Open the door and step outside to see how the Arts & Crafts aesthetic has shaped gardens over the years as surely as it has influenced architecture and furniture. This follow-up volume to Inside the Bungalow: America's Arts and Crafts Interior shows the characteristic brick, tile and wood, wide-porched exteriors of the bungalow style half-buried beneath wisteria vines, arbors, flowers, and foliage.
The bungalows that the gardens surround range from the archetypal dark, timbered wood and stone to the rustic, grand, and even Southwestern, offering a visual feast of gardens to match. The authors emphasize not specific plants, but the architectural elements and style of such gardens: tiled fountains, pergolas, pathways, and the use of stone, timbers, and courtyards to tie house and garden together.
Both text and photos focus in on details like outdoor light fixtures, hose bibs, mailboxes, birdhouses, fences and lattice as part of the characteristic Arts & Crafts aesthetic. The "Garden Portraits" chapter includes garden plans as well as photos of bungalow exteriors from Seattle to southern California, emphasizing that it is not the plants themselves but how they are grouped to emphasize the architecture and the hardscaping that creates an Arts & Crafts garden. Still, there are certain plants that appear over and over again in the photos, and have the right look for such gardens--ornamental grasses, vines, climbing roses, and plants with bold structural foliage like iris, ferns, clivia, and hosta. The charming chapter on potting sheds and tree houses, as well as the exuberant and colorful plantings throughout, go a long way toward explaining why people have been so captivated by "bungalowmania" for more than three decades. --Valerie Easton
Book Description
This third volume in a popular series highlights the special beauty and enduring appeal of Arts and Crafts bungalow gardens.
Matching Paul Duchscherer's authoritative text with striking photographs by Douglas Keister--the team that made The Bungalow and Inside the Bungalow so successful--Outside the Bungalow will captivate the ever-growing number of Arts and Crafts aficionados. In it the garden, with its "nature-friendly" charm and character, takes the spotlight as an integral part of bungalow living.
Focusing on the fixed architectural or "hardscape" elements, striking ensembles include entry gates, arbors, portals, and driveways; wooden fences, screens, railings, and masonry walls; paths, walkways, and steps; ponds, fountains, bird baths, swimming pools, and spas; courtyards, patios, gazebos, pergolas, and porches; outdoor furniture from benches to swings; and details from treehouses and potting sheds to lighting and garden accessories. Special chapters feature gardens of the famous Charles and Henry Greene houses, and a turn-of-the-century plant list. Portraits of gardens in context with their vintage bungalows range from glorious color photographs to hand-colored postcards of the period and will thrill architecture or design professionals and amateurs eager to recapture the romance of "bungalowmania."
Customer Reviews:
America's Arts and Crafts Garden is great for ideas........2006-11-10
This book is full of pictures of lovely arts and crafts style homes and gardens. I got several ideas for my own yard just from leafing through the pages.
Unique style beautifully presented.......2002-11-26
This book covers the architectural aspects of the property surrounding the bungalow - gates, arbors, fences, walls, paths, steps, water features, courtyards, patios, pergolas, porches, outdoor furniture, etc. The photography and color illustrations are superb and it is hard to take your eyes off the photos to actually read the text! And although the photos were taken at the present, the authors have not neglected the history of these dwellings and have included beautiful colored postcards that were so popular during the 1920s and 1930s. An introductory sections discusses the movers and shakers of the Arts and Crafts Movement, like William Morris, William Robinson, Gertrude Jekyll and Gustav Stickley. The final chapter is devoted to the architectural firm of Greene and Greene, whose style was a major influence. Most of the houses and gardens photographed here are on the West Coast (mainly Seattle, WA, Portland, OR and Pasadena, CA) although there are some Rhode Island properties included as well. A final section is devoted to planting the garden and includes lists of plants which are good for any situation imaginable. This is a wonderful book - beautiful, unique and inspiring!
Nothing like it............2002-10-12
Disclaimer: I'm a bit biased, because its my home on the cover, despite this, the book is a crucial tool, there was so obvious a need for a book on this topic, one that relates to what people were wanting to do with their homes, and helping them to avoid. to a point, having to scrounge through years of bound periodicals in the library, and random drives through promising neighborhoods in search of inspiring examples....not that you would get to see the back yards.
Doug and Paul have gone out of their way to search out appropriate examples for all three of their bungalow books together, ranging always from the garden shed to the Gamble house. This is the only in-print book I'd recommend for the topics of Arts & Crafts fencing, walls, paths, site integration etc.
Having seen many of these sites in person, I can say that photographer Doug Keister, has brought a focus that many would miss in person. My wisteria only blooms 4-5 weeks a year, but of course, they got it then.
My only complaint is that the photos are so compelling that many might never get to read all the text, which is what the book is all about.
There is some validity to the point above about a West-Coast bias to the topics, but when you consider that virtually every other A & C garden book has a English tilt, it seems less a problem. There is room for a knowledgeable Mid-Westerner to write a good book as well. "Outside the Bungalow" is not the last book that should be written on the topic, just the best, by far, so far.
Excellent resource for creating a "complete" environment.......2000-09-19
What a great resource for those who feel that their home begins outside in its surroundings. The bungalow has never really gone out of style and continues to hold national appeal. This book is full of ideas that cross the spectrum from simple to ellegant. It draws the reader outside of the bungalow and gives one cause to reflect on making the outside environment beautiful, comfortable, unique and completmentary to the structure itself. Many of the small towns in Southern California have undergone a second life with downtown revitalization projects that have extented into the older neighborhoods. Duchscherer & Keister give the reader an appreciation for the beauty that can be created around these older homes.
The constant theme running through this book is the timeliness of the garden. The garden didn't come into being during the Arts & Crafts period, it simply became a tremendous complement to the home.
Don't be discouraged if you don't live in a Greene & Greene, the effort and love you put into the setting of your home, will give you the same level of pride in ownership. You may not be able to have the largest or most expensive home on the block, but you can have the most beautiful garden.
Many of the gardens in the book have multiple photographs which are cross-referenced to give the reader an almost 360 degree visualization. The only suggestion I would make is that the author include an overview of those superlative gardens and identify the various views to provide the reader with an even better understanding and appreciation of the home's surroundings.
The Bible in Bungalow Restoration and Gardens!.......2000-07-21
This entire series--The Bungalow, Outside the Bungalow and Inside the Bungalow--are bibles for bungalow restoration. They are filled with many great ideas and lots of wonderful pictures. Great initial books to buy and refer to time and again throughout your restoration process. If anything could be found wrong with the books, it is the heavy concentration of pictures of West Coast bungalows. We have many bungalows in Minnesota too!

Book Description
In this book, Dr. Robert J. Stoller, one of the world`s leading experts on human sexual behavior, joins with I. S. Levine, a professional writer and director with experience in the making of X-rated videos, to examine the backgrounds and motivations of the participants in an adult heterosexual X-rated video, Stairway to Paradise. Their interviews with performers, writers, directors, producers, and technicians provide unique insights into the mechanics and aesthetics of this type of video, the psychological make-up of the people involved, and the legal and moral implications of such films.
Customer Reviews:
Not Bad.......2007-01-11
I read this a while back, but quit about two thirds through. I was looking for something that got more into the mind set of people who do porn. This does, but to a fairly limited amount of people because it's primarily centered around a single movie so there's not a lot of interviews with many people all around the business. I mean it's interesing to hear what the camera man has to say or the director or th producer and of course the players, but with such a limited sample there's not enough depth. None the less it's not a bad read in general, but I lost interest because it wasn't what I was expecting...
Fascinating Book.......2001-04-18
While recently researching for a documentary film on the porn industry, I stumbled upon this book at the library. It was the only one they had that appeared equally weighted in terms of objectivity and lack of moralizing. I particulary liked the shared voices of the academic and porn producer.
In addition, this book assumed that you have some knowledge of how the film industry works, and of the porn industry in particular. If you're looking for porn information and you're starting at "ground zero" you should just surf the internet and educate yourself instead of buying one of the other riduculous books recommended on this site. Also, check out lukeford.com for even more up-to-date insights.
Fascinating, albeit repetetive, look inside the XXX industry.......2000-05-01
This book is an incredible, shocking, and educational look into the misunderstood and much maligned "adult video" industry. Although the interviews seem, at first, way too repetetive, it actually allows the readers a clearer view of what was really happening on the set, getting past all the ego blinders the interviewees threw at the interviewers. Those wishing for cheap thrills and juicy photos need look elsewhere. Those interested in actually learning something about this industry and the people who work in it will definitely finish this book happy.
Surprisingly good.......1998-12-10
Through a series of interviews with writers, directors, cast and crew, the author dissects the process of making a pornographic movie from conception to release. Far from the giggly bimbo-fest one might expect, all the persons interviewed come across as intelligent adults who have made the conscious decision to be involved with the x-rated film industry. I was especially impressed with veteran actress Nina Hartley's thoughts on her illustrious career and her complete confidence that what she is doing is not wrong. Another affecting piece was from an actor who is trying to leave the industry, but with a wife and new baby at home, he finds it difficult to stay away from the money. Made me think of Boogie Nights, and the ex-porn star couple trying to get a loan to start their own business. All in all a very impressive academic study.
Movie magic... XXX style.......1998-07-01
After reading this book you will never view another adult video the same way.
Prior to reading this book, I had no idea how hard actors and actresses work on the set of an adult movie.
This book goes in-depth via candid interviews with all the participants involved in the production of "Stairway to Paradise". Their individual perspectives on the making of this XXX masterpiece will make you realize how difficult it is to produce a quality "hard core" movie.

cute book!.......2007-01-09
I loved this book! As a child I beleved in Santa but the lines seemed so crossed for me as a Christian. I knew a little of how it began but this book was written with a lot of information, but one kids will love! I loved that this explained who St. Nick was and how the stories of Santa began, without making them negative! It also points to the real star of Christmas, Jesus, and not Santa. My children 12,7,&5 all enjoyed this book!
Wonderful way for Christian parents to explain Santa Claus.......2001-01-04
After searching for a way to explain to our children why, as a part of celebrating Jesus' birthday, there's a large fat man flying around giving "good" children presents, I finally I found this treasure of a book. The book is very simple with nice black and white drawings, detailed enough to hold the attention of younger children, but not so catchy as to detract from the important message.
The premise of the book is a little girl is making sugar cookies with her mother, when she notices the Santa cookie cutter. Thus begins a discussion between mother and daughter about why Santa is a part of Christmas.
The book does an excellent job of simply and intelligently explaining to children about Saint Nicholas. The mother explains, in a way likely acceptable to both Protestants and Roman Catholics, the snippets we "know" about Saint Nicholas, a man who served God. She tells the stories about Nicholas being caught in a boat in a terrible storm, how he became the Bishop and how he provided the dowry for the three sisters.
The book ends with an explanation of how Saint Nicholas changed into Santa Claus and, more importantly, how a "generous stranger...who brings gifts" reminds us of God's even better gift of Jesus.
This book is easily used by families who choose to include Santa in their celebrations, as well as those who chose to exclude him. Although I wasn't able to use it this year, I believe my 2 1/2 year old son would have been able to grasp the concepts. It will definitely be part of our celebration next year.

Struck Eagle Struck Out.......2007-06-02
My interest in Micah Jenkins was tweaked while reading "From Manassas to Appomattox" by General James Longstreet who wrote of him repeatedly and testified to his faith. After a struggle to obtain the book and having read other reader reviews here, I had an expectation of a wonderful read about a faithful, honorable and courageous warrior.
What I read was an informational text gathered from various sources, which the author does freely disclose but that left me void of learning but little about the man who many others have praised for his fortitude and grace.
Unfortunately there were not enough sources that had actual Micah Jenkins content in them. Lots of references to him, but not enough of him. The author states that there was some license taken when there were not the details needed to finish a particular substory. If that were the case, then the readers would be able to be touch more by the man in a historical novel than a biography that contains very little from the subject himself.
Though I read through the book, and realize that the author, a descendant of Jenkins family, did a great deal of research there were no real ruminative or energizing or reverence (Eugene Peterson)created in the words and the life of this warrior of South Carolina. That is a tragedy as his faith was testified to be close to that of Stonewall Jackson or Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain who both lived in "The Hands of Providence" by choice and word.
The book is informative about what Jenkins was involved in, but as a biography missed the mark to give life to the man.
I had some concern as the "Struck Eagle" was pulled from the words of Lord Byron who clearly developed those words from Aeschylus in the old Libyan fable .... Once an Eagle.

A Hidden Gem!.......2001-04-04
You have chanced upon the reviews of one of the best of all the Civil War Biographies! In fact, if it wern't for Robertson's bio on Stonewall this would top them all. Although Jenkins' is little known outside of South Carolina his exploits were no less awesome then some of the better known generals from the South. Micah fought in some of the most ferocious battles of the Civil War, and always led from the front. Near my house in Columbia is a museum where you can see his broken sword and jacket pierced by numerous bullets that he wore during the Seven Days' Battle around Richmond. This battle is particularly interesting and extremely well described. This book will not bore and is not overwhelmingly biased as some Civil War books tend to be, but it is a joy to read and will definitely be a great addition to anyone's library!
A Great Battle History of a Civil War Unit.......1998-07-03
This book was a delight to read and the author, James Baldwin, went to great depths to research his subject matter. The biography of Brigadier General Micah Jenkins went hand in hand with the story of the 5th South Carolina Volunteers and the Palmetto Sharpshooters. I found that the maps provided were detailed and easy to follow and helped the reader to follow the narrative of that particular event or action the author was describing. I did notice that there was a different point of view as to who was at fault for the Confederate failure during the battle of Lookout Mountain fought during October 28-29 1863. In this book the author places the blame upon Brigadier General Evander M. Law, (pages 233-241). In Wiley Sword's account of this incident in his book 'Mountains Touched with Fire' (pages 134-144), he places the blame more towards Micah Jenkins. But either way, he was a gifted leader and a brave man and one who shared a similiar fate to many leaders who lead from the front during the Civil War. Overall a well researched and presented book covering the many battles of this man and these units.
