Book Description

Groundswell: Constructing the Contemporary Landscape presents 23 projects that reveal the surge of creativity and discussion surrounding the designed landscape in a broad, principally urban, international context. In the last 20 years, many significant new public spaces have been created for sites that have been reclaimed from conflict, environmental degradation, and abandonment. The projects, found throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, were selected for their outstanding design, and for their variety of contexts, materials, scale, and types of spaces. This fully illustrated volume includes an essay by Peter Reed, Curator in the Department of Architecture and Design at The Museum of Modern Art, that demonstrates how these innovative projects expand the definition of the modernist landscape while responding to a variety of conditions such as program, social function, and the transformation and reclamation previously industrial areas. The essay is followed by a full-color plate section featuring the selected projects. Catalogue entries for each project provide a succinct description of the site, its transformation, and design concepts illustrated by photographs, drawings, and models.

5 out of 5 stars Interpretations of the ground plane.......2007-01-16

The book is filled with a series of exceptional projects in dealing with the transition between the interior and exterior space and the multiple ways of ground sculpturing. The projects are displayed with photographs, renderings, and drawings which further explain plan and section design. The book is inspirational and a great reference material.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting Urban Projects.......2006-07-13

A great collection of different planning straegies. Provides unique and refreshing solutions for designing different urban hardscapes, mostly in the U.S. and Europe. It is also well put together and well thought out.

    Book Description

In this stunning new collection of male nude photography, Tom Bianchi pays tribute to what has become the most famous setting in his highly acclaimed body of work-The Outpost Pool. But the pool is more than a mere backdrop, for as Bianchi says, "We have made 'art,' we have memorialized the handsomeness of our friends, and we have enjoyed the camaraderie of one another. In this place we have realized a potential of our tribe today, making the story of our world as we like it." This extraordinary volume is a record of that story

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Size Matters.......2005-09-18

Nothing that Tom Bianch has ever done in the way of male erotic photography can disappoint, although the size of this collection was discouraging. When the dust cover has the best two photos from the entire book, one must struggle to appreciate the less-than-postcard size photos from this mini-collection of Bianchi's works. Its 64 pages of black and white photos (not the best of Bianchi's total collection) remain a treat to the eyes, nonetheless!

3 out of 5 stars REALLY REALLY small.......2004-10-21

First thing I want to say is that I was deceived by the picture on Amazon. Because this was a book of photography, I imagined it would contain prints of a reasonable size. Wrong! Instead of buying art, I feel like I have a dime novel to keep in my nightstand. True, the photo's inside are wonderful. Just hope you're not far-sighted.

4 out of 5 stars Tom is the man, appreciate the legend........2001-02-05

This may be a small binding for a book but it is as big as the Grand Canyon with inspiration. Tom has the talent that demands respect and glamor. Tom we love ya.

    4 out of 5 stars Well Done!.......2000-01-12

Bianchi doesn't dissapoint in this small but explicit collection of photographs.

              Book Description

By day she was a respectable schoolteacher named Alice Freeman. By night she was The Empire's crusading journalist, Faith Fenton, who dared to challenge the conventions and values of the Victorian era. Jill Downie has uncovered the secret of Alice/Faith, the unconventional daughter of a shopkeeper who took on another identity to penetrate the closed, very male world of journalism. As columnist Faith moved with ease through society, equally at home with the rich and powerful and the less fortunate - from Lady Aberdeen, wife of the Governor- General, to the working mothers of Toronto's slums. She was everywhere, attending costume balls, visiting an aging Sir John A. Macdonald, interviewing the fiery suffragette Susan B. Anthony, covering sensational murder trials. At the height of the Klondike gold rush she reinvented herself once again heading for Dawson City as the special correspondent of The Globe. And there she met and married the love of her life.

A Passionate Pen is a stylish, richly documented portrait of turn-of-the-century Canada. Meticulously researched and filled with the spirit of the times, it brings alive a witty and intelligent woman whose passionate concerns are as relevant today as they were a hundred years ago.

"We must first understand others before we can care about them and we must care about them before we can love them. In this book, J. David Smith takes us on a fascinating journey from understanding to caring to love."

Do children and adults with disabilities enrich our lives? Far more than most people imagine.

In Search of Better Angels is a testament to the value of individuals with disabilities and the value that society could derive from being more welcoming to and inclusive of them. The reward is the powerful humanizing influence that they can have on others—even some of the most hardened people among us.

Colorful, real-life examples illustrate how a disability can be a valuable human attribute, a powerful source of compassion from which everyone can benefit.

What are the challenges that face us as we strive for a more inclusive society? What are the values that should guide us in our efforts? Smith approaches these questions by examining his own experience and other unique perspectives:

The result is a compelling case for understanding and celebrating human diversity. Smith asks us to summon the "better angels" of our character and affirm our commitment to a society based on equality and democracy.

                      Book Description

The 15th century was a time of change for knighthood. Knights no longer fought for their lords in return for land, since the feudal summons had long before given way to a system of contracts. Moreover, many knights now preferred the role of landowner, man-about-town or parliamentary representative. However, this was also the age of the knight in plate armour, of the battle of Agincourt and the conquests of Henry V, and of the Wars of the Roses, the bloody internecine struggle that tore medieval England apart. In this title Christopher Gravett describes the life of a 15th century knight, his equipment and experiences from his earliest days as a squire through to his experiences on the battlefields of England and France.

                        Book Description

The 14th-century knight lived in a century of change, in terms of both recruitment methods and the appearance of fighting men. This book describes all aspects of the knight's life, including his training in the castle yard and the hard knocks of tournaments. The knight's daily routine on campaign is explored along with the role of mercenary knights, the motivation of knights in the field and the influence of chivalry. The book is beautifully illustrated with eight colour plates by Graham Turner covering all aspects of knighthood in this period and also includes photographs of rare surviving contemporary pieces of armour.

                          Book Description

Professor Minnis argues that the paganism in Troilus and Criseyde and The Knight's Taleis not simply a backdrop but must be central to our understanding of the texts. Chaucer's two great pagan poems, l>Troilus and Criseyde/l> and l>The Knight's Tale/l>, belong to the literary genre known as the `romance of antiquity' (which first appeard in the mid 12th century), in which the ancient pagan world is shown on its own terms, without the blatant Christian bias against paganism characteristic of works like the l>Chanson de Roland/l>, where the writer is concerned with present-day rather than classical forms of paganism. Chaucer's attitudes to antiquity were influenced, but not determined, by those found in the compilations, commentaries, mythographies and history books which we know that he knew. These sources illuminate the manner in which he transformed Boccaccio. Much modern criticism has concentrated on the medieval veneer of manners and fashions which are ascribed to the heathen protagonists of l>Troilus/l> and l>The Knight's Tale/l>; Dr Minnis examines the other side of the coin, Chaucer's historical interest in cultures very different from his own. The paganism in these poems is not mere background and setting, but an essential part of their overall meaning.

                            Book Description

This is a detailed investigation of Chaucer’s poetics in Troilus and Criseyde and the Knight’s Tale in relation to an important continental narrative tradition. It is the first such wide-ranging study since Charles Muscatine’s seminal Chaucer and the French Tradition and the first book to argue in detail that Chaucer’s poems, Boccaccio’s Filostrato and Teseida and the twelfth-century French romans antiques participate in a distinct formal tradition within the protean field of medieval romance. By close examination of the formal and ethical designs of each poem, Barbara Nolan explores both the compositional practices shared by all of the poets she discusses, and their calculated differences from each other. Her analysis culminates in a full examination of Chaucer’s richly original response to the continental verse narratives from which he borrowed. No other study offers so full and careful a delineation of the compositional features that distinguish the roman antique from other forms of romance in the Middle Ages.

The scope of this book is the development (1930-35) and subsequent fight (1935-39) of the German Boy Scouts (Buendische-Pfadfinder-Jugend) movement against Nazism in Berlin, Germany. The author recounts his experience in fighting Hitler's dictatorship and his duty to promote the Scout's main virtue-the development of exceptional citizenship characteristics. Ihle encourages the reader to participate more in the current political scene, even if it means simply registering to vote.

                                Book Description

Spiritual Information is a collection of one hundred essays that explore a portion of the vast interdisciplinary approaches to the study of science and religion. Individually and together, the essays show how the study of ourselves, our planet, and the universe helps us understand our place as spiritual beings within God's universe. The book is a tribute to Sir John Templeton and his pioneering commitment toward new research that results in "one hundredfold more spiritual information than humankind has ever possessed before." It begins with essays that reflect on Sir John's principal domains of interest and expertise: free-enterprisebased finance and accelerating spiritual progress. Themes of the sections are: Science-Religion Dialogue; Cosmology, Physics, and Astronomy; Mathematics, Musicology, and Speculation; Biological Evolution—the Human Being; Social Evolution—the Human Mind and Heart; Religion and Health; The Nature of the Divine; Theology and Philosophy; Faith Traditions. "Sir John's leadership has enabled us to edge evercloser to the frontier where knowledge meets wisdom at the threshold of `ultimate reality,'" notes the editor in the preface to this volume. As Spiritual Information presents an overview of how far we have come in the science and religion dialogue, it also opens windows to the vast possibilities for additional research and further advances in spiritual information.

This book has an amazing collection of essays that touch on religion and science. My favorites are those by Charles Harper, Jr. (who discusses how much humans can ever know) and by Freeman Dyson (who discusses literature as a vehicle for expanding our minds).
