1 out of 5 stars Estimating for Interior Designers.......2007-09-14

The information has dated photos and not comprehensive. No charts, and estimates in developing concepts and designs based upon square footage. Where is the estimating for budgeting purposes? Ok for the library and for soft goods.

3 out of 5 stars good but could be better.......2007-08-17

There is a wealth of information in this book for estimating for designers or decorators (often the big distinction between the two amounts to the amount of money and time spent on an education, not in practice!). My biggest complaint with this book is that it is not really set up as an easy quick reference. I can get quicker info on the internet.

1 out of 5 stars THIS IS FOR DECORATORS NOT DESIGNERS!!!.......2006-07-27

PLEASE know the difference between a desorator who selects fabrics and finishes only and a designer who most often creates full sets of construction documents for their clients....including but not limited to, demolition plans, construction plans, electrical plans, lighting plans, life safety plans, millwork, wall and ceiling details, cross sections and elevations...etc.

THIS BOOK IS MISSLABELED AND GIVES DESIGNERS WHO HAVE BEEN IN SCHOOL FOR 5 1/2 + YEARS A TITLE OF A DECORATOR WHICH BY NO MEANS IS THE SAME!!! This book is for decorators, not designers.... do not be mislead....check out the table of contaents before purchasing!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Service!.......2005-09-22

Amazon is so quick and easy and it was really helpful to get the book within the same week I ordered the book. They really took the stress out of "when am I going to get my book, am I going to get it in time for class?"

4 out of 5 stars Estimating.......2005-08-15

This Book has a good amount of information. It would be very helpful for someone first starting out in the business.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for pricing - not just for interior decorators..........2006-05-12

This is a phenominal book for pricing and structure in any business. As an independent consultant one of the most difficult things when starting out is finding the right pricing structure. This book covers that as well as many suggestions on how to effectively organize and run a business. I have already recommended this book to my husband who is in Home Improvement and a friend who has a curtain business. I think it is so well written that it could be of value to many types of businesses small and large.

5 out of 5 stars Good Advice from Someone who's Been There Before.......2005-08-08

One of the hardest things to learn about interior design, or any other service industry is that the only thing you have to sell is your time. To do this in a profitable manner, you need two sets of skills.

The first is the one you know about. You've got to find customers, you've got to do the job they want done and you've go to make them happy. This is probably the job you've trained yourself to do through experience, through training, and through the basic aptitude that you had to get into that business in the first place.

The second job is harder. You've got to realize that you are a business manager. You need accounting (to keep your business partner the IRS happy). You need to develop a busines plan, budgeting, etc. You need to know how to prepare and send out bills and how to handle the money when it comes in. And the most critical of all, telling the customer what your effort is going to cost him.

In this book Mr. Williams gives an excellent introduction on how to do these critical things. He also includes enough war stories from his past to give you the understanding of how he learned these things.

I really enjoyed his page one story of starting his own company: sold his car so as to eliminate the payments, crammed his office into his bedroom, paid off all credit cards, in general reduced his expenses to a minimum. When I started I did almost exactly the same: I had a very tiny kind of dumpy house in not too good a neighborhood - but no payments. I had an ancient vehicle - but no payments. Like with him, I was profitable the first month, but you had best not bet on it.

Mr. Williams has been there, done that, walked the walk. His book makes excellent sense.

    Book Description

The world around us is celebrated in this new collection of thirty-eight original poems. Constance Levy's thoughtful words and clear images allow us to experience the small details of everyday things, like the lingering fragrance of mint after rubbing a mint leaf between your fingers, while at the same time offering up humor-touched insights into how ordinary things may be extraordinary. For example, wouldn't a round, lacy spiderweb make the perfect cloth for a manhole cover?

Illustrated with softly-rendered black-and-white drawings, these verses will stir young readers' imaginations and deepen their appreciation of the natural world.

        Book Description

For many years, faithful readers of America's favorite magazine regularly began each issue of Life by thumbing to the back first to see the Miscellany page, which was designed to close each issue with an amusing -- often outrageous -- photograph that would leave the reader laughing. Life Smiles Back is a hilarious collection of the best photographs from this popular back page. Now in paperback, it includes 232 black-and-white photos of children, animals, and people in unconventional situations and outlandish circumstances, mostly taken by Life renders and assembled by one of the magazine's most renowned editors.

A nostalgic collection of crazy snaps that whimsically recall the people, places, and events of the past, Life Smiles Back is an affectionate look at the zany side of our cultural history, guaranteed to make you smile.

2 out of 5 stars These great photos deserve better.......2007-06-02

The other reviewers are right about the humor and charm of these photos.

However, in LIFE magazine they were full page, and beautifully printed which enhanced their impact. In this book, they are often partial page (many one third page), some cropped - and worst of all, very badly reproduced: blurry and with poor black and white contrast. Shame on Simon and Schuster for poor quality work in this age of high quality printing. I recommend the fine and reasonably priced "Life Platinum Edition" instead, until a better version of this comes out.

4 out of 5 stars essentially an autobiography.......2002-05-22

it's not difficult to figure out the pseudonyms. eisner's decision to write his autobiography using code names for everyone (who is completely and obviously specific people), especially in this era of tell-all comics, is something of a head-scratcher. nevertheless, this is a thoroughly interesting and entertaining insight into Eisner's early career: his work at a printing press, his infamous encounter with the mafia and tijuana bibles, the decline of pulps and the rise of comic books, and the start of the Eisner/Iger production shop, with some nice cameos by Alex Toth (i think), Jack Kirby (i'm sure), and a writer who i don't recognize.

And, as ever, Eisner's storytelling, renderings, design, and particularly his breakdowns are excellent, regardless of any flaws in the story or, in Eisner's style, excessively emotive and kinetic characters.

The book is short, probably a 20-30 minute read the first time you go through it.

              -yakov.

5 out of 5 stars The dawn of comics' Golden Age.......2000-09-25

Will Eisner offers a revealing look at the early days of comics in this semi-autobiographical tale of a young comics artist's early shot at stardom and some of his stumbling blocks (such as the copyright suit he was involved in as a young man over a Superman rip-off he was paid to draw).

The humanity of all Eisner's books is in strong evidence here, as we meet the other artists in the workshop where our dreamer goes to work: people with flaws and strengths, weaknesses and dignity, who just may be based on Jack Kirby, Alex Toth, Joe Kubert, and others from the dawn of the medium. Names are changed to protect Eisner's cohorts, however.

If you're a fan of comics' Golden Age, this is a book very worth checking out. This could be the story of any creator who worked for National, Atlas, Dell, or any of the other publishing houses of the time and dreamed of striking out on his own.

This is the biography of Rosemond Tuve, a remarkable woman scholar, who began life on the prairies of South Dakota and rose to honor and acclaim in the United States and abroad. Professor "Roz" Tuve believed passionately in the power of education to transform the lives of men and women. Her story is told mainly in her own compelling voice through personal letters, diaries, and lectures that are witty, profound, and eminently readable. Tuve was an internationally recognized Renaissance scholar, lecturing extensively in the US, France and Germany throughout her lifetime. A tenured professor at Connecticut College, she was the first visiting professor to Harvard University in 1958, and to Princeton University in 1961. She received a Fulbright fellowship in 1957, and received a NATO fellowship in 1960 to Aarhus University in Denmark. An inspiring story of one of the leading educators of her time, a reading of Rosemond Tuve is a reflection on education and rewards of the life of the mind.

In missing the way things use to be, we often miss the value of the role the kitchen or dining room table has played within a family. Nothing can replace the memories of time spent at the table. "Come to the Table", reminds us of a time when things were simpler and family moments were more frequent. It shows the value of quality time and the little things we can do as family members to catch a glimpse of yesteryear.

The book gives real life examples of things that other families have done to bring life back into the family. Whether it is having a special plate and awarding it to the person of the day or a special display on the table, the book will change the way the reader looks at mealtime, homework, or game time around the table.

Come to the Table" is written for families, and those persons within the family, that want to increase the constructive time spent with family members. Even by implementing just one of the ideas within the book, the reader can capture time so it becomes a special moment. It also helps build self-confidence in some members of the family and allows all of them to look forward to the time spent around the table. This book should be required reading for all members of the household, but especially those responsible for each family member's welfare.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful home companion.......1999-11-12

I think Come to the Table shares a lot in common with other home companions -- like Martha Stewart's series and Simple Abundance -- but I loved this book even more for its warmth and the passion the author has for her subject. Many great ideas as well.

5 out of 5 stars Takes you home.......1999-11-06

There's something about your childhood home that never leaves you, and this book brings it all back, and helps you re-create a sense of love and generousity in your own home. I ordered this book for my sister, who just called to say she's already read it, loved it, and ordered a copy for our mom.

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas for the family.......1999-11-05

Doris has taken ideas from her own household and others to fill this book with ideas of bringing the family together around the table. This is her mission and a very valid one in today's world of two income families and rush, rush, rush. Although there are some good ideas, I found it to have a little too much fluff to up the page count of this small book. But I still believe in the book's intent and will be giving copies to my brother and friend for them to get ideas for raising my nephew and godson.

5 out of 5 stars An inspriational, fun and motivating book........1999-11-04

I enjoyed reading about all the ideas for making mealtimes more enjoyable and doable. We can all learn some things from the creative ways families of all shapes and sizes come to the table to enhance their family beliefs, values and traditions. It is a great "Slow Down" book, that will make you stop and think what am I doing to connect with my family, neighbors and friends. Great ideas to make those connections that last and last. This book shows there are is always something more we can do no matter what we are doing now to spend time with our families. Everyone needs to read this book to feel like we have not totally lost traditions and a family feeling. It was a great inspiration for me. I hope others will feel they can do some of the same ideas to help put families back together.

              Book Description

In the perfect match of subject and author, John S. D. Eisenhower, a noted military historian, presents the definitive account of the birth of the modern Amer- ican army and its decisive role in World War I. With the help of his wife Joanne, Eisenhower captures the viewpoints of the actual participants, blending a narrative told from the perspective of top officers with the stories of average soldiers. Drawing on diaries and memoirs, he brings each engagement to life, from the initial planning to the actual battlefield experiences of soldiers whose exploits at Belleau Woods and along the Meuse-Argonne would become the stuff of legend.

Along the way, he shows how General Pershing and other leaders -- including George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, George Patton, Billy Mitchell, and Peyton March -- transformed the American Expeditionary Force from a small, underequipped force into a strong, efficient, and effective army. Fast-paced, lively, and engaging, Yanks illuminates the central role of the American army in turning the tide in the biggest war the world had ever known.

              Download Description

Pulling readers down into the trenches with his intimate battlefield knowledge, John S. D. Eisenhower, a retired brigadier general, delivers the complete story of the United States' role in World War I, from the fortunate selection of John "Black Jack" Pershing as commanding general, to the astonishingly rapid buildup of troops, to America's decisive intervention. While the bulk of recent Great War accounts approach the conflict from British and French perspectives, Yanks focuses entirely on the often misrepresented story of the American Expeditionary Force which, in an incredible span of just 18 months, grew from an under-equipped band of 120,000 troops into a dominant force of four million. Eisenhower has mined little-known diaries and memoirs to illuminate an extraordinary cast of war heroes, both famous and unsung. With chapters focusing on legends like Pershing, George Patton, Douglas MacArthur, and Sergeant Alvin York, as well as the brave doughboys who fought on the front lines, this riveting work captures the birth of the modern Army, reasserting the true contributions of America in World War I.

2 out of 5 stars Superficial And Misleading.......2007-09-10

I not only have to agree with some of the other reviewer's contentions that the book is a superficial account of the U.S. effort in WW I, but I was surprised to see a book emerging at this late date STILL perpetuating the myth that the U.S. "won the war."

This distortion of history, I thought, had finally petered out in the 1960s. Yes, their Great War Army grew to 4,000,000 in just 18 months. But only a fraction of that saw any kind of action. In fact, after joining the war in March 1917, their first serious confrontation with the enemy [not counting the four black regiments which were forced to fight with the French] did not take place until June 1918. Over a year later! And in that engagement, to which point TOTAL U.S. casualties amounted to less than a hundred, a brigade of marines got their tails whipped in a futile action at Belleau Wood, which many thought was a totally unnecessary action.

Then, following a minor engagement at Fort Vaux in June 1918, their next significant engagement came when, in concert with a large French force, the 42nd [Rainbow] Division helped eliminate the Soissons Salient.

Meanwhile, as THE August war-ending offensive at Amiens was in full swing, with Haig's armies spearheaded by the Canadian and ANZAC Corps, two American Corps [seven divisions] - again with the French - attacked at St. Mihiel. And promptly ground to a halt in the most monumental traffic snarl-up of the war. Back of the lines, meanwhile, U.S. MPs were busy trying to round up over 100,000 deserters - a situation so serious that Pershing wanted to emulate the French and British and resort to the firing squad. He was talked out of it by then Navy Secretary Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

And that, with the exception of a minor victory at Côte de Châtillon by a brigade led by Douglas MacArthur in October, was really it insofar as U.S. ground action was concerned.

The U.S. also produced NO fighting aircraft, no armoured vehicles, and precious few big guns - relying totally instead on British and French equipment. And while their increasing numbers were certainly discouraging to the Germans, it would have been well into 1919 or even 1920 before the majority of the forces made any impact. Indeed, the Allied naval blockade, in tandem with the Flu Pandemic, did more to starve the Germans into submission than did any American ground action.

So, to suggest that they "won the war" is a gross mis-statement of fact. Search out and read, instead, S.R. Gibbons'/F. Morican's 1965 book World War One, Cyril Falls excellent 1959 volume The Great War, or D.J Goodspeed's The German Wars 1914-1945, published in 1977.

5 out of 5 stars World War 1 Thoroughly Considered.......2006-11-03

Brigadier General John S. D. Eisenhower's "Yanks" (2002 paperback) presents the story of America's participation in the First World War (WW1). This book narrates this epic clash by means of eyewitness accounts, official memoranda, and professional history. The book is well documented (with 26 pages of end notes, 5 pages of bibliography, 32 pages of black and white period photos and 16 maps).

Eisenhower presents history with candor and panache. He has literally toured WW1's battlefields, towns, and terrain. (As a boy he shook hands with the retired General Pershing- p. xiv). His experience as a US Army officer greatly enhances this book's analysis and presentation. "Yanks" speaks to the many Allied and Central Powers personalities (Wilhelm II, Wilson, Clemenceau, Lloyd George, Pershing, Haig, Petain, Foch, Hindenburg, Ludendorff, MacArthur, Marshall, and Patton, etc.) who waged WW1.

The Retired General also presents interesting vignettes from the western front. Readers learn of Patton's leg wound incurred while marching before his tanks into battle at Argonne, the Lost Battalion's rescue near the Muese River, MacArthur's "capture" by the US 1st Division (the "Big Red One"), and Sergeant York's dramatic single handed capture of 132 German on Oct. 8, 1918 (the month before Armistice).

Eisenhower shows how American participation in WW1 prepared the United States for a century of global warfare. Pershing's introduction of the Army Air Force, Patton's transfer from the general staff into the fledgling tank unit, Mitchell's inventive airplane application for bombing, and MacArthur's organizing and leading the Rainbow 42nd division, signaled the beginning of the modern American military.

This exciting book is recommended to all students of military history, the early 20th aficionado, army buffs, battle analysts, and those curious about WW1.

4 out of 5 stars Good Companion to Keegan.......2006-08-07

The first time I read this book, I did not enjoy it very much because I had only a passing familiarity with the events of World War I. But, I read it again after reading Keegan's "The First World War" and I found it to be a very good book about the US participation in World War I. It explains very well in an appropriate level of detail our role in that conflict, which Keegan does not because of his broad approach and our limited role. It has terrific tactical maps and explains battles quite well. It also focuses on the logistics buildup and identifies the role played in the war by Marshall, Patton, and others. I very much recommend the book.

              2 out of 5 stars oh boy.......2004-06-13

john, in your book you mention the "battle" of wounded knee. i'm pretty sure they call that infamous blot on the 7th cavalry, and on the american military in general, the "massacre" of wounded knee. and also, you didn't mention anything about the fact that the american military in WWI was horribly racist. the US army was so racist in fact that a crack outfit of black troops from harlem (harlem hellfighters ring a bell?) had to be outfitted in FRENCH GEAR before they were allowed to fight!!!

when i read a book, i like to get all sides of an issue...the good AND the bad. perhaps you'll keep these suggestions in mind for the 2nd printing.

              4 out of 5 stars A Missing Piece.......2003-07-23

While history can often make for dry reading material, John D. Eisenhower, does an admirable job of making the story of the United States Army in World War I readable. The author provides numerous details that flesh out the bare skeleton provided by other authors. He covers the buildup of forces, including a generous section on the logistics of moving to Europe and supplying it once it arrived. Eisenhower, also, offers valuable information and insights on the American Expeditionary Force, from senior figures like Pershing and Harbord to early views of Patton and MacArthur. Eisenhower's coverage of the battles and conflicts involving the US Army are not comprehensive, and you have to wonder if they were really meant to be, or meant as examples from which the reader can infer the details of other battles not covered. The coverage of the political/command battles provides another facet of the US involvement missed by many other books.

As any serious reader of history knows, you cannot get the whole story from any one book or author. In order to get a balanced and comprehensive view of history, the reader must look to multiple sources. This book makes an excellent companion to John Keegan's The First World War, providing a missing piece. It provides a source of balance and detail that Keegan neglects. However, it is not the be all and end all of the story; there are still plenty of missing pieces.

                          Book Description

For more than forty years NATO premised its defence on credible nuclear deterrence. Underwriting this deterrence was NATO's strategy and the nuclear weapons and command and control systems intended to make the strategy an operational reality. This book examines NATO's attempts between 1952 and 1990 to achieve the political and military control of nuclear weapons operations in a multinational organisation. By using case-studies of US, British, French and NATO nuclear weapons operations and empirical evidence from Cold War crises it provides an analysis of NATO's experience and offers insights for the present day.

This book is a master piece and explains how the development of weapon systems influenced societies. The multiple changes between expensive weapons of the few to cheap weapons of the many resulted in several different kind of societies. E.g. the availability of a lot of guns allowed the French Revolution to happen and supported a more democratic society. And the huge prices for armour, weapon and horse for middle age knights limited these controlling weapons to a few which resulted in the feudal system. And so on. Quigley again proves himself as the brightest mind in history writing. Unfortunatly he left the world some decades ago. I would love to see an analysis of him where we are now in our time. It seems we are in a very specialized time with specialized armies with a monopoly of these weapons to the state.

This book is out of print (I do not know why, since it is so important and great), but you can get it used for around $80.
