Book Description

Anyone who yearns for an older home - but is daunted by the prospect of owning one — will love this book. Through hundreds of inspiring photographs and engaging text, the author describes what gives traditional homes their enduring appeal. Versaci identifies Eight Pillars of Traditional Design that create a solid foundation for combining authentic, traditional design with livability to create homes that feel old yet live new. Featuring a vast array of new, old-house styles — from colonials to farmhouses — from all over the country, the houses illustrate the creative work of architects, builders, and craftsmen who are forging the movement toward building new homes that capture an old-home sensibility.

3 out of 5 stars back in time.......2007-07-14

This book was very interesting to look at. The pictures were great if you like old style homes. The title is deceiving. I was looking for a more modern looking style but this book is still a looker but if you're looking to modernize an old home, I would recommend Colonials: Design Ideas for Renovating, Remodeling, and Building New (Updating Classic America) by Matthew Schoenherr.

5 out of 5 stars Pulled into the Pages.......2007-04-12

When you open this book expect not only to view, but become alive in the pages! This book is so full of true "old" techniques, patterns, shapes, forms, and use of the home.
Beautiful, quality pictures to make you feel as if you are right there in each room. Much to gather visually and use for your own home.

3 out of 5 stars Nice but not what I expected........2007-03-23

It's a nice book if you are expecting a general overview of renovated houses,
one in each of several architectural types. I had expected more detail about renovating any style of old house.

3 out of 5 stars Old fashioned style and house plans.......2007-02-18

Many of the photos are beautiful but I was a bit disapointed with this book. It is from the publishers of the Not So Big House books and I was hoping for modern house plans with older style details. Actually many of the house plans in this book look very dated to me with separate living and dining rooms and a difficult path to the kitchens. There also seemed to be more emphasis on the appearance of the outside of the houses than the interiors. This may be a good place to start if you are planning to build in a traditional style and floor plan but I prefer the Not So Big books.

4 out of 5 stars Creating a New Old House-Traditional Architect Review.......2007-01-03

As an Architect, I have always had an appreciation of old buildings, and the creation of new ones that have the feeling that they have always been there. This book, by Russell Versaci has a wonderful composition of different homes, each encompassing this same ideology, but in different styles from around our great country. I think that this, pictorally, is a wonderful example of how one can make a new home feel as if it has always been a part of its place. But I must say, parts of the text are somewhat dry and repetitive...but other than that, I'd definitely buy this book.

This trade seems to be flooded with newcomers, and there's a number of authors that are taking advantage of them with publications of all kinds that are high on promise, yet weak on content. This book is NOT one of them. Profiling the techniques and personal philosophies of the trade's top photographers, it offers the Zen of great wedding photography. Inspiring, educating and one of the best stimulators to the creative mind available on the subject today. This is a top notch book with much to offer, even to the experienced professional. A refreshing change, and truly a high-dividend investment to any wedding photographer, regardless of experience level.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book, especially for someone who has never done weddings or done only a few........2007-03-03

This book has good layout and detail of the photos included. Even though most of the pictures were taken with Nikon cameras, the subject doesn't change, it's still based on shooting weddings.

It starts with the pre-wedding planning and finishes with the album and it's design. (As most of the wedding photography books are) It's a fast read and has some good photos to learn from.

If you were an assistant to a photographer, you probably know more than this book covers, but it's a great start for anyone who's just begining.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for the pictures!.......2007-01-30

I really loved this book and read it avidly from cover to cover. However I found it pretty light on "technique" To my mind statements such as "it is a good idea to have a selection of white, silver, gold, and black reflectors" or "as your groups get bigger keep your depth of field under control" are a little broad and far too basic to be "technique"...I guess I expected something a bit more technical, though as I write this it seems overly picky. Never mind, it made up for that with the beautiful images, and it was a very interesting read, but it was more of a what you could do than a how to, if you get my meaning. I mean if you don't know which depth of field you should use in a group you probably shouldn't be photographing someones wedding!!

But again it gets top marks for looking at the unstaged philosophy of wedding photojournalism and backing that up with beautiful appropriate images.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifullyi llustrated by some very good photographers.......2003-05-28

I have mixed emotions about this book. The book is beautifully illustrated by some of the leaders in the wedding field. The tone of the book, though, is often gushingly sentimental, which may be the state of wedding photography today (Try out a fuzzy picture of a bride daydreaming over her SHOES). Still, Hurter tries to present a balanced picture of wedding photographer as it is today - discussing traditional vs. photojournalism approaches and their pros and cons.
The pictures are well-worth seeing, but if Hurter's style turns you off, you might be more rewarded by Steve Sint's "Weddding Photography: Art, Business and Style,'' which also is beautifully illustrated but more down to earth, practical and objective. Better still, read them both and find a balance somewhere in the middle.

5 out of 5 stars An Elegant Primer on Wedding Photography.......2003-04-14

Unlike many how-to photography books of this genre, The Best of Wedding Photography is a very beautiful book filled luscious wedding photographs. The photographers selected are from well-known wedding photographers in the field. For the photographs alone, you will want to go back to this book again and again. It is also wonderful handbook on photographic tips and techniques from the masters in the field. Great advice on portraits, groups, lighting, various approaches and albums. All these topics are illustrated with lavish pictures. It is a wonderful primer for anyone starting out in the business.

Volume 5 of Checker's landmark collection of McCay's output other than Little Nemo in Slumeberland. Includes late 1908 strip work and editorial cartoons from the New York American.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Quality low, but content interesting.......2006-02-18

Like the other reviewers here, I found the reproduction quality of this volume to be quite deplorable. The Rarebit strips and Pilgrim's Progress are particularly bad (and Rarebit is my prime motivation for picking these up).

On the plus side, there is a good 40 pages of "dream" strips that (presumably) precede Rarebit and, while they are perhaps less fantastic on average than Rarebit, they are very intriguing. These strips are very like Rarebit, but without the 'toasted cheese' premise - they have titles such as Day Dreams and Dreams of A Lobster Fiend(!) and follow roughly the same formula.

This volume also contains about 70 pages of editorial cartoons in McCay's grand style, most of them pretty well reproduced (though size is still an issue).

There is also a selection of other comic strip work, but most of these are of little interest compared with the other works here reproduced.

Hopefully Checker will get their act together with subsequent volumes and improve the quality of reproduction (ironically, the notes to one of the volumes mention "digital restoration" of the images, but clearly that wasn't happening here).

It should be noted, too, that notes in these volumes are sketchy and uninformative (perhaps MIS-informative). No dates are given except in the most general way.

All-in-all I'm not thrilled with these volumes, but I enjoy McCay's work enough to feel glad i got them. Still the lack of quality is galling. Caveat Emptor!!

Someone really should collect all the Dream strips into one volume (or series) and include some color.

      1 out of 5 stars Awful reproductions.......2005-08-12

I was really looking forward to receiving these (I ordered all five issues in one go) but what a terrible disappointment when they arrived today. The reproductions are atrocious. Not just minuscule- you actually need a magnifying glass to read some pages - but (old and dysfunctional) photocopy quality. I am going to give all five away if I can find someone interested, I do not wish to keep those in my library. From now on I am buying *only* Fantagraphic reeditions. Nocomparison between the fantastic Krazy Kat reissues and poor Mccay's earlies in this series.

      2 out of 5 stars Terrible reproductions........2005-06-16

I am a big fan of Winsor McCay and I have purchased all five volumes of this series that have been issued so far. It's nice to see such a big variety of the early work in print but I am afraid that some of the reproductions are atrocious. Some of the "Pilgrim's Progress" and "Dream of the Rarebit Fiend" strips appear to be third or fourth generation photocopies. I realize that not all of these strips are easy to find in decent condition but I have seen many of them in other books in far clearer reproduction. I would rather they had left the strips out then print these murky copies. I'm sorry: I really wanted to like this series but they seem to be getting worse as further volumes are issued.

In 1996, Dr. Edwards was featured on the Sally Jessy Raphael Show for making a significant difference in a former student's life that was born with a physical disability, Nancy Johnson Miller. At the time of their initial meeting, Dr. Edwards was a first-year Physical Education teacher at the school where Ms. Miller was a 5th grade student. According to Ms. Miller, Dr. Edwards was instrumental in enabling her to move past her diability by accepting it and by being confident in using and/ or developing the talents that God did give her.
As a result of hearing about his impact on this student's life, Dr. Edwards wrote this book. Since then the two have created the Edwards-Miller Foundation for Physical Disabilities, Inc, to provide scholarships for physically challenged individuals to pursue a college education.

"My mom gave a couple of dollars to a woman who was in desperate need of milk for her family. In return, the woman gave my mom a gunnysack full of things, including a pair of skates. My sister Edna grabbed one and I got the other. We went outside and push-glided around an ice pond. When Edna got cold and took her skate off, I put it on my other foot." So begins the story of one of the greatest--and toughest--men to ever play the game of ice hockey, Gordie Howe. Or try Bobby Hull: "We won the Stanley Cup in 1961 when I was 22 years old... but I never did drink out of the Stanley Cup. As the festivities began, I started drinking beer out of the owner's son Mike Wirtz's dirty old felt hat. I got sick as a dog and had to go to bed instead of celebrating that night."

For the Love of Hockey collects the personal stories of 91 of the game's greatest players, stars such as Rocket Richard, Bobby Orr, Guy Lafleur, Wayne Gretzky, and Mario Lemieux. With big, full-color action shots and the words of the players themselves, this is a heartfelt tribute to the most talented practitioners of a fast and furious sport.

1 out of 5 stars Skip this book and just buy Baby Bargains.......2007-10-15

This book was a major disappointment. I spent about 30 minutes flipping through it looking for some solid product reviews, but it really missed the mark. I just wanted to know how certain things rated, like strollers and car seats, and the book just skimmed over those topics. Skip this book and just buy Baby Bargains... I wish I had saved my money.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for.......2007-10-11

Grrr... so I am an avid Consumer Reports reader and seeing as I am pregnant w/ baby number 2, I decided to renew my consumer reports online account to see ratings for the latest baby items. Sadly, not much there and instead they refer you to buying this book. So, I go buy the book. I am definitely not happy. As most of the other reviews on here state, there are barely any actual reviews which is what I expect from consumer reports. It's mostly just a bunch of advice and general overviews of different "types" of products without the actual ratings of "specific products". This all might be useful to first time parents but not to someone who's already well aware of the basics. I SO wish I had come here to read the reviews on this book first but sadly, I trusted consumer reports to deliver on what they do best- ratings. What a bummer.

5 out of 5 stars MUST have for a first time mom or any mom.......2007-09-08

No this book doesn't tell you to go out and buy this specific stroller or crib or car seat but it does review what things to check for while you are looking. There are just way too many choices out there for them to pick one (or a couple) item from each category and tell everyone to buy that item. What works for one person may not for another. I found this book very helpful. I'm going to be a first time mom in 3 months and every time I walk through the baby aisles in the stores (or online) looking at baby supplies my head would spin from the variety and quantity of products out there. How on earth can people choose! Of course we all want what is best for our babies! I go to consumer reports when I want to make a major purchase so when I found out they published a book on all their baby products I was relieved. Nothing is more important to me than having safe, reliable products for my baby. I am so glad I got it. The book reviews everything from cribs to car seats to pacifiers and bottles, bathtubs and beyond. It also discusses what NOT to get (i.e. some products that have not been deemed safe) which is equally important. I will be going to register for my shower with this book in my hand. There is a baby basics checklist in the beginning on which I have been taking notes as I read (and sometimes re-read) this book. It will make the registering a much easier process. I am buying this book for all my friends who are pregnant! Good luck to all the new moms and dads!

4 out of 5 stars Good for first time parents.......2007-08-23

This book contains a lot of information on types of products. It goes through what you need and what will make life easier. It also details features on items that are both plus and minuses and what to look for when buying certain items but it often stops short of recommending a particular brand over another. I was a little surprised that it did not contain as many detailed brand vs. brand. There are some. I just expected more.

So if you are a first time parent and you need a little help as far as what to look for and what to look out for this will be helpful. If you are already a parent and are looking for brand recommendations skip purchasing this book.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money!.......2007-08-20

Honestly? Save your money and buy a subscription to consumer reports online for $25/year. I didn't see much at all in this book that wasn't already available online through consumer reports.

      1 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2007-07-08

Having been a CR subscriber for years now, they were the first I turned to on recommendations for gear for our first baby. In the store, I never even bothered to open the book and look at it because I trusted that if it was written by CR, it had to be quality. When I got home and started leafing through it, I found that MANY sections had no recommendations at all. They simply listed different manufacturers of the products. This was not helpful information--I could've found this on any store's website. I highly recommend taking a look at Baby Bargains, by Denise & Alan Fields, instead. It is jam-packed with great information and is updated frequently to stay current. It has been infinitely more useful than this book.

      1 out of 5 stars DON"T BUY IT!.......2007-05-08

Buy 'Baby Bargins' instead!!!! I looked at this book at Barnes and Nobel, but didn't buy it. Only a few products were reviewed.....and the reviews weren't very good. Also, only a few categories were reviewed. The baby bargins book has detailed reviews on all brands in several categories.

      5 out of 5 stars Incomplete Guide.......2007-03-31

Regular readers of Consumer Reports will be disappointed in this list of products. It doesn't put baby products to the test.

2 out of 5 stars Not much to report ..........2007-01-13

I was disappointed. The book provides a lot of information on "how to buy" (buying guides), but little information on "WHAT to buy" (recommended brands). Most items are NOT actually tested/reviewed ... the book merely provides a list of brands available - which I could get by walking into any baby store. Hoping 9th Edition is more complete.

      4 out of 5 stars I enjoyed it!.......2004-01-17

I purchased an older copy of this book at the half-price store and found it to be incredibly useful. I didn't buy it for the ratings - there's no way a print book could keep up with the changing products - but for the suggestions of what to look for in a quality product, what to watch out for, things to think about, and even whether a particular type of product is even worth bothering about.

I loved it, and found Baby Bargains to be disappointing.

      1 out of 5 stars New Mom-to-be.......2003-07-31

Not impressed at all. If you are the type of person who thoroughly researches things before you buy them, you will probably know just about everything that is in this Consumer Reports book (yes I am a first time mom-to-be). Don't let the first 10 chapters fool you not a single product is actually rated. I was especially disappointed to find that a meager 10 pages in the back of the book were actually dedicated to rating products which is really what you want from Consumer Reports. If you are looking for comprehensive ratings don't buy this book!! The only things rated are: Car Seats, Boosters, travel systems, play yards and soft carriers all in a meager 10 pages so that should give you an idea that this book barely scratches the surface of rating baby products.

If you want a book really worth the money buy "Baby Bargains" by Denise & Alan Fields. It is more comprehensive in the comparisons and ratings and even compares their results to Consumer Reports. "Baby Bargains" is worth every penny.

Consumer Reports baby book left me feeling like a new mom swindled into yet another worthless baby book!!

      1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2003-01-07

This book was not informative at all. I started to read the reviews after I bought the book just to make sure I was not the only one who was not impressed with the book. I took the suggestion of other readers and bought Baby Bargain. Now this is a wonderful book. I can't put it down, originally when I bought I was planning to just skim though and read what I thought was important but the advice was so good that I had to start reading the book from the beginning to make sure I wasn't missing out on any good tips.

1 out of 5 stars No RATINGS == Useless Book.......2002-12-01

The only reason I wanted this book to see the comparison for safety of car seats, strollers, play pens, etc. Instead, what I found was a shopping list of infinite length, and almost no ratings. Only 5 car seats were rated, 2 of which are no longer made. This, after at least 15 styles of car seats were discussed as "potential options" in the body of the book. I am very disappointed, and plan on returning this book. Don't bother with it... you can find the shopping lists that the book provides at Amazon.com's lists, and this adds no value at all.

      2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2002-11-14

This book did not give the info promised. It does not rate each product. Only gives a review of what something is. I was very disappointed with this book & do not recommend. Go get Baby bargains. It's been my bible!!

The three-dimensional camouflage of the famed ghillie suit is unparalleled in its ability to conceal the outdoorsman. But preassembled suits are expensive, and kits can be both costly and time-consuming. Tom Forbes, author of the best-selling PVC Projects for the Outdoorsman book and The Invisible Advantage video, has come up with an alternative. Using simple procedures and economical, easily found materials, Forbes guides readers through the manufacture of several different kinds of ghillie suit, including the garment used by the British military during World War II. This handy workbook contains tips on materials and techniques used in ghillie suit construction, as well as valuable information on stalking methods.

2 out of 5 stars Review on Invisible advantage.......2007-08-06

I was suprised at how small this book was. The only color pictures are on the front and back of the book. The book talks about different styles, and history. However there are actually very little of the working details that one would actually need if they were building a suit using this workbook. The books lists materials one would need to build a suit, which is great, but there are very little other details one would need.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book to someone who is planning on building their own suit.

3 out of 5 stars A bare bones guide, pricey for what you get.......2002-12-29

Barely 70 pages total, this book consists of a number of not always clear photos, a few diagrams, some history and some info on how to make yourself a suit with a few tips on using it. Paladin Press books are always a little pricey for what you get, at least Amazon gives a good deal.
I found that the author seems to favor adapting BDU's (military uniform shirts & pants)and poncho's by sewing a variety of materials onto them. He gives some instruction and tips on that as well as suggested lists of materials. I guess this little book is all right but I'd like it to have been about twice as long with more information on making suits and a LOT more on using them.

              Book Description

By the 12th century, European literature was rich with tales of a procession carrying a group of objects closely tied to the Passion of Christ—the Holy Grail, the lance that pierced Christ's side, the sword used to behead John the Baptist, and a dish from the Last Supper. While legends of the quest for the Holy Grail continue to grip the popular imagination, the other relics, once closely associated with the Grail legends, receive little mention. Still, the overlooked Grail Hallows, as they are called, have a rich symbolic history, winding through the ages—and leading in some surprising directions.

This exploration of the forgotten relics of the Grail Procession examines the body of evidence hinting at their authenticity, and traces their history as symbols, from the early days of Christianity, to Celtic mythology, to "the foggy wastelands inhabited by history's outcasts," to the suits of the modern tarot. The oral histories and a possible sourcebook that informed the earliest known stories are discussed. Illustrations and photographs of relevant locations and objects, including the cards of the tarot, further illuminate the story. An appendix gives a timeline of the Hallows' history, and there is a bibliography and an index.
