Book Description
Design for Life: The Architecture of Sim Van der Ryn surveys the work and principles of Sim Van der Ryn, a world leader in the field of sustainable architecture. Sharing his years of experience as a teacher and using his building designs as examples, the author shows us that buildings are not objects but organisms, and cities are not machines but complex ecosystems.

How Buildings Need to be Built.......2006-01-12
The small town I live in is going through a boom period. There are new housing developments all over and in all price ranges. And the houses really suck. From little boxes at the low price end to McMansions at the high end, there is absolutely no originality, no thought of energy or water conservation. (I live in a desert climate, all of these houses have thick lucious grass lawns that have to be watered every day.)
I'm thinking of a new house, smaller, since the kids are gone, but with some special features for my hobbies. It is really refreshing to see a book like this one that takes into account what can be done. The book is sort of a cross between an autobiography and an idea book. The autobiographical emphasis is on how events in his life shaped the ideas he has transposed into buildings.
I don't aee any of the buildings described in the book as being exactly what I want, but I see lots of parts of various buildings that when combined together come pretty close. All in all, I found more of what I wanted in this book than in any other idea book I've seen.
Glimpse into the Heart of a Green Crusader.......2005-11-23
Anyone who has a true desire to understand the essence of green building and sustainable architecture simply must have Sim Van der Ryn's new book "Design for Life." It is a poetic response to a market hungry to understand authentic ecological design and sensitive building practices. "Design for Life" is a treasury that catalogs the life, architecture, and philosophy of Sim Van der Ryn, a pioneering ecological architect. This book is a delightful piece of writing by Sim Van der Ryn and is to be experienced, not just read.
Sim Van der Ryn buries this jewel in the text on page 127: "The heart of ecological design is not efficiency or sustainability. It is the embodiment of the animating spirit, the soul of the living world as embodied in each of us waiting to be reborn and expressed in what we design."
"Design for Life" chronicles Sim's childhood inspirations after World War II, the trials and successes at Berkeley in the 1960's, his experiments in sustainable home construction and self-supporting communities, and his environmentally responsive style of architecture. Woven throughout the 175 pages are poignant stories, watercolors illustrating thought processes, and 200 rich color photos.
Sim is the real deal, he is an architect even a builder could love. He lived it, breathed it; designed it, built it, improved it, and analyzed it. His stories convey a deep sense of reverence for building structures with meaning. The book will float you down a lazy river through a kaleidoscope of experiences that leave you in awe of the pioneering efforts of one individual with vision and a dedication to be true to himself. He did not intentionally create the new genre of green architecture. A universal intelligence flowed through Sim and his architecture was the fruits.
Sim Van der Ryn is best known for a spectacular rammed earth guitar house and the ever-impressive Real Goods corporate headquarters. He also co-authored a landmark book with Peter Calthorpe in 1986, "Sustainable Communities," a book that was early to recognize the intelligence of planned villages.

Choices.......2007-08-23
I really enjoyed Curbside Boys. Besides all the awesome music references ("I wish I'd taken pictures..."), the story was truly heartfelt. I loved Drew's progression. He still had a lot of insecurities, but he still grew so much by the end. I particularly loved the panel where Drew decided to work out. I have friends who like to joke that any gym membership is supporting "body facism." But Drew didn't become a muscle queen, he just decided to take concrete steps at addressing his low self-esteem.
On a personal note, I really appreciated the fact that Curbside Boys had people of color as main characters AND as random love interests. It was clear they weren't just tokens. Kevin was just uptight, pragmatic, stable Kevin. Not "the black roommate." Curbside Boys was definitely money well spent!
Love These Boys.......2007-08-06
I've been a Curbside fan for years. The strip has a sweet worldliness and wry, askance view of gay city life that has always been a refreshing counterpoint to the bad puns and pseudoporn of other gay comics. It's a warm, funny, realistic, perspective I've always admired. It's funny, realistic, and grown-up; If you find that "depressing," well I guess there are other happy endings out there you could read.
Terrible.......2007-02-06
Way too much text per frame, so much that the artwork is overwhelmed. Which is probably a good thing, since the artwork is horrible, amateurish, the kind of doodling you would see from a young boy with an interest in art but no training. The most important problem is that the strip is not in the least funny. Most of the strips are depressing; the "gags" evoke sadness, even despair. I can't tell if the author is trying to depress his readers for some crazy reason, or if he thinks he's being funny. Either way, he should take a look at some of the best gay comics.
One of the best graphic novels there is, very touching.............2002-12-17
When I got "Curbside Boys" in the mail, I spent the entire evening reading it, forward and backward, every page, and I still can't get enough of it. I have been a fan of "Curbside" since I was in college and no other comic strip comes close to capturing the pathos and "bittersweetness" of the characters as "Curbside" does. You (as the reader) are able to connect with the characters on a more personal level, sympathize with them (such as Drew's mourning of his deceased professor/lover), get annoyed with their calculating antics (eg. Nathan's fear of commitment), but love them at the end, faults and all. It's too bad that Rob only had a few cameos (unlike the first "Curbside," in which he and his husband Tony were the protagonists), and since I'm a woman I wished there were more female characters besides the occasional lesbian and Nathan's mother. Otherwise, I would say that EVERYONE should read this book (unless you are only into (and/or only allowed to read) G-rated material- some of the strips are rather "raunchy"), laugh and cry along with, and cheer for the characters. Thanks Rob!
Thrilling Gay Relationship Comic Strips.......2002-11-20
Robert Kirby's "Curbside Boys" is an enjoyable romantic melodrama largely following the life of Nathan, a handsome 20-something guy in New York City.
Nathan, introduced in Kirby's previous collection, "Curbside", has just moved from Minneapolis to Manhattan. Nathan finds work in a coffee shop and shares an apartment with two new characters, Kevin and Drew. Kevin has an on-and-off relationship with boyfriend Rain. Drew is a young, inhibited writer-wannabe who keeps a nervous eye on Nathan. Bob, an important character in "Curbside" makes an appearance as a confidante to Nathan. While Nathan and the others cruise about, stirring up action, the real drama is the growth of emotional bonds between the main characters.
While it isn't necessary to read "Curbside" first, people who like "Curbside Boys" will want to check it out.
Kirby captures the relationship-based hopes and fears of the young, urban, gay community.
I look forward to the sequel!

Book Description
For two centuries the works of Jean-Jacques Rousseau have been read and reread and perpetually annotated. Rousseau's ideas on education were so original when first published in 1762 that they still have claims to novelty. In the cause of education he has been a great inciter of ideas in others, the initiator of the modern movement, the "leader" of most of the educators who came after him. Gabriel Compayré is the author of History of Pedagogy, Montaigne and the Education of the Judgment, Peter Abelard and the Rise of the Modern Universities and Jean Frederich Herbart and Education by Instruction.

Oldtimers score big.......2004-06-22
Although there is a tad too much about Brewitt's realtionship to some of these NHL oldtimers, I just loved the tales told. Rene Robert calling Scotty Bowman a "platehead" and Robert tossing a hat-trick puck at the Mtl bench was a classic howler. As was Butch Goring and the hot dog incident which is as funny as that wreck of a helmet he used to wear. There are so many but it was nice to see stories on Bill White and Fats Delvecchio--two of the more underrated stars of the past.
Customer Reviews:
A good book.......2005-06-12
This is a good book, and few exist on the subject. A short easy, consice, and pleasent read not full of polemics or bias. It covers the main actors involved, the struggle and the outcome. The Lebanese Civil war began in 1976 with the attempted assasination of Pierre Gemayel, a Lebanese Christian leader. In retaliation a cycle of violence broke out originally between Phalange militias and PLO elements, widening into a costly wider war, that dragged in all communities eventually dividing the nation between christian and Muslim. In the ensuing violence and massacres more than 100,000 may have been killed. The Syrians intervened in the first year and in 1982 so did the Israelis.
After the Israeli withdrawel from Beirut Lebanon became a Syrian colony accept for the south which was jointly contested by israel and Shia Islamists, and the north which was largely given over to the Maronites. However more than 200,000(mostly Christians) were forced to flee in the period.
This is an important work.
Seth J. Frantzman
This is excellent work.......2005-01-13
Itamar Rabinovich's The War for Lebanon is by far one of the most authoritative works on the Lebanese civil war. It is a quick survey that gives background information about most of the players, whether international, regional or domestic.
The account is concise, however, and sacrifices some details for the sake of brevity and coherence. Rabinovich's style is rich and attractive. For readers familiar with the Middle East, the book would serve as a fresh reminder and wouldn't take more than a couple of evening to finish.
Another drawback is that the book covers the period 1975-1984 without covering the rest of the civil war that ended on 1990. Perhaps an updated version with the war's conclusion and perhaps some analysis of the aftermath of the war are currently needed.
If you are looking for the history of the Lebanese civil war, this book is the one you are looking for. If you want some more history of the war, get Kamal Salibi's A House of Many Mansions as a supplement. Between the two books, you would have a complete and comprehensive idea of the Lebanese modern politics and its history.
Product Description
Few monarchs have ascended the English throne amid as much eulogy and rejoicing as James I when he came to his English kingdom in 1603. There was good reason for it. James brought a ready-made, legitimate dynasty to a nation which had spent much of the previous century agonizing about the succession. The eulogies continued throughout his reign and after his death. However, for every line of flattery there was also one of malicious gossip, and this mixture has made his reign difficult to evaluate fairly. The popular view of James today is likely to be negative, focused on his personal habits such as his stutter, his extravagant spending, and his demonstrative homosexual behaviour, rather than his competence as King. This book looks beneath the flattery and above the gossip by going back to the first-hand evidence: original papers and letters held at The National Archives. A lively narrative sets this unique material in context and provides a fresh, balanced survey of England's first Stuart King. Featured documents include: * Shakespeare and his company at James' coronation procession * James authorizing the torture of Guy Fawkes * James intervening in a witchcraft trial * Pocahontas at James' court

Book Description
Hermann von Helmholtz was a leading figure of nineteenth-century European intellectual life, remarkable even among the many scientists of the period for the range and depth of his interests. A pioneer of physiology and physics, he was also deeply concerned with the implications of science for philosophy and culture.
From the 1850s to the 1890s, Helmholtz delivered more than two dozen popular lectures, seeking to educate the public and to enlighten the leaders of European society and governments about the potential benefits of science and technology to a developing modern society. David Cahan has selected fifteen of these lectures, which reflect the wide range of topics of crucial importance to Helmholtz and his audiences. Among the subjects discussed are the origins of the planetary system, the relation of natural science to science in general, the aims and progress of the physical sciences, the problems of perception, and academic freedom in German universities. This collection also includes Helmholtz's fascinating lectures on the relation of optics to painting and the physiological causes of harmony in music, which provide insight into the relations between science and aesthetics.
Science and Culture makes available again Helmholtz's eloquent arguments on the usefulness, benefits, and, intellectual pleasures of understanding the natural world. With Cahan's Introduction to set these essays in their broader context, this collection makes an important contribution to the philosophical and intellectual history of Europe at a time when science played an increasingly significant role in social, economic, and cultural life.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent collection of Helmholtz's best essays.......1999-04-22
Hermann von Helmholtz was quite simply one of the most important German scientists of the 19th century. However, what becomes so clear when one peruses the collection edited by David Cahan is that Helmholtz has much of interest to say to philosophers, artists, musicians, and historians. This collection includes his most important public addresses on a wide range of topics and provides a clear portrait of the breadth of Helmholtz's contributions to science and intellectual life. This provides in English what is lacking in the original German editions - a readily available, inexpensive edition of Helmholtz's highly influential work.
