Book Description
This is a re-issue of Sloane's classic folksy history of barn folklore, architecture, and history, which has been out of print for twenty years. "Eric Sloane's An Age of Barns" is filled with fabulous black-and-white illustrations from this great American artist. Covering all types of American and Canadian barns and everything associated with them-implements and tools, hex signs, silos, out buildings, hinges, barn raising, and more-"Eric Sloane's An Age of Barns" is a spectacular album tribute to this important facet of our architecture and agriculture. This book is sure to once again become a collector's item.
Customer Reviews:
A loving eye for detail.......2007-04-25
Sloane's books capture the romanticism of the past better than any picture books, and that is certainly true for his An Age of Barns. The beautiful line drawings range from evocative perspectives to working sections, giving you a good idea of how these barns worked. There are Shaker round barns, traditional gambrel barns, Amish barn raisings and a wide variety of outbuildings associated with the early American farmstead. He lovingly focuses on hinge details, stairs and ventilation openings. Sloane's eye never missed a detail, and for anyone who loves old barns this is the book to get.
Nice book, but not Sloane's best.......2007-01-11
This has some interesting history of early barns, especially those of New England. Drawings are well done, as usual. If you are interested in barns west of the Mississippi look elsewhere.
I have a barn.......2006-09-26
and I understand that barn so much better now that I have read this book. Sloane gives a brief overview of the history of barns, regional types of barns, and even the tools to raise a barn. A lovely book.
Eric Sloane-The Master Illustrator of Rural America.......2005-10-08
When Eric Sloane wrote this book in the 1950's, the United States had already made the transition from being an agricultural nation into an industrial society. Fortunately, there were still plenty of examples of America's rural past scattered along the backroads and other forgotten areas of the nation's countryside. Sloane spent many years, seeking out these historic relics so that he could study and sketch them. The result is whole series of books that chronicle America's historic material culture. This book focuses on barns.
What makes an Eric Sloane book so unforgetable are the black and white sketches. If you are a visual learner who believes a good drawing is worth a thousand words, Eric Sloane is the author for you. By no means is this an academic study of the different barn styles that existed in the United States. Instead this book is a collection of beautiful drawings that can help the reader understand how barns were built and what they were used for. This is a magical book. If you like it, you will have many hours of pleasure seeking out and reading Eric Sloane's other books. Highly recommended. A great value.

Book Description
Ralph T. Coe has collected American Indian art for half a century, forming a renowned collection that represents all regions and periods of American Indian art. This attractive catalogue presents two hundred works from Coe's remarkable collection. Featured are exquisite examples of prehistoric stone objects, button blankets, crest objects, masks, canoe and tipi models, dolls and figurines, woven basketry, tobacco paraphernalia, and a selection of contemporary works, all of which bring to life the vivid cultures of the American Indian throughout the centuries. In the accompanying text, Coe entertainingly describes his extensive travels in the United States and Canada as he searched for objects for his collection. The catalogue also includes an essay by Eugene V. Thaw about Coe's contribution to the awareness of the artistic heritage of American Indian art; an overview of the collecting of American Indian art by Jonathan King; and a discussion of aesthetic theory in relation to this art form by Judith Ostrowitz.

Book Description
Imagine a hockey legend having a son whose skill and intensity match his own, a deadly accuracy and toughness passed on from one generation to the next. Well, imagine no longer. Brett Hull, NHL sensation and offspring of the legendary Bobby Hull, has filled his father's skates and then some, leading the NHL in goals over the last ten seasons, winning the prestigious Lady Byng trophy and the Hart trophy, and powering his way into the upper echelon of hockey stars.
Now a key member of the successful Dallas Stars, Brett tells his own story and shares his troubles and triumphs. Through all the pressure and controversy that comes with being an NHL great, he strives to stay on top of his game and to maintain an easygoing attitude. "My only game plan," he writes, "is to keep smilin' and shootin'. It's just the way I am."
Customer Reviews:
Very Enjoyable!.......2006-08-05
This is probably the most enjoyable book I have read regarding hockey or hockey players. Brett provides a light-hearted look at his life that is neither boastful nor "preachy". He is surprisingly modest given the extraordinary career he has had. I particularly enjoyed hearing of his days growing up in the shadow of his legendary dad and how he overcame his own personal obstacles. This book could easily have been two or three times as thick but I am guessing Brett would not have enjoyed writing a lengthy tome - and clearly Brett is motivated by fun more than anything else! A great lesson for anyone!
The Biography of Brett Hull.......2006-03-14
Brett Hull was a great hockey player. He worked very hard to become a star player. It was very hard growing up the son of a famous hockey player, especailly after his parents divorced. I think Brett Hull will be remembered and admired for his goal scoring and records he set on the ice. After reading this book I will remember him for how hard he works and how he never gave up his dream. I would recommend this book top everyone that is a hockey lover. I enjoyed the book and was happy I chose it.
GAME WINNING BOOK BY BRETT HULL.......2004-10-18
THIS IS THE STORY OF BRETT HULL IN HIS OWN WORDS. I REALLY LIKED THIS BOOK. BRETT DOES A NICE JOB DESCRIBING HIS CAREER, RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS DIVORCED PARENTS, AND HIS THOUGHTS ON BEING HIMSELF. BRETT FINALLY PLAYED ON A STANLEY CUP WINNER IN 1999. HE TELLS OF ALL THE PLAYOFF DEFEATS AND THE FRUSTRATIONS DURING HIS CAREER. HE ADDS HUMOR, HONESTY, AND ALOT OF INSIGHTS ON THE GAME OF HOCKEY. I RECOMMEND THIS TO ALL HOCKEY FANS AS A GOOD READ.
This is a great book..........1999-10-20
This is a great book, all of you brett hull fans or not, should go and get this book, it is definetily the best book i've ever read in a long time

Book Description
Vividly encapsulating the absurdities, heartbreaks, and possibilities of contemporary child rearing, this book shows how parents today are all too often caught up in a guilt-driven pendulum swing between parenting too little and parenting too much. Dr. Ehrensaft helps us imagine a society where we can overcome the treacherous balancing acts of work and family demands; where "good-enough" replaces perfect parenting, harriedness is traded for harmony, and children grow on a healthy continuum from infancy to adulthood.
Customer Reviews:
"Just say NO" to Spoiling a Child!.......1999-10-03
Dr. Ehrensaft has a gift for blending the clinical and emotional aspects of what children need as opposed to what they want. The importance of saying 'no' today for responsibile children tomorrow; sums up the insightful wisdom of this well written, heartfelt book. A 'just say no' approach to combat addiciton to instant gratification and materialism that produces the insatiable demands of children. Dr. Ehrensaft captures the value of setting limits as only a working parent can.
An incisive look at today's confused parenting methods.......1999-07-23
Diane Ehrensaft's fine book "Spoiling Childhood" offers real-life situations from her extensive clinical background to illustrate the bind in which today's "confused parents" find themselves. Highly "conversational" in mood, it aims to help replace parental guilt with "good enough," not perfect parenting. This refreshing book is the one to read if you or anyone you know has ever stopped to say "Wait a minute...I'm the adult here...why is it so hard for me to take control of this situation?" This book is so good I have contacted the author and arranged for her to speak to a parent group in our community this fall.
Crucial reading for parents today!.......1999-05-25
Parents who love Dr. Laura Schlessinger will love this book too! Ehrensaft zings into the fundamental psychological issues behind parenting styles of today's parents, and places them in a cultural and historical context. For the first time, I've read a book that identifies the pressures that contribute to my own parenting mistakes and pitfalls. By avoiding giving a cookbook solution to overcoming the expectations we place on our children, Ehrensaft forces readers to think about the motivations behind their own parenting styles, and thus to make decisions about how to make our children's lives less confusing. This book is an outstanding commentary on parenting today, and I am recommending it to my friends, relatives and clients, AND my children's teachers. If you are a parent in today's world, feeling confused, worried or guilty about your parenting style and its impact on your children, READ this book!
A fascinating look at modern parenting.......1999-02-17
I recognized myself and my friends in many chapters of this book. What's interesting is that we are mostly stay-at-home moms who have also been afftected by the harried parent/rush-to-the-top syndrome that is modern parenting. After reading this book I was more grateful than ever that I do stay home with my children. I also felt more confidence in my parenting instincts and gained resolve to be a stronger parent. The most disappointing aspect of this book was Dr. E.'s conclusion. There was no recommendation that parents put aside their own ambition for a short time, at least while their children are not in school. The simplistic assertion that most parents work because they have to is bunk - most work to support a lifestyle that is heavy with new cars, huge houses, nice clothes and lots of dinners out. I know because many of my working friends are among this group. Dr. E.'s perfect work world is unrealistic and unfair. It's not up to the employers to take care of our families needs - that is our responsibility.
Too long in coming!.......1998-12-27
This is one terrific book that goes a long way toward easing the seemingly ubiquitous guilt of today's middle-class parents. I wish I had had it when my own children were younger, but I'm glad to offer it as a resource to parents who consult with me about their difficulties in setting limits with their own children. Ehrensaft clearly elucidates the toll on contemporary parents of many competing, often contradictory, pressures. While she recognizes that raising children might have been easier in simpler times, she does not advocate the impossiblity of retreating into an idealized world of certanties. Instead, she offers parents tools for helping themselves and their children toward healthy development in a world that can only become more complex. Highly recommended for parents, teachers, and therapists.
Book Description
First published in 2001, this book brings together all of Arundhati Roy's political writings so far. This revised paperback edition includes two new essays, written in early 2002: 'Democracy: Who's She When She's Not at Home', which examines the horrific communal violence in Gujarat, and 'War Talk: Summer Games with Nuclear Bombs', about the threat of nuclear war in the Subcontinent.
Customer Reviews:
An Angel is She.......2004-09-30
Though her writing may appeal primarily to left-wing intellectuals, this book is a person every individual should have on his or her bookshelf. Her longest essay in this book, The Greater Common Good, focuses on large dam construction, but covers many issues of philosophical interest. Why take away from one and give to another? A utilitarian could make the argument that we should strive for the greatest good for the greatest number of people, but who is receiving the greatest good? We know that it is true that dams harm the environment in a variety of different ways -- e.g. waterlogging. Taking this into consideration along with the sheer costs and the number of people who suffer from dam building, is the utilitarian argument really valid? It seems to me, that it is in fact not even a utilitarian argument.
Arundhati Roy would agree. In this book, she explains that in most development projects throughout India, apart from the Sardar Sarovar project that has received so much attention, the displaced have no records, and they leave virtually no trace at all (Roy 104). This makes it nearly impossible for us to tell exactly or even approximately how many millions of people are suffering from the results of dam construction. Apart from this, according to Roy, the government of India has not issued a post-project evaluation on any of the 3,600 dams it has constructed (Roy 59). How, then, are we to know what good the dams are doing, if they are doing any good at all? Is it really worth it to not know, at the cost of the people?
Many other interesting topics are addressed in this book, and her unique writing style is sure to get a reaction out of you, whatever political beliefs you may hold. I guarantee that by the end of the first short essay you'll either be screaming "yes!" with passion in your voice, or banging your fists on the table in anger. Only a writer as good as Roy is capable of that.
Roy's beautiful, eloquent, and powerful writing style encourages many people in the West to consider issues they may have never considered otherwise. Roy's life has been devoted to the service of humankind, and I am forever in admiration of her strong, passionate spirit.
Read it, or miss out.

Sports and Games of the Renaissance (Sports and Games Through History)
ASIN: 0313316104 |
Book Description
Many of the sports and games played around the world today have their roots in the 18th and 19th centuries. Their history, detailed in Sports and Games of the 18th and 19th Centuries, provides us with an insight into the life and times of cultures across the globe. The dominance of Britain as a world power during this time had a particularly powerful effect in sports, as it organized many Western sports with specific rules, and repressed the traditional sports and games of regions it colonized such as Africa. Rules and equipment for all of the sports and games of this time period, along with diagrams, are included. The book is divided into seven geopolitical regions: Africa, Asia (including the Middle East), British Isles, Europe, Latin America, North America, and Oceania. Each region opens with an essay placing sports and games from that area in their political and cultural context. Following the essay are entries on each individual sport. After a description of the history of the sport, detailed instructions for playing the 18th or 19th century version of the sport follow. A list of equipment is provided, and any alternate rules or variations of the game are also given. As part of the Sports and Games Through History series, this volume will appeal to students as well as sports, history, and cultural enthusiasts of all ages.

Customer Reviews:
Poor code but good research material.......2001-04-06
I agree with the reviews about the code problems but if you go to the website of this book you can get corrected code, samples and errors found. You cannot find a bunch of books in this field of object oriented artificial intelligence so I considered to be a unique. Of course a WIP but a valid foundation, it works.
Don't waste your money.......1999-12-07
This was the main text whilst studying AI for my final year, and the instructors had a damn near riot on their hands from myself and my fellow undergrads. Even the seminar leaders were remarking on how 'Damn awful, horribly messy, downright nasty' the code was. This book conveyed precious little useful information in the main. I think my university will very soon find another text for AI in c++, or go back to teaching lisp.
I'm sure the authors are good at AI, but one thing they aren't good at is writing books. Stick to what you know, guys.
One previous reviewer commented he would to award minus stars - can I make a request for minus to infinity? Yes, it is THAT poor.
An interesting attempt on the theme ( OOP IS REAL AI)........1999-11-20
For Instructors for course in AI: I have tried to use it as main referrence for a master level course in AI. It can only be a support book. It gives a lot of interesting exercises; an overview of all the topics. In important contexts it is too sketchy; But the metaphor ` OOP IS REAL AI' is a questionable position. It is not established in the book. For Instructors for course in OOP: I used the book for defining a group projects for an undergraduate course. Majority of students picked interest in their respective AI themes. Two groups reported that the downloaded code could be run with some small modifications. Other gruops had trobule in making the code run. The exercises defined in the chapters gave easy motivational contexts for the students. Some observations: The chapter 6 on Logic should have been more comprehensive to discuss the theorem prover ( which presented in sec 9.6). In OOP point of view, the chapter on Knowledge Representation was ideal, it worked for the group which worked Semantic Networks. The key need is that the auther should have explained better about the way the code is constructed in the chapter on heuristic search. It will be interesting if the authors show how the case study Interactive Intelligent Kitchen helper as discussed by Timothy Budd is implemented in the framework developed by Kim Tracy and P.Bouthoorn.
Readable, comprehensive and intuitive.......1999-10-02
The book is intuitive for researchers. The content is coherently organised.
Poorly written code wastes pages.......1999-09-10
The authors didn't take the time to learn proper C++ programming before writing this book. There are lots of mistakes (even taking into account the time when this was written, there was no ANSI C++ standard...it is still bad C++ code). The book does a very poor job of describing how to use the object constructs to program agents. The examples are also very poorly designed. Many of the questions ask you to implement algorithm in language X, then in language Y. A book devoted to one language (as specified in the title) should solidly focus on the implementation of that language for the topic. I would give this book negative stars, but amazon doesn't allow that...yet.
Save your money. There are better AI books.
