Book Description
It's the ultimate escape fantasy: Trade in the rat race for life on a tropical island and all the languid luxury that it evokes. For India Hicks and David Flint Wood, the dream became reality when, after high-profile careers-she as a fashion model, he as an advertising executive-the couple left the city behind for the Bahamas. Five years and three children later, the husband-and-wife team have impeccably restored three houses and one hotel. Fusing traditional European design with Asian, African, and Caribbean influences, the resulting interiors reflect their love of intense color and their keen sense of style-inherited on India's side from her father, the renown interior designer David Hicks, and further enhanced by the family's travels.
In Island Life, the secrets of these sumptuous, unique homes-used as locations for Ralph Lauren, J. Crew, and Vogue magazine, among others-are revealed in intimate detail. With panoramic color photographs, David Loftus captures not only the eclectic combinations of antiques, flea market finds, and modern furnishings, but also the overall ambiance of the tropics. For those who share David and India's dream, this is where to start planning.

Never received...ordered 3 times!!!.......2007-06-19
You may or may not receive this book. Like another reviewer, my order was never completed. I ordered it THREE times, waited 6 weeks each time...and then was informed my order was cancelled because it was unavailable. The last time I ordered it, I called them and they "assured" me it was "IN STOCK". Later, I was notified it was unavailable once again. Its bizarre! Don't hold your breath waiting for this one. It may be a great book, but I will apparently never know.
A book to take you away from everyday life.......2007-01-03
I found this book an absolute dream. The pictures are superb and the text is so unpretentious and simple. I loved the way the family has created such a simple and beautiful house (or houses) unlike so many of the gaudy mansions of the rich that inhabit the Bahamas.
I have visited Harbor Island and the lifestyle appears so slow and easy that it really appears to be a paradise. India points out though that there is a price to be paid. The climate does make it difficult to maintain property.
In summary, I loved the book, the words and the pictures and I read it from cover to cover in a little under two days. It left we wanting a simpler, more balanced life and sunshine!
A Favorite.......2006-07-31
I find myself reaching for this book over and over again. In it the authors generously give us a glimpse of the life they have made on a small island in the Bahamas. With a lot of hard work and no pretension, they have gotten it mostly just right. Their houses are neither overdone nor underdone, but pleasing to the eye, soothing and liveable. Highly recommended.
Never got item - it was unavailable.......2006-07-30
Never got item - waited several weeks and then was notified.
Nice to look at....PERIOD.......2004-06-27
The cover was very appealing. First impressions etc;. The inside photos even more so. The writing however sounded like the ramblings of a spoiled child living in an unreachable reality sometimes and at other times, the snobbery of an aristocracy only appreciated in the mind of the writer and those who really believe that paradise can only be created by the writer.
I live in the Bahamas and so yes I have a paradise of my own, but does anyone really care about 'my personal paradise' so much that they would read about it. I think not. The thing that makes simple beauty, well simply beautiful is simply leaving it alone.
Final thot; Nice to look at.....PERIOD.

Book Description
As a great master of the early Renaissance, Piero della Francesca created paintings for ecclesiastics, confaternities, and illustrious nobles throughout the Italian peninsula. Since the early twentieth century, the rational space, abstract designs, lucid illumination and naturalistic details of his pictures have attracted wide audiences. Piero's treatises on mathematics and perspective fascinate scholars in a wide range of disciplines. This Companion brings together new essays that offer a synthesis and overview of Piero's life and accomplishments as a painter and theoretician.

Book Description
"These images are a spectacular reaffirmation that we are privileged to live in the greatest age of exploration the world has ever known."-From Arthur C. Clarke's foreword
Since the 1960s the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has been sending unmanned satellites to explore the planets, moons, and sun. These probes have amassed a stunning visual record of other worlds, revealing not one but scores of new frontiers, from rust-red Mars to the ethereal rings of Saturn.
Author Michael Benson has spent years compiling and digitally processing the best of these images. In Beyond this "deskbound cosmic pilgrim" (Atlantic Monthly) has pulled together the most spectacular of them into one volume that presents these photographs for the first time as art. The resulting book consists of two parts: the first is a spectacular visual tour of the solar system, with views every bit as compelling as the work of the great landscape photographers on earth; the second is a series of beautifully written essays that explain the story behind these photographs: the history of the probes' journeys, how they work, and why they were built. This book shows us how modern science has revealed the astonishing beauty and mystery of the solar system and its awe-inspiring worlds far beyond any places human beings have ever directly observed.
Customer Reviews:
good pics.......2007-10-02
this has a lot of good pictures in it. It is well worth the purchase if you are looking for a reasonable compilation of planetary images. The one problem is that is does not have any of the Cassini-Huygens images of Saturn. This is extremely unfortunate because the book would have benefited greatly by these images. Other than then that it is mostly pictures without a lot of explanation. So if you have a decent knowledge of the planets or you are in the mood to do some internet research on the things that you see, it is a great book.
Beautiful Book.......2007-05-09
beautiful coffee table book. not the sort of thing you sit and read, but great to have out when guests come over. fantastic images.
Breathtaking photos of our Solar System.......2007-01-05
I am floored every time I open this book of pictures of our Solar System. The images are so amazing and clear. I sometimes wonder that these are actually our neighboring planets.
The main planets themselves are mind-blowing in and of themselves. Io is perhaps the single most jaw dropping moon - a planet in its own right - and evokes so much imagination. Gallisto is also a fascinating moon with its craters coming to life.
Only two regrets with this book. First, the pictures of the moon were not satisfying at all. They didn't portray the moon in any way that is as beautiful as the rest of the solar system. Instead the pictures focus on close up pictures of its surface, which is interesting as well, yet I would have still liked to see whole far off pictures of the moon. And lastly, one of Saturn's moons is mentioned in passing - Titan - as perhaps the most interesting and fascinating of the solar system, and yet it isn't included. Why? Because they didn't want to detract from Saturn and its rings! Including Titan, if it is as fascinating as they are saying, would only add more to Saturn.
Both are trivial and it doesn't in any way change my view of this fantastic collection of pictures of our Solar System. This is a must for all households. A definite recommend.
5 stars.
Look At the Stars & What Do You See?.......2005-10-28
Have you looked up into the night sky or early morning to see the plethora of stars in their stark beauty. On a clear day, it is a spectacular sight, as on this morning's. Mars is getting closer to the Earth, but that is not the sight you will get if you go out and observe the solar system in all its glory.
Near the outer reaches, the second largest planet hovers like a shimmering star with its rings; Saturn is 250,000 miles wide and formed of minute to boulder-size particles held in the gravitational grip of a rapidly spinning central sphere. Jupiter, the largest, has two moons as discovred by the Galileo probe in its fourteen year mission.
Galileo Galilei made telescopic discoveries of the universe; Johannes Kepler used meticulous mathematical charting of the planets; and NASA's 'Spunik' and 'Ranger' spaceflights of the past four decades shows the beauty of the spheres as they appear "suspended in space like weightless jewels." Venus is out nearest and Mars the other next-door neighbor. The 'Mariner 9' probe showed the vastness of the "grandest canyon in the entire solar system and as wide as the continental United States." Venus is the brightest planet we can see from Earth.
Mercury speed around the Sun every 88 days faster than any other planet. It is forty percent larger and far denser than our Moon. It has an overall magnetic field and an iron core, like Earth. Jupiter and Neptune have also been closely obsrved by NASA's 'Voyager 2.' Jupiter is the largest planet with fourteen moons; no, make that sixty-one, according to the 'Voyager 1' probe.
Once upon a time, some years ago, I gave a tour of the Solar System to a literary group. Being a new member, I had stuck with travel books until I got a firm footing and learned what the others were reviewing. So, I began, "Today I will take you on a tour, but not like one you've ever been on before -- we will soar out into the sky and view the Universe as man knows it today." Much has been discovered since then, as the photographs Michael Benson uses in this book show in detail. He confesses that he retrieved most from NASA's Planetary Photojournal web site. They are "out-of-this-world" in every aspect.
Gorgeous!!! Nothing Comparable........2005-07-11
This book is really a space buff's wet dream. I mean, there is not a single book on the market, anywhere, that has such gorgeous, exquisite and detailed pictures of the planets and moons of our solar system as this book has (made by Voyager, Galileo, Maggelan and the like). You just won't believe your eyes. And the essays of Benson (and those of Arthur C. Clarke and Lawrence Weschler) are also splendid, one by one. Convince yourself and surf to the website of Kinetikon Pictures to behold some of the photographs offered in this book and to read some of the essays (and even more). Robotic planetary photography made into (abstract expressionist and impressioinst) art, that is what Beyond is all about. Buy this hefty beast of a book before it is sold out.

Book Description
Trouble in Academe: A Memoir is a partially autobiographical account of two academic crises: one at Indiana University in the late 1960s and another at Boston University during the 1970s.
Book Description
Millions cheer at live and televised games, but few fans have the opportunity to get under the helmets and behind the masks to meet hockey's greatest stars. STARFORCE HOCKEY tells the inside story of the greats who have spanned the decades, from future Hall of Famers-Ray Bourque, Mark Messier, Chris Chelios, Grant Fuhr, Patrick Roy, and Steve Yzerman-to the players whose stars are burning brightest now-superstar Jaromir Jagr, Eric Lindros, Curtis Joseph, Pavel Bure, Dominik Hasek, Brian Leetch, Teemu Selanne, Peter Forseberg, and Paul Kariya-to those whose stars are rising for the first time-the young and the talented Steve Kariya, the Sedin Twins, and Patrik Stefan.
Each player is profiled, with information about his interests, habits, superstitions, and unique skills. "Did you know?" boxes include relevant statistics for each player. Exciting photos capture the players' drive and talent on and off the ice. And telling quotes from insiders such as general managers, scouts, opponents, teammates, coaches, and journalists provide revealing insights. Perfect as a gift or a personal keepsake, STARFORCE HOCKEY is great for any hockey buff.
Eric Duhatschek is one of the most respected and knowledgeable writers on the hockey beat. He has covered the sport for 22 years. He is a columnist for The Hockey News and co-author of 100 Years of Hockey.

Customer Reviews:
Great, easy way to get your child ready for school.......2002-01-29
This is a day by day layout of the skills your child should have before entering school. It is very easy to follow what is listed for each day. At the end of the 11 weeks, your child will know left from right, his address and phone number, colors, shapes, sounds of letters, counting to 20 and much more.
This is a fun easy way for the parent to help the child be ready to succeed in school!
Get ready to learn.......2000-03-24
This is a complete program that can help a keen parent to give their children some great advantages before they enter pre-school. Not only will this help them mentally and physically it will help them to settle into the routine of learning that they will be introduced to in pre-school. This book is so easy to follow, the instructions are simple and easy to remember so you aren't constantly interupting your activity to see what is next. I think that even if you don't want to follow the whole program you can use this book just to get ideas for activities to keep the kids occupied. I have not yet found a book in this genre that is so helpful and straight to the point. There is only a short message on the aim of the book, there is no child pshycology jargon that you have to sift through just to get the message. Excellent!

Based on eyewitness accounts of boys and girls, the first book to chart the way children experienced the Civil War
The U.S. Civil War touched the lives of millions of children on the battlefield and the home front. Reluctant Witnesses gives their perspective on America's bloodiest conflict. Their diaries, letters, and reminiscences are a testimony to the astonishing resiliency of the human spirit. These children from the Union and the Confederacy speak without hate but with the stubborn hope that peace might prevail in the end.
Customer Reviews:
A Useful Compendium.......2004-09-10
While it is true that there is little "new" written here, and that the materials can be obtained, one must also commend Dr. Werner for actually doing the work, and publishing it.
There are few photographic images of children from the wartime, and any insights into the drummer boys North and South, some who upon reaching the appropriate age became soldiers, is testament to the unfortunate appeal of war throughout the centuries, how quickly the glamour fades, and how tenacious even a very young person can become once committed to a cause. Thus, the lessons of 1861-1865 are as much modern lessons as windows to the thoughts and predicaments of children and adolescents in that unfortunate conflagration. Thankfull, there is little psychobabble to explain why a boy would seek to participate, or a young girl seek to honor her elders who participated and suffered.
One of the youngest drummer-boys, John Clem, ultimately became a General and lived to 1937. I would like to have seen more about his life, and perhaps a biography is in order.
The book also speaks to the raised hopes, ultimately dashed, of freed children in slavery--for example, Mattie Jackson, of Missouri, wrote an autobiography in 1866 prefaced with the statement "I ask you to buy my little book to aid me in obtaining my education that I may be enabled to do some good on behalf of the elevation of my emacipated brothers and sisters." Her "book" was written down by a friend who was literate, and who edited it.
As we know, the last know Confederate widow, Ms. Alberta Martin, recently passed on. The heritage of this crucial defining time in American history is still important, as witnessed by Gen. Colin Powell's 1996 dedication of a monument to the 185,000 black soldiers who fought for the Federal army. What we need is a monument to all who fell, suffered disease and deprivation, loved ones who spent the rest of their lives permanently changed by the conflict--a truly integrated monument and dedication to the Irish, Blacks, Jews, Germans, immigrants from near and far, who fought "Pro Aris et Pro Focis"--for hearth and home (Cicero), a theme found on Federal and Confederate battle flags.
"With malice toward none, and charity for all" to paraphrase Mr. Lincoln, is a promise yet to be fulfilled. All who seek to preserve their heritage and acknowledge the blessings of living in the America we cherish and which so many seek to reach, is the legacy of the children who witnessed and participated in the American Civil War. We owe them all, drummer boys and girls on the home front struggling to survive, no less. However, we cannot call them all "reluctant," can we?
I'd never thought the Civil War Could be so interesting!!!.......2003-05-14
This book, about kids in the Civil War, was fascinating! I loved every word of it. When I was instructed at school to read a book about the Civil War, I was prepared to read some long, boring, historical novel. Instead, I picked up this book and couldn't put it down.
This book describes the life of children in the Civil War. It goes into detail about times of sadness and times of joy. Some of the quotes are just heart wrenching to hear what these kids went through and others make you happy. This book really made me feel like I was living back then, living through the troubles of the Civil War.
This book is not exactly a story but tells of different children chronologically with the war. Some of the children are mentioned throughout the whole book and others just appear once. Its so amazing what the kids went though back then. I hope you will read this book, not only for educational purposes but also for pure enjoyment.
All in all, Reluctant Witnesses is a moving description of the life of kids on the battlefield, in the homes, and stranded in the middle of nowhere during the Civil War. This book is captivating and great to read. I would recommend it in a heartbeat.
New Perspective of the Civil War.......2003-05-10
Usually I would think that anything that has to do with the civil war can be boring, but Reluctant Witnesses was very interesting because it was in totally different eyes. The U.S. civil war effected everyone in the U.S., but these kids that lived on the battlefield had a different experience then most people. It helped me relate to the topic of the civil war because they were in kids views. Since we think the same, I think of the civil war in a totally different way now. It gave me a break from the regular hate and bloody conflicts. These children spoke their thoughts and all they wanted was peace and the war to end. Normally people don't think about the kids and what they have to go through when war is going on. It is amazing that even children ranging from ages four to sixteen basically think have the same views on the war. The fact that young kids were even forced to fight amazed me and I felt bad for them. This book is intriguing and will open your mind to new thoughts.
Does not deliver what is promised........1998-06-12
This book, as I understood it, was to have provided new insight to the horrors of The War Between the States as seen through the eyes of children, both North and South. In my humble opinion it is only a poorly researched work based on readily available letters written by Federal soldiers and classic Southern diaries. Small passages from well known sources are intermingled with the authors' personal views that seem to twist the story into glorification of the Federal army and not necessarily what was witnessed by children. There is nothing to really educate or even entertain the average reader of WBTS history. In a nut shell it is old news with a Northern slant.

That would just simply not work as it was a present for a friend, so I turned to reliable Amazon. As a Peace Corps Volunteer from the South Pacific, I try to read as many books about that region of the world as possible, but it is often extremely difficult to find books about the South Pacific. This is a great find. Thanks!

Good reading.......2005-04-18
This book is greatly recommended for anyone who has some any remote interest in the personage of Queen Salote or who has any spark of interest in the region that she ruled.
The author, Elizabeth Wood- Ellem, takes an intricate look into the life of one of the world's last remaining monarchies. She further sheds more light on the decision making process that occurred during the late Queen's reign.
While the book is a comfortable read, it also gives the reader a glimpse into Tongan culture and the traditions that were so embellished by the Queen.
One of the great female leaders of the 20th Century.......2000-05-07
Tonga is a unique place in being the only Polynesian kingdom to maintain its culture and government through the colonial period that brought down similar cultures in Hawaii and throughout the Pacific. Queen Salote adds to this uniqueness by being the ruling queen of Tonga in the first half of the Twentieth Century, an era dominated by male chauvenism. This story of her life and reign provides a wonderful view into the culture and history of this island kingdom. For papalangi (the Tongan word for people of Western society) this is not an easy book because there is a lot of Tongan names, geneology, and customs necessarily involved in the biography of their queen. Yet the very things that make it difficult also make it a rewarding book to read. What makes the book most enjoyable is the portrayal of this marvelous woman who ruled Tonga for almost 50 years. She ruled without use of force during a time of dissent from rival nobles and emerged one of the most revered leaders in Tongan history. She convinced her British advisors of her ability to rule and her island adversaries that their independence depended on her rule. I can recommend this book without reservation to anyone interested in women's studies, international biography, Polynesian history, or British colonial history.
Ko e 'Otua Mo Tonga Ko Hoku Tofi'a.......2000-02-26
I sincerely recommend this book for all Tongans out there as well as those who are interested in discovering one of the most beloved Monarchs of our time. Queen Salote was not only a charismatic leader but also a progressive woman who brought Tonga to the forefront of the modern era by re-establishing its past. She restored the cultural pride of her people at a time when native cultures were suffering the ill-effects of Westernization.
This book will be a sweet recollection for those who were fortunate to witness her reign, and it will be a source of inspiration for younger generations who are seeking to learn about their themselves.
Truly, a remarkable book for a most remarkable person!

Introduction to the use of a neglected tool--the magnifier........1999-02-12
It has always annoyed me that toy shops are full of cheap microscopes but few good magnifiers. Children are more interested in that range of things which are a bit too small to see by eye alone, but too big to put on a microscope slide. Mr. Headstrom here provides a set of 50 "adventures" using an ordinary magnifying glass or hand lens to examine many of Nature's small wonders. It is a brief but detailled guide to the study of insects, flowers, and seeds, with occasional visits to the slimy side of nature; snails, leeches, and the like. Some of the adventures are for the shoreline, others merely to the backyard or nearby pond, but all are fruitful, well-described, and illustrated with line drawings. The book is a reprint of the 1962 edition, but is only charmingly dated. The language is a bit stiff for younger readers, but it would be an excellent guide for the parent/child team of explorers.
