Our contact with great architecture tends to be indirect, through representations. Few of us have seen the Taj Mahal, yet we all know exactly what it looks like. The useful act of photographing buildings can be an art, particularly when the photographer's presence seems to recede, and a great architectural shot suggests that you're seeing things as they are rather than through someone else's prism.
Julius Shulman has documented buildings in that seemingly transparent way for more than six decades. This meticulous and prolific craftsman was in the right place, California, at the right time, the golden age of West Coast modern residential architecture that spanned the 1930s to the 1960s. Richard Neutra helped him get his start, and he recorded early modernists such as Wright, Schindler, Soriano, Harris, Frey, Ain, Stone, Gropius, Kahn, and Neutra, as well as younger ones such as Goff, Lautner, Ellwood, Koenig, Drake, Killingsworth, Eames, Greene, Legoretta, and even early Frank Gehry. His view camera captured the glamour of hillside steel-and-glass houses cantilevered above the city lights, the serenity of desert vacation homes at dusk, and the clean-lined ingenuity of young architects working on modest budgets.
Shulman's text is a knotty quasi biography, but some good stories lurk there. This is a physically impressive book: its 300 large-format pages contain 500 superbly reproduced color and black-and-white photos that are worth more than the proverbial thousand words each. --John Pastier

Brillant Book.......2006-01-11
This book has been my bible. From the pure joy of looking at the visuals to the wealth of knowledge perched on it pages. For anyone interested in architecture and photography this is a must read.
Buy this book.......2002-01-10
If one is ever to purchase a book concerning mid-century modernism, purchase this book. The photography is amazing, and inspiring. The text is informative without being verbose. This is definitely one of the top ten favourites in my collection.
Mr. Shulman is absolutely brilliant.
Shulman - A great Photographer of Architecture.......1999-07-26
A terrific insight into the professional career of Julius Shulman. His work, his thoughts on Architects and their work and a cross section of some of the most beautifully crafted Photographs of Architecture from his files.
precise and remarkable; shape and form is astounding.......1999-04-25
an amazing book; the photography is superb in capturing the essence of architecture
Stunning design, beautiful photography, entertaining memoir.......1998-12-21
An extraordinary and rare book. Master architectural photographer Julius Shulman showcases the stunning modern designs of Neutra, Koenig, Eames, and others with extraordinary talent and craft. The photographs literally glow. Many of them bowl you over with their beauty. Others have the camp value of '50s advertising: housewives in modern kitchens, families lounging at poolside, couples entertaining in open living spaces. Shulman adds considerable depth by recalling his relationships with the architects, his encounters with the homeowners, his notes on making the photographs. If you admire modern design, appreciate fine photography, and like a good story, this is a book you will cherish.

Customer Reviews:
Are these other reviews written by friends of the author?,.......2005-09-04
I notice all of them only have one review each. Oh well conspiracy theories aside, Overpriced the book doesn't deliver what it promises. Brief superficial over view of animation, more of the book is given to listing past animators, Than any current how-to info.
A great guide to creating animated films!.......2004-07-24
This book is truly global in its scope, in both its material and in the lessons it offers. The CD included shows a great variety of styles of animation that mainstream commercial animation neglects. It includes biographies of artists along with some samples of their work.
The book is very user friendly, and offers step-by-step explanations of how to animate and distribute your own film. It includes links and sources of information that are otherwise difficult to obtain, giving the reader the inside scoop on the animation field. I found the resources section of the book particularly helpful.
As an artist working in the animation field, I would recommend this book to any student or veteran of animation, to open their minds to new creative possibilities. This book provides a guide for making animation that anyone with a computer and enough ambition can use to fulfill their dreams of becoming an animator!
In a word- GREAT!.......2003-11-18
As an independent film maker making the switch from 16mm to digital, this book has been indispensable. Not only does it show how to set up your studio, but also gives you estimates of the cost to step into this brave new world.
And what I found truly inspirational was the CD included with the QT movies of other independent animators. Seeing other people's work has always been the best motivation for doing my own. Thank you for putting this together to save us from time wasted trying to figure this out on our own.
A Complete Animator's Toolkit & Inspiring Teaching Tool.......2003-08-14
What I noticed immediately, then continued to admire throughout my reading of this book is that this little yellow book is very, very well written. I am impressed. I will use this book to teach my Animation I students, who will benefit from the history of independent animators the book provides, as well as the unbelievably detailed descriptions of the projects this animator completed. Subotnick fully describes what a digital animation studio (at home, or in the classroom) is comprised of, and describes the hardware and software tools animators may need. The book left me without questions! The CD-ROM is creative and of professional quality, and the animation clips on it show a good variety of work. This book was a welcome surprise, and an essential addition to my animation skills library!
The book I have been waiting for!.......2003-03-18
I am an animator who has worked in 16mm film and have been an animation instructor for children and adults for many years. I have been interested in computer animation, but found myself spending most of my time learning new computer programs rather than making animation. Then I would discover that the program I was trying to learn was difficult and not so useful for what I was trying to do.
Finally I have been saved! This book is exactly what I have been waiting for. Steve Subotnick has cut through the unwieldy morass of information to get down to the basics. His book is easy to hold, clearly and simply written, with pleasant, easy to look at drawings of equipment and procedures by Tim Miller, and some exquisite color pages of animaion stills from animators around the world.
This book takes you all the way through the processes of making an animated work and finishing it to a CD or Video which can be viewed by others. Steve saves you a lot of time by suggesting a limited amount of basic hardware and software which is flexible enough to do different types of animation, and inexpensive enough for many independent animators and schools to afford.
The book is inspirational for students and teachers in that Steve has listed outstanding films and videos, considered works of art by the international animation community. The book includes a CD with samples from these films and the end results of the simple exercises in the book. He starts each chapter with a brief quote from different animators.
The book is very enabling. Steve discusses how he and others get ideas and techniques. He encourages originality and creativity. He recommends that you "be yourself" in your animation work. I am using the book myself now and would recommend it to teachers, schools and everyone age 13 and up who is interested in learning to make animation on the computer.
Book Description
Rudy Park: The People Must Be Wired is the hilarious first collection of the technocentric comic strip Rudy Park. The strip lampoons the fast pace of our technology-driven world, our obsession with materialism, and the foibles of our cultural and political icons. Set at an Internet café, the strip follows the lives of a regular cast of characters, including Rudy, the café's manager, who believes in all things Internet, the healing powers of consumption, and the conviction that inner peace lies in having the latest technological gadget. At the cybercafé, Rudy must deal with his new station in life, his entrepreneurial boss, and an odd assortment of regular patrons, like Mrs. Cohen, an irascible octogenarian who challenges Rudy at every turn. The café is also a crossroads for contemporary issues and celebrity and political visitors, such as John Ashcroft (who monitors people from his home inside a pastry container at the cafe), and Senator Tom Daschle (who, afraid to draw too much attention to himself, lives under a table). The strip is currently syndicated in eighty newspapers and Web sites after bursting onto the comics page in 2001 with its unique brand of social and cultural commentary. Writer Theron Heir grew up in Boulder, Colorado, but currently lives in San Francisco. He is biding his time with cartooning until he finds a way to profit from his revolutionary theories on napping. Cartoonist Darrin Bell grew up in East L.A. before making his current home in the San Francisco Bay Area. His other comic strip, Candorville, is syndicated by the Washington Post Writer's Group. His editorial cartoons appear regularly in the L.A. Times and other major newspapers.

Too Apt a Reflection of Life.......2003-11-05
I've been reading this strip since it's debut and I was so pleased to have a book come out--I immediately had to purchase it! Bell and Heir are a fabulous team and have created a delightful group of characters that are an incredible mix of age, wisdom, thick headedness and fun. They poke fun at our obsession with coffee, computers, news stories, and the government. My favorite character has to be Sadie Cohen though---the cranky old lady who says everything we all think but that we're not always gutsy enough to express for ourselves. Go Xtreme Scrabble!!!!!
Great, Gutsy, and Good Art.......2003-10-01
If you're looking for something that has funny characters, great writing, and great artwork, this is for you. I never read comics until my boyfriend got me hooked on "Rudy Park" and "Get Fuzzy." But while Get Fuzzy is a good escape from the world around us, Rudy Park is great because it lampoons the world around us.
It even manages to make the horrible job situation we're facing today funny in unexpected ways. If you're afraid of the direction our country's headed in, wary of terrorism and corporate scandals, and you're worried that your job may suddenly disappear, nothing will make you laugh like this.
Forget Boondocks, this is some great social satire!.......2003-09-30
I was surprised how on-point, hilarious, and gutsy the political and social commentary in this book is. I've been reading this comic strip since day one on the NY Times website, and later in my local paper. Long before the 'sixteen words' in the President's speech made such an uproar, and back when the only other voice critical of the Administration was 'The Boondocks,' 'Rudy Park' was calling it like they saw it. This strip has spoken out when so many others in our Media have wimped out. But unlike 'The Boondocks' which is rarely funny, and is too mean-spirited for my tastes, this satire really does 'poke fun' at its targets. It's in the same spirit as 'The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.' It's honest and unafraid, but it's also light-hearted and whimsical at times. Also unlike Boondocks, it devotes a LOT of time to the characters, including Mrs. Cohen, a cranky but wise old lady who reminds me of my grandma, and Monkey, an orangutan Rudy bought from a broke day-trader. This first book also shows how Rudy is a constant victim of unrequited love, how his boss Armstrong is a greedy 'George Jefferson' type, and introduces us to several other endearing characters who are each a little bit mysterious. One, Randy 'The Rock' Taylor, got a job in airport security after 9-11, and routinely checks to make sure people don't have guns, knives, or ugly polka-dot underwear. My favorite is Uncle Mort, the wild-eyed, Liberal conspiracy theorist with a bullhorn who can never get anyone to pay any attention to him, no matter how loud -or how right- he is. This book is a great start, and I can't wait until the next one comes out (the next one, if they're doing them in order, should have even more commentary on the War on Terror and more developments with Rudy's unrequited love of Darlene Desai.). The strip is a wild ride, and I recommend getting this book for anyone who likes cafes, cares about politics and social issues, or who likes looking at really cute Orangutans that dream about Taco Bell value meals. If you want social satire that's endearing instead of mean-spirited, buy this book!

The Girlfriends' Guide to Surviving the First Year of Motherhood

Customer Reviews:
A "Funny" book about that first year of Motherhood.......2003-04-06
I recieved this book from my mother when I was pregnant with my first child. I didn't really read it until my daughter was 4 months old, but it still had me in stitches.
This book is meant to look at that first year of motherhood from an honest, yet funny approach. I really wouldn't use it for reference book like a Dr. Sears or Dr. Spock type book (although there are references and numbers you can call for more information on certain topics/subjects). This is meant to be a humerous, yet sometimes very truthful book about the first year of motherhood. It shows we all have many of the same issues and concerns, but shows them in a funny manner. Yes, some of what she tells may be a bit extreme, but that is what makes it so funny. You can still relate to what she is saying and may even have some similar expereinces come up.
I would definitely recommend this book. Especially if you are looking for something humerous. I have given this book to many of my "new mommy" friends and each and everyone has enjoyed it.
Loved it!.......2001-03-28
This book was so funny I almost ripped out my c-section stitches laughing over it. My husband liked it, and even my father loved it. He said he wished he'd read it when my mom first had me, he would have understood what was going on with her a lot better. I feel like the author's a friend of mine. She has really helped me through this tough first year. I'll definitely pass it on to my friends. THANKS!!!
baby book for the self absorbed socialite.......2000-10-12
I was VERY disapointed in this book. I was hoping for something that would better explain the emotional feelings of the first year with my new baby. Instead I couldn't identify with 90% of what the author wrote about. I felt as if I was reading an account of the emotional roller coaster a young, social, self absorbed, and low confidance new mother was going through. I found sugestions for using toll free numbers just to get much needed adult conversation disturbing (was she trying to be funny?). And there was very little useful practical advice. It does cover the obvious distresses of your being concerned about your looks, the state of your house, and feeling of lonliness and isolation felt by most new mothers. But the accounts are extreme, and frightning, and not normal. I found it useful only as an example of new parents being completely unprepared for a baby and out of touch with each others emotions and needs.
Not quite what I had in mind.......2000-10-09
I have to say I was a bit disappointed in this book. I, as a first time mom, was looking for a book that was informative as well as a bit humorous but not dry like many "Baby's First Year" books. The author is funny in some of her anecdotes, but the book as a whole comes off as a bit extreme. I have a 6 week old baby who is far from perfect, but she has not been anywhere near as bad as the babies described in the book. In fact, I think that some people would be scared off from having children if they were to read this book beforehand. I don't think I would recommend this book. I'm sure there are other books out there that would better serve the needs of first time mothers. Thanks for your time :)
Great advice and wit - just what I needed with a new baby!.......1998-05-02
This book is a must for every new mom - it is "Erma Bombeck meets Dr. Spock" and it contains everything you need for that first year. It's practical and funny and I couldn't put it down - it was my life and thoughts and problems all right there in front of me. This book addresses the real issues that are left out of so many other parenting books. You can look up a specific topic, or just read it for fun and information. My husband loved it, too - it's the only parenting book he's ever picked up for longer than 5 minutes! I'm sure this author, her husband and her children continue to live with great style and humor - I hope she writes more to prepare us for later stages.
Book Description
A compelling history of what is now acknowledged to be the world's first war machine, Chariot traces the rise and fall of the chariot across the Old World, from Ireland, through Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China, its influence on modern mechanized warfare, and its resonance in the popular imagination, from ancient art and literature to the films of Hollywood.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating Topic, Quirky Presentation.......2006-04-02
Arthur Cotterell takes on a fascinating topic -- the use of chariots in ancient warfare -- but the style of presentation degrades the impact of his book. Other reviewers are certainly right in pointing to the chaotic character of much of the narrative that darts about, seemingly unable to keep its focus. Although theoretically the chapters are organized according to geographical/cultural anchors (that would normally tend to impose a chronological framework), very often the narrative casually leaps thousands of miles (and even thousands of years) without warning. In part, this might be excused as a technique to provide context for what the author is describing, but often it seems driven either by the author's desire to display his particular expertise (ancient China) or just to tell a good story (amusing as the tale about Bonaparte and the tame rabbits may be, its relevance to war chariots is nonexistent).
But for the good news: Cotterell does explore in considerable detail the whole long story of chariots in warfare. He is firmly of the school that identifies military chariots as, primarily, archery platforms, but I do wish he could have explored in greater detail the implications of the introduction of spear-carrying warriors as chariot passengers or, for that matter, the presumed vulnerability of chariots to foot soldiers.
"Chariot" is far from a perfect history volume, but it is nontheless worth reading/
Should have written it sooner........2006-02-15
I purchased this book with great expectations having read his work before. However, after a 100 pages or so, I found Arthur constantly using the same examples over and over to prove his points. His book is a feeble attempt to repeat what has already been done so well by another author he quotes as being his inspiration for writing this book. If you want to read a great book with lots of evidence and solid writing, buy the book by the author who believes chariot warfare was the dominant form of warfare before the advent of the foot soldier. I am sorry the title escapes me, but the book is a great read. If you want a good work, don't buy this book, you are liable to have a good nap before you finish it.
awful book.......2005-12-03
This book is terrible:
1) very little information about chariots. Lots of anecdotal info (half the book!) about Chinese (and other) history - interesting but . . .
2) just a list of facts - no discussion of the theory of chariot warfare.
"chaotic" is a great word to describe this book. I agree with the above review. Can't fathom why this book was published, or even written.
Fascinating work marred by disorganization and digression into unrelated history.......2005-11-22
Mr Cotterell has tackled an interesting and largely neglected subject with "Chariot." This work is expansive, covering development of the chariot, supporting equipment, chariot battles, and culture stretching from Briton to China. The decline of the chariot and the many reasons for that are also reviewed and explained: development of cavalry, horse archers, heavy infantry, expense and time of training/maintaining chariotry, sociological changes, etc.
Unfortunately, the book is too expansive in its coverage of general history and mythology/epics. It loses focus and this can result in tiresome reading, waiting for the author to get back to the topic, chariots. For example, many pages are spent detailing the Indian epics and chariot use by the deities, but surprisingly little is presented about archaeological/history based Indian chariot use. Similarly, far too much time is spent on Homer's Iliad, while some other known historical uses of chariots in battle are entirely neglected.
A glaring example of how the historical aspect is neglected in favor of epics is the omission of the last major uses of scythed chariots, by Pontic rulers. Mithridates IV had some notable fiascos with scythed chariots-leading to open laughter and derision by the legions at Chaeronea. However, Mithridates' son, Pharnaces II, won a major victory in 61 BC at Ennium by disrupting the Roman infantry with scythed chariots to open gaps in a Roman army.
As other reviewers have noted, the author's arrangement of the book is haphazard. On the surface the book appears to have a logical outline, but within the text skips from period-to-period and place-to-place. The dust jacket quotation from the Times describes the book as "amiably discursive history" and it would be hard to find a more apt or concise description. The book lacks a proper chronological flow and frequently hops half a millennia or more, or several thousand miles.
An aspect that sets "Chariot" apart from most other ancient/classical warfare treatise is its coverage of China and India. The section on China is particularly informative. For instance, I was unaware that the Chinese developed the breast-strap harness system that allowed horses to pull far heavier burdens than those of all other regions of the time. All others relied on stifling neck-girth harnesses until the 6th to 10th century A.D. limiting them to lighter, smaller chariots. Another innovation of the Chinese was the dished wheel shape that added strength to the wheel along the axle's thrust axis.
The text is well illustrated with stele, sketches, rock drawings, etc.-98 B&W illustrations in all. A helpful feature is that each odd page of the text has a short description of the subject matter of the page.
In summary, despite numerous flaws, I recommend this book to those interested in chariots or ancient warfare
Chariots in context.......2005-11-08
An excellent book focused on the chariot -- its development and use. The strength of the book is that it puts the chariot in its military, social, literary, and religious context. It is not a straight forward military history. In fact it is more of a social and cultural analysis of the chariot with a great deal of analysis and emphasis on the chariot in society. Of particular note is the early analysis of the key elements of chariot development from the combined need of weapons development (the bow and spear), the technological requirement for a light yet sturdy vehicle, and the difficulty in breeding and training horses. The author then reviews how the chariot and its related requirements developed in west Asia, India, and China -- how the weapon system and/or its components spread from one region to another. If you're looking for a good contextual history of the chariot this is the book for you -- however, if you're looking for a standard military history of the chariot in battle, you'd best look elsewhere.

Book Description
Like rubber-neckers at an accident, people can't help but be fascinated by disasters. Is it the massive destruction and gruesome body counts? Or is it the unthinkable terror of the people caught in the middle? Join historian and former journalist Sandra Forty as she chronicles the enormity and horror of some of the most unforgettable disasters in modern history.
In Defining Moments: Disasters, the author chronologically describes disasters broadly grouped into six categories: Natural phenomena (earthquakes, volcanoes); pandemics (outbreaks of disease); human error (accidents); ecological disasters (oil spills); bad luck (accidents of fate); and terrorism (mass bombings and random attacks). The book covers the most epic and famous disasters, like the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and the sinking of the Titanic. The reader can also explore the aftermaths of other devastating events like Chernobyl, the Challenger explosion, and the 9/11 attacks, and each disaster is well-documented with astonishing during and after photographs, along with fact boxes that break down the what, where, and when, as well as the outcome and casualties for each tragic event.
Defining Moments: Disasters is a fascinating book that makes many of us feel extremely lucky to have escaped the fickle finger of fate.

Book Description
Responding to concerns about global warming, carbon dioxide emissions, and the political instability that threatens the US supply, Industrial Energy Systems enables management, system analysts, and performance engineers to develop and apply an operating strategy for the on-line optimization and control of energy systems in industrial plants.
It provides proven techniques for analysis that can guide equipment selection and flowsheet adjustments to reduce plant energy consumption without affecting the productive capacity of the plant. Originating in the 1970s and 1980s when high energy costs and the OPEC crises fostered energy conservation, these techniques have been applied successfully in many industries in the United States, as well as in several industrialized countries in the Middle and Far East.
