Book Description

Building on the enormous success of the original Shelter, Lloyd Kahn continues his odyssey of finding and exploring the most magnificent and unusual hand-built houses in existence. Among the intriguing domiciles described in Home Work are a Japanese-style stilt house accessible only by a cable across a river; a stone house in a South African valley whose roof serves as a baboon trampoline; multi-level treehouses on the South China Sea; and a bottle house in the Nevada desert. Over 1,500 photos illustrate various innovative architectural styles and natural building materials that have gained popularity in the last two decades such as cob, papercrete, bamboo, adobe, strawbale, timber framing, and earthbags.

5 out of 5 stars a true gem.......2007-07-25

this book is even better then the other books by Lloyd Kahn, and i didnt think that was possible. The photographs are outstanding, the text interesting, informative, and captures thoughts, people, homes and places of times past, present and some that look futuristic! This book is for anyone who has a passion for architecture, and culture. a great coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars So much more than a coffee-table book.......2007-02-24

This book is absolutely stunning. I spent hours poring over the pictures. It's mostly pictures of creative, unique houses people have built, with a few stories about builders' experiences and techniques.
It will put into perspective the amount to which we have limited ourselves when it comes to traditional housing. It shows how a house is not just shelter, but art, expression, and passion as well.
This will inspire you!

5 out of 5 stars Great bathroom fodder.......2007-01-16

This book has been sitting on my toilet for about a month. its one of those. you can reread it and look at those photos many times before you get tired of it. plus this book gives you many links to other sources or information. which really is its strongest point. you look, find a style you like, and then can look up more books on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars inspiration spring !.......2006-11-06

many pictures are bad but this book is still highly commendable for its great inspiration source ! I'm planing a yurt type building ! not easy with constructions'rules ! built with naturals materials, it will be a powerful places (the higher l've ever draw- I'm doing dowsing too), to get a strong health ; a sacred place as all dwellings should be ! I will send pictures to the writers as soon as possible !

5 out of 5 stars An expertly written, informative, and rather unique compendium of a seemingly limitless arrangement of houses .......2006-04-10

Home Work: Handbuilt Shelter by long-term publicist and experienced house-builder Lloyd Kahn is an expertly written, informative, and rather unique compendium of a seemingly limitless arrangement of houses that have been "handcrafted" one at a time by their builders. Introducing the reader to Builders; Homes; Natural Materials; Photographers; Fantasy; Trips; On The Road; Living Lightly; Barns; Old Buildings; and enhanced with a reflective "Moreover" commentary, a bibliographic reference for other thematically appropriate books, as well as an Appendix, Home Work maps an intricate and detailed selection of every imaginative, creative, fun, innovative, indigenous, traveling, and eclectic house drawn from diverse cultures ranging from Nova Scotia to Mongolia. Home Work: Handbuilt Shelter is so very highly recommended to architectural students and non-specialist general readers, particularly those with an interest in building their own unique and memorable home or shelter.

            Product Description

This adventure is designed for and fully compatible with the Castles & Crusades Role Playing Game and the Castle Zagyg: Yggsburgh adventure and campaign setting.

Long before the Archmagi Zagyg moved into the deeps of the great castle that came to bare his name, he took up his dwelling in a house north of the fledgling town of Yggsburgh. The house there he built of stone, and around it a great fence. Here he hid himself away, nestled in the deeps of the Menhir hills.

This Chateau served as his home for many years and labored in its laboratories learning the trade of the wizard. Here lay his apothecaries, his conservatory, and solarium. He built donjons beneath and flooded its recesses with all manner of dark thought and incantation, until at last a heavy, brooding darkness lay over the Chateau. Few visited the eccentric mage and the fear of his madness spread through the valleys and across the hills of Yggsburgh. But one day, without warning the wizard gathered his books and charts, his beakers and jars and all the myriad materials of his studies, closed its doors and removed himself from the Chateau. Later the folk of Yggsburgh learned that Zagyg had settled in the nearby castle, whereat he continued his many and varied magical studies.

And the Dark Chateau was far from his thought and fell into disuse and ruin.

Goblins came to haunt the hills about and many times set to plundering the old house, but often it proved too daunting, too deadly and the bones of many stout goblin soon mixed with the rubble about of the house. But they spoke of this place around their camps and eventually rumor of the haunted manse came to the folk of Yggsburgh. Here it is fashion to discuss the wizard and his dark abodes, the greater and lesser. They tell of wealth undreamt of, and power in magic left lying upon the stony floors.

There in the Menhir Hills lies the Dark Chateau and the wealth of the Magis youth, all tokens for the taking if the adventurer be brave and have the fortitude to bury his comrades in the halls of the dead.

This is a terrific Rob Kuntz game for castles and crusades. I like much but not all of Rob's work. I'd say this is his best work. It is action-packed, but old-school in the sense that if the PCs are stupid and wildly aggressive, they will almost certainly be slaughtered. In other words, there are serious dangers in the module, some of which are best avoided.

It is a preview to the Castle Zagyg (Castle Greyhawk under a different name due to copyright issues) series of modules that is forthcoming.

            The module is for L1-3.

                  Book Description

There's a lot of romance about becoming a parent, but at some point the storybook scenarios of serene life with baby are interrupted by the darker side of the motherhood experience: the little "bundle of joy" cries inconsolably, wakes up four times a night, won't take a bottle—the fantasy of motherhood quickly collides with reality. Vivian Glyck shows us that in fact it's the difficult parts of parenting that are the most valuable. The many challenges call on us to grow and develop as people. "Parenting," Glyck writes, "is the ultimate spiritual practice."

The Tao of Poop presents ten valuable life lessons that arise amid all the challenges of parenting. Based on the author's own experience and drawing on the sentiments of many mothers she's spoken to and corresponded with, each chapter explores a common parenting predicament and a lesson that can be drawn from it, as well as helpful tips and strategies she calls "sanity savers."

                  5 out of 5 stars Refreshing.......2007-05-25

I Love this book, it is funny and insightful. It will give you a new outlook on your daily "mommy" activities. It is easy to read and offers a realistic view rather than "super mom" partenting.

5 out of 5 stars An honest, humorous account of parenting little ones.......2006-08-13

Thank you Vivian for sharing your thoughts and experiences. This is a wonderful, quick read for mothers everywhere. The pages ooze with the honesty mothers need to hear in order to validate personal, at times confusing, feelings regarding a role that our society tends to romanticize.

1 out of 5 stars For neurotic moms only..........2006-08-05

Frankly I'm surprised at the high ratings this book received. I was given this book by my mother a few months after having my first child - and having nothing to read for a week at a family retreat ended up reading (most of) it. I found most of these "lessons" more than a bit silly and maybe applicable for a self-absorbed and neurotic mother. If you are the type that needs to make a list to remember to have a heart-to-heart with your partner - this book is for you. Otherwise, if you have the slightest bit of common sense when it comes to yourself, your child and your life - you certainly don't need this book.

                  5 out of 5 stars Motherhood can sometimes suck--and that's okay!.......2006-06-16

If you've ever felt the pressure to be a perfect new mom (such as acting as if you're loving every moment of the experience) but are falling extremely short of your goal, Mommy Guru Glyck will let you know it's okay. You can say to yourself that motherhood sucks, it's hard, completely exhausting, and you might even wonder if it was the right choice for you! All normal and natural feelings that we shouldn't try to deny if we experience them. Glyck shows that allowing yourself to laugh at the early mommy insanity is the healthiest attitude any new mom can have. In her tales of her own less-than-perfect beginnings as a mom. . Glyck inspires and teaches neophyte moms to navigate those first few exhausting months of motherhood with humor, acceptance, and commitment to the bigger picture of raising a child. I absolutely adored this book and think it should be in the hands of every new mom who is honest with herself.

                  2 out of 5 stars I disagree.......2006-06-10

No wonder her boy is destined to be an only child. I get only an overwhelming vibe of resentment from this mom whose child cuts in on her writing time and whose friends are only competetive about their children. I pushed myself through it because the ideas are good, but her illustrations lack any positive experiences of her own. The most redeeming parts are those in the shaded boxes contributed by other moms. They include the loving and learning aspects experienced by all new moms which Ms. Glyck doesn't seem to be able to contribute herself.

The first edition of this book sold more than one million copies in 35 years and helped shape the way Americans remembered a recent war. Now thoroughly revised by the acclaimed historian Stephen E. Ambrose to help introduce a new generation of readers to the Second World War, this book tells the story of Blitzkreig, Pearl Harbor, D-Day, and Hiroshima better than any other. In words and pictures, it relates an epic struggle between the dueling forces of communism, fascism, and democracy. There is simply no better introduction to that titanic conflict available, and an estimated 70 percent of its text is new material by Ambrose. All ages can enjoy it, but the heavy graphic element makes this volume especially appealing to mature kids with an interest in history.

                  Book Description

With the same epic narrative force that made his Undaunted Courage a New York Times bestseller with more than 417,000 copies in print, historian Stephen E. Ambrose has revised and updated The American Heritage New History of World War II for today's students, history buffs, veterans, and fascinated readers. Seamlessly incorporating a significant amount of new text and captions into the original text by Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist C. L. Sulzberger, Ambrose has produced a comprehensive and riveting account of the six-year global conflict that transformed world politics and shaped the course of modern history. Here are the personalities and strategies of Churchill, Roosevelt, Hitler, and Stalin brought vividly to life; the military tactics of Eisenhower, Rommel, and Patton; battles from El Alamein to D-Day to Guadalcanal; completely new chapters on the atrocities of the Holocaust and the secret war of espionage and weaponry, much of it from top-secret sources made available since the end of the Cold War. Hundreds of haunting images from renowned war photographers on the line of battle as well as new color maps illustrate Ambrose's masterful text; together they brilliantly evoke in this definitive single volume the courage, commitment, military genius, and true horror of war. This new edition will endure as a major contribution to World War II scholarship from one of the most highly regarded and widely read historians of our time.

                  Download Description

New computer-generated color maps also highlight important battles for a better understanding of these complex military campaigns. Just in time for the next generation, this edition captures the courage, commitment, military genius, and true horror of the war that gave birth to a new era in world politics. For students, history buffs, veterans, and fascinated readers, The American Heritage New History of World War II is the definitive single-volume compendium on the subject and will endure as a major narrative of world history.

                  4 out of 5 stars A good book.......2006-07-24

Although the book has been written from an American perspective, the written content and the photographs are well balanced. A reader may think that too much importance is given to United States. Yes and No. Yes, because the entry of United States changed the whole proportion of World War II. No, because a fair amount of coverage has been given to fighthing at other hemispheres (although from a birds eye view of an American).

Winners write and rewrite history. This book has been written by United States. If you do not mind that, then it is a really fascinating book.

The book is well balanced with writting and photographs potraying World War II. I felt it more like a movie.

The book is a good one. I bought a old one in almost new condition for $10 and I never repented the money spent.

4 out of 5 stars Substantial Coffee Table Version For Your Use!.......2004-01-09

This attractive and fairly substantive book is another welcome addition to the pantheon of books covering the Second World War, serving to introduce the neophyte to the massive worldwide conflict through the employment of a credible narrative with the clever and helpful photographs, maps and charts placed alongside the text to aid learning and understanding. While not the kind of masterful text as some other books on the subject, such as Gerhard Weinberg's superb "A World At Arms", or the even more recent "A War To Be Won" by Murray and Millett, this revised version of the American Heritage book is a good teaching resource for use at either the high school or introductory undergraduate college level course.

It is expensive, and for that reason is likely less often utilized as a standard text that would otherwise be the case. Yet, given the average cost of a single hardbound text in school bookstores these days, its hefty price tag is not unreasonable given all the collected merits the book delivers. Featuring a new introduction by the late Stephen Ambrose, dean of the popular WWII authors until his recent demise, the book quite handily incorporates a lot of additional material into the text and uses dozens of new photographs as well as a bevy of updated maps, charts, and other devices all geared toward greater understanding of one of the most complex and far-fetched historical phenomena in modern history.

As with the original version, the revised text features over 700 dramatic and visually haunting photographs, artist's renderings, cartoons, and state of the art computer-aided maps. Thus the student can gain a much-improved understanding of how battles progressed, the strategic importance of certain situations, and the ways in which opposing forces deployed and then redeployed to gain advantage over the course of a particular engagement. Given the fact that WWII has had such a monumental impact on the world and for subsequent history, this book provides a stunning opportunity to engage students, capture their imaginations, and compel learning by offering a plethora of meaningful media through which to do so. I highly recommend this book for use in the classroom, and for anyone wanting an entertaining, educational, and eminently useful book covering the waterfront that was World War Two. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars An excellently illustrated volume.......2003-03-21

Zulzberger's book makes excellent use of photographs to enmesh the reader in the era of WWII. In addition, ample annotation and explanations are given. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars This is "new" history?.......2001-12-29

This is a work of absurd fluff. This is WW2 from a solipsistic, silly All-American perspective that really is a fantasy. 600 pages of WW2 "history" with 45! count'em-45 pages on the Eastern Front where the bulk of WW2 was actually fought. Its the same old boring photos we've all seen mixed with a an even more jingoistic editorial slant than the old American Heritage WW2 History. A more appropriate title would have been Stephen Ambrose's WW2 Fantasy; no pesky Russkies in this story.

3 out of 5 stars A engrossing Historical text that flows like a good novel!.......2001-03-23

Although a bit too "patriotic", this was a good read from start to finish. Recommend for those who know little about the biggest conflict in history.

More depth was needed for pre-war Pacific Theatre. More charts, maps and technical descriptions would have been good as well.

                      Book Description

One of the great challenges faced today by those responsible for ancient cultural sites is maintaining the delicate balance between conserving these fragile resources and making them available to increasing numbers of visitors. This book reports on an international symposium that addressed
conservation issues in the Mediterranean region. The contributors focused on three sites--Piazza Armerina in Sicily, Knossos on Crete, and Ephesus in Turkey.
