dowels, metal, and grommets, oh my! *yawn*.......2007-06-04

This book is so often mentioned and recommended that I bought it. I have produced some hand-built portfolios of my own, and was looking for more inspiration and practical advice. Instead, I found poor images, much of it in black and white, and the work in the portfolios is more interesting than the portfolios themselves.

This is heavily geared to architects and also to those with the means to have professional printing and a huge cash outlay for materials, cases, etc. I think some of the advice is good, but really for the un-initiated student, not professionals. A professional already knows that if the portfolio is sloppy, that it will not speak well of the designer and that a well-designed portfolio is an extra endorsement for the designer above and beyod the contents. There is little better advice/information in this book than that.

The portfolios showcased are very similar to each other, and there is little that can be produced by someone at home with a computer and a printer. I can tell you from my own experience that there is a lot you can do with a little elbow grease and less reliance on professionally assembled pieces.

A little advice of my own: A portfolio must showcase the work, must not detract from the quality of the work, and must be either changeable or expendable. Your portfolio should not be stagnant, but evolving with the new wonderful things you're doing and adding! Too few of the examples in this book provide for leave-behnids, inclusion of resumes, and the evolution of the contents.

disappointed.......2006-11-04

Given this book was about presentation and promotion I was suprised to find the reproduction very poor, as if it was a photocopy in some parts. The paper selection was poor and some of the photographs of works approaching unreadable. The advice and text was good. Very, very diasappointed and in fact gave the book away.

Once again, I am writing a review for this book and specifically the third edition. I have noticed that a few people seem to be confused about what this book provides, so I'll give you my take on the publication.

This book is about designing a professional portfolio to showcase your work. This is not a "How To" for Photoshop, InDesign or for ways to resize renderings, although I would like to think that you would be able to easily utilize the technology at an educational facility, if you indeed have access.(If you can use AutoCad you can figure out PS and if you can use PS surely you can accurately resize an image...right?) This book focuses on layout, spacing, planning sequences, visual weight and just about any other visual design element that one might embrace when producing a portfolio. The outcome of using this book as a resource ends in your portfolio being stylized in a personal yet extremely effective design. The most beneficial aspect of this book is learning how to compose the whole thing as a piece of literature. Your portfolio should tell a story. A story with an introduction, an exposition, plot, peaks, plateaus and an appropriate finish. THIS IS ABOUT PLANNING, CHOOSING CONTENT AND DESIGNING A FINISHED PRODUCT THAT YOU CAN HAND TO PROSPECT AND KNOW THAT YOU HAVE CAPTURED THEIR ATTENTION. Of course, this book will not make poor work/pieces look fabulous. Sorry, no magic tricks are included.

This book will get you accepted in the best schools!!
I have read more than one book on portfolio design for architects, listened to many words of advice on the subject but Howard Linton's book was really the best resource I've ever had.
Other books are just vague and annoyingly general, they don't tell you how to organize yourself and your work and they don't discuss the many details you have to bear in mind and go through, or worse still have no lists of the dos and don'ts! On the other hand, Portfolio design by Mr. Linton does all that and much more.
I recommend it to all architecture students and professionals.

The old classic Mudworks is now available in a bilingual edition... Spanish project on the left page, same English project on the right page. Like a butterfly, mirror image. I imagine this art book of clays and doughs breaking through the barriers of language. Afterall, art is a language we ALL speak. I imagine a Spanish speaking gramma and her little English speaking grandchild making playdough together in the kitchen, each reading their own language recipes. I see kids in bilingual classrooms using the translations to check themselves on their command of whatever language is their second language, I dream of Spanish immersion classes using this book to enhance their learning, I hope for mommies and daddies who are speaking English as a second language using this book to help them get through making clays, doughs, and modeling recipes with their kids. And for ME, I just like seeing if I can use the Spanish recipe and make stuff! (with the English back up)

Other than being truly dope, there's not much to say about Ernie Pannicioli's phenomenal book, Who Shot Ya? These pages truly capture the heart and soul of Hip Hop culture and those responsible for it. No pansy Photoshop touch-ups or cookie cutter material here, baby! Who Shot Ya delivers, bringing us chock-full-of-flavor in every page. Pannicioli immortalizes a lot of his subjects in their natural state; albeit, at times too raw for it's viewer. Let me just say that the book is great! It's a conversation piece, photo journal, nostalgia, and more importantly, our musical & cultural history, all roled up into one. "Who Shot Ya?" is very engaging as well as entertaining. Not just for young Hip Hop fans but for those interested in seeing an important time of our history come to life.

There are so many never seen before pictures of artist such as Queen Latifa, MC Lyte, Busta, Lauren Hill....the list goes on and on. Even some of the artist were surprised when they saw some old school photos of themselves.

The love and respect that both Ernie and Kevin have for HipHop culture is felt on every page.

This would make a nice gift. Check it out.

A Photographic Masterpiece.......2002-11-24

Ernie Paniccioli has given Hip-Hop fans a treasure of photographs of nearly everyone who has been involved with Hip-Hop. His collections feature Old School Stars such as Grandmaster Flash and goes up to current stars such as Mystikal, Nelly, Nas , JayZ ,Common, and Talib Kweli. It will bring back memories of how some stars looked back in the dayz (Mary J. Blige in her classic ghetto fabulous style of jeans, boots and baseball cap). In addition, it will give a glimpse back in time at forgotten groups and rappers(Ultramagnetic MCs, KidnPlay, Jungle Brothers, Roxanne Shante etc.) The only slight I have with this book is that it did not have a picture of my old schoolmate DJ Scott La Rock (You will see KRS-One in a picture over a mural featuring Scott's name). A must buy for all Hip-Hop fans.

I agree with the previous reviewer. The husband really has no respect for culture. The wife is wayyy too good for this guy! Unfortunately, he's the father of a beautiful baby girl. Let's hope she can help him grow up!!! The book really didn't provide any new information or insights to China adoption. I read the below reviews and bought it anyway. Anyone want to buy my copy now? I love to keep my books but it's just not one I would read again since it's mostly written with disregard for his daughters wonderful culture. Sad.

Yes I agree with the comments above. This book was sooo disappointing, the couple just complained and seemed to spend all their time at the gym...what about getting out there and seeing china...It was a waste of money and very badly written with spelling errors...I think the authors should check the spelling of rice paddy, as they will find it is paDDy not paTTy.

Avoid this book.......2005-01-11

I wish I had read the online reviews before I tackled this book. I found the authors' description of their story to be especially dismaying. They didn't seem to respect their daughter- even made up a very disparaging song about her (and bodily functions) while they were in China. Very disappointing to see two college educated individuals be so close-minded and complaining about China. The husband's chapters become especially cumbersome- whenever I got to his sections all I could think of was, "What will he be complaining about now?" This book can be such a downer that it might sap the excitement out of you. I wonder how they are doing now. They did not seem cut out for parenthood at all.

If you are considering adoption, there are many other really good books. Search under, "Adoption, China" on Amazon and check out some of the others.

Not worth the time, effort, or expense.......2004-10-12

I purchased this book from another site, thus not reading any reviews from it. I wish I'd have come here first! This book was a total waste of money in my opinion. I thought it was going to be more informative in regards to the goings on in China as far as the actual adoption process. Instead, the writers spend most of the time complaining about the food, weather, transportation and even their newly adopted daughter. While I understand the need for truth in the adoption world, I found that this book concentrated more on the troubles of the process than the joy. There were a couple of mentions of good times, but not enough to make this an uplifting read. It was not informative at all in my opinion. Stay away from this book and research on the internet instead.

Not worth the money or the time to read........2004-04-26

My husband and I are in the paperchase process of adopting from China. Like some other reviewers, I thought this book would give me an indication of how the process would play out once we're over there. What I found in this book were the snobby, close-minded and down-right insulting remarks from a couple who didn't really seem like they even liked their new daughter. For example, at one point, the husband wrote that they spent one evening "making fun" of the little girl. I was shocked, but keep reading, much to my regret.

There were instances of a true disregard for the culture he was visiting. While in a restaurant one night, he was disgusted that there were some Chinese businessmen at a nearby table who were smoking. As he and his party were leaving, he made some "crude comments" to the men and "had a good laugh" about it afterwards. No wonder most of the world thinks Americans are rude!

For the most part, he did nothing but complain about the entire experience. The food, the weather, the travel, the baby, EVERYTHING. I would say 97% of the book is comprised of complaints regarding China, and the other 3% is lame comments about 'how beautiful some of the country is'. Hypocrite.

And as a few other reviewers have stated, they came home and immediately placed the baby in all-day daycare. They drop her off at 7 in the morning and don't pick her up until 5. What's the point of having a child at all? I can understand if your financial situation requires two incomes, but this couple didn't strike me as people who really wanted a child in the first place. Her 'biological clock' went off, and because of their ages, they decided to adopt. That's the feeling I get.

I can understand the out of date information because adoption guidelines and such can change very quickly. But the attitude displayed in the 'journal entries' disgusted and angered me. China is trying very hard to be cooperative regarding adopting families, and is one of the 'easiest' countries to adopt from. (Only one short trip required, relatively low fees, abundant children available, babies are usually healthier than other countries, etc.) His total lack of courtesy and respect while visiting is insulting not only to China, but to the rest of us who are waiting to pick up our child. If he wanted 5 star restaurants and hotels, perhaps he should have tried adopting from a more well-to-do country.

A couple of facts he should have kept in mind as he travelled.

1. International adoption is NOT easy. You are dealing with two different countries, which means two different sets of laws.

2. China IS an underdeveloped country. You're not going to have gourmet dinners every night. Roads are going to be bumpy and dirt covered. Not every building has air conditioning.

3. This is NOT a 'pleasure cruise'. Don't expect to be catered to and have people at your beck and call at any given moment.

4. Be respectful of the different culture. They have different customs, different routines, different lives. Just because YOU don't like it or agree with it, doesn't mean you should be insulting and rude. It's THEIR country. You're just visiting.

Bottom line? Stay away from this book. It's not worth the paper it's printed on. I have NEVER thrown a book away before, but I tossed this one in the garbage, just so noone else had to read it.

MARY WARDS BOOK IS A MUST READ FOR MILITARY FAMILIES. I'VE BEEN FORTUNATE IN KNOWING MARY WARD AND HER SON AND HUSBAND. THIS BOOK IS SOMETHING ALL MILITARY FAMILIES NEED TO READ IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND WHAT OUR SOLDIERS GO THROUGH AND WHAT THEY NEED FOR SUPPORT. I recommend this book to moms, dads, families, and friends of military personnel being or currently deployed to Iraq. Reading 'Letters Home' will help you gain insight and understanding into the daily lives of those deployed. It will also validate the emotions experienced by those of us who wait, wonder, and worry through the deployment time. Read how this family supports their soldier and how their friends and family support one another.

Must Read.......2005-02-03

I was fortunate enough to hear about the book Letters Home by Mary Ward from a friend who had just finished reading it twice. I knew that it was a book that I needed to read. Everything that I was told about the book was true.
This book took me back to my own memories of the first time my son was deployed to Iraq. Facing my son's second deployment, I once again picked up Letters Home and read it again and again.
I hope that everyone in America has the opportunity to read this book to understand what it is like to have a loved one in the military.
Once you buy this book you will not be able to put it down!
I anxiously wait for more books by this very talented author.

A Must Read.......2005-01-29

In the Fall of 2004, when I realized my son would be deploying to Iraq for the 2nd time, I began searching the internet once again for ANYTHING relating to the 3rd ID. My search led me to Mary Ward of Marehaven Productions. A review of her book, "Letters Home" by Ron Martz of the Atlanta Journal Constitution caught my eye because he had been embedded with my son's Company on the Thunder Run to Baghdad. I ordered "Letters Home" that day. From the moment I opened the book, I couldn't put it down. It transported me back in time. Her words were my words. Her son became my son. I cried and I felt the joy of a son returning home from war, and the guilt because I knew others had not. In the week before my son left, I felt compelled to read her book again. In 3 short months, I have read it twice. For any parent who has sent their child off to war and is familiar with the emotional roller coaster ride, this is a must read. And for those who have never sent a child off to war, this book offers insight as to how very difficult it is.

Mary Ward captured my interest with the first sentence and kept it through the entire book. I truly felt her every emotion. It gave me so much appreciation for each and every soldier that is serving our country.
