A new take on the Northwest vernacular.......2005-10-14
James Cutler makes his home on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle, where he is able to carry out his work in relative privacy . This monograph is the second to exhibit the work he has become famous for - a bare bones Northwest vernacular that owes as much to his Pennsylvania roots as it does to the Pacific Northwest. It is readily apparent that Cutler studied under Louis Kahn in the exacting details he demands in all his projects. He now has the luxury to pick and choose his clients which have include Bill Gates. You get a small glimpse of the Gates estate in the Entry Turnaround in Medina, Washington. He and Peter Bohlin worked on the project together, setting up a sawmill on the site to cut the recycled timber to their specifications. As Cutler once said, I never look at the same detail twice, re-examining the methods and materials of construction anew in each project he undertakes.
With the introduction of Bruce Anderson to the firm, he has begun to investigate pre-fabricated housing in the form of the Lindal Cedar Home, but you can see that it is the unique individual homes which he relishes. He experimented with rammed-earth construction in the Residence at Meteor Vineyards in Napa Valley, creating a unique marbled finish; but it is projects like the Schmidt Residence that bear his signature in the intricate woodwork and metal connections. This book provides you with a short but thorough look into several of the projects, illustrating that James Cutler is one of the leading architects of his generation.

April Gornik has quietly been practicing her art for many years, never distracted by trends or politico-social climes. She just creates landscapes of extraordinary simplicity and beauty. Whether focusing on a single tree or a glance at a minute detail of nature or a panoramic view of the vastness of landscape that begins and ends only where the eye dictates, Gornik intuitively understands the grand life cycle and the secrets and miracles of the land. She is an enormously accomplished artist.
In this fine monograph, to my knowledge the first major book beyond museum small catalogues to explore Gornik's gifts, the fine contributions by renowned art historian and commentator Donald Kuspit embellish the generous number of full color illustrations. Gornik's own intensely personal views are warmly related in an interview with Dede Young, a curator at Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York.
But as always with fine art the emphasis is on the visual and this book offers some of the more beautifully rendered reproductions of Gornik's paintings ever published. This fabulous collction of virtually every one of the most vital contemporary artist is, simply put, a must. The talent and diversity of these works are astounding and envigorating. The title "Drawing" conjures up images of simple sketches, pencil works and other trite mediums of drawing. However, these works prove that drawing, the element of art that is the product of the artist's mind directly onto a surface, is fulfilled in every way. Works like "Detail from Cremaster 3" by Matthew Barney and other works by Ellsworth Kelly, Sol Lewitt, Anish Kapoor, Lari Pittman, Charles Ray and many others make this mini-volume a treasure worth investigating.

disappointing.......2007-02-07
i was very disappointed in this book. i have been using digital for years now and my landscapes are turning out very good, however, my snapshots of kids and everyday events don't turn out so good. i thought i had finally found a book to help with this. however, the author spends so much time covering camera basics and fixing photos in photoshop. why does every camera "how to" book do this? i wish they would just stick to the subject. however, even the couple of chapters that were devoted to actually photographing your kids was not very helpful. she covered the rules of thirds, and a few lighting tips. that's about it. i was very disappointed in the material, and for the price, it just isn't worth it.

The author knows that professional portraiture involves many different things, from proper attire to posing, to lighting, and marketing. This book covers all the bases. If you're looking for a comprehensive introduction to portraiture of families, this book has what you need.

Kathleen Hawkins have created a great textbook for professional photographers in the children and family market. Kathleen's marketing ideas alone are worth twice what the book costs. It is definetly worthwhile.

My disappointment is that the book is geared for the photographer who is still using film (who are they?). It is helpful to those who have not made the transition yet but is redundant to those who have already been using digital and Photoshop. The upside: The photos are lovely, and the packaging and album layouts are great too.

Lessons from the Porch is a must read for anyone searching for meaning and wholeness in their life. Lessons will encourage and enable you to begin a healthy, life changing, and most likely long overdue journey towards peace, understanding and wholeness in your life. The author's effective use of the art of storytelling causes the 22 lessons contained within to come alive, encourages self-reflection and ultimately sets you on the path towards finding the true meaning in your life.
Lessons encouraged me to stop and examine the "me" I had become -how the past, the present and the relationships throughout my life had molded me. Lessons compelled me to enter the depths of my heart and soul, to begin a self-examination, and to allow the "me" that was inside, screaming to get out, begin to surface.
The person I am today evolved as a result of the influences of both my roots and experiences. Lessons from the Porch encouraged me to reflect and celebrate many of those experiences. Effective insight into the smaller stories of the war.......2006-09-02
Stern's book caters to all readers, regardless if interested in the Civil War. The author recounts the main actions of each year of the war before delving into some unique stories. As a reviewer mentions, the book attests to many naval escapades. Of the 24 stories recounted, nine deal with naval events. Others revolve around female spying, cavalry raids, explosives, the attempts by the South to burn New York City, prison escapes, and the Draft Riots. All stories are interesting, but since these are first hand accounts, there is the exaggeration, embellishment, and arrogance associated with the desire to make one's contribution to the war much more than what it really was. Case in point is the story on Belle Boyd, the southern belle who believed that her intelligence spying contributed to Stonewall Jackson's victory at Front Royal. Well, that really wasn't the case, though her account makes it seem to be case. Anyone can locate documentation countering either side of this story, though more of it leans toward dispelling any real contribution on her part. Nevertheless, to read the first-person account helps immerse one into the 19th century and makes for a fascinating read.
Any casual reader can appreciate this book and read it within one or two days. If one is interested in a more in depth analysis of intelligence activities, take a look at Edwin Fishel's "The Secret War for the Union," a massive and impressive 594-page treatment on the subject.
From Spy's to Confederate Submarines-SECRET MISSIONS- will have you spellbound!.......2006-07-04
"on February 17, 1863, a Federal gunboat, The Queen of the West, was captured by the Confederates after having been run aground-on purpose , it was said- by a local pilot. A week later the newest Union ironclad on the river (Mississippi), the Indianola was sunk in shallow water by enemy action (Vicksburg cannon). This ship, a floating fortess 170 feet long and 60 feet wide, had two enormous 11-inch Dahlgren rifled cannon and a battery of 24-pounders. She was cumbersome, awkward, and ugly, and at the moment was resting on the bottom with her decks awash in a part of the river held by the Confederates. Her enormously valuable guns were anybody's for the taking--and both sides wanted them badly."
Admiral David Dixon Porter was desperate to get the guns before the Conferates were able to salvage them. You will have to read the book to find out what happened :)
This is just one of the wonderful true stories collected by Philip Van Doren Stern of first hand accounts he has 'woven into a continuous narrative'.

More Naval than secret.......2005-09-21
This was an interesting little book, containing many not so well known parts of the Civil war. I wouldn't consider it to be quite correctly titled however. The stories were not so much about secret missions as they were, little piece of the struggle that makes up war. This book mostly covers naval history, and in this being an underreported part of the war make for good and different reading. You should be warned however, as most of the information included in this book is from first hand accounts, the accuracy is sometimes sketchy. I know for instance that the store about the raid on St Albans,VT contain many errors, including town names. Still I would strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Civil War, and it's lesser known battles.

Secret Missions of the Civil War was a very good book. I did not expect it to be anywhere near how good it actually was. It was very interesting and entertaining. The fact that the book is actually comprised of quite a few short stories on different secret missions makes it all the more interesting. The book never had a chance to get boring because the stories were constantly changing. There were many things I found out about in this book that I never knew about at all. Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone at all interested in the Civil War. It is entertaining, yet you can still learn something from it.
