Timeless Home Designs.......2007-03-23
This book is beautifully photographed and well written. It is a perfect example of how new homes can be constructed to have the timeless appeal of historical properties by using old and new materials and thoughtful intrepetation of historical designs. Mr. Town's homes are the kind that can be handed down from generation to generation due to their quailty and beauty. Mr. Town's residential projects should be an inspiration to those considering building a new home in any price range. It is the design that counts.
Louisiana Homes.......2007-03-23
Being born and raised in SE Louisiana just outside of New Orleans I really enjoyed the homes presented. I am currently planning to build our home here in the Houston suburbs and the ideas presented are awesome!!!
Wonderful architect.......2007-01-29
We are building a new home with the Hays Town Louisiana houses as inspiration. His style should translate well to rural Atlanta. But we have to pass on the German Shepherd.
Great Coffee Table Material.......2006-11-13
My wife loves the A. Hays Town homes, and this book is a nice representation of his work. A good coffee table item for guests to view.
Excellent view.......2006-11-12
I found this book to be exactly the view of Hays Town's work that I wanted to see.

as easy as it gets.......2007-09-03
This is a must. As easy as it gets art book that promotes development in every sense (not just artistic). Projects are simple yet sophisticated, the whole family can have really good fun with it. And as a plus, it often requires little or no intervention, so you can watch football (or quilt) and let the kid(s) play.
The whole series is about evenly great, just can't go wrong with it.
Lots of fun...........2007-01-23
My 6 year old and I have a lot of fun with this book. I am no artist, so I really enjoy learning and these are fairly simple. We were on a family vacation and drew for several hours making monsters and adding backgrounds and bodies or Princess/Kings and castles. It was very entertaining. We even tried using the simple shapes to come up with our own faces. We also got the train/truck book for my sign, BUT it's a lot more complicated.
Fair teaching, poor content.......2007-01-16
I was rather dissappointed at the content offered and barely impressed at the book's attempt at teaching new skills. I bought the book for my 5, 7 and 9 year old children and the 9 year-old had already mastered all of the skills offered, the 7 year-old was bored very quickly and only the 5 year old's attention was held any length of time, but his age group lacks the concetration level to hang on for long. The content was far too simple and barely progressed through the entire book...this book should be marketed to only highly introverted 4-6 year-olds in my opinion, and then it would get only 3 stars....
Great Book for Teaching Expressions!.......2007-01-11
My 5 1/2 and 4 1/2 year old sons LOVE these books, I am amazed at what they have learned to draw, and they enjoy creating their own versions of the faces shown in the book. My 2 1/2 year old daughter really likes to point out her favorite monsters for all of us to draw for her. This book encourages creativity and independent artistry!
Ed Emberliy's Drawing Book of Faces.......2007-01-11
It is an easy way to follow a drawing process. Kids love this book and the artist has touched little children's lives.

Customer Reviews:
OK, but not great.......2003-11-30
I've been reading several books on the subject, and while this one seems reasonably complete it falls down in alot of areas. The authors starts some technical discussions and leaves the reader hanging. Some parts were really confusing, like the section on NLE software.
As a general overview to the process of making DV movies, it was ok, and easy to read. It almost appears the the author was trying to create a book which was a technical how to guide, and an overview to the process, but never fully explained both.
Good advice, but thin in parts.......2003-02-05
It's easy to tell the author has experience behind the camera. But the book seems thin in parts, perhaps where he's less well grounded--camcorder controls and post techniques, for example. This book was used as the text in a DV production course I took, but the lecturer had a lot more information than it does. I think it was one of the few books on this topic at the time they designed the course, but there are a lot more books on DV out there now.
Who's in the audience?.......2002-06-06
I've given this book a middle rating because I'm not sure what category of reader is its intended target. It mentions "first time filmmakers" but few start at that point. If it's aimed at the rank beginner who's trying to find a handhold, I'd rate it lower. If it's aimed at those who are knee-deep in the process, or is meant to supplement instruction, I might rate it higher.
As someone just beginning to look into digital filmmaking, I bought this book along with Digital Filmmaking 101. I'm glad I bought DF 101. Digital Video, on the other hand, is destined to be donated to my local and impoverished library. Another book-buying lesson learned.
I don't think of it as a really bad book, or an unbalanced book, and if I were more familiar with digital video I might appreciate it more--or less, depending on how correct the information is. As it is, I finished reading it and felt as if I'd gained little "stick to the ribs" information from it. The chapters after chapter 7 seemed especially unsuited to the beginner.
It may be that the book tries to cover too much territory. Obviously, shooting a movie--even with DV--is a complex process where a lot can go wrong. Making a book complex (not necessarily detailed) isn't likely to work well with the person new to the process, especially if the editing isn't up to par.
I suspect the approach taken by DF 101, combined with further reading on various elements of the craft, will serve most of those readers better.
The book comes with a CD, the contents of which are unknown to me, as it appeared to be lightly scuffed and was unreadable in four CD-ROMs, even after cleaning. Hopefully an isolated case.
Everything you need to know about DV.......2002-03-27
Many people have praised this book and I do also. This is a must have book for digital (I recommend reading it with Feature Filmmaking at Used-Car Prices : How to Write, Produce, Direct, Shoot, Edit, and Promote a Feature-Lenth Movie for Less Than $15,000 by Rick Schmidt)
And though I don't mean to discourage anyone from buying it, I have to say that the editing section Chapter 8 is confusing.
I wish the author had taken the approach--here's how I do it and then followed his own path, then suggested other starting points and gone through those. What he did was put a whole lot of stuff that apply to a whole lot of different methods in a big jumble without any hint of how to follow them (or if you should follow them) to the end.
The rest of the book is great, though an index would have helped.
Did You Honestly Read This Book?.......2002-02-28
We used Maxie's book as a textbook for an introduction to digital moviemaking class I took last semester. I finished reading the book the first week of class, it was so easy to read! When we started shooting our short films, most of the people in the class had the book on set with them. The glossary alone is filled with useful information. Out of more than 20 people in the class, there was never one complaint about the book. I think the teacher is using it again this semester. I leant my copy to a friend who ended up buying her own copy. I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
Using pagan prose fiction produced in Greek and Latin during the early Christian era, Bowersock investigates the complex relationship among perceived and presented "historical" and "fictional" truths. Bowersock's superb lecturing style is successfully transferred into writing with force and eloquence, as he weaves accounts from a wide range of sources into his text, illuminating social attitudes of the period and persuasively arguing that fiction of the period was influenced by the emerging Christian Gospel narratives.
In the second half of the first century emerges a new kind of fiction including outlandish tales of travel, romance and comic novels. Bowersock concentrates on secular literature, illuminating not only its literary motifs, but also reconstructing the societal context as one engrossed in fabrications and all kinds of revisions or rewriting. Using these less familiar materials as his points of reference, he reads into familiar Christian material, making linkages and casting new light on familiar subjects, as well as providing some provocative interpretations of familiar Christian texts.
Bowersock uses close historical and literary analyses of specific passages of works, and pays attention to larger and more general issues and questions around the relationship between fiction and history and how we read them. This book will be of basic intellectual concern to all raised in the environment of Christian belief.
Customer Reviews:
This is Momigliano.......2002-04-22
First, please note that Amazon has put in the wrong book descriptions here. This is *not* a book by Bowersock, about pagan fiction. [Perhaps that is Bowersock's "Fiction As History"]. What "Studies" is is a posthumous collection of academic articles about historians, written by Arnaldo Momigliano (and *edited* by Bowersock and Cornell).
Momigliano was an eminent historian. He received the MacArthur "Genius" award in 1987, while a visting professor at the Univ. of Chicago. He died later that year. One of Momigliano's passions was writing biographical studies of historians, such as those collected here.
The historians covered in each essay are: Creuzer, Grote, Rostovtzeff, Burckhardt, De Sanctis, Syme, Croce, Beloch, Bernays, Droysen, Coulanges, Reinhardt, Eduard Schwartz, E. A. Freeman, Eduard Meyer, Niebuhr, Dumezil, Muller, and Bachofen. The essays are presented in order in which they were written, from 1946 until Momigliano's death.
I have in fact only read chapter 16 so far ("New Paths of Classicism in the Nineteenth Century"), and appreciated it greatly. I felt compelled to put in an accurate description of the book's contents because Amazon had so clearly made a mistake. When I can finish the whole book I hope to write a more complete review.

Good to know Sir Alex, Not for learning manegerial technic.......2004-04-16
Originally, I was keen to learn how Sir Alex F. have made the Man United Team in to world class and a successful one in term of trophies winning and also building up the Man United brand.
However , the book allocate huges space in telling stories of what were going on , how Sir Alex comment about it and how people involved comment about it. In managerial point of view , the book tells me a lot about Sir Alex F.'s caring and his aggressiveness to people under and around him , his determination, discipline , passion and his aggressiveness in achieving his goals and how he uses his anger to get his goals achieved. They are about his characters but not managerial technic that I was looking for.
I want to say here that I am not commenting this book against the book's title or objective but reviewing the book against my own requirement on my Management Technic learning.
Therefore , my last words are this book is good for people who want to learn his life, his view, his personality , Manchester United Team history which I have learned a lot from the book. But I learn not much about Sir Alex's great thoughts behind his great moves he have been making to make the team successful.
At the end, the book made me "in to" the English football industry more that I have ever been.

Book Description
Known to its pilots as the 'last of the gunfighters' due to its quartet of Colt-Browning Mk 12 20 mm cannon, the F-8 Crusader was numerically the most populous fighter in the US Navy at the start of America's involvement in the Vietnam conflict in 1964 – some 482 F-8C/D/Es equipped 17 frontline units. It enjoyed great success against North Vietnamese Mig-17s and Mig-21s during the Rolling Thunder campaign of 1965-68, officially downing 18 jets, which represented 53 per cent of all Mig claims lodged by Navy squadrons during this period.

F-8 Crusader Units of the Vietnam War (Osprey Combat Aircraft 7).......2006-03-18
Book is well written with great photo's and illstrations. Facts are excellent. If you like the Crusader. This is a must!
The last of the gunfighters!
F-8 s forever!!.......2001-05-24
The F-8 Crusader will go down in aviation history as a classic warplane, captured on TV and in print media as the chief aerial protagonist in a number of conflicts in the '60s. From the Cuban crisis, to the Vietnam war, the F-8 was the Navy's last single seat fighter - the 'Gunfighter' - until the F-18 appeared some twenty years later. Mersky is a veteran Crusader fanatic, with other like titles to his credit, and he continues to delve into the details of F-8s, and F-8 service. What makes this book a standout is the focus on the F-8 drivers, as well as the aircraft and units. For anybody who is interested in a unique period of US Naval aviation, this is a must! This book looks good, has great historical anecdotes and good illustrations. In Australia, it is a very expensive paperback, but still - no pay(n), no gain!

American Indian history.......2007-06-27
Very informative and shocking to those that are unaware of the American Indians' oppression by the government.
Repetitive.......2002-11-21
Not only is the Text out of date Berkhofer never goes anywhere with his ideas. He just ends up repeating himself over and over until they have lost all meaning. It is amazing to me that a book that has no point could ever get published.
A case of mistaken geography.......2001-09-19
Robert Berkhofer writes in his excellent book (The White Man's Indian: Images of the American Indian from Columbus to the Present), the discourse of "Indian-ness" is a Euro-American construction. Indigenous peoples of the Americas did not think of themselves as belonging to some unified group of "Indians" or "Native Americans." That was a Columbus invention and like they say, the rest is history. Conversely, aboriginal peoples deemed themselves Dineh (Navajo) or Nuche (Utes), but certainly not "Indians." The category of "Indian" is an error of geography.
The Euro-American construction of a pan-Indian concept and "lumping" all tribes together led to tragedy on a grand scale. Some children from one group (or tribe) would steal a couple of cows from a wagon train. A few days later, miles down the trail, other "Indians" might appear. The white pioneers would shoot in retribution for the theft - firing at people who had nothing to do with it, and indeed, at people who might well have been glad to join in a raid against the tribe that had committed the theft. The lack of complexity is something the dominant White Euro-American culture had been prepared for is one of Berkhofers arguments. Berkhofer presents his case and does this with a list of examples and scholarly deftness to make it obvious and easy to relate to.
The problem was ignorance but more importantly, it was based upon an agenda of Otherness. "They" are not like "Us". "They" are a threat to "Us". "We" need to make them good Americans. We don't really understand "Them" what is there to understand. The conception of Indian changes over time a classic example of an Episteme. Indicating that the conception of the "Indian" was really more an indication of how the White population saw themselves. The effects of oversimplification, lumping and misplaced sense of nationalism (which was really "Individualism") resulted in what was almost a complete physical destruction of not a cultural one. The white conception of "Indians" is racism, pure and simple - lumping together the large and very diverse peoples on the continent. Berhofer takes us there. the white man's indian: images of the american indian..........2000-06-10
berkhofer does a good job explaining the history of the image that caucasian's have of the native american. the only drawback is that it was written 23 years ago and the reader must keep reminding themselves of this fact when faced with outdated material concerning public opinion and/or lack of scholarly developments and discoveries of native society.

Book Description
Since the eighteenth century when natural historians created the idea of distinct racial categories, scientific findings on race have been a double-edged sword. For some antiracists, science holds the promise of one day providing indisputable evidence to help eradicate racism. On the other hand, science has been enlisted to promote racist beliefs ranging from a justification of slavery in the eighteenth century to the infamous twentieth-century book, The Bell Curve, whose authors argued that racial differences in intelligence resulted in lower test scores for African Americans.
This well-organized, readable textbook takes the reader through a chronological account of how and why racial categories were created and how the study of "race" evolved in multiple academic disciplines, including genetics, psychology, sociology, and anthropology. In a bibliographic essay at the conclusion of each of the book's seven sections, the authors recommend primary texts that will further the reader's understanding of each topic. Heavily illustrated and enlivened with sidebar biographies, this text is ideal for classroom use.
