Book Description
Joseph Eichler was a pioneering developer who defied conventional wisdom by hiring progressive architects to design Modernist homes for the growing middle class of the 1950s. He was known for his innovations, including "built-ins" for streamlined kitchen work, for introducing a multipurpose room adjacent to the kitchen, and for the classic atrium that melded the indoors with the outdoors. For nearly twenty years, Eichler Homes built thousands of dwellings in California, acquiring national and international acclaim. Eichler: Modernism Rebuilds the American Dream examines Eichler's legacy as seen in his original homes and in the revival of the Modernist movement, which continues to grow today. The homes that Eichler built were modern in concept and expression, and yet comfortable for living. Eichler's work left a legacy of design integrity and set standards for housing developers that remain unparalleled in the history of American building. This book captures and illustrates that legacy with impressive detail, engaging history, firsthand recollections about Eichler and his vision, and 250 photographs of Eichler homes in their prime. Paul Adamson, AIA, holds a Master of Architecture degree from Columbia University and has practiced in New York and San Francisco. He is currently a designer at the San Francisco firm of Hornberger + Worstell, Inc. He lives in Kensington, California. Marty Arbunich is director-publisher of the Eichler Network, a Bay Area based company devoted exclusively to supporting and preserving the architecture and lifestyle surrounding California's 11,000 Eichler homes. He lives in San Francisco.
Customer Reviews:
The Book on Eichler.......2006-11-15
Whether you have an interest in mid-century modern design, Frank Lloyd Wright's Usonian architecture or just Eichler...this book is a terrifc buy. While content rich it is still visually appealing and can easily function as a "coffee table" book. This book also serves as a terrific "idea guide" for those in search of small spacce solutions and/or modern landscaping layouts that bring the "outdoors in."
Great information in california.......2006-07-17
This book gives you alot of information. If you are interested in Eichler this is the book to get.
is this book in black and white?.......2005-05-23
Note: This book has 250 duotone photographs. The website run by the author is fantastic.
Eichler, I grew up near them........2003-07-06
My word! I remember touring Eichler homes in Orange California with my parents. The homes, to me, were spectacular. My parents thought they seemed cheap. They were from the midwest and were used to brick homes built for powerful winters. We moved into another home several blocks from the Eichler Subdivision. I walked past the homes on they way to elementary school and just admired them so much. I guess I will never know what it is like to live in one, but I do know what it was like to tour an Eichler as a model home. What a memory! These are very special homes.
Scott K Dolik
A Wonderful Book!.......2002-12-06
As a Eichler home owner I couldn't wait for this book to arrive and thankfully it was a joy to read and pour over all the original photos in the book. I always knew I owned a special home and now I own a wonderful book that validates that too. Even if you are not a Eichler homeowner, but rather just a fan of mid-century homes this is also a must have for your library as it goes into more then just Joe Eichler and his homes. Enjoy the read!
Book Description
'Green Screen' combines film studies with environmental history and politics, aiming to establish a cultural criticism informed by 'green' thought. David Ingram argues that Hollywood cinema has largely perpetuated romantic attitudes to nature and has played an important ideological role in the 'greenwashing' of ecological discourses. The book accounts for the rise of environmental concerns in Hollywood cinema, and explores the ways in which attitudes to nature and the environment are constructed in a number of movies. It is divided into three sections: Wilderness in Hollywood Cinema; Wild Animals in Hollywood Cinema; Development and the Politics of Land Use. Movies discussed include The China Syndrome, Pocahontas, Free Willy, Chinatown, Gorillas in the Mist, Medicine Man.

Now, National Geographic offers novice to advanced birders and photographers a sturdy, easy-to-carry guide packed with the information they will need to take their best wild bird photographs. Includes comprehensive information with full-color images on the right films and lenses to use; the best time of day to shoot; stalking, luring, and posing birds; range maps and birding hotspots; and a complete index. This excellent companion to National Geographic's #1 selling National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America is the only book photographers will need to capture stunning images of wild birds.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, left me wanting a bit more...........2007-08-29
This is a good easy to read book that has good information about getting closer to birds. Really good techniques for building a blind and outstanding web site and information in the back of the book. There are some very neat "tricks" that he tell about how to get that great shot. However, I was just left going... hmmm I would like a bit more.
But for the price, shesh, it is worth it. Used for just over $1, yeah buy the book. Great for a reference book if anything.
Basics of Bird Photography for Intermediate Photographers........2005-04-15
National Geographic's field guide to bird photography is a short, basic handbook for photographing birds in the wild and in your back yard. The advice by Rulon Simmons is simple and straightforward. Tips are provided by Bates Littlehales, who took most of the approximately 100 color photographs that illustrate the book. The techniques discussed range from simple to advanced, but most are not described in great detail. The guide is best suited to photographers with at least intermediate-level experience, since it requires a 35mm or digital SLR with interchangeable lenses and doesn't provide photographic instruction on metering, exposure, or how to operate equipment.
The Field Guide starts off by explaining what equipment you will need, with emphasis on long lenses, although the advice on film is deficient. There is advice for luring and photographing various species of birds at bird feeders, approaching birds in the wild, photographing birds at their nests with and without a blind, photographing birds in flight, and the challenges and opportunities presented by diverse weather conditions. The final chapter lists the author's favorite places to photograph birds in the U.S., 34 locations in 15 states, with a brief description of each birding spot. There is a sort of appendix of "Useful Information" in the back of the book, which includes recommended methods of getting close to birds, listed alphabetically by species, recommended feed and type of feeder by species, lists of essential and optional equipment, web sites, magazines, and books about birds and photography, and an index.
A good general guide to avian photography.......2004-06-04
As if teaching children with challenging behaviors isn't enough, I spend much of my time off birding with my camera. Some might argue the two activities are one and the same, and anyone who has tried to capture a great blue heron lifting off the wetlands, only to turn tail and fly behind rushes would agree...speaking from experience. Whenever I set off to capture the feathered members of our planet, I get a few shots, but always think I could do better. If only I'd not moved so fast, if only I could afford a 600mm lens, if only...
Mr. Simmons's book has helped me to look at bird photography a bit differently, and given me permission to be happy with the good shots I do get. Although he covers many of the basic tenets of bird photography, such as knowing your subject, having the right equipment, and shooting techniques, the true gift of this guide is his concept of showing the birds in their environmental setting. Most of his photos are those wonderful bird portraits in larger than life detail we would all love to take, but he makes a good case for showing birds in their habitat, providing enough detail to identify the bird. Most of my photos are of this type, because although I am fairly good at stalking and being patient, my longest lens is still only 420mm with a tele-extender.
He gives information on how to shoot various aspects of bird behavior, such as courtship, nesting and flight, and this information is all helpful. He also gives ideas for various categories of birds, such as shorebirds. The book is guidebook sized, so it can travel into the field with you. If you wish to become more serious in your efforts to take photos of birds, whether in the field or at your backyard feeder, this is a great resource.
Excellent Book.......2003-01-31
This book is wonderful. It gives great ideas for photographing birds. I was impressed how Rulon Simmons goes about getting the pictures in natural settings. I even found a website for his work at http://rulonsimmons.tripod.com .
Wonderful, In-depth guide to birding.......2002-10-28
The pictures are beautiful, and the commentary is very useful for new ideas and information on photographing birds.

Customer Reviews:
One of the greatest mangas ever made!.......2002-12-25
By far, it's my favorite volume. There are more scenes with Ash and Eiji together, which is a plus. I absolutley loved this manga since the first time I bought it. It's a shoujo manga that appeals to both sexes because the plot and the artwork is more like a shonen manga. You won't be bothered by the really low shonen-ai content on the manga, so I say you should give it a chance. It contains lots of violence and some mature themes, but I wouldn't call it exactly for adults.

Outstanding audio edition of a high interest book.......1999-07-08
Stories for a Man's Heart audio was a tremendous blessing as my husband and I took a trip by car. The stories were so high interest and heart warming that we didn't want to get off the highway for a rest stop. The male reader is excellent. The stories are all true and some of them lingered with us for a long time. This audio is a perfect gift for any man--any age.

The lives of Ulysses S. Grant and William T. Sherman are classic underdog stories. Both of these "obscure failures" experienced more disappointment than success prior to the start of the Civil War. By 1861, they had each resigned from the U.S. Army and failed in several civilian pursuits between them, including farming, real estate, retail, and banking. Further, Grant was known as a drunk and Sherman was labeled insane. But once they threw themselves into the war effort, their best traits and talents began to reveal themselves. Even their motives were similar--both men joined the war not to eradicate slavery but to hold the Union together, believing that secession was equal to treason. This dual biography gracefully reveals how the two men grew to be "as brothers," why their partnership proved essential to victory for the Union, and how well they complemented and helped each other in their lives and careers, despite some major differences. For instance, though he possessed tremendous talent, Sherman was insecure and initially asked Abraham Lincoln never to give him a superior command. Grant, on the other hand, never doubted his ability to lead, and he quickly, if quietly, moved up the chain of command. Once he recognized Sherman's abilities, Grant made sure to keep him close, and they grew to depend upon each other completely. Through their near-daily interaction, even when separated by distance, both men honed their skills and eventually came up with a winning strategy for the war, which they executed in a brilliant two-pronged assault.
The book also discusses Grant's and Sherman's marriages, their relationships with their soldiers, and their dealings with politicians to provide well-rounded and complete portraits of these fascinating leaders. Grant and Sherman is a thoughtful portrait of the two men who "other than Lincoln... would have more to do with winning the war that preserved the Union than anyone else." --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
"We were as brothers," William Tecumseh Sherman said, describing his relationship with Ulysses S. Grant. They were incontestably two of the most important figures in the Civil War, but until now there has been no book about their victorious partnership and the deep friendship that made it possible.
Heeding the call to save the Union, each struggled past political hurdles to join the war effort. Taking each other's measure at the Battle of Shiloh, they began their unique collaboration. Often together under fire on the war's great battlefields, they shared the demands of family life, the heartache of loss, and supported each other in the face of mudslinging by the press and politicians. Their growing mutual admiration and trust set the stage for the crucial final year of the war and the peace that would follow.
Moving and elegantly written,
Grant and Sherman is a historical page-turner: a gripping portrait of two men whose friendship, forged on the battlefield, would win the Civil War.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent view of two generals.......2007-07-08
This is an excellent read with excellent insights into the personalities and temperments of the two great Union generals in the Civil War. The personal observations shared between Grant and Sherman show how much of the strategy of 1864 was a combination of the minds of these two military giants.
Silly title and premise, but good content.......2007-06-17
Flood gives the reader sound accounts of Grant and Sherman's Civil War biographies, insight into Army politics, and a glimpse of several battles with a readable and entertaining prose. He chronicles the rise of Grant and Sherman from arguable failures to their rise as Civil-War heroes.
I enjoyed the accounts of the battles, although they cannot be considered anything close to comprehensive, as they concentrated solely on how those events affected the lives of the main characters. While the book contains maps of the battles, there were only a few and placed before the Prologue and not referred to in the text. I found the analysis of Grants and Sherman's hesitancy and inaction at Chattanooga to be very interesting, along with the jealously from Thomas and Hooker - both of whom seemed to get short shrift due to Grant's favoritism of Sherman. I thought Flood provided good coverage of the confusion and dysfunction in the Cabinet and Army after Lincoln's death. He provided excellent detail of Sherman's screw-up of surrender talks with Johnston - the most complete account I have read thus far.
In regards to the book's premise, while Flood captures some genuinely interesting and sincere interaction between the two, the premise that their friendship "won the war" is preposterous. Nor does he make the argument that their friendship itself was great. They barely knew each other prior to the war, and their partnership during the war lasted less than two years, and there did not appear to be consistent interaction after the war. The concept seems rather contrived, as with every chapter the author makes out-of-context note of someone's comment on their friendship, such as their interactions were "free, affectionate, and good humored", "the friendship was there for all to see", or "their encounter was more like that of two school boys coming together after vacation".
In describing a post war parade, he says "There it was: the apotheosis of the friendship and military partnership that had brought the Union and its armies to this day. They were the men, the two generals, who more than other soldiers had made this moment happen, and everyone there knew it."
I enjoyed the historical accounts and insights on their relationship, and a few details on the two I had not known much about, but I found the insinuation of a magical friendship to be rather a veiled attempt to spit out supposedly new material on a very crowded subject.
the destiny of two men..........2007-01-30
Grant and Sherman had such an incredible relationship as outlined in this book by Mr Flood, it is not hard to imagine that that relationship was a decisive factor in the Civil War. After Lee had lost some of his most trsuted commanders (Stonewall), the Union Army found it's leaders and purpose. This is a fascinating book for those who are Civil Wars buffs or not, a wonderful American tale.
We are as brothers........2007-01-29
Grant and Sherman: The Friendship That Won the Civil War by Charles Bracelen Flood examines the relationship between the two great generals. It provides much information, but little of it new, on the two individuals. It shows as Sherman is quoted, "that we are as brothers."
The book gives the background of each man and his family prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. I enjoyed the coverage given of Grant's and Sherman's relationships with friends, family members, and their wives. The book shows the chemistry and respect the two have for each other. The book shows Grant as the commander and Sherman as the subordinate who managed to achieve loyalty and mutual respect. Neither would have been as great or accomplished nearly as much without the other.
The book could have been titled from failure to success as it explains how each man came to his responsibilities in the US Army. I enjoyed seeing the relationship between the two develop. We see it grow as they had a nominal knowledge of each from their West Point days where Sherman was two years ahead of Grant to where Sherman's presence encourages Grant while he is writing his memoirs.
The book achieves its point of showing they had a friendship. I remember examples at Fort Henry where Sherman was supplying Grant with what he needed even though Sherman had date of rank on Grant. Sherman and Grant talking at Shiloh were Sherman was ready to retreat and regroup and Grant to advance on the second day. Sherman encourages Grant not to leave after Major General Halleck takes field command of the Army from Grant following Shiloh. The Corinth Campaign, Military governorship of Memphis, Vicksburg Campaign, Grant in charge of the entire US Army, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Atlanta, Savannah, Columbia, and on to Raleigh for Sherman as well as the Wilderness, Petersburg, fall of Richmond and finally Appomattox for Grant. Their clear strategy in Sherman's words: "He was to go for Lee and I was to go for Joe Johnston."
The chapter on Sherman in trouble was very interesting as it gave the most in depth record I personally have read of the controversy surrounding Johnston's surrender to Sherman. We see how Grant has Sherman's back and helps him through this time.
It is a relatively short work of just over 400 pages. It was an enjoyable read. Read and reviewed by Jimmie A. Kepler
Interesting but not completely satisfying.......2006-08-26
As other reviews note, this book is marred by some errors (e.g., it was not Grant who abrogated Kentucky's neutrality; most works I have read credit The Bishop General, Polk, with that accomplishment). It also promises more in the subtitle than it can deliver ("The Friendship That Won the Civil War"). I just don't see the case made that their friendship led to victory. It was hardly irrelevant, of course, but the subtitle's claim sets a high standard to meet.
However the performance of generals such as George Thomas suggests that others could as well have been the hammer in the West after Grant's accession to control of all of the Union armies. And Thomas' record before Sherman became the top general in the west could be said to be no worse than Sherman's (in fact, Buell's "Warrior Generals" argues that Thomas was one of the best of all Union generals and was never given full credit; while the argument is not, in the final analysis, fully convincing, one cannot downgrade Thomas' contributions to the North).
Many of the stories and events here are quite familiar to readers of Civil War history. And there is rather less on the battlefield events than might have been called for.
Nonetheless, in the end, this is a good analysis of the friendship between Grant and Sherman and how it did help them to mesh their strategic efforts.

Book Description
This book explores the dynamics of the struggle for racial and ethnic identities in the southern United States, focusing on the Lumbee Indians of North Carolina. The book is also a history of American Indian concepts and visions of history, starting with the contemporary period and with the perspectives of the Lumbee Indians, and working backward to the colonial period and to the major groupings of Indian peoples. The book addresses the key question of how differing interpretations of history cause traditionally oppressed peoples to continue their struggle. Lumbee Indian Histories is a part of a larger project, centred at the Max Planck Institut für Geschichte, in Gottingen, Germany, to create new methodological approaches to, and concepts for, an historical anthropology.
Customer Reviews:
Best book on the topic, but not perfect........2003-03-17
This is the most complete history of the Lumbees to date, but still lacking. Sider is very insightful, but utterly incompetent at organizing his thoughts. The book is a string of fascinating nuggets strung together in almost random fashion. Sider understands that peoplehood is socially constructed, and analyzes the Lumbee ethnogenesis of the late 19th century very well. But the book also lapses into a primordialist "blood essentialism" at times. Sider assumes that because the Lumbees are Indians today that they have always been so. Sider did little primary historical research, and utterly failed to come to grips with Paul Heinegg's comprehensive genealogical account of the Lumbee origins and migrations as a free mulatto population coming down from Virginia. Lumbee scholarship in general tends to recycle the same few dubious 19th century sources endlessly. Sider rarely moves out of this mode, but his is definitely the most insightful analysis in print to date.
it is a crime that this book is out of print.......2001-12-19
once again, cambridge had dropped the ball and let a perfectly wonderful book go out of print. this book, by an anthropologist and activist who worked among the lumbee since the late sixties, is essential reading for anyone interested in ethnogenesis, the federal acknowledgment program in the u.s., and the history of race relations in north carolina. buy it used if you can and hope that some sensible press picks up the publishing rights and makes it available again.
