Endless possibilities.......2006-11-11

Four stars because I don't happen to like many of the examples of actual quilts, and perhaps that's because they reflect a Swiss / German origin and are a trifle too formal for my taste. Elsewise, this is a fabulous book. Found it at the library, tried to take notes, and decided it was worth owning because I'd never be able to harvest all the ideas. As might be expected from the origin, the instructions are thorough and clear. I don't happen to need them; I want ideas, not steps. YMMV.

The larger point: the basic log cabin block presents an almost endless number of ways to play with color both within the block and within the finished work. Adding the twist, and then varying the starting shape, and then mixing the blocks (different starting shapes within the same finished work) essentially squares the # of colorway options available to the textile worker.

This book contains enough examples of finished quilts to give you an idea of what can be done with the shapes. Each finished quilt is accompanied with a line drawing of the pieces so you can work out your own colorways.

I like infinite possibilities. Now to find the time to play with them all...

A challenge.......2005-09-24

This book has some very challenging techniques and quilts. The opportunity to be exceptionally creative is there if you wish or you can follow a pattern as shown and create a very personal quilt. I have really enjoyed reading through it and look forward to using it to create. It is not for the beginner nor for those who are afraid of color.

I purchased this book having seen Bonnie demonstrate the twisted log cabin and just fell in love with it. I have been searching for a log cabin pattern for quite sometime and just happened to tune into Simply Quilting show on tv and saw the different patterns that are displayed in this book. The colored photos and instructions are very easily understood. This is a must have book.

Considering the price I paid for this, it was a decent value. It does not have as much as I wanted, but what it has is useful.

And too expensive! This book is a small (5x7) spiral bound notebook that came out in 1997. Nothing about using a digital camera obviously. The pictures are small, B&W, and grainy. $24.95 is asking way too much for an outdated book that is lean on information to start with. I had hoped to get more info on shooting traffic collisions but there are only 5 pages!

64 pages of obvious materials. Take photos from all perspectives. Take close up photos of evidence. Document all photos. I know, amazing isn't it (sarcasm). How someone can find this book "enlightening" that doesn't have an interest in its sale, is questionable to if they are competent as an investigator.

That's the substance of the book with some basic mentioning to photographic technique that any novice with a few months would know or have access to. There is little substance to this book. Look elsewhere for information.

ESSENTIAL PART OF A SOCO KIT.......2002-04-30

Having just started as a Scenes of Crime Officer with Leicestershire Constabulary, in January this year, and successfully completed my 9 week initial training course at NTC, Durham, I find this book a very helpful guide for photographing evidence at crime scenes. This book deals with many different kinds of things I have yet to encounter/experience as I am only now just starting to go out on my own, having been tutored for the past month or so. I recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to do this type of photography and to those who use photography in the job.

This book is a great introduction to the subject of crime scene and evidence photography as the pictures contained therein are excellent and the beginner is not overwhelmed by technical jargon. Although slightly high in price, I feel the book is still worth owning and it is a precious part of my SOCO kit and use the useful information provided when out in the field.

I like the fact that the book is spiral bound and easy to handle; I like the style and format of the book especially the diagrams and helpful step-by-step check lists and sample photographs.

SCANDALOUS TO SAY THE LEAST.......2005-07-21

MAXION 4 ends things with a BANG!

The goofy sci-fi plot wraps up nicely, which then leaves room for the comedic aspects which finish the book (and the series). Overweight Umehara is in love with Yumi, but he doesn't let that get in the way of his lusting over the amnesiac Professor Nishimura, who is VERY buxom (to say the least!)

As usual, Mr. Takebayashi's art is top-notch, and his women are definitely in the same league as Satoshi Urishihara's. From top to bottom (no pun intended), every woman is gorgeous.

At the end of the day, MAXION is a light-hearted sci-fi comedy that's jam-packed with busty babes and belly laffs. Have fun with it!

A REAL MAN!.......2002-05-20

The only bad thing I can say about this book is that on a very few occasions Semmes tends to get into some scholarly explanations about natural phenomena that, while interesting, slow the pace of the reading some.

Otherwise, Semmes tells of his adventures on the high seas with clarity and wit. The book's first few chapters give his legally sound (Semmes was also a lawyer) justifications of the Southern case for secession and his participation in the preparation for equipping a navy from practically nothing.

The Alabama's defeat of the iron-plated USS Hatteras and the final battle with the USS Kearsarge are there in detail in addition to the tale of her very successful commerce raiding upon the civilian commerce of the North.

Contrary to the rabid Northern newspapers of the time, Semmes reveals himself and his officers to be the gentlemanly knights of the high seas in stark contrast to the conniving Federal consuls who, in nearly every port, attempted to foil the Confederate sailors' coaling and supplying of the ship despite international maritime law that allowed it.

Semmes most effectively fought the mercantile world empire of the Union, all the while working within the confines of maritime law. (The few actions of his that were officially disputed were eventually settled in his favour.) This, again, is in contrast to the Federal navy that, under Welles' and Seward's leadership, played the bully and ignored international law when it was inconvenient.

The CSS Alabama (along with a few other CS ships) virtually shut down the US merchant marine -- a blow from which it never fully recovered. His fight with the Kearsarge proved to be the last best use of a ship that was otherwise bound to be blockaded in port by the Federal navy (that proved itself remarkably inept, apparently cowardly, and negligent in its mission to stop Semmes).

A brilliant piece.......2000-03-14

In another life Semmes might have been a poet or artist. Circumstances forced him to become the greatest seaman in the 19th century. I have read from an independant source that Kaiser Wilhelm insisted his high ranking officers read this book in preperation for the First World War. The Norths hypocracy is shameful. This book is by far the greatest review written by anyone on either side of the war. Sadly political correctness has kept Semmes greatness buried at this point.

Excellent insight into the thoughts of a naval hero........1999-11-03

I found this book to be a refreshing insight into the exploits of one of the most interesting naval men of his era. Semmes comes across as a man that prizes duty to his beliefs as the soul motivation to his actions. This dispels any of the myth that he was a pirate as often historicaly believed.While many pages are devoted to navigation and tidal patterns,which can be a bit boring to the non-seaman, the book is excellent overall.

The book begins with an arguement for states rights which history has failed to record as the primary cause of the civil war. He goes into a detailed analysis of his beliefs and he reflects the thinking of his times. His story then goes into detail of his exploits as the greatest privateer in the history of naval warfare. Had he been on the winning side his name would be mentioned in the same breath as Grant and Sherman. Can anyone name one US naval officer that served in the civil war? His story takes the reader from Annapolis to New Orleans to the South Pacific to Gibraltar and to the final demise of the CSS Alabama off the coast of France. His tale explains his actions and defends them with an indepth look at maritime law. He explains the laws involved with a detail and style that makes it easy for anyone to understand. His story should not be allowed to fade into past. It is something from a terrible time that should be looked at by naval officers today. He is a man to be honored, not cast away as a pirate

A brilliant defensive, counter attacker..........2006-09-15

General Johnston does not receive the attention he should from historians of the civil war, partly because Jefferson Davis attempted to slander his entire career from losing supplies at Mannassas, to not breaking the seige at Vicksburg, and even questioned his willingness to fight at Atlanta. Where he was relieved of command by Davis who appointed Hood who virtually deystroyed the army of Tennessee in fruitless attacks on superior union forces that bordered on suicide. Johnston defends himself againt these charges thru the entire book, he lays out several battle plans which where never carried out, such as his plan for the Penninsula campaign vs McClellan in 1862, he also goes into detail about his Atlanta campaign againt Sherman where perhaps one of the greatest defensive movements ever was witnessed, using his 40,000 or so poorly armed,and clothed men slowed a army of 110,000 men for well over a month while inflicting roughly 40,000 casulties, after reading about this it seems that if left in command at Atlanta he would have worn Sherman down when he tried to assualt the works built around Atlanta and then Johnston would have attacked and perhaps deystroyed his army since it was over 100 miles from its base and would have had great difficulty returning if defeated. Then perhaps he could have turned North and united with Lee in defense of Richmond of course that can never be known for sure but history could have been very different at least for 1865. Napoleon said "The logical conclusion to defensive warfare is defeat" but after listening to some of Johnston's logic and ideas I'm not so sure, worthy of any civil war library.

Broad brush on Red-White warfare.......2001-12-24

Alan Axelrod has used a broad brush approach to chronicle the Red-White conflicts of North America from earliest times through to 1890.

The album-style book, with boxed articles to complement the main story, gives the reader a good overview of the conflicts and personalities and this, plus a good chronology and bibliography, points the reader to a more detailed reading of specific eras. Because of Axelrod's book, together with a recent visit to South Dakota and New Mexico, my interest to read more on Native American history has been stimulated, particularly the warfare on the Plains, from the 1860s to 1890, during the period of the great Lakota chief Red Cloud, (plus Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull).

The colonial period, for which I have had an abiding passion is also well covered including King Philip's War (1675-6), a war that pro-rata of population was the most savage fought on American soil; plus the revolutionary struggles of the great Loyalist Indian, Joseph Brant.

I thought I had detected a minor error when the author had a sub-heading claiming King William's War (1689-97) started in 1688, which was a bit difficult as the Orangeman did not take the crown off James II until the end of that year and the war really commenced the following year. However, the author qualifies it in the text to say the early skirmishing was known as the Abnaki War with intensification taking place in North America after the European conflict commenced in 1689.
Also a book of 280 pages covering such a vast period can, by definition, only give an overview of the period.

Nevertheless Axelrod has produced an entertaining chronicle of periods of intensely interesting, if often forgotten, aspects of American history.

Rael is great if 100% of what he says is correct. read all of Rael's books (out of fairness), then read others like Riley Martin's The Coming of Tan .. read them all with a critical mind. they all may be insane - or, there may be elements of truth from each of them. i think a person must use their own judgment :) in any case, Rael's predictions won't be verifiable (by his own testimony) for another 20 years .. by then, they will have created this 'spaceport' (palace) and for what? in time, the truth will be known .. Riley's, on the other hand, predictions will be verified/dismissed by 2011 which is only five years away! whatever the case, i feel sorry for humanity if any of their predictions come true .. and i feel sorry for blind followers if they don't.. bottom line - use your own judgment! :)

I'm currently reading this book for the 2nd time - the 1st time was rather hard-going. Whilst the book is an unusual one & some of the claims are quite laughable, the subject matter is very interesting & thought-provoking. Not being religious in any way, shape or form, it has NOT influenced my own personal philosophy.

This book is what scientists today can use to fight religious acts against them. Rael is one of the messiahs of science. Religous people should especially read this book!

This book is actually a correction of the bible. Traces of UFOs and aliens can be found in many religions and arts in the past. A lot of this can be found in this book. What the whole world forgets is that Rael wasn't the first who told the world about this. For example: Babylon.

The oldest bible in the world is atheistic and there was no God in that bible but "Elohim" which means "Those who came from the sky". Rael claims to have had an encounter with the Elohim; which is actually an extraterrestrial human race who created all life on Earth through genetic engineering. These extraterrestrials are themselves created by other human aliens but they believe that their creators are destroyed. However, according to Rael, the Elohim dictated to him a few messages that are written in this book. They are very amusing, interesting and educational. The Elohim is ready to come down to Earth in public but to do this, we must be ready as well. To be ready, we must love and live in peace and a few other things that are written in this book. Finally, at the end of the book, it gets really religous and less scientific. My advise is to check out this updated bible. Gods and angels on clouds are now replaced by aliens in flying saucers!

So many answers to so many questions........2003-01-12

Who created our creators? The answer given in the book is that our creators were created by their own creators. However our creators lost contact with their own creators and believe that their civilisation was destroyed. When this occured an ark of knowledge automatically descended to their civilisation so that Human knowledge could be continued. It is the fear of this broken link re-occuring that motivated the Elohim to create and nuture us hoping that we will evolve to the point were we can be entrusted with their knowledge.

How far back could we conceivably trace the creators of creators of creators etc? The answer must be Infinity for that is the size of the Universe and is therefore the length of time. This book illustrates that you need to replace the concept of GOD with that of our scientific creators and the concept of Infinity.

Intellectual, thought provoking........2003-01-10

Whether or not you agree with the material contained within the pages of this book, one must admit that the profound implications should they be true are monstrous. Should Rael be genuine and sincere, this will single handedly alter the history of manking as we know it.

I recommend reading this work of literature if for no other reason than to educate your self on one of the most misunderstood religious movements on the world scene today.

And to the previous reviewer who asked "Who created the extraterrestrials?" My question to you is who created God? If you can believe that God just is, was, and always will be, then how can you not leave your mind open to the possibility of the same with the "extraterrestrials?"
