorful "nude&glamour photography") i sworn to never get anything from same author. Well i broke this oath, buying this B&W book.
Dont get me wrong - photos in book are , mostly , good. In fact this book is better than colour, one, as it at least has more system to it and got light setups.
Unfortunately - thats about it. Its is not "professional secrets" its "here, i had this model, and took this picture, setting up lights". If you had ever read a single good book on light... I'd skip this book. Its not particularly good on posing either - in fact you can find more posing guides online nowdays, for free, than you will see in this book.
If i would be just starting up - may be i'd appetiate book as a thing "do as i am and you will make good shot". Unfortunately (?) i am not, so it was browsing through book for 30 mins, and now its dead paperweight.
Perfect for learning.......2006-12-15
Bill has a great mode of teaching, he shows you how to do your job and push you to do it better. Great book from a great artist.
A standard.......2003-12-02
Bill Lemon does it right. Its a simple, and easy to read book on photographing women. It covers positions and lighting that work consistantly. Nice diagrams and examples with enough text to inform. Should be in every photographers library.
Like the sky and the sun.......2002-01-08
Light and beauty go together like the sky and the sun. When a professional photographer is in harmony with beautiful models and their environment they will create images that reflects this light and beauty. That's what you will find in Bill Lemons new book "Professional Secrets Of Nude & Beauty Photography". This book is full of exceptional images illustrating outstanding lighting techniques and beautiful models posed in flattering ways.
This book is more then just beautiful people and well-lit sets. There is substance here as well. "Nude & Beauty Photography" is full of instruction, inspiration and creative tips. Each setup is outlined in a narrative, with lighting graphics and equipment/film details. The reader can learn tips on posing, camera angles, composition, lighting, selecting models and much more.
Bill Lemon knows his craft and illustrates it with provocative and creative images. Further, he knows how to explain his techniques in ways that are understandable to average photographer. He gives you just the right balance between instruction and enjoyment. If you?re just a 'looker' or want to be a 'learner' I can highly recommend "Nude & Beauty Photography".
Sensational posing and lighting style........2001-12-24
A fantastic book with great ideas, fantastic posing and an inspiration for any photographer that wants to photograph women. Personally I find Lemon's books easy to follow and find his posing techniques superlative. He has the ability to make average women look stunning with his beauty lighting, posing and make-up. Bill Lemon is a master of Beauty, Glamour and Nude photography

Book Description
For over ten years Joe Matt has been notorious in cult circles for the embarrassing frankness with which he reveals his distressing habits and predilections. Utterly shameless and completely self-absorbed, Joe Matt writes with an exhibitionist’s enthusiasm for his favorite subject, himself.
The first incarnation of Peepshow was these one-page strips in which Joe shows off virtuosity for shocking self-revelation. He is an immature, womanizing, cowardly, cheap, porn freak. He also has crack comic timing and a remarkable gift for (self) caricature.
The books of Joe Matt provokes this confession from guys over beer:
Oh my god, he’s just like me. I think those things but I never say them because my girlfriend would leave me.
This diary collection made Joe Matt the hero he is today.
Customer Reviews:
Not re-readable- bad spine.......2006-07-20
I found this book very worthwhile. I originally bought it, and after browsing through the inside, I was about to immediately return it (found the art tiny and unappealing). I decided to read it anyway, and found that I enjoyed it alot. This book contains a bunch of B&W vignettes and stories about the author and his girlfriends. He is painfully honest and the flow is awesome (think: Crumb, Clowes), but there is one problem. I only buy graphic novels so that i can re-read them forever. After first reading, the binding began to rip, and the first two pages fell out.
Love the book, but if I can't re-read it (because spine falls apart), goodbye!
Believe it or not , It's all true.......2004-03-16
I loved this book. Joe is being more honest than most of you might believe. I grew up in that "small suburb of Philadelphia" directly across that street from Joe, and I have to tell you that the stories are real. It was like reliving my childhood reading Peepshow. That underground fort across the street from 7-11...my older brothers helped build it. He was as germ-phobic, and nerotic in real life as he is in Peepshow.
I am however disappointed that my brothers and I never got a mention in the book.
This is JUNK. Gloomy, self-involved JUNK.......2003-08-18
The problem with taking Harvey Pekar's comic works as a guide and trying to do the same thing is that it requires a huge talent--you must do it exactly right for it to work. Joe Matt shows us how it ISN'T done.
Pekar chronicles his own life, warts and all. Joe Matt can't see past the warts, and has come to the erroneous conclusion that simply recording his problems and fears equals *A*R*T*. It ain't that easy!
Pekar, although he writes about himself, also pays attention to the people around him. They're forever saying things that you find yourself remembering. Joe Matt's view of life is adolescently centered on himself, and everyone around him is reduced to shallow caricatures. Yes, he is self-aware of this, but that doesn't make the end result worth reading.
Wonderfully Honest.......2000-05-15
At first I wasn't so sure about Joe Matt but he's really grown on me. He's so painfully honest about himself that it's amazing. Especially the story where he beat up his girlfriend. That was shocking that he included it in his comix... most would edit something like that out. He has a wonderful grasp on the stuggles of long-term relationships - and he manages to keep it pretty damn funny at the same time. His more recent comics about his problems(?) with porn are wonderful too. Any man who isn't embarrased to print a 10 page comic of himself dubbing his friends' porno movies is a saint in my book. Wonderful.
Joe Matt's Angst Ridden Peep Show.......2000-04-18
Comic artist Joe Matt's first comic strips are collected in this fantastic volume. Included is an intimate look at Joe's nervous world of girl troubles and toilet humor. Joe dicusses his perosnal relationships and how he destroys them, exlains how to move one's bowels with absolute stealth and includes a how-to guide for cheap skates. This is by far some of the best comic strip work out there today, but be warned, Joe Matt is R. Crumb inspired so be ready for this raw peep into Joe Matt's private life.

AN HONORABLE MAN - AN HONORABLE PROFESSION.......2004-12-09
The life of Charles Kamm personifies the lofty and ultimate goals to which every master teacher aspires. His dedication to the teaching profession as portrayed through Marcia S. Popp's THE MAN WHO BECAME A SCHOOL should serve as a measuring stick for aspiring teachers and administrators, as well as a rule book for practicing educators. Dr. Popp has epitoized Charles Kamm as Jesse Stuart's "good teacher that lives on and on through his students." Charles Kamm is the teacher who is immortal and role model for all educators.

A true resource for women in their 30s and 40s, The Perimenopause Handbook defines perimenopause, outlines what happens to the body during perimenopause, and shows the reader how to identify whether or not they are experiencing perimenopause. It includes "What You Can Do" segments that provide the important information women need to make the best treatment decisions, and advice on how to find the right doctor if symptoms become severe.
The Perimenopause Handbook also includes essential information on hormone replacement therapy and alternative treatments, pregnancy during this time, and advice on exercise and nutrition. Appendices include major resources, organizations, and hotlines concerning women's menopause/health issues. There are also a list of Websites providing perimenopause information and a bibliography of the most recent books and articles on the subject.
Customer Reviews:
This book doesn't deliver........1999-10-18
As a woman going through perimenopause, this book was sorely dissapointing. The author presented theinformation in a vague and unorganized manner and did not give the very latest information that women need to know, even though it was publised in 1998. The book, Could it be Perimenopause by Dr. Steven Goldstein is so much better.
Book Description
An important source of 19th century military history--first produced in 1883--this book encompasses the French armies that fought in the Napoleonic Wars, the Crimean War, the Mexican Expedition, the Conquest of North Africa, the Franco-Austrian and Franco-Prussian Wars, as well as the peacetime army of the late 19th century. 348 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
great book but few color illustrations.......2007-01-12
Excellent book. But make a note, that unlike original French 2-vol. set, this book includes mostly b/w illustrations (only 21 in color). All 1885-1887 French Army magnificent uniform color plates by Detaille are b/w here.
Beautiful Illustrations!.......2001-12-16
The Impressionists are the most famous French Art Movement of the late 19th Century. At about the same time, France was also producing a great school of historical painters and illustrators. Edouard Detaille in my opinion was the greatest historical painter/illustrator of the 19th Century. Do not buy L'Armee Francaise for the text. It is an English translation of stilted and heavily baroque 19th Century French. However, the illustrations are simply amazing! This is one of my favorite books.
A Valuable Reference Work.......2001-07-07
An important source of 19th century military history is the beautifully illustrated, two-volume work, L'Armée Française, produced in 1883 by the renowned military artist Edouard Detaille, with text by Jules Richard. Through his remarkably detailed and beautiful artwork, Detaille has rendered a compelling look at this most dramatic era of warfare dominated by the French art of war, military organisation and uniform styles. This classic work has been known for over a century in its French edition and is now translated into English for the first time. This lavish reprint contains the entire two-volume translation, and is richly illustrated throughout with Detaille's original published artwork depicting accurate portrayals of uniforms and military life. The book has been further embellished with an additional full-colour section displaying other works by the artist.Contains the entire translation plus over 300 illustrations from the original artwork by the military artist, and gives background information on regimental histories, army organizations, recruitment, training, battledress and equipment.L'Armée Française is the only military history book of its kind, giving background information on regimental histories, army organisations, recruitment, training, battle dress and equipment of the soldiers of France. It is a guide to the French armies that fought in the Napoleonic Wars, Crimean War, the Mexican Expedition, the Conquest of North Africa, and the Franco-Austrian and Franco-Prussian Wars, as well as a contemporary look at peacetime army in the late 19th century. No one can make a serious study of military history without becoming familiar with the wars fought by the armies of France.
An Indispensable Reference.......2000-07-02
This book is superb. Profusely illustrated by French artist Eduard Detaille, it covers the French Army from 1790-1885, describing in great detail the combat arms, staff, schools, gendarmerie, the navy, and the 'bric a brac' of the arms and services.
There are numerous tables of commanders of units and orders of battle, and the text is comprehensive; trying to keep up with its pace is like being force fed with a firehose. Quite simply, it gives an amazing amount of detail is what is actually quite a small space. There are both color and black and white illustrations, and they definitely have the look and feel of the 'smell of gunpowder.' Detaille was one of the best military artists of all time, and this book shows of his work perfectly.
Having seen the original volumes in French, this translation and edition have lost nothing in the trasition. The detail and minutiae are amazing, from the formation of the not-properly-sanctioned 15th Cuirassier Regiment in Hamburg by Marshal Davout in 1813 to the conquest of Algeria, this volume has much information that was not available before in English. It is a definite must for the military historian.
Much of the book is about the French Armies of the Revolution and Napoleon's Grande Armee, which is fine with me, as it is my favorite period. You can ride once again with the cavalry of the Empire, work those terrible guns of the Imperial Guard that tore allied armies to pieces, or sweat in the ranks with the infantry of the line (infanterie du ligne) as they go on just one more forced march into the thunderous hell that was combat in the Napoleonic period.
Highly recommended and you won't be disappointed.
A Treasured Volume.......1999-10-15
This is one of my favorite books in my Library. It is a feast for the eyes, laying out sketches and illustrations that are unmatched anywhere else.
As a Professional Army Officer and historian, this book also lays out, in detail, the very essence of the French Army during these times.
This book runs the gauntlet from being a coffee table book, to a real resource for true military historians.

French Translation of "Dawn After Dark" by Huyghe and Ikeda.......2000-05-28
This book, "La nuit appelle l'aurore" is the French translation of "Dawn After Dark." It is a discussion between the acclaimed French art critic, writer and expert on French painting, René Huyghe, a member of the Académie Français, and a Japanese religious leader, Daisaku Ikeda. The dialogue aims at gaining an overall perspective on humankind's current predicaments and the reforms needed to move forward and avert disaster.
To paraphrase Huyghe's introduction, never before has humanity had to face problems on so vast a scale as those confronting us today. Until recent times, human groups had no interest in knowing anything but their own needs, customs and beliefs. Rejecting or ignoring the beliefs of others, they attempted to enforce their own set of values wherever they went.
Today, a more universal awareness is emerging. Humanity has come to realize that it is essential to examine the characteristics, causes and effects of current problems and to establish reforms to avert them. In this volume, Huyghe and Ikeda bring together and compare ways of thought from opposite sides of the world. Through an objective comparison of traditions, cultures, and religions from the East and the West, they provide us with a global view of the crisis at hand.
Their discussion is divided into five parts. In the first, the nature of the dilemma we confront is exposed and shown to be first and foremost a moral crisis. The second part points to the historical roots of the crisis, and the third investigates the changes that humanity is undergoing, the social tasks before us and what is needed from within ourselves to build a new kind of society.
The fourth part turns to solutions to the predicament--the key to harmony in life and the means to reform the inner lives of human beings. Part five discusses the major resources that are uniquely human--art and religion, which are linked by a sense of the sacred.
With their distinct but complementary viewpoints, Huyghe and Ikeda take different paths that finally converge to illuminate the increasingly complex world we live in with clarity and optimism.
Book Description
Now fully updated and revised, the new Fourth Edition of Cell and Molecular Biology not only offers you and your students all of the latest research, it also gives students the tools they need to understand the science behind cell biology and ultimately succeed in your course. This text is ideal for sophomore/junior-level courses in cell biology offered out of biology or molecular and cell biology departments.
Cell and Molecular Biology provides an alternative for faculty looking for a text that concentrates on core concepts without sacrificing coverage of experimental evidence. Karp explores core concepts in considerable depth, and presents experimental detail when it helps to explain and reinforce the concept being explained. This edition also continues to offer an exceedingly clear presentation and excellent art program, both of which have received high praise in prior editions.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent introductory book.......2007-07-19
I've come to appreciate this book more and more over its succeeding editions. It has now replaced both the Alberts et al. and the Lodish et al. books (both nevertheless excellent) as my favorite textbook on cell and molecular biology.
It is concise, covers a very large range of subjects and has very clear graphics. I think it is better balanced than many of its competitors in the sense that the reader never gets the impression that the author sacrificed certain subjects to give more room to his favorite ones. On many occasions, I was surprised to find things in here that I couldn't find in the bigger (and more "fundamental") Alberts and Lodish.
It references papers and review articles that are very current, and is very up to date on its content.
I think Gerald Karp is doing a very good job with each new iteration of this book and I will recommend it to my students.
Excellent book!!.......2006-01-09
This is one of the most complete and easy-to-read book ever! I have studied with Gerald Karp books since I was an undergraduate student (Biochemistry, and Karp book was always by my side, very useful). This book explain the cellular metabolism, structures (cytoskeleton, microtubules, filaments, genes, relations between genes and proteins, DNA repair, cell cycle, cell signalling, lot of concepts that are not easy to understand at first, Karp does it very simple. You will love this book. I can strongly recommend it. Another excellent book I can recommend is Molecular Biology of the CELL by Bruce Alberts....is excellent! and before you take an exam, I will suggest the "Outline of Molecular and Cell Biology" by the Schaum's series. Well, that's it for now, I wish you the best in your career (I have been there, I know how hard it can be and choose the proper books!) and always remember, keep working and practicing, because practice make the Master!! :)

Laura Fazio

Great job.......2005-09-26
The book was in great condition. Seller let me know that the book was in the mail which was nice.
Concise story of cell biology.......2002-01-04
Another introductory book in the biology of the cell. I would say that the book is divided into mainly two sections, Cell structure and DANA, DANA replications etc. Second part takes almost two thirds of the book. I would prefer to read other Gene books when it comes to that point but for the cell structure, it is not bad. Some colored pictures, computer animations makes it easy to visualize things. Sections called "experimental pathways" scattered throughout the text takes you into current issues related to the subject. They are also quite sophisticated issues rather than practical problems. I think this book requires considerable guidance when read alone. I could not call this book as self sufficient or easy to read one compared to books by Alberts or Baltimore.
He's got it all here in a nutshell.......2000-12-07
All biology, biochemistry, and premed students will find this text an indispensible source of information for anything there is to know about cells. This is one text that can't possibly be read and fully understood overnight; just take a little bit at a time at any convenient moment and it will all come together in your mind before you know it!
