In the late '90s, publishers began to race to get a book out that would cater to the explosive interest in all things midcentury modern. There was Classic Modern, Naturally Modern, and Modernism Rediscovered, to name just a few of the better ones. With the publication of this volume by regular Architectural Digest contributor Michael Webb, we finally have a book that not only provides a plethora of design ideas we can steal for use in our very own living rooms, but also tells the often-captivating behind-the-scenes stories of each great home it showcases.

The focus here is on the saving of these houses, and Webb's text is wonderfully insightful. One of the 35 spectacular homes featured is celebrated architect John Lautner's Harvey House in Los Angeles, the very same once-dilapidated house (the book captures it in its newly restored state) over which actor Leonardo DiCaprio went head to head in a bidding war (and lost) with actress Kelly Lynch and her husband, screenwriter Mitch Glazer.

The house is a work in progress, full of difficult judgment calls. The expanded kitchen may be cut back and the original St. Charles cabinets reinstalled. The rotunda will be refined and there is a possibility of recreating the aluminum-framed glass breakfast nook--a kind of high-tech gazebo--originally located under the pergola. Meanwhile the owners and their small daughter adore living here. "At night, we can look all the way through and out at the lights of the city," says Lynch. "I find myself caught up in the spirit of the place, wander about, and forget I'm in the middle of watching a movie!"
Newly commissioned photography by Roger Straus, known for his panoramic shots of Frank Lloyd Wright structures, is another highlight. Designed and built in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s by architects such as Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, Philip Johnson, Eero Saarinen, John Lautner, H.H. Harris, Gregory Ain, Paul Rudolph, John Black Lee, Allyn E. Morris, and Ulrich Franzen, the 35 homes presented here are some of the most sought after in America. If you're into modern or want to know what all the fuss is about, this is the book you'll want to own. --Richard Olsen

Book Description

In the first book of its kind, architectural critic Michael Webb and Esto photographer Roger Strauss III examine 35 extraordinary modern houses that have been restored, enhanced, or extended by new owners who see them as timeless classics. Built in the heyday of modernism, from the 1930s through the early 1960s, these houses were designed by exceptional architects for themselves or for adventurous clients. A few were lovingly preserved as time capsules, but most endured years of neglect or abuse and might easily have been torn down.

Webb explores how these houses were created--as daring experiments or as creative responses to site and climate--and here are villas that fuse craft and invention, machines for living, and residences that embrace the landscape. Here, too, are houses inspired by the purity of classical temples, and frugal dwellings that have been sensitively enlarged. After a long eclipse, these houses and the enlightened attitudes they embody are being rediscovered by creative individuals searching for distinctive, open, light-filled places to live. Modernism is a way of living, more than a style, and this book celebrates the architects and owners who respect its character and scale.

Also included are nearly 200 photographs taken by Roger Strauss, all of which were specially commissioned for this book.

4 out of 5 stars Mid-Century Modern .......2007-08-08

If you want a strong, national (not just LA or Palm Springs) overview of mid-century modern, this is a good bet. Very well produced, beautiful imagery.

4 out of 5 stars A Peek at many Architectural Rarities.......2006-12-02

The author provides a good overview of the history and restoration of 35 architecturally significant houses
of the 1930's through mid-century. The only thing keeping it from getting a 5 star rating is it's small format,
resulting in smallish pictures and smaller floor plans. These wonderful houses deserved a larger page size,
say 12" x 12", to show them to the best advantage. Still, given it's relatively modest price, this book provides
a lot of information between the covers.

4 out of 5 stars Homes of the Brave.......2005-08-27

We are in danger of losing our mid-century domestic architectural heritage.

Yesterday's flat-roof, ultra-modern "home of tomorrow" is often perceived as the cramped and impractical "teardown" of today. Most real estate agents will confide that "Modern doesn't sell," and those modernist homes that are sold are usually fodder for the bulldozer; razed and discarded to make way for another McMansion.

Sometimes it seems that the only folks who have any fondness for "Home, Sleek Home" are advertising directors (who love to feature hip mid-century homes in TV commercials and print ads), and subscribers to Dwell Magazine (and subscribers to the Dwell Magazine lifestyle).

In his book MODERNISM REBORN: Mid-Century American Houses, architectural critic Michael Webb demonstrates that there is a growing appreciation for cutting-edge American residential architecture of the 1930s through the 1960s, and in it he highlights the intrepid homeowners who've assumed stewardship of 35 of these "Contemporary" domiciles of long, long ago. Tersely written, illustrated with floor plans, and enlivened by nearly 200 color photos by noted architectural photographer Roger Strauss III, MODERNISM REBORN explores the unique histories of these homes, and chronicles the research, labor, and expense that the adventurous owners have lavished on their preservation, restoration and sometimes, expansion.

Nearly all of the 20th Century architectural greats are represented here--Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, Philip Johnson and R.M. Schindler--as well as iconic modernist structures such as Pierre Koenig's Case Study House #21, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Farnsworth House, and Charles and Ray Eames' own home-studio. Webb presents homes that embody various modernist impulses in thematic chapters that prove that there was no one right way (or Wright way) to be "modern."

Webb's survey argues a case for Modernism as a mode (or ideal) of living, rather than a mere style (or styles). Indeed, these light-filled, open plan, spartanly furnished "homes of the brave" imply an enlightened lifestyle of Zen-like purity somewhat at odds with the ever more acquisitive and materialistic American way of life.

Don't read too much into the Modernist rejection of consumerism, however, because these designer homes were status symbols in their day, and to furnish a home with "Modern classics" like Le Corbusier's Petit Confort sofa, the Eames lounge chair and ottoman, and a pair of Mies Barcelona chairs will set you back several grand. Modern don't come cheap.

Ultimately, the stories that Webb weaves about the people that commissioned, designed, built, restored and live in these homes are every bit as enlightening and memorable as the homes themselves. In fact, the author makes their histories seem inseparable, as if house and owner are joined in partnership against philistine taste, obnoxious neighbors, natural (and unnatural) disasters, and metal fatigue.

This is not a scholarly study, but Webb assumes a certain level of cultural awareness and familiarity with architectural terms in his reader. It is a fine book with a fresh look at a perhaps overly familiar subject, and is well worth owning for the photos alone.

Reading MODERNISM REBORN makes one wonder how the home of 1950 will inform and inspire the home of 2050, the mid-century home of tomorrow.

5 out of 5 stars Fifties elegance.......2004-02-16

I bought this interesting book because I wanted something that would cover, visually, the best of mid-century American architecture. As another reviewer has said, don't expect a full technical account of the background to these beautiful houses but if you want excellent exterior and interior photos in a well designed and printed book, 'Modernism reborn' is the one to get.

The fact that these thirty-five houses have all been restored in some way gives the book extra interest. Many of them were featured in the architectural press years ago when they were first built and these are the photos you usually see in books. Some of them were neglected but fortunately the current owners thought restoration worthwhile and this is how Roger Straus photographed them.

An interesting companion book to 'Modernism reborn' is Classic Modern: Midcentury Modern At Home by Deborah K Dietsch, not directly concerned with the architecture but more to do with the furniture, fabrics, lighting and style that made these houses such wonderful homes. If only I could afford to live in one!

I'm surprised at the raves for this book. It is well produced. The photos are terrific. But: The building descriptions do little more than cheer-lead. He raves about features which are not illustrated. Most of the buildings only get 4 photos. The plans provided are far too small, usually only one plan is provided, though most of the buildings have more than one level. In at least one case the plans are mislabled. I'd only recommend this book to somebody who only wants a catalog of names. Still waiting for a really good book about mid-century modern architecture. This isn't it.

    Book Description

This century has witnessed an explosion in the number of art movements and schools that have emerged and contemporary artists breaking traditional boundaries. In more than 350 essays, the most popular movements-Surrealism, Expressionism, and Pop Art--are discussed alongside recent experiments in new media like video art, and environmetal art. This volume is an ideal way to explore the artistic movements of the 20th-century and to discover the origins and aims of such intriguing movements as the Donkey's Tail, and the Stupid School.

This unprecedented book draws together biographies of artists who worked in one of the most exciting and dramatic political eras in France, when Paris became the artistic capital of Europe. It features in-depth studies of such well-known Neo-classical artists as Jacques-Louis David, and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, the artist most revered by his fellow countrymen. Also included are artists of the Romantic Movement, like Delacroix and Gericault, as well as the painters of the Barbizon School, whose plein-air landscapes anticipated those of the Impressionists.

    Book Description

As images of men's bodies have proliferated in pop culture and advertising during the past decade, many artists and photographers have taken up the male nude as a primary subject. Recent work has sparked controversy as well as praise for its shocking frankness, and the line between art and pornography has become increasingly difficult to define. New digital technologies have brought about new ways of representing the body, and we are now faced with a multiplicity of eroticisms, previously unexplored channels of desire, and more inclusive and varied body ideals.

Male Nudes Now offers an essential guide through this new territory with more than 240 fresh and provocative images. Featuring contemporary work, mostly unpublished, this important sourcebook showcases a dynamic mix of visionaries, from established masters to breakthrough newcomers.

5 out of 5 stars A Definitive Collection of the Best Contemporary Work.......2006-01-04

"As old taboos have lifted in the past fifteen years, an increasing number of pioneering photographers and artists have taken up the male nude form as a primary subject. Though there have numerous monographs, there has been no comprehensive look at the new work in this field--until now. Male Nude Now presents for the first time a definitive collection of the best contemporary work on the male figure. No other book has approached the scope and heft of this volume, which boasts more than two hundred images from the most promising artists today. ¶ Culled from Galleries and museums around the world, the stellar contributor list includes new and established names including: Duane Michals, John Dugdale, Clive Barker, Chuck Close, Pierre et Gilles, Tom Bianchi, Francesco Scavullo, Jeff Burton, Greg Gorman, Christopher Makos and Reed Massengill. A powerfully erotic and intelligent package for admirers of the male physique--and aren`t we all?"--© zebraz

    5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2005-04-16

This is a great book for when (if you're a male) want to see some nude men.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Is Addictive!.......2003-09-23

Mr. Leddick has outdone himself on this one. With over 100 artists represented, this is one of the most inclusive collections of male nudes I have seen. There are photographers, painters and sculptors represented. The only requirement seems to be that the artist be living. Several of those represented are well-known, Greg Gorman, George Dureau, Michael Leonard, Tom Bianchi, Christopher Makos, Arthur Tress, Nan Goldein, John Dugdale, Chuck Close, David Hockney and Don Barchardy, to name a few. But most of the artists are unknown-- at least to me. There is literally every kind of nude male you can imagine here and some you probably didn't. Mr. Leddick arranges the art in what seems a rather arbitrary grouping to me: experimentalists, neoclassicists, eroticists, fantasists, sensualists, realists and romanticists. He could just as easily have grouped the artists alphabetically, for my money.

There are a couple of dozen previously unknown artists I was crazy about. I particularly liked Steve Underhill, Jack Balas and Terry Gaskins. (There is a brief paragraph about each artist with a small photo included with each work of art; then there are addresses for the artists printed as well.)I would love to have seen all the people who got culled, or at least those who deserve honorable mention.

My only complaint about this beautiful book is that it is printed in a paperback edition only. You certainly want this one to last.

    3 out of 5 stars Sampling -- It's a Fleeting Bite of a lot of Photographers.......2002-12-03

I'm sure that the artist photographers are masters in their field. However, the sampling introduced in this book barely made my mouth water (with the odd exception), let alone drool.

If you're serious about photography, and less about the depiction of male beauty, this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Buy two copies.......2002-06-26

Gay men might be well advised to buy two copies of this book because the first one's pages are likely to be stuck together in no time (you know what I mean). Page after page of gorgeous male bodies!!! Beautiful!!! Women ought to appreciate this too.

First, let me say that this book is quite pricey .... I... Having said this, I found the book very helpful. It outlines how KIDS CARE CLUB was founded and how you can start your own version. I first learned about Kids Care through a brief notice in the business/tech section of my local newspaper which mentioned the Kids Care website. Kids Care Clubs offer kids and youth opportunities to serve those in their communities through a wide variety of hands-on projects. The book outlines how Kids Care got its start in Connecticut. The book also contained a number of possible service projects for a Kids Care Club to consider. What I found especially helpful was the insight the author shared on which types of service projects were most meaningful to the kids.

5 out of 5 stars A great look at the Yugoslav conflict........2005-12-20

Personally, I think that Misha Glenny is one of the best writers on the Balkans. I have spent three years living in the Balkans so I know something about the area. I highly recommend reading his work The Balkans first as it gives great insight into the region. However, if you are only interested in the war than this work can certainly stand alone. The book chronicles events from August 1990 to June 1993. In addition, an epilogue was added in 1996. While it does not cover the most recent aftermath for the time it covers the book is excellent.

Glenny obviously understands the Balkan mentality and adroitly discusses many of the errors that the international community made in dealing with the conflict. In addition, he made some accurate predictions and warnings. In particular he discusses his concern about Macedonia in the epilogue written in 1996. Fighting broke out briefly in 2001 and security remains an issue. Glenny's experience as a correspondent for the BBC gave him the opportunity to interview all the most important players and his writing makes his work accessible to the larger populace. This is the best book on the war.

4 out of 5 stars A very good account of what happened in the Balkans.......2005-04-26

Misha Glenny's book offers a really good account of the forces which shaped the Balkan conflict. I have a much clearer idea now of the causes of the conflict, and of the various turning points and missed opportunities. This book seems very unbiased. The author seems apalled by the crimes that take place, but does not focus on attempting to list or catalog them. I do think that you will need another book to fully understand the high-level forces at work (US. UN, NATO, etc.) Perhaps Death of a Nation by Laura Silber (which I haven't read). Deliver Us From Evil, by William Shawcross does a really good job of explaining those things in the context of other events happening at the same time (Somalia, Rwanda, etc.). Also, Glenny's book is a bit dense, so it's not exactly an easy read

          3 out of 5 stars Uninterestingly Interesting...............2005-03-21

I find it Unintelligently interesting how the world are now masters at our own history, especially the English,
and now know all about the Balkans.
You read a book or two, and believe you know what's right and and what's not.

It's obvious who the culprits were, though as time progressed within the situation, is when all 3 became relatively equal, especially with certain powers in control of their respective governments.

Misha Glenny did well with his Balkan book. Although, I've read this book over and over, he's had the tenacity and ability for a reader to lose interest within the introduction itself. Unless, one doesn't have a proper understanding of what Ex-Jugoslavija was all about.

Mr.Glenny, don't show your biasim so early in a book. Get your message across in an appropriate form of language with the reader still holding that book.
No love lost for being a Pro-Srb, their masters at 'Propaganda'!

          Ex-Crni Gorac

          1 out of 5 stars Not a good book...at all.......2001-12-10

I was looking for an overview of the balkan conflict. This book does not offer that. It does not give someone without a great deal of prior knowledge a good historical reference for what led to war. I feel like the author of this book assumes the reader is extremely familiar with the conflict and decided to write a book sharing some of his personal experiences that coincided with major events in the conflict. The chapters severely lack coordination. As somebody else mentions it goes into way too much detail about insignificant figures. I also purchased "Yugoslavia, Death of a Nation". Though I've only finished the introduction and first chapter I already feel like I've learned more than after completion of "The Fall of Yugoslavia". Maybe after completing "Death of a Nation" going back through "The Fall of Yugoslavia" might be interesting, doubt it though...

4 out of 5 stars Eastern Europe Lover.......2001-07-08

Absolutely stunning. This book is a must for anyone who is interested in the Balkans. Mishy Glenny's account of this last decade was captivating from beginning to end, (despite the small print). I would describe it as a real eyeopener for someone who's only familiarity with this area was the second world war and what the media told us during the 90's.

            Book Description

The widely debated challenge to modern literary and intellectual life by one of its most celebrated figures: How should the artist respond in times of great social and economic change, and why is alienation a surrender rather than a solution?

I had originally read this book some years back (early in high school, I believe). This will actually be my second copy. This is an excellent book written early this century. It deals mainly in the decline in literature leading up to its publication. I truly recommend this to any literature fan.

                2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-09-07

This book has taught me that one should never order a book only on the basis of its table of contents. I made this mistake with this book because I had other AIAA Education Series books and I consider many of them as the most useful books in my collection. However, this is not the case of gSpace Transportation: A System Approach to Analysis and Designh. I think that the mandate of the AIAA Education Series should be to introduce students and/or young aerospace engineers to methods for solving problems. But how can a book help in this if it does not contain a single equation in more than 700 pages? Another problem is that, although the book covers extremely diverse subjects (form gCommercializationh , p.151, to gAntimatter-Based Propulsion Conceptsh, p.628), only one author, Dr. Hammond, is credited. It is reasonable to think that he cannot be an expert of all the subjects treated in the book. Sometimes the book appears to be compiled more on the basis of a (superficial) collection of references, than of the authorfs personal knowledge and experience. One example is Section 9.4 (Optimization Strategies and Applications), where the author puts in the same list both optimization algorithms (e.g. gradient methods, genetic algorithms) and formulations (e.g. collaborative optimization). This is someway equivalent to put in the same list gapple pieh (recipe) and gsugarh (basic ingredient). I could do other examples like this. I can concede only that this book may be useful as a quick reference, considered the wide scope of subjects it treats. In conclusion, have a look at the book before buying it and consider gSpace Mission Analysis and Designh by Jim Wertz as an alternative.

3 out of 5 stars Useful -- but scarcely modern.......2000-04-13

Engineering Analysis of Flight Vehicles was originally aimed ata very narrow target -- the trained but unspecialised engineer, whosefirst exposure to aeronautical engineering would come in graduate school through this book. It hits that target quite well, with one warning I will mention below. What if you are not that graduate student? It depends. This book will be of very little use to you if are, for instance, a pilot wishing to know more about aeronautical engineering, or a shade-tree designer prototyping a homebuilt aeroplane, beginning from a layman's level. If you are that person, you might still learn from this book, but you must dust off your calculus and prepare to take it slowly and work the equations intensively... which may not be what you had in mind. The unprepared reader will sink without a bubble after Chapter 1, 'The Morphology of Flight Vehicles,' a basic introduction, when at the start of Chapter two Ashley says, 'Out of respect for brevity and the reader's prior education...' he will not repeat the rudiments of engineering science.

The Engineering Analysis mentioned in the title is the dynamic analysis... don't look for structural analysis here, which is just as well given the age of the basic material.

I personally find the book useful in my engineering cross-training, and it's led to having a lot of fun with numbers. I got a kick out of the coverage of space-launch dynamics which makes up much of the last third of the book, although I'll never have a practical use for it. (I don't know: does this book sell well to North Korea?)

The warning I mentioned? Engineering is not a static science, and this book is OLD. Ancient, even. Aero engineering has seen changes even since Dover republished it in 1992, and they published it unchanged from its 1974 debut -- in 1974, the computer I used resided forty miles away, DC-3s were still in scheduled service here, and the materials many modern aircraft are made from weren't out of the lab.

There are a few annoying typos, even though Dover claims to have corrected the original text in this regard. Either they used an illiterate copy editor or the original was REALLY pretty grim. However, I have not found any typos yet in the equations.

In conclusion the book is a good but dated text for someone crossing over into aeronautical engineering from another engineering or scientific discipline. One thing that does recommend it is its bargain price, a tiny fraction of the cost of a more up-to-date textbook.

                Book Description

The second edition of Space Mission Analysis and Design continues the tradition of emphasizing the process of mission design establshed by the first edition. Process tables are now included for all elements of the design activity. The quick-reference tables of important mission design parameters have been expanded to six pages on the inside rear cover. Numerous data tables have been expanded and updated, including space computers and a new presentation of satellite lifetimes. New sections have been added on defining the overall mission concept, subject trades, guidance and navigation, and applying the mission analysis and design process to reduce cost and risk in later program stages. The material on mission analysis, space payloads, spacecraft subsystems, and launch systems has been substantially revised. This book remains an invaluable tool for the concept exploration process and is requied reading for anyone involved in this process for unmanned space missions. This book is intended for professionals and students in astronautics and space science, aerospace engineers and managers, and scientists involved with space experiments. It is also very suitable as a textbook in space mission analysis and design, or as supplementary reading for courses in virually any area of space technology.

5 out of 5 stars THE book for practicing space systems engineers.......2002-12-22

What can I say about SMAD? It is THE book for the practicing space systems engineer. After several years in this industry my copy of SMAD is well-thumbed and constantly borrowed by colleagues. I refer to it regularly, and don't know how I could have survived without it. Every time I go back to this book I find some new nugget of information. Wertz and Larson have managed to condense a whole slew of useful information into one volume. The only problem with SMAD is that it takes a kind of "cookbook" approach, without many derivations. But that approach is necessitated by the breadth of material it covers, and is made up for by a wealth of references for more in-depth material. Highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Good, but way too long.......2002-11-28

I use this book as a college text.

SMAD offers a wealth of good information, but it's far too wordy and prone to personal ruminations on the parts of the contributors. It could profitably be shortened by at least 200 pages.

In addition, Chapter 9 (on payloads) needs significant re-work, especially on the discussion of optical payloads. The chapter somehow manages to be both too detailed, and too top-level, for the reader to actually use it. Those who can fill in the technical gaps will not need SMAD, and those who cannot, cannot use SMAD. The proper approach would be to offer a qualitative assessment of how payloads affect satellite design. Leave the deep-down technical details for other texts.

Finally, there are sections which can only be described as advertisements for Wertz's company. The discussions of autonomous orbit determination and autonomous orbit control are vastly biased, and do not cover the full range of considerations that have to go into selecting an approach for either activity.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for mission design work.......1999-07-23

Wertz has continued his good works, this time branching out with Larson from vehicle design (his book Attitude Determination & Control is considered a bible for NASA as well as contractor ACS engineers) to mission-oriented design. The scope is larger with emphasis on many example missions, so necessarily the technical detail is not as rich; but for ACS systems, definitely get his first one.

5 out of 5 stars THE definitive satellite design book.......1999-02-04

This book covers the large amount of information required to design and plan a space mission, and does it in a clear and succinct way.

5 out of 5 stars Very cool space engineering book - a must have!.......1998-07-14

This book is intened for those with the equivalent of a BS. I found it very well formatted and a wealth of information. It is a very fun book to have for us space junkies with a technical background to make use of it.
