Book Description

Inspiration for interior designers today, this book showcases the work of a legendary interior decorator.

The career of Frances Adler Elkins (1888-1953), the sister of the renowned Chicago architect David Adler, spanned more than three decades. An avant-garde decorator and arbiter of taste, Elkins was celebrated for inspired designs that integrated various periods and styles, from country French to chinoiserie to art deco, and featured furnishings by such modern designers as Alberto Giacometti and Jean-Michel Frank. This book offers a tour of twenty-nine luxurious Elkins interiors, including several collaborations with Adler. Elkins's illustrious clientele extended from coast to coast and as far afield as Hawaii, including many private and public commissions in northern and southern California and the Midwest. Generously illustrated with 160 stunning color and black-and-white photographs, the book includes a list of selected clients and a visual inventory of selected furniture, fabrics, wallpapers, and accessories favored by Elkins. 100 color and 60 black-and-white illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars The first book devoted to her life and works.......2006-04-27

Frances Elkins was a legendary interior designer of the early 1900s whose works included major residential and public commissioned projects as well as fabrics, furniture and accessories. Her works were among the best of her times and she earned a reputation for her progressive outlook in the field - but Stephen M. Salny's FRANCES ELKINS INTERIOR DESIGN is the first book devoted to her life and works, gathering all of her achievements under one cover. Full-page displays of all her works from thirty years accompany biographical and artistic notes in a splendid, authoritative treatment by a researcher whose lifelong study of David Adler led inevitably to his sister Frances Elkins (who was Adler's collaborator on many commissions).

4 out of 5 stars Outstanding inspiration .......2005-10-12

As one of the earliest designers to mix classic and modern styles together, this book on Frances Elkins proves that she did so masterfully. She understood, as few designers did at the time, the relationship between the two was a shared use of wonderful materials and superior craftmanship. This book proves to be a great source of inspiration for successfully accomplishing the same mix today.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Style Alway In Vogue.......2005-09-19

This book portrays the superb taste of Frances Elkins through her long and successful career. Her bold use of color was unheard of when she began her trade in the early part of the twentieth century, but she did it with such style and finess that it was accepted. The use of fine antiques blended with contemporary furnishings was something else not done previously and set the trend for the "eclectic" style so popular ever since. First, working with her renowned architect brother, David Adler, in the Chicago area and then striking it on her own merit, she set a style and was one of the early women designers to become successful. The photographs and color interpritation in this book are excellent and in profusion. This book is a must for those interested in the interior design field, both past and present, because of her ageless style.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars a very odd book.......2007-03-30

This is an odd book, and I couldn't quite make sense of it when I got it. It does not really contain applicable advice like A.F.'s books, although it contains occasional detail not found in other places (such as the descriptions of various textiles). It overemphasizes certain styles, and in general it leaves the impression of being eccentric and a little dated. I am glad I purchased it, but if I had just been trying to figure how to actually construct a wearable wardrobe, I would regard it as a wasted purchase.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Book for the More Advanced Reader.......2006-04-25

This is a highly recommendable book that would be of greatest benefit for the more advanced reader with an interest in looking elegant in a suit. It is exceptionally well illustrated and is the sort of book that can help make or break you as far as your presentability goes. Needless to say, the style tips here are entirely of the classical sort that remain perfectly current despite the fact that this was published as long ago as 1990.

The main question for most readers would be whether to go for this or for 'Dressing the Man' by Allan Flusser. Fortunately, what you find here is perfectly complementary to Flusser, who admittedly has the advantage of starting from simpler basics and explaining these well to the beginner. A total novice may find the comprehensive review of different suit/blazer fabric types in this book to be a bit overwhelming, but for the reader who has grasped the basics this is the perfect book to help further his knowledge and taste. Whoever might have been left suspicious that Flusser may be keeping the finer points about suit styles a well guarded professional secret would probably find this book the logical next step to go on and further his knowledge and taste.

It should be kept in mind that this book concentrates exclusively on suits and blazers. Allan Flusser's `Dressing the Man' is far better when it comes to showing the reader how to coordinate the suit with tie, shirt and to some degree shoes - though even then Flusser emphasis is still on the suit. Arguably, the most encyclopaedic and balanced overview of all of the basics can be found in Bernhard Roetzel's book 'Gentleman'. However, more advanced readers who are familiar with these other authors will definitely want to add this book to their collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-05-24

Owned this book since it was first published but lost it in moving, which really stinks! I've had to buy a second-hand edition because it was a constant reference for me, especially when I tried ironing my shirts and pants but ended up ironing my hands.
This is truly a classic book and while its recommendations may not be exactly in line with modern American men's fashion, it will not disappoint in the long term.

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book.........2004-10-24

This book gave me excellent photos for reference. I use this book to put my outfits together, you dont have to buy all the expensive clothes... just mix and match vintage and new together for a sleek look.

4 out of 5 stars A very good book, intended for an "intermediate" audience........2002-07-12

For students of all things sartorial, who have progressed beyond the basic primers offered by Flusser, Boyer, and others, "The Elegant Man" is a must have. While the book is by no means perfect (none of the current available crop of men's clothing treatises are), it is the only widely available work that examines areas such as fabric type with anything besides a cursory glance. If you are an MBA grad still trying to figure out what suit to wear to an interview, or a "Dress for Success" type, then this probably isn't the book for you; however, if you have read Flusser and Boyer's books, and want to learn a little more, then I think you might enjoy the level of detail and more narrowly focused viewpoint provided by "The Elegant Man".

      5 out of 5 stars Cool book!.......2005-09-01

Of all the digital photography books that are out there -- and there are plenty -- I was fortunate to have happened upon this one. Most of the 50 projects in this book are top-quality and described in a very easy-to-follow manner. Scrapbooks, personal stationery with a watermark, fine art prints, greeting cards, photo calendar, recipe cards, slide shows, a professional portfolio -- they're all here and illustrated with superb photos. The book also contains a lot of information about editing photos digitally, sharing over the internet, etc. This book will keep me busy and creative for some time to come. (Would make a great gift!)

      Book Description

Praised for its widespread appeal and ability to entertain both children and adults alike, Shaman's Rain is the first in Image's ongoing collections of the Harvey and Eisner award winning Leave It To Chance material. Fourteen-year-old Chance Falconer has the occult in her blood. Her father, Lucas Falconer, is the supernatural defender of the Devil's Echo, an amazing city where the supernatural is an everyday occurrence. This is a family tradition handed down from one generation to the next and so Chance feels it's time for her training to begin. Is she up to the chance? Leave it to Chance.

5 out of 5 stars A comic to give people who don't read comics.......2005-02-15

I made a list of comics to give people who don't read comics to get them to read comics.

If you like Harry Potter then definately take a look at this one. James and Paul really outdid themselves this time (and saying that they did The Golden Age, that's saying a lot).

5 out of 5 stars Don't miss one of the best cmx out there.......2004-09-25

Winner of the 'Harvey' and two 'Eisners', "Leave it to Chance" is bar none my favorite children's comic book.

Robinson says it best in his introduction: "I get the idea for Chance in one of those white light, God-sent moments. Combine Nancy Drew with Kolchak the Night Stalker. Make it exciting enough for boys as well as girls. Have a cool supporting cast. Have a character all ages, young and old, will enjoy but which girls post-Archie and pre-Vertigo can maybe get into instead of drifting away and leaving the comic books to their brothers."

I have nothing against the "Go-Girl" comix, but she's too Saccharine for me. "Go-Girl" is the comix you buy because it's PG and for 'good girls'. Leave it to Chance is the comix you get for your child because you want to sneak it out of their room at night and argue with your husband about who gets to read it first.

The story is gripping, art is great, the good guys/ gals are cool and the bad guys/ gals are baaaaaad with a capital smirk. Add to that the city, Devil's Echo, rife with occult power, and you've got one great comic collection to read during banned book month.

My daughter used to say, "I want to be a doctor and drive a Saab." Now she says, "I want to be just like Chance and fight bad guys with a pet dragon and a flashlight!"

      A definite improvement, IMHO.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Excellent, helped me a lot.......2007-03-09

I am struggling with this issue because of someone close to me who wants to choose this lifestyle. This book was very very well written. Instead of condemnation it focuses on understanding. It helped me see myself and my wounds and how I contribute to others choices. It has a terrific Christian perspective, not the stereotypical judgmental attitude. It focuses on loving people in your life even if they make choices you don't like. It confronts our human nature that tends to reject people first, based on outward appearances instead of trying to understand their pain and heal that first, and then see who the real person is underneath. It gives a different perspective about what happens when we really love as Christ loves.

5 out of 5 stars The truth is hard sometimes, but needed!.......2005-01-22

As an ex-gay, I realize that this book will make Gay people angry. I wish that they could realise the truth presented in this book. Was it easy working out of the Gay lifestyle? NO! Was it worth the effort? YES! The cycle of disfunction had to stop somewhere. I'm glad the Lord saw fit to help me through this so that it wasn't passed on to my children. If I hadn't left the lifestyle (in the Lord's strength), I would have lost the wonderful family I have. They have accepted me back and for over ten years, I have been home where I can feel REAL love. Thank you for writing a book that is not afraid to go against the grain of this society!

5 out of 5 stars An Ounce of Prevention -- A Great Book!.......2004-05-22

This is a great book! I'm glad I bought this book and decided for myself (after reading some of the negative reviews) what the underlying causes of homosexuality could be. If you child is confused about his/her gender, this is a "must read." Not only did I gain insight on the probable causes of homosexuality but I felt it also was helpful in pointing out changes that needed to be made in our family life to help my child.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, some truth squeezes past gay propaganda.......2004-04-25

It is sad that so many individuals still buy into the long ago discredited "research" that supposedly "proves" that homosexuality is genetically based and therefore can't change. Unfortunately, gay activists continue to peddle bad, old research and deny the methodologically sound recent research. The new research (see Robert Spitzer), contradicts their position. Don Schmierer offers good insight and practical advice. If you're worried about your child's gender identity and their future, then read this book!

1 out of 5 stars Advice in futility.......2004-04-09

Given the obvious fact that people don't choose their sexual orientation, this book results in some downright silly suggestions. If you don't believe me on this, try the following thought experiment (sorry, it doesn't work for bisexual folks):

If you are straight, try to fantasize about someone of the same sex. Try your hardest to become homosexual just for a moment. If you are gay, try to become aroused by someone of the opposite sex. Both of you will, by now, have found you're not having much success. Alas, you've both failed to choose a different sexual orientation.

Returning to the book itself, the author's main suggestion is to repeatedly tell your children that people choose to be gay. For straight kids, this just ends up training them in intolerance (already quite likely fostered in an evangelical Christian household). For gay kids, this just results in bad relationships with their parents (and possibly years of therapy...).

The other advice the author suggests is a paranoid monitoring of gender role development of your children. This is where the book is at its most humorous. The essential suggestion is to be VERY wary of boys playing with dolls or girls playing too much softball.

Finally, I would offer an alternation suggestion. Thanks to folks like the author, our society can make life hard for gay folks. If your child appears to be gay, try to be nice to them; they need an understanding parent. Be the accepting, understanding parent. If you insist on being the dogmatic fundamentalist parent that the author asks you to be, the price you'll pay for it is the love of your child.

              Book Description

This stunning narrative marked the turning point in the writing career of Frederick Forsyth, who subsequently wrote The Dogs of War and The Day of the Jackal. Previously, Forsyth had been a journalist but his book on Biafra marked his remarkable debut as an author. Largely forgotten today, Biafra was a break-away province of Nigeria and the scene of a bloody civil war in the 1960s. Biafra's population largely consisted of the minority Ibo people, who were in revolt against Nigeria's majority Hausa and Fulani people. While the world community today looks with more favor on secessionist regimes, in the 1960s, both East and West united against Biafra, with only France providing assistance to the rebels.

Biafra's defeat was followed by a series of massacres by both official and mutinous Nigerian troops, further compounded by disease and famine. This disturbing work has been unavailable for 20 years, but now has come back into print when its relevance to a world of civil wars and ethnic cleansing is greater than ever. This narrative of Third World civil strife and Great Power duplicity is made even more compelling by the skills of a master storyteller.

2 out of 5 stars Bloody Story, Dry Read.......2006-06-30

It's hard imagining a holocaust going on at the same time as the Age of Aquarius, but that's what a young Frederick Forsyth presents in this, his first book and to date only non-fiction effort. It details the systematic massacre of the people of Biafra from 1967-1969 as they attempted, ultimately unsuccessfully, to break away from Nigeria. Originally published in 1969 as the conflict still raged, "The Biafra Story" was re-released in 2001 with a new afterward.

Forsyth's effort, however noble in intention, is a far cry from the pulse-pounding prose he soon perfected as a writer of spy fiction. As a longtime Forsyth fan who knew about the book from reading the author's bio in book flaps, I was definitely curious about it, and perhaps too expectant of excellence. After all, Forsyth not only had a compelling human drama here, he was on the ground as a journalist in Biafra and Nigeria for much of it. Expecting a real-life horror tale to read like a Forsyth thriller may be perverse, but it beats the bland recitation of dates and casualty numbers you get here.

The war, as Forsyth tells it, was largely between two tribes that found themselves together in the new country of Nigeria after the British gave them their sovereignty: the enlightened, educated, industrious Christianized Ibos and the shiftless, nasty Mecca-gazing Hausas, who persecuted the Ibos until they had enough and tried to carve out a country of their own, Biafra, on Nigeria's eastern coast.

Why the hatred from the Hausas? Forsyth ascribes it to rank jealousy, though a more logical explanation may lie in the fact when the Europeans came, the Hausas found themselves being shipped off to slavery while the Ibos prospered. That may be a generalization as unfair as Forsyth's, but a problem with "The Biafra Story" is you get little else but generalizations.

Forsyth presents what amounts to a prosecutorial screed, delivered in the ponderous style of a bewigged magistrate rather than a sweat-stained reporter in the field. "In war there are bound to be innocent victims, occasional excesses, here and there a wanton brutality conducted by soldiers of a low level," he writes. "But seldom has such a remarkable pattern of bestality [sic] been established over such a wide territory by such diverse army units."

It's hard to be objective with a slaughter like this, but Forsyth doesn't try. He presents the Biafran leader, Colonel Ojukwu, as a study in perfection, never mind his failures on the battlefield and on the diplomatic front. He goes after the then-government of his own Great Britain, who supported Nigeria unreservedly, at great length and at cost to the focus of the story. As he goes on in this vein a while, you wonder which he is more bent on: saving Biafra or bringing down the Harold Wilson regime in London?

Occasionally you get a glimmer of the real human face of the suffering of Biafra, as in a Time magazine account Forsyth quotes. But most of the time Forsyth gets bogged down writing about mercenary etiquette and the politics of airlifting food to starving Biafrans.

Perhaps the fact Forsyth was so close to the suffering made it hard for him to write objectively or dispassionately, which is a point for him as a person. But his raging against the machine grows tired and tinny, and the fact his cause is so just only makes one feel guilty getting bored reading it.

              5 out of 5 stars A touching book.......2005-06-01

I have read most of Forsyth's books and this is the first book where he treated a major conflict, especially one that is not of the western world. Overall it was very insightful and life DISCIPLES OF FORTUNE, KING LEOPOLD'S GHOST, SHAKE HANDS WITH THE DEVIL, it gives the reader the opportunity to understand African conflicts and the pattern of genocides that have taken place or taking place in the continent.

5 out of 5 stars The best chronicle of the suffering of the igbo people.......2003-02-28

Mr. Forsyth in this book became the voice of millions of suffering Biafrans whose sin was a determination to exist against all odds.

His analysis captured the brutality of the Nigerian soldiers while the rest of the world fell victim to the deceit of the pronouncements of the Commander of the Nigerian Armed Forces...General Yakubu Gowon.

5 out of 5 stars Unjustly forgotten classic of the Biafran War.......2002-05-02

Forsyth is known for his later works the "Day of the Jackal", "Odessa File" and "Dogs of War". This though is his first book and in many ways superior to the rest.

A non-fiction detailed description of the Biafran war, Forsyth pulls no punches describing the valiant but fruitless fight by the Ibo tribe to secede from Nigeria. Outnumbered, outgunned and out financed by the central government, the Ibo finally fell because of the support of the European powers for Nigeria.

Forsyth does a wonderful job in giving us a journalist eye view of the conflict which eventually became known more for the starvation of hundreds of thousands of Ibo. A long forgotten classic that has never been outdone by his later novels.

                    Book Description

The new edition of this classic history provides readers with an introduction to a period characterized by diversity and vitality alongside war, plague, revolution and famine. The book has been updated in the light of recent scholarship and includes a fully revised bibliography. The history of Europe between 1648 and 1688, often associated mostly with Louis XIV or the Age of the Baroque, was in fact disturbed by more cross-currents than at almost any other period. Disturbances, conflicts and uprisings along the remote frontiers, in Poland, in the Ukraine, in the Carpathians and in South-Eastern Europe, had repercussions in Vienna, Paris, Stockholm, and The Hague, affecting diplomacy across the world. Yet, at the same time, Europe was home to Newton and Huygens, Velázquez and Rembrandt, Pascal and Bossuet, Bernini and Racine. The diversity and vitality of European science and culture was all the more astonishing for the incessant ravages of war, plague and famine. The period which opens with a lull after the Thirty Years War and closes with another period of calm before the Wars of English and Spanish Succession, witnessed the flowering of Dutch prosperity, the rise of Muscovy, and the slow decline of Turkey and Venice. Almost everywhere the institution of monarchy, shaken at the outset, was by 1688 more strongly entrenched than ever.
