dont waste your time.......2007-01-05
I was looking for a book to get some ideas for the new house I am building and possibly some floor plan ideas. The homes in this book are gaudy east coast cookie cutter types best suited for fairways of some snobby country club golf course. I didnt find one house with a decent kitchen! Why is the kitchen always some tiny room stuck in the corner isolating the cook from the rest of the house. I wanted somthing inspirational and unique. It is also all balck and white with just arcitectural sketches of the houses. If you want ideas, go to the market and pick up a sunset, log homes or westen living magazine for $5 instead, they are full of great ideas and beautiful photos of kitchens, baths and exteriors that dont include hardy plank siding or somthing my 97 year old grandmother would find appealing.
Natural Light House Plans are pretty dim in this review.......2000-04-14
I found this book while trying to find a unique but practical houseplan for a custom home to be built along a riverfront on a bluff. The sunlight is ample at this site. So I was rather optimistic to purchase this book. However, my enthusiasm turned to disappointment in browsing through this rather mundane set of plans. Some of the examples appeared to come from the 1970s prototypes found along Southern California. There were no magical window placements or use of extraordinary skylights and the such. There were a few distinguished types, but none to this reviewer's liking. I did find the adobe prototype of plans seen in the southwest as somewhat interesting in this book. Otherwise, don't let the title fool you.
Book Description
Roger Fry, a core member of the Bloomsbury Group, was involved with all aspects of the art market as artist, critic, curator, historian, journalist, advisor to collectors, and gallery operator. He is especially remembered as the person who introduced postimpressionist art to Britain.
Reprinted in this volume are seventeen of Fry's works on commerce in art. Although he had no formal training in economics, Fry addressed the art market as a modern economist might do. It is therefore fitting that his writings receive here an original interpretation from the perspective of a modern economist, Craufurd D. Goodwin. Goodwin explores why Fry's work is both a landmark in the history of cross-disciplinary thought and a source of fresh insights into a wide range of current policy questions.
The new writings included contain Fry's most important contributions to theory, history, and debates over policy as he explored the determinants of the supply of art, the demand for art, and the art market institutions that facilitate exchange. His ideas and speculations are as stimulating and provocative today as when they were written.
"A fascinating selection of essays by one of the twentieth century's most thoughtful and stimulating critics. Goodwin's introduction sets the stage beautifully, providing useful links to Veblen and Keynes." --D. E. Moggridge, University of Toronto
"Art and the Market uncovers new connections between aesthetics and art in the Bloomsbury Group. . . . Goodwin adds significantly to the understanding of cultural economics in the work of Fry himself as well as J. M. Keynes and even Leonard and Virginia Woolf." --S. P. Rosenbaum, University of Toronto
"All those interested in the arts and economics, and their connections, will be delighted by this collection, as will be students of Bloomsbury." --Peter Stansky, Stanford University
Craufurd D. Goodwin is James B. Duke Professor of Economics, Duke University.

A must have for anyone serious about modernist sculpture.......2006-04-26
Though not for the uninitiated, this book offers much in the way of theoretical interpretations and background information of various facets of the modernist movement. There are many fine photos and interesting quotes from the major sculptors from 1890-1960 or so. This reads like an old British professor giving a lecture he's done a million times, and who might like to hear himself talk. That's who Sir Read was, I imagine. There's much to be gleaned from these pages.
modern thinking without fuss.......2002-06-16
Modern Sculpture takes us through the thoughts and ideas that finnished a stagnated era and gave birth to true creativity. It is written in a clear, very understandable way... without loosing its depth of insight. Beautifully presented and with a magnificent choice of sculptures.... fantastic reading!!!!

Read it........2002-08-18
Excellent and beautiful representation of natural birth at the end of the the book. Just as entertaining and stimulating as the rest of her books. Bought it a year ago and still read it over every month or two.
One of my favorite DTWOF books.......1997-08-01
I loved reading this book while I was going through my first pregnancy, even though mine was achieved in a more orthodox manner than Toni's :-) I hope my next time goes as smoothly as Rafael's birth. I think this book had a very accurate and suspenseful portrayal of pregnancy, and Clarice's stress was not stereotyped as the classic "nervous father"
Buy it now!.......1996-05-28
This latest version of "Dykes" delivers good artwork, postmodern lesbians, and chosen family relations
like no one else in the business.
A book you will read again and again.

Customer Reviews:
The Can Do Patient.......2007-08-26
In 1985, Beverly Zakarian was a wife, a mother to a 15-year old girl, and a newly diagnosed patient with Stage 3 ovarian cancer. She lost her uterus to surgery and her hair to chemotherapy, but she found her passion for patient empowerment.
Zakarian learned the hard way a lesson that has now become a touchstone in successful cancer treatment - that patients must take an active role in their cancer care. Her experience with the "don't ask, don't tell" medical establishment, confusing federal bureaucracies and unresponsive insurance companies, led her to found the Cancer Patients Action Alliance.
Instead of being a care-based group by providing access to services, emotional support and other important but reactive resources, Zakarian and CAN-ACT advocated direct patient action via political, social and personal agendas.
Her book, published one year before her death in 1997, still speaks with the fire of an evangelist. Many of the chapters were written before the large scale availability of Internet-based resources. Ironically, the outmoded chapters support Zakarian's argument in the transformative power of information.
This ground-breaking work is a historical reference point to the birth of the cancer-patient advocacy movement. It also provides an excellent overview of the mind-boggling and multi-agency drug approval process required for cancer treatment.
Zakarian's most enduring vision - and what keeps this book relevant today - is that life and death decisions belong to the community most impacted by the disease. And by organizing, cancer patients can be an important voice not only in the conversation, but in their outcome.
A Invaluable New Resource!.......1997-01-03
I just read an extraordinary new book and I'd like to share my thoughts with you. "The Activist Cancer Patient" by Beverly Zakarian is an important new book and anyone with cancer should own this unique and exceptional resource. Ms. Zakarian, a cancer survivor, has written a moving, inspirational, and practical aid for cancer patients.
While "empowerment" is the main theme, "The Activist Cancer Patient" is also a step-by-step guide on how to improve your odds of surviving cancer. It teaches people - in the midst of crisis - how to become activists for their own most effective cancer treatment, how to gain access to the newest therapies, and suggests how they can apply what they've learned to the public arena - and why they must! It provides numerous resources for getting the information needed to become informed, empowered, effective patients. Be your own advocate. "It's your life... you need to fight for it!"
I know that millions of people would benefit greatly from "The Activist Cancer Patient." It's truly a "Life-Aid!"

Book Description
Two events in the 19th century turned the minds of Americans westwards towards eventual and inevitable conflict with the Plains Indians. The first was victory in the Mexican-American War, which brought millions of acres of new land in the West. The second was the discovery of gold in California. One of the results of this migration was conflict with the Indians who inhabited the Plains. So it was natural that the Army, the nation's armed peace-keepers, should be sent to garrison the West. This book by Philip Katcher tells the absorbing story of the US cavalrymen who patrolled the Plains from 1850-90.

Book Description
Early in the Civil War both the North and South were confronted with an entirely new problem in logistics. George Edgar Turner writes: "It began to appear that important railroad junction points were to become major military objec-tives." Victory Rode the Rails portrays the decisive military advantage enjoyed by the side that controlled the railroads. Turner was a retired lawyer and insurance executive when his book was first published in 1953.
It "remains the best introduction to the subject of railroads and military operations during the Civil War," says Gary Gallagher in presenting this book to a new audience.
Customer Reviews:
The Iron Horse Calvary.......2000-12-12
The history of the Civil War is intimately tied with the spread, refinement and development of new technologies. From iron-clad ships to rifled artillery to aerial observation, the military effort expended by North and South changed the face of the industry in the United States. Victory Rode the Rails looks at one aspect of this change -- the railroads and how they helped the North win the war.
From the early skirmishes in Baltimore to the final rail movements surrounding the surrender at Appomattox, Turner does a magnificent job of making the railroads of the 1860s come to life. By keeping his focus on the railroads and their role in the various campaigns, Turner highlights a side of the war that is commonly glossed over in histories that focus on battle tactics.
Starting with the differing North/South attitudes towards railroads prior to the war, which left the CSA with a rail network that was ill prepared for the rapid dispersal of troops and supplies that the war required, Turner celebrates the business plans, engineering feats and supply marvels that allowed the Northern commanders to continue their advances even as Southern troops worked to destroy the rails, and vice versa.
A must read for American Civil War historians and rail buffs.......1998-08-12
As the title describes this book provides an extremely well written analysis of the decisive significance the railroad had on both the start and outcome of the American Civil War. While the content is authoritative it reads like a novel and I had difficulty putting it down.
I found the early chapters that discuss how the socio-economic environment, created in large part by the railroad, helped foster the events leading to the outbreak of hostilities particularly insightful. The chapters describing the events that took place around Washington and Baltimore in the early years of the war are incredible. Turner's tight prose describing the political shenanigans and war profiting in the Lincoln cabinet shows that little has changed in Washington in the 125 years
I only wish that the book contained better maps of the regions covered.
This book is a must read for American Civil War historians and rail buffs

Book Description
The Huaorani of Ecuador lived as hunters and gatherers in the Amazonian rainforest for hundred of years, largely undisturbed by western civilization. Since their first encounter with North American missionaries in 1956, they have held a special place in journalistic and popular imagination as "Ecuador's last savages." Trekking Through History is the first description of Huaorani society and culture according to modern standards of ethnographic writing. Through her comprehensive study of their extraordinary tradition of trekking, Laura Rival shows that the Huaorani cannot be seen merely as anachronistic survivors of the Spanish Conquest. Her critical reappraisal of the notions of agricultural regression and cultural devolution challenges the universal application of the thesis that marginal tribes of the Amazon Basin represent devolved populations who have lost their knowledge of agriculture. Far from being an evolutionary event, trekking expresses cultural creativity and political agency. Through her detailed comparative discussion of native Amazonian representations of history and the environment, Rival illustrates the unique way the Huaorani have socialized nature by choosing to depend on resources created in the past -- highlighting the unique contribution anthropology makes to the study of environmental history.
