My son took to this book right away. It gives good drawing directions, but what I like about it most is that it familiarizes him with some classic architecture and styles.

I bought this for my son who is still learning to draw and write. When it arrived, I grabbed our big Magnadoodle and started drawing these myself to see how they looked. It was great! I could easily draw these in just a couple of minutes.
If you have a budding artist who likes architecture, this is a good tool to getting started. Once the structure is drawn then they can embellish it with their own imagination!

Bought this book for my nephew who has always had an interest in building. At the age of three he was able to put any toy, plane or castle together without someone reading the instructions to him. I bought the book to see if he an interest in understanding the basics of constructing a building. He opened the book and within 60 minutes had drawn a bridge, a skyscraper and a castle. He has completed the entire book and his older sister is also using the book. I highly recommend this book to any adult interested in expanding a child's mind. He may never become an architect but he has developed areas of his brain that might help him solve a problem in other disciplines whether science, math, or art. Good book. I would like to use it also.

I'm a landscape and still life artist who needed to create an SF or Fantasy style building or city. I didn't want to take the time to learn drafting. This book is for the beginner or advanced artist who wants a step by step, how-to for drawing accurate structures easily in a few minutes.
No complicated perspective drawings. Quickly draw famous buildings from around the world.
This is a great book for children too. No complicted directions.
A simple guide for creating any type of building you desire. The author makes it simple in as little as 3 easy steps.

The book was cheaply priced which was a bonus but the prints of the drawings were not very good, they were dark. On the cover they took it upon themselves to lighten up the image but when you look at the image inside the book it is much darker.
Not that the book is an overall bust. The drawings of the faces at the end of the book are exquisite, fluid and really show the best of what Burne-Jones has to offer and the large format lets you enjoy the line work and delicate shading.
Not bad but not awesome.

Eccentric Humor for Twisted Americans.......2003-07-17
I picked this up in a comic book shop whilst on a shopping trip to buy food for my pet snake, Zoe. Ordinarily, I'd by wary of entering such an establishment for fear of the irrepairable damage to my reputation. This comic, however, has made such a gamble not only worthwhile, but perhaps even a life affirming moment.
The Flaming Carrot is a bizarre, twisted, dim-witted wreck of a superhero, and one of the most unique characters in all of American literature to boot. He drinks, carouses, causes trouble, is prone to bouts of dementia, and even occasionally manages to emerge victorious over the seedy forces of evil and corruption that plague the collective American consciousness. His friends consist of other minor league heros, the Mystery Men (some of whom you may remember from the feature film of the same name), and drunken bimbos. He even has an awkward, dorky friend whom he's always trying to rid himself of. At the end of the day, its always difficult to tell whether or not he's actually caused more problems than he's solved, and that's what makes this book terrific in its eccentric humor.
Zany Postmodern Pop Weirdness.......2002-01-14
If you like different things, explore the skewed vision of one of America's post-underground comics pioneers. This collected volume recaptures Bob Burden's hard-to-find art and story of the 80s, along with completely new material. At once surreal yet wholly earthy and relatable, the misadventures of the bizarre Everyman Carrot are likely to resonate with each of us, if we are honest enough. I would definitely reccomend this tome to the hard-to-entertain, as well as the post-modern/pop culture archivist and historian. Real primo stuff.

The return to school following traumatic brain injury (TBI) is fraught with challenges for children and adolescents, their families, and school professionals. This volume provides the practical knowledge needed to understand the neuropsychological problems associated with TBI and facilitate students' reintegration into the regular or special education classroom. Research-based strategies are presented for assessing and accommodating each student's needs, with suggestions for testing that can be completed by practitioners without extensive neuropsychological training. Featuring numerous illustrative clinical examples, the book also includes an extended case history that brings to life the entire process of recovery from TBI.
Reviewing basic neuroanatomy, the book first discusses the functional problems and areas of learning difficulty that typically arise from different types of injury. It explores the associated emotional challenges and issues facing families, emphasizing the importance of working closely with parents and building effective home-school partnerships. Identified and briefly described are over 30 psychological measures that can be used to evaluate cognitive and academic skills; memory and learning; attention; executive and reasoning skills; visual-motor and perceptual skills; and psychosocial, emotional, and behavioral functioning. Detailed sample assessments are provided for two students with injuries of varying severity, showing how test results and other information can be integrated into a useful comprehensive report. Guidelines are then presented for managing school reentry and conducting team-based planning and decision making. General programming considerations are discussed, as are specific interventions that incorporate knowledge from the fields of ADHD, learning disabilities, and adult rehabilitation.
Written in a clear, non-technical style, this book is an essential resource for school psychologists, counselors, and social workers; special education professionals; and other clinicians working with young people. It will also serve as a text in graduate-level neuropsychological assessment courses.

Pass this one by..........2004-12-13
This is a grossly simplistic look at TBI rehab. Just compare it to Mark Ylvisaker's "Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation" and you will realize that Clikeman's book was a completely wasted effort. Three years after a fairly comprehensive work is published, here we have someone wasting trees with a superficial treatment of the identical material.

If you only buy one brain injury book this ought to be it........1999-01-28
A very useful book and one of the few that does an excellent job of integrating theory with application. As such, it is useful for the practitioner as well as parents of children with brain injury (though it is written at a college level). Ylvisaker and Szekeres' chapter "Frameworks for Cognitive Rehabilitation" is excellent. Likewise, Marshall's chapter provides a good description of the recovery continuum and all the chapters on intervention offer more practical advice that ranges from low tech to high tech solutions.

It was a crazy way to win World War II in the Pacific-- All the United States had to do was to attach small incendiary bombs to millions of bats and release them over Japan's major cities. As the bats went to roost, a million fires would flare up in remote crannies of the wood and paper buildings common throughout Japan. When their cities were reduced to ashes, the Japanese would surely capitulate... The plan made sense to a handful of eccentric promoters and researchers, who convinced top military brass and even President Roosevelt to back the scheme. It might have worked, except that another secret weapon--something to do with atoms--was chosen to end the war. Told here by the youngest member of the team, this is the story of the bat bomb project, or Project X-Ray, as it was officially known. This oddball cast of characters included an eccentric inventor, a distinguished Harvard scientist, a biologist with a chip on his shoulder, a movie star, a Texas guano collector, a crusty Marine Corps colonel, a Maine lobster fisherman, an ex-mobster, and a tiger. Not to be defeated by minor logistical hurdles, the bat bomb researchers risked life and limb to explore uncharted bat caves and "recruit" thousands of bats to serve their country. Through months of personality conflicts, military snafus, and technical failures the team pressed on, certain that bats could end the war with Japan. And they might have--in their first airborne test, the bat bombers burned an entire brand-new military airfield to the ground. An unknown but funny and very well-written chapter in history. The bat bomb carried zillions of bats, each of which had an incendiary device tied to it. The goal was to burn down Japanese towns. During its first test, it accidentally burned down the building housing the project! Talk about just desserts. This will cure anyone who thinks history is boring.

This book contains the funniest line I have ever read, already quoted by another reviewer: "We got a sure thing like the bat bomb going...." But there is much more to this book. The writing is incredible. For example, the author describes what happens when they use movie lights to illuminate the inside of one cave for the first time in its history. The description of almost being suffocated by clouds of bats so thick is first rate. Also, the tender retelling of his romance with Arlie is top notch. Who would have expected such deft handling of first love in a book about bat bombs? It made me want more of this material. I also treasured the retelling of the tiger mascot, "Top Sarge." Or when our hero tries to beat the cowboys at their own game in calf-roping. I could go on and on. I think the key to the success of this book is how the author treats all the characters with upmost respect. There is nothing snarky about how the author treats the self-important Patsy, who was Capone's driver, or the guano salesman.
Read this book. You won't be disappointed.

I read this at about the same time I discovered Richard Rhodes' "The Making of the Atomic Bomb". The contrast between the seemingly insane bat bomb and the almost farcial nature of it's builder's quest contrasted wonderfully with the serious and dark tones of the Manhattan project. This book has parts that made me laugh out loud, which is something that few history books can do.
The story of prospecting the cave is priceless, and it gives me the heebie-jeebies just thinking about it...

BAT BOMB covers a quite unknown but important part of World War II history. It got good reviews, but the public seemed to neglect it (I don't know why). This book is not only an important history lesson, it is also a wildly entertaining read. Don't YOU neglect this book. Read it. You'll love it.
