Book Description
Sarah Susanka's first three books have launched a revolution in residential architecture with the message that it's not the size of the house that matters, but the quality of its design and details. Her books strike a chord in homeowners, who are finding that bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. Now, in Home by Design, Susanka presents 30 design concepts that can transform any house into a welcoming home filled with character, beauty, and comfort. Opening readers' eyes to what's possible, she makes spatial design accessible to the layperson. Each of the design concepts here, from entryways to public/private space to window positioning, is illustrated with examples from houses by leading architects. Homeowners will learn how to assess their environment to discover what works or doesn't, and find the necessary tools to create the homes they really want.

Home By Design: Transforming your House into Home.......2007-01-21
This is a great book. Lots of great ideas with visuals to help you understand the effects of doing something one way or another. Lots of good ideas that can be used in any home. I open it up on a daily basis and keep finding more great ideas.
great book to have.......2007-01-12
Susanka has published many books but I think this is the best. A lot of pictures and great tips. If you are planning to remodel or build your own home, I would recommend this book, regardless of the house size.
Outstanding.......2007-01-10
Another great book by Susanka. She has the ability to write in layman's terms so that you completely understand the concepts. She has really good before and after illustrations in this book to show how various designs can enhance and beautify your remodeled space. This book is helping me to better explain to the architect we are hiring what our design needs are.
Excellent content, Repetitious Photographs.......2006-08-17
As a non-designer, this is an excellent design book in that it explains how we can make changes to our homes (or use this as a tool during initial home design prior to construction) to make the home more cohesive, more welcoming, more comfy. The concepts are well described; the biggest weakness of the book is its photography. The small photographs did not bother me per se, but the repetition of photographs really took away from the book. The same photographs are used multiple times to highlight different aspects in different chapters. The homes are primarily architecturally gorgeous, and they are wonderful to look at, but I would like to see these concepts described with less elaborate homes and a wider variety of homes. Most of these have a lot of wood, beautiful views, and lots of investment in design features. Using the same photograph more than once is unnecessary, it would be more helpful to show another home to explore the concept. That said, the content is sufficient to recommend this book to others.

Not what I was looking for...........2004-08-27
this book just didn't have any information in it that I didn't already have.
Decorating made Easy.......2001-06-20
If you have very little money, little time, little or no decorating talent, and the desire to make your apartment look great, this book is for you! This is the first decorating book I picked up where ALL of the ideas in this book are paractical.
How to Decorate helped me establish a budget and "scheme" for apartment. Following the author's guidelines will help you do the same. So when you go shopping for instance, you will not impulse buy and end up with furniture you don't really want.
The author also makes great suggestions on discount shopping stores, space and style consideration, cheapo ways to change the look of furniture, and how to "size up an apartment" during your initial apartment hunting period.
If your shopping/moving budget is $500 or less, this book is a must have!!
how to decorate and furnish your apartment on a budget.......2001-06-19
This book is for those of us with little money, little time and very little or no decorating skills/creativity. If you are moving into an apartment (like me) and have a desire to create a pleasant living space, this book is definetly for you.
I like the book because it is very practical and it helped me focus on what I wanted my apartment to look like. It helped me establish a budget and a "look" for the apartment, so now, when I go shopping, I know exactly how much I have to spend, what I need and whether or not something will match or look good, etc.
The author also gives tips on where to find stuff on at a discounted rate and her sample budgets made me remember to buy the little stuff you tend to forget about, like a small trash can for the kitchen.
The best part about all of this is that the entire process, budgeting and creating a scheme only took a few hours to create.

Book Description
Pope John Paul II: A Life in Pictures is the most extensiveand the most beautifully producedvisual diary ever compiled of Karol Józef Wojtyla, who became one of the most respected religious figures and world leaders of the twentieth century. From his days growing up in the small town of Wadowice, Poland, through his extensive travels around the Christian and non-Christian world to his recent passing, mourned by the faithful worldwide, this astounding collection bears witness to the transformation of Wojtyla from a small child in Poland to the Bishop of Rome, the vicar of Jesus Christ, the patriarch of the WestPope John Paul II. From his earliest years, we travel alongside Wojtyla from Wadowice with his humble parents to Kraków as an energetic student of literature and philosophy, an actor in an experimental theater troupe, and a poet participating in readings and discussion groups. After World War II, during which he began his religious training in an underground seminary, we watch as Wojtyla was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1946. Pope John Paul II then follows along on the path of his faith as he becomes a chaplain to university students, an archbishop, a cardinal, and finally, the pope. In 1978 Wojtyla, taking the name John Paul II, became the first non-Italian pope since the sixteenth century and the youngest pope in 132 years. Dedicated to Catholics the world over, John Paul II was the most-traveled pope in history, making a point to nurture his flock wherever they could be found. Pope John Paul II follows his extensive trips around the worldincluding the first papal visit to Auschwitz, with Fidel Castro on his historic tour of Cuba in 1996, and among throngs of admirers throughout Europe and the United States. Seen at the pulpit delivering sermons that gave hope to the destitute with his support of human rights, Pope John Paul II struck fear in the powerful as he condemned autocracies from the U.S.S.R. to Chile. We are also given lesser known but equally powerful moments, such as his visit to forgive the imprisoned Mehmet Ali Agca, who shot him in 1981, and his arrival in Sudan at age seventy-three as he kissed the ground at the Khartoum airport. A special tribute to a life and faith that reached around the world, Pope John Paul II culminates in his passing and the mourning of hundreds of millions around the globe from all faiths and political systems. The most comprehensive and superbly reproduced collection of photographs of the Supreme Pontiff ever compiled, Pope John Paul II provides visual testimony to his life as one of the most admired and revered men in the world.

Interesting.......2007-01-08
I bought this as a gift for my grandmother. She really liked it. I didn't get a chance to read through the whole thing but it's a very thick hardcover book. Lots of pictures and lots of information and facts about his life. Great tribute! These types of books are always pricey but the pictures are worth it!

Customer Reviews:
Movie Manga.......2007-08-22
A fun picture retelling of the film with a "manga" feel. We have a copy of the same thing in the Japanese (purchased at the Ghibli Museum), so it was fun to get a version that our young readers could read on their own. A fairly easy read for middle readers. A nice, concise retelling without cumbersome details. The manga-like character introduction at the beginning was a fun touch.
If your kid likes the movie, he'll love the book too.......2007-02-21
Our toddler has had a Kiki obsession ever since we showed him the movie. We bought him this book and the Totoro book and he loves both - so much that we no longer watch the movies. The books are long and filled with lots of pictures from the movies. They are broken into chapters so you can read one or two before bedtime. You pretty much need to love the movies before reading the books. The stories in the books are only highlights of the movies but still do a good job of capturing the interesting moments.

Book Description
The first section of this book explains the term Âpinch as the author attempts to bring insight to her cultural ancestry with its many traditions, ways of communications, and family values, that provide and enrich that essential ingredient for a life that is filled with love.
The second portion of this book gives description to the authorÂ's place of birth, hometown, neighborhood friends, and time spent with parents and grandparents. Lifestyles and occupations of former generations are discussed, along with their goals, philosophies, and ways for survival. The author takes us from her early childhood through the days of her becoming a married woman, sharing with her husband the dream of coming to America. Recollections of the authorÂ's children being born in America are joy gully noted, along with her dual citizenship. Details are given for preparation of monthly Italian celebrations, both holiday and religious events. Cherished memories and stories regarding husband, children, grandchildren, daughters-in-law, relatives, teachers and neighbors are vividly noted.
In the last part of this book the author discusses her return trip to Italy for a documentary vacation, her comparison of the Italy she once knew, and the changes that have occurred over the passing years. The Author describes the joys of her Italian ancestry, along with her enduring love for America. The future for both her children and grandchildren are warmly expressed, including her hopes and wishes for her family.
The book ends with a special section of family-shared recipes. The authors closing summary brings meaning and explanation to the bookÂ's title, and her life as a woman proud to be both Italian and American.
Customer Reviews:
Ambitious vanity project to preserve cultural and culinary traditions.......2006-11-04
"Pinch" is an ambitious project to record memories for posterity and for that valiant effort Maria Sciortino deserves the highest praise both for her good intentions and for having accomplished her goal. Few of our elders have tried as valiantly to preserve their cultural and culinary heritage for posterity. This is a project that I wish my mother and aunts had done.
Unfortunately, the book could use some serious professional editing and art direction to rescue it from merely being a very personal vanity project. Photos are extremely dark and grainy and do nothing to illuminate the material. The recipes are very simple, maybe too simple. Directions resemble those you may find in your mother's recipe file, that is, sparse and lacking any instructional insight and conventions of organization.
An automated program was used resulting in layout more appropriate to scientific publishing than a memory-cookbook; chapters are arranged with an outline numbering system reminiscent of a government document, hardly lending any warmth. There is no artistic sensibility that ties the book together.
While this book has its charming homemade quality, the low production values add up to a disappointing presentation and not enough recipes that we haven't seen before. A really good editor and designer could have made this book into a much nicer professional package. For a homespun family project, Maria Sciortino gets very high marks, but don't expect to find this on any bestseller list.

Deeper is a record of John Seabrook's wide-eyed romance, and eventual disillusionment, with the brave new world of cyberspace. Unlike most books on the topic, this one features little in the way of pontification: Seabrook is too busy absorbing the disappointments of online life, such as his first flame (which became the subject of a New Yorker article) and an abortive attempt at cybersex. This sane, funny, and charming book really does capture the lighter-than-air feeling one gets during an initial brush with new technology--and the morning-after feeling that follows.
Book Description
With a winning combination of bemusement, frustration, and affection, John Seabrook takes us along on his personal journey from "newbie" to old hand in cyberspace. Along the way, he sheds light on the history of the Internet and how it evolved from a geeky hobby into an important part of mainstream popular culture, and in engaging, often hilarious descriptions he de mystifies this new, ever-expanding world. For anyone thinking about getting on-line, for computer hacks interested in comparing notes, and even for nodrivers on the information highway, Deeper is a one-of-a-kind guidebook, at once informative, evocative, and beautifully written.
Customer Reviews:
dated but descriptive.......2002-08-16
As might be expected, the book is very dated now. I was also on the Internet in 1993 and 1994 and don't regard myself as a pioneer of any sort. I did find Seabrook's description of online life accurate and especially the arc of a long-term presence online .. from euphoria and enthrallment to disillusion and disgust finally arriving at a place of balance.
What a cover and it's dull but original for biography.......2002-04-19
Man and computer, but this guy is not my idea of a nice person. He has fun faking his identity in a chat. What happened to being honest and not lying to people? He talks about Western pioneer spirit ya well we have heard that by now. Must be the WELL because there seems to be a unity in writers from there. And yes their story dominates too much of the writing about the net. Sorry but I like community I am not a libertarian, thank you very much. It was an interesting read my own grips about the WELL aside. But then we could all write something like this but as a story of one person's personal views on the computer explosion in America and the media business it has merit. Since Bill Gates seems to be known for his relation to computers I guess this writer got to know his subject. I didn't finish it but it has some personality.
A simple de-flamatory philippic.......2002-02-04
I liked it a lot. Why do some reviewers characterize an author as narcisisstic when he talks about himself once in a while? Give me a break. Well rounded perspective of one man's introduction to the cyberworld.
Narcissism and sloppiness.......2000-06-05
Seabrook opens his story by describing the login screen to the WELL, an online conferencing system. He quotes it as saying "you are your words" and, based on this, proceeds to draw a variety of conclusions about the WELL and the online world. Which might be fine, except that the login screen to the WELL reads "You own your words." Big difference there. You'd think a writer for the New Yorker could, when recounting a quote that sets the tone for his book, get the quote right. The book heads steadily downhill from there. Seabrook makes it all about himself. That isn't a bad thing per se, but it doesn't work here. Seabrook's personal journey is not interesting, and he has very little original or interesting to say about the medium. I suppose this book could be useful as an object lesson about the dangers of journalistic narcissism, but that's about it.
In love with the sound of his own voice........1998-08-07
I had read excerpts of this in The New Yorker, where Seabrook is a staff writer, and was interested in seeing the finished product. Reading it bit by bit over time was one thing; reading it all at once was another. John Seabrook is really infatuated with himself. We do not need to know that he went to boarding school and then Princeton, yet he repeats this information again and again. We do not need to know how smart and wonderful he "knows" he is -- but since we're in his head, we're stuck with him. If he is indeed so smart and wonderful, why does he need to hire someone to build a homepage for him? He's insufferable, and readers can do better elsewhere.
