With Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles Sumner Greene and brother Henry Mather Greene defined the Arts & Crafts movement in America. From their offices in Pasadena, they created "Ultimate Bungalows," finely crafted homes characterized by the integration of architecture and interior design into a harmonious whole. Though both brothers had long and distinguished careers, the highpoint of their work came between 1903 and 1909, when they created such lasting masterpieces as The Gamble House in Pasadena, the Pratt House in Ojai, and the Thorsen House in Berkeley. Greene & Greene: Masterworks presents their work in this era in loving detail. Bruce Smith, who wrote the text for the book, is an authority on the Arts & Crafts movement, and is currently working on a biography of Charles Greene. Alexander Vertikoff's lush photography is the perfect accompaniment to the text, beautifully capturing the sweeping grandeur of each house as well as capturing the subtle details that make each Greene & Greene home a treasure. After an overview of the Arts & Crafts movement and a brief biography of the of the brothers, the book turns its attention to various details that characterized the brothers' style. In the section on entryways, for instance, they point out that
Rarely in a Greene and Greene house is there an abrupt division between inside and out. One enters by transitions, in stages. Brick steps my lead up from the garden to a porch. Shelter comes from a gabled overhang or sleeping porch that extends from above--one is covered but still able to feel the breeze. The pattern in the door's art glass evokes the natural world being left behind. Stepping inside, one still does not feel totally enclosed; across the entrance hall are doorways framing a vista of gardens beyond.
After exploring the details, they move on to the houses themselves, looking at 24 houses ranging from the modest, unassuming Brandt-Serrurier House in Altedena--a single story cottage built in 1905--to their greatest creation, The Gamble House in Pasadena. A short history and examination of details is given to each house, but by and large the houses are allowed to speak for themselves through dazzling photos. One of the most striking features of each house is the honey-colored light that fills each room as it pours through Japanese-inspired stained glass chandeliers and is reflected from rich mahogany and teak floors and furniture. To walk through a Greene & Greene house was to walk through a work of fine art. As Henry Greene said, "The idea was to eliminate everything unnecessary, to make the whole as direct and simple as possible, but always with the beautiful in mind as the first goal." As Greene & Greene: Masterworks clearly shows, they succeeded brilliantly. --Laszlo Simonyi

Book Description

In the first decades of the 20th century, Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene almost single-handedly defined the Arts and Crafts aesthetic in America as the architectural firm Greene & Greene. The only full-color survey of the firm's greatest works-including several newly restored to their original grandeur-Greene & Greene reveals the consummate artistry that ensured the brothers' place among the most brilliant of American architects. An in-depth tour of 25 magnificent homes, this book examines the creative evolution of their style. From the Gamble House in Pasadena, California whose director contributes the book's foreword to lesser-known gems throughout the state, Greene & Greene is a wonderful introduction to the brothers' work, and a warm homage to the charms of this refined domestic architecture.

Excellent! The best book on this subject I've ever seen...

Superb photoraphic illustration depicts the design genius of the Greene brothers. A comprehensive study of leading architects of the Arts & Crafts movement...a high compliment to the monumental craftsmanship of those who executed their designs.

4 out of 5 stars Craftsman style ideas.......2006-07-31

The book is beautiful, filled with both architectural ideas and furnishing ideas for items done in the craftsman style. I purchased the book for these ideas and was delighted with all the pictures. Some of the stonework illustrated is breathtaking in its beauty.

3 out of 5 stars Wait for a better quality edition !.......2006-03-01

We were very disappointed at the quality of printing, inferior paper stock, and lack of clarity in the photographs. At the "coffee table" price we were expecting much higher resolution in the color photographs and better quality paper.

5 out of 5 stars A more Graceful & Beautiful way of living.......2005-06-20

A great coffee table book about some of the most (to my mind) beautiful houses to come out of America. The photos alone are worth the price. You can also get some great ideas out of this book when you or "the Boss" decide to upgrade your digs.

              Book Description

Rising from sandbars on the Platte River with clarion calls, the sandhill crane (Grus canadensis) feels the urgency of spring migration. Elegant, noble, and spiritual, the sandhill crane is one of the most ancient of all birds. More than a half-million strong, flying in squadrons, these majestic creatures point northward to their Arctic and sub-Arctic breeding ranges. Theirs is an epic story of endurance through the ages.
With 153 stunning color photographs, On Ancient Wings presents sandhill cranes in their wild but increasingly compromised habitats today. Over the course of five years, Michael Forsberg documented the tall gray birds in habitats ranging from the Alaskan tundra, to the arid High Plains, from Cuban nature preserves to suburban backyards. With an eye for beauty and an uncommon persistence, the author documents the cranes’ challenges to adapt and survive in a rapidly changing natural world. Forsberg argues that humankind, for its own sake, should secure the cranes’ place in the future. On Ancient Wings intertwines the lives of cranes, people, and their common places to tell an ancient story at a time when sandhill cranes and their wetland and grassland habitats face daunting prospects.

              5 out of 5 stars Amazing photography........2005-12-20

Michael Forsberg has put together an amazing collection of photos and is a good writer as well. On Ancient Wings shows that it doesn't matter if you've been a pro photographer for 35 years or ten, all that matters is the emotional impact of the photography. There's certain well-known wildlife photographers out there who talk talk talk about how good they think they are and then there's photographers who just are. Forsberg falls in the latter category.

5 out of 5 stars A fine tribute marries natural history and visual display.......2005-06-07

At once a coffee table photo celebration and a natural history, any avid birder should consider photographer Michael Forsberg's On Ancient Wings: The Sandhill Cranes Of North America to be essential reading. The photos alone - full-page color spreads which are gorgeous in their all-season crane portraits - are worth repeated looks, covering cranes in environments from Alaska to Cuba. Then, there's the discourse surveying the natural history and lives of cranes, revealing their interactions with people and their attempts to adapt to a changing natural world. A fine tribute marries natural history and visual display, inviting audiences from natural history students to casual readers to partake.

5 out of 5 stars Extravagantly beautiful wildlife photography.......2005-04-16

A geo-photographic tribute to America's elusive but elegant cranes, along with their widely diverse habitats. Part journal and part photography book, the author takes the reader on journeys to Alaska (including a breathtaking view of cranes flying past Mt. McKinley) to Florida, from the Central Valley of California to the agricultural plains of Wisconsin. Between, readers are treated to wildlife vistas in the Teton and Yellowstone National Park region, Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in the desert of New Mexico, and the Platte River, which flows through the High Plains of Central Nebraska. Not just a travel documentary, this is the first book of a remarkable young artist, who will dazzle and delight readers with a poetry of cranes as observed through the lens of his camera.

5 out of 5 stars The detail is spectacular.......2005-08-16

While I don't think this is the best Batman storyline out there, let me explain the five rating. I like manga. The art is so fantastic, the characters so detailed. Asamiya is a fantastic artist. He draws the Joker so well. By giving the Joker a wild smile, yet with grimacing eyebrows, Asamiya portrays the character as a homocidal lunatic masquerading as some harmless clown. That is exactly what the Joker is. When Manga doesn't always connect with dialogue, the amazing thing is that the art itself is a form of characterization.

The eyes, the lines, the perspective, are all elements of drawing that can add an effective element to creating a character. In a comic book, you have visual aids to help you picture the character. In America, I think the dialogue and writing are superior; however in Japan there is little question that the art is superior. The characters, by their mere appearance on the page, lend some insight into what lies beneath the character in a metaphysical sense. That is how good the best manga art is.

However, the story itself is a very interesting, and creative one. Someone has the ability to recreate Batman villains at the genetic level. Due to the havoc it wreaks on the body, however, the "villain" mummifies within two or three days. Who is behind this strange development?

Someone who is utterly obsessed with Batman! Someone who takes the saying "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" to the next level: He wants to become Batman!

The art is just so well done, and the story is pretty darn good, too. If you want to experience Batman in a new, and interesting way, and you are a manga fan, I recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Why is everyone calling this a manga?.......2005-06-18

I'm reading a lot of these reviews here, and quite frankly, I don't get it. Do these people actually read the book, or just see the author's name?
Most manga is ridiculous, let's be honest, it's either for little kids, or a cartoon form of pornography, which, hey, is fine and all, but then comes a comic book like this. It isn't playful, and I don't remember any nudity. It looks, surprisingly, like a comic! A good one too, not a half-a$$ed comics that DC keeps putting out to make money. You can tell someone put time into this one, and it looks great. The only thing "manga" about it is the attention to detail.
Now other reviews complain about the plot line being outlandish. The joker, gator, penguin... face it Batman IS outlandish, get over it, if you want something more realistic read the news.
Plotline, a new drug trying to come into Gotham from Japan, the distributers of the drug have a more extreme version that transforms them into their dream (like batman's villians, and batman himself). These are NOT the actually villians. People who have claimed that Two-face has a different personality than previously... well yeah because it's not supposed to be the real thing.
Now I'm not an avid reader, I watched the cartoon when I was little, and I loved it (not the version that was done by the superman people), so if you want to call me an amateur in comics, go ahead (you freakin' nerd) but I know enough about the story to know that this works.
For further examples of GOOD batman comics, check out Frank Miller, and the collection Batman:Black and White.

                4 out of 5 stars Dragonball Batman...Just Kidding :).......2005-04-13

I first saw this at a Barnes and Noble here in town, and like a previous reviewer, got hooked by the story while perusing the pages. I enjoy manga and anime in general, but it was still a bit of a shock seeing the Dark Knight's world drawn like this. But once the story gets going, I didn't even notice the different style and readily accepted the presentation. Some have complained about the story, but I found it interesting enough to plow through the book in one night. Considering the length of the graphic novel, it was a bit of a feat. It is a fascinating international take on Bats, and if given a chance, could turn into a favorite for many fans.

2 out of 5 stars Lost in Translation.......2004-10-27

                Criteria to produce manga:
1:All foreigners (ie. non-Japanese) must be represented by drawing inordinately (almost comically) outsized noses.
2:There must be a scene involving the heroine in the shower/female nudity (possibly with "sensitive" areas obscured for those sensitive Western readers.)
3:America must be portrayed as a utopia of pop culture and global trendsetting.
4:America must be portrayed as an ultra-dangerous urban hell.
5:The story should have minimalist dialogue.
6:The story should contain soundeffects for even the most trivial of actions (eg.the shuffle of a skirt on a seat, the sound people make when they want to sneeze etc.)
7:You should,it seems, stay away from Western comic book heroes.
The problem with Kia Asamiya`s take on the Batman myth is that it just isn`t Batman. It looks wrong, for a start. While the author may cite Jeph Loeb as an influence ("The Long Halloween"),perhaps taking his cue of giving Bruce Wayne a rather Roman profile as a character trait,Asamiya turns it into a caricature.
While Two-Face may look like a fair approximation of the classic villain,he doesn`t sound like a stilted public-schoolboy/half baked philosopher in any of the stories I read before this.
While any new take on The Joker is more than welcome (stop using him as a miniscule cameo character,DC people!) he never spoke in the polite stiff and overly mannered tones of Asamiya before. And isn`t the point of The Joker that he`s supposed to be funny?Hideous, but nevertheless funny?
And that`s just it.Kia Asamiya wrote "Child of Dreams to introduce/reintroduce Japanese readers to Batman so it`s not the Batman we all know and love. What works in the West doesn`t always work in Asia and vice versa (just look at "Batman:Hong Kong").I should know,I live here.A fair apportion of blame must rest with the translator (who if his blurb is to be believed really should have done better).
Perhaps Mr.Asamiya thought he was being terribly clever and postmodern but at the end of the day this was a misjudged attempt that just doesn`t work.

3 out of 5 stars Batman the Manga.......2004-06-20

Kia Asamiya is perhaps one of the best Japanese illustrators out there. His legend is revered in his home country. With the great interest of manga in the American culture, it was only a matter of time before hot shot name would undertake the works of a classic character. Taking up Batman, however, was going to be a challenge.

The Bat is an extremely dark character that revels in the night. Though the Japanese don't have a problem with dark themes in the likes of Vampire Hunter D or even Akira, seeing crisp, clear art depict that darkness was going to be a challenge. Asamiya, howver, succeeds in creating and weaving an intricate, though maybe superficial at times, story that pits the Bat with a crazed fan(atic). The story moves from Gotham all the way to Japan and showcases most of Batman's rogue gallery. Though, unlike the great detaila nd plot of the Long Holloween, the characters are not really into the plot of the story and don't play a major role to advance the story. The most lost potential happens when the Joker meets up Batman to help him find the major villain of the story. That scene just fizzles and does not peak much interest.

Like most manga, the story is very laid down with no major surprises. Unlike Ameican written or themed comic concepts, manga does not challenge the reader. A great read and a nice story, though not a major contributor to the great Bat mythos.

The positive interaction between student and teacher begins with a caring spirit on the part of the educator. Vito Perrone inspires the reader with reflections by Covello who stresses the importance of community in any educational system. If you have the heart, you are well on your way to inspiring excellence in your students. This book gives some good illustrations that will tug at your own heart and give you much food for thought.

                    Book Description

The first comprehensive account in English of how the Portuguese Armed Forces prepared for and conducted a distant counterinsurgency campaign in its African possessions with very limited resources, choosing to stay and fight despite the small odds for success. The Portuguese military crafted its doctrine and implemented it to match the guerrilla strategy of protracted war, and in doing so, followed the lessons gleaned from the British and French experiences in small wars. The Portuguese approach to the conflict was distinct in that it sought to combine the two-pronged national strategy of containing the cost of the war and of spreading the burden to the colonies with the solution on the battlefield. It describes how Portugal defined and analyzed its insurgency problem in light of the available knowledge on counterinsurgency, how it developed its military policies and doctrines in this context, and how it applied them in the African colonial environment. The uniqueness of its approach is highlighted through a thematic military analysis of the Portuguese effort and a comparison with the experiences of other governments fighting similar contemporaneous wars.

                      Book Description

This module invites students to explore the historiography and sources of the Atlantic Basin during the age of exploration. Once a nearly impassable barrier, Columbus and subsequent explorers punctured the veil of ignorance and uncertainty cloaking the Atlantic. In doing so, they raised the curtain on a new, dramatic chapter of cross-cultural encounters whose cultural, political, economic, and biological exchanges transformed the modern world.

                        Book Description

In Relevance in Argumentation, author Douglas Walton presents a new method for critically evaluating arguments for relevance. This method enables a critic to judge whether a move can be said to be relevant or irrelevant, and is based on case studies of argumentation in which an argument, or part of an argument, has been criticized as irrelevant. Walton's method is based on a new theory of relevance that incorporates techniques of argumentation theory, logic, and artificial intelligence.

The work uses a case-study approach with numerous examples of controversial arguments, strategies of attack in argumentation, and fallacies. Walton reviews ordinary cases of irrelevance in argumentation, and uses them as a basis to advance and develop his new theory of irrelevance and relevance. The volume also presents a clear account of the technical problems in the previous attempts to define relevance, including an analysis of formal systems of relevance logic and an explanation of the Grecian notion of conversational relevance.

This volume is intended for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in those fields using argumentation theory--especially philosophy, linguistics, cognitive science and communication studies, in addition to argumentation. The work also has practical use, as it applies theory directly to familiar examples of argumentation in daily and professional life. With a clear and comprehensive method for determining relevance and irrelevance, it can be convincingly applied to highly significant practical problems about relevance, including those in legal and political argumentation.
