"Do more with less space" is the key concept of this down-to-earth design guide for both new home builders and remodelers. Not So Big Solutions for Your Home provides simplified design principles in jargon-free language for the nonprofessional contemplating a residential building project. Architect and author Sarah Susanka, well-known for 1998's The Not So Big House: A Blueprint for the Way We Really Live, offers advice on how to redefine space to create happier living areas that function more efficiently. For example, analyzing the family's television habits and planning set placement in advance may avert future squabbles and smooth out daily living. Thinking of each exterior door as the location of a sequence of common events (such as hauling in the groceries or taking off muddy boots) will help the planner create a neater entryway adapted to the family's specific needs. Throughout, plentiful drawings and photos illustrate simple solutions to such common problems as unused living rooms, dark bedrooms, and crowded kitchens. Readers seeking to remodel on a budget will be heartened by Susanka's contention that it is often best to stay within existing walls and avoid building out. All in all, the book provides a lot of theoretical food for thought for lay people preparing to begin the daunting task of either building a new home or remodeling an old one. --Judy Fireman

5 out of 5 stars Love this concept!.......2007-07-25

I now am a HUGE fan of Sara Susanka. I went to the library and read ALL her books. The pictures are very helpful if planning a remodel or building new. Finding an architect that is in-tune is a challenge, most are men and do not think this way.

3 out of 5 stars Not So Complete Ideas.......2007-03-11

Nice book of concepts. Albeit incomplete and some what frustrating.

The Author presents concepts in text, images, sketches and floor plans.
Problem is the floor plans and text lack any measurements to put the
plans in perspective. There are no size minimums or guide lines.

5 out of 5 stars A textbook for design details.......2007-01-25

This book is best read *before* one even selects the lot for their home, but it does contain a few good ideas for those who want to remodel.

In the beginning, she talks about site selection and designing the house to take advantage of and to fit in with the site. She also talks about window placement and roof lines to make sure the outside of the house looks "right."

The bulk of the book talks about things such as designing a mudroom, a mail-sorting place, where to place a tv - in other words, how to design real-life living spaces for real-life tasks and habits.

The book also includes thoughts about details, both aesthetic and practical - varying ceiling heights, skylight considerations, where to place outlets and light switches, and window placement.

The last part of the book talks about simple floor plan changes to existing homes, how to make an addition blend seamlessly into the exisiting struction, a smart solution on how to add a window seat, etc.

Where the Not So Big House dealt with the concept of smart design, this book give more specific applications of smart design. If you're in the planning stages of home-building, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Solutions for the real world.......2007-01-13

This is the ideal continuation to Sarah Susankas earlier books. Well written and full of ideas for many different lifestyles. Although repeating some of the earlier real life projects, she has developed the themes and showed us how to live better not bigger. If I have any criticism at all, it is that she has based most of her ideas around her cold climate environment and there is very little written about the warmer climates. The theories however are sound and using our own imagination, can be extrapolated to any environment.

4 out of 5 stars Fine Homebuilding Reprints.......2006-08-05

This is typical Susanka style, but looking at individual details, and helping to solve specific problems.
Definitely a good book, but if you subscribe to Fine Homebuilding, you'll find that you've already read this.

    Book Description

This is the story of Chicago and how it grew. In a little over a century it rose from a mere frontier outpost to become one of the great cities of the world. No single book can possibly encompass the immense scope of this development or convey the endless diversity of the life of Chicago's people. But with the help of the camera it is possible to capture many dimensions of this extraordinary story.

This volume, however, which comprises over 1,000 pictures and 50 maps, tries to do more than show physical development—it attempts to suggest how the city expanded and why it looks the way it does. Because it asks different questions, this book differs markedly from other "pictorial histories" of American cities. Instead of emphasizing society and customs, this volume deals with the physical conditions of life. In place of the conventional interest in "founding fathers" and leading families, it is more concerned with street scenes and ordinary people. Without neglecting downtown, it also reaches into the residential areas and neighborhood shopping centers. Moreover, this volume is concerned with suburbs and "satellite" towns as well as the historic city.

"Chicago: Growth of a Metropolis is an incredible book. Like its subject it is excessive, and nothing succeeds like excess. It is handsomely designed, with a thousand photographs that document the physical growth and the spatial patterns of the city. . . . A dimensionalism comes through that no other city has. Carl Sandburg sang it in his poetry, and the book does more to grasp it . . . than any other book I have seen."—Hugh Newell Jacobson, New Republic

5 out of 5 stars Great View of Chicago's History & Growth .......2007-01-04

This superb book describes the evolution of Chicago with over 1,000 photographs and dozens of maps. Readers see how a combination of geography, industrialization, railroads and immigration rapidly changed Chicago from an 1837 outpost on Lake Michigan to one of the world's greatest cities. Quickly becoming the earth's leading railroad center, Chicago grew to 110,000 persons in 1860, 550,000 in 1880, 1.6 million in 1900, 3.5 million in 1930 - and at this writing some nine million persons call Chicago (or more often its suburbs) home. Readers see how "the Windy City" has always been a magnet for immigrants seeking jobs, opportunity, and/or urban flavor. The authors focus heavily on the many neighborhoods, and show how our city's growth was influenced by architectural, historic and economic trends. There's also solid coverage of downtown and its famous skyline, our differing ethnic groups, plus many parks, suburbs, slums, highways, railroads, the subway/EL system, etc.

You can read this book straight through, use it as reference, or just learn about our city from the many photos. Either way, you'll sense the pride that leads many residents to identify themselves first as being from Chicago, and only later as being from Illinois, the Midwest or the USA.

5 out of 5 stars One of the only College texts I actually enjoyed!.......2003-03-07

I first read this book over 10 years ago. it quickly became one of the only textbooks I have read cover to cover more than once. Anyone wanting to learn more about Chicago history will love this book. I continue to use it as reference and as a continous form of entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Beautiful.......2000-07-12

This book is a very thorough overview of Chicago's rich history. It also has a very large amount of pictures which make it good as a display book for your coffee table. Anyone who has lived in Chicago can read this and understand the significance of Chicago's past and its influence on the city's evolution.

A wonderful little book, it warps you into another sort of political/sci fi universe, where it makes completely logical sense to space daisies exactly, and to do something about those bipeds that wander around. Sort of like OCD on a cosmic scale (not that I believe in all that...) I had a copy of it years ago, and was happy to find it available.

                    Book Description

Mary Clearman Blew's aunt Imogene Welch embodied the hard-working values of depression-era western America. In Writing Her Own Life, Blew builds a narrative around excerpts from the diaries Imogene kept during World War II while she taught in rural Montana schools and later in Washington State. Through her diary entries we learn of the war's effects on Imogene as she moved from rural, family-centered life in Montana to independent if somewhat lonelier life in Washington State.

After growing up on an impoverished homestead in Montana, Imogene enjoyed the modest comforts of living in a small town in Washington, including electricity and running water. And she experienced the dramatic changes in a school system under stress from the war: separated families, crowded classrooms, and an increasingly mobile population. Imogene's diaries find her exploring a new landscape, worrying about distant friends and family, coping with her newfangled automobile, enduring roommates, and eventually learning to cherish her independence.

Blew explores the transitional experiences of the young schoolteacher and examines traditional and non-traditional ways in which fiction and creative nonfiction recreate the life recorded in the diaries. Moving beyond Imogene's experiences, Blew asks what an inheritance of family stories and text means to a generation of readers who are experiencing transitions different from Imogene's but no less intense.

                        Book Description

World War I is often deemed to have been ‘a war of artillery’, and British heavy artillery played a vital part in destroying the German trenches and providing invaluable cover for advancing troops on the Western Front. This book details the huge guns of the Royal Garrison Artillery, including the 6-in. siege gun and howitzer, the 8-in. howitzer, the 12-in. railway and siege howitzer and the infamous 9.2-in breech-loading siege howitzer. Camouflage and enemy battery locations and transport are covered, as well as tactics used and how the guns were developed and manned.

                        5 out of 5 stars Nicely Detailed.......2007-01-30

Heavy Artillery covers the pre-war modernization and organization of the British siege guns, balanced against the reality of war time deployment in a landscape decidedly ill-suited to moving and emplacing such massive equipment. Attention is given to the practical problems of logistics with limited mechanization and long range fire control from hidden batteries in the days before practical radios.

Short individual sections detail the base gun models, including railway mountings, and the modifications to improve range, mobility, and terminal effect.

The excellent color plates give a close-up look at several guns and mountings with a two page spread on the 9.2 inch howitzer, and one can barely imagine the smoke and noise of firing these massive artillery pieces under the constant threat of German counter battery shells.

5 out of 5 stars An essential reference on European Royal lines of descent........2000-12-08

This book is very unique. It combines history, geneology and heraldry. Historically each royal family is described country by country. It is probably the only book published that combines individual coats of arms-beginning in the 11th century-with the geneology of the royal houses of Europe. The 150 tables combine these two elements showing the hearldic shields in full color of many of the family members. The book covers the past 1000 years of the royal families of Europe descent and makes some references to earlier time and leaders, such as the Franks and Charlemagne. The book has been a great help to my research on the European Royal Houses, and helps indicate the inter-relatedness of the princely families of Europe. It has some tables showing such relationships and connections between the noble families. It has impressive detail considering the extensive scope of the book and serves as an excellent base for more detailed and extensive research on particular individuals and families. It is a well developed book and useful to quickly trace the descent and hearldry of the European Royals.

                                    Book Description

Understanding the biotransformations of aromatic compounds and how they metabolize in animals, plants, and microbes, is central to the applications in a wide range of industries, such as the design and testing of natural and synthetic pharmaceuticals, oil refining, the development of agrochemicals, bioremediation, and for use in functional genomics and xenobiotics. Presenting the most complete resource of its kind, the Handbook of Biotransformations of Aromatic Compounds examines 20,000 aromatic compounds researched since 1972, and assembled from all the major, relevant journals. The author focuses his coverage on the biotransformation in animals, plants, and microbes while remaining within the scope of aromatic compounds that contain, or are fused with, at least one aromatic C6 ring. Part One lists each compound alphabetically along with the forward and reverse mechanisms of its metabolism in specific organisms. Part Two characterizes the different types of organic reactions that have been identified - including formation and degradation, oxidations and reductions, substitution, and transfer reactions - and the enzymes associated with those reactions. The author cites selected references for enzymes that are well documented while filling in the details for those with little research literature. This book also contains a searchable CD-ROM of the author's previous work covering aromatic compounds researched from 1900 through 1972. Presenting the most complete resource of its kind, this well-established author draws on his firsthand knowledge to organize a large body of information into a user-friendly and indispensable handbook for professionals, policymakers, and researchers alike.
