Book Description
Prefab presents a series of innovative homes and concepts that boldly demonstrate that this is not your grandmother's prefab, offers a glimpse into the history of prefabricated housing over the last century, and reveals a wealth of practical and attractive alternatives to the status quo. Prefab discusses architects, builders, and designers such as Walter Gropius and Philippe Starck, examines the historical precedents from Albert Frey's Corbusier-inspired Aluminaire house to Kisho Kurokawa's capsules, and showcases the work of twenty-four contemporary architects and designers who are exploring the myriad possibilities that prefabrication offers for housing of the future. From the fantastical digitized aluminum prototypes of Gregg Lynn to the stylish functionality of Ikea's prefabricated apartments in Sweden, Prefab presents a series of innovative homes and space-saving concepts that show how far this building technique has come-and how far it can go. Allison Arieff is a writer, senior editor of the architecture magazine dwell, and co-author of Trailer Travel. She is also the editor of several books on art and culture, including Airstream: A History of the Land Yacht and Hatch Show Print: The History of a Great American Poster Shop. She lives in San Francisco. Bryan Burkhart is the designer and co-author of Airstream: The History of the Land Yacht and Trailer Travel: A Visual History of Mobile America. As creative director of his own firm, Modernhouse, he has designed books for Taschen, Chronicle Books, and Gibbs Smith, Publisher. Burkhart also lives in San Francisco.

The book is wel written and very beautifully photographed. The history is interesting, but would have liked to see more current info.
Interesting overview of prefab homes, past, present and future.......2005-11-30
In PREFAB, author Allison Arieff presents an interesting overview of "prefabricated" buildings, past, present, and future. Yet, I would not recommend this book to average modular home consumers, as many of the projects described in PREFAB are highly customized, somewhat eccentric, and generally impractical for those looking to save time and money by utilizing prefab construction as opposed to regular, stick-built construction. Some of the buildings aren't even single-family dwellings, but apartment buildings. Nonetheless, PREFAB is a helpful resource for those who'd like to learn more about the history of prefabricated buildings, as well as the current state of affairs, and in which unusual directions the industry will be headed in the future.
Arieff begins PREFAB with a lengthy (29-page) discussion of the history of prefabricated homes, starting with panelized wood homes in England and the US in 1624, through the American mobile home boom after WWII, and ending with the current state of the industry. The next three sections of the book are devoted to various modern prefab projects. The first, titled "Production," presents "a diverse group of well-designed houses and multi-family dwellings that are either in production, or poised to be." Of the three groups, "Production" is perhaps most relevant to the average consumer; it illustrates the sheer diversity of prefab homes that are available around the world. It also reflects how beautiful prefab homes can be, both inside and out. Next up is "Custom," an eclectic mix of "unique homes by architects less interested in the mass production of houses than in the aesthetic, environmental, and economic benefits of prefabrication." The buildings in this section are stunning - the Penthouse at Albert Court, which sells for $4 to $5 million, is my favorite. Finally, "Concept" features the strangest buildings of the bunch. According the Arieff, the concept buildings represent "a diverse array of virtual and conceptual prefab projects that employ everything from websites to neoprene in order to create the next generation of prefabricated housing." Experimental to the extreme, these plans seem geared towards architects, artists, and other design/construction professionals.
For the beginner, PREFAB is an interesting and engaging introduction to the history of prefabricated housing. As my knowledge of construction and architecture is limited, I can't say whether students or professionals will find PREFAB especially enlightening. I found the author's writing to be crisp and captivating, and I thought there was a good balance of pictures and text. I would definitely recommend PREFAB to newbies who would like to know more about prefab housing; yet, I would direct those looking for a consumer or how-to guide to go elsewhere. Overall, an interesting read, but probably not for everyone (for example, I can see how pros might want additional pictures, larger graphics, and more detailed floor/elevation plans, especially given the book's high price tag).

so-so.......2005-08-08
ok, if you're looking for more of a coffee table book than a serious research source. arieff does provide a brief history of some selected prefabricated ventures, but the other 3/4 of the book is of more modern attempts, all of which are not described or displayed as thoroughly as i had hoped. most of the designs are also of doubtful marketability, and the pompous attitudes of some of the designers is off-putting. some pretty pictures, however.
This book stinks!.......2005-03-12
Let me make a simple observation, people by these type of books for the pictures. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words right? But flipping through this book gave me the impression that the authors wanted to explain in words rather than with pictures. It was "blah, blah, blah, blah, blah" when a few more photos would have been much better. Why describe with words???
I liked "Prefab Modern" by Jill Herbers better because it has more designs. It actually had many of the same designers in Prefab but with more pictures, less words, and a floor plan which really helps you to conceptualize the designs. Not only that but the book by Jill Herbers is cheaper too...
Prefab.......2003-03-14
Prebrication was the holy grail of modernism: the ideal way to rationalize the building process, achieve economies of scale, and bring good design to the masses. Sadly, the only manufactured housing to win wide acceptance was the trailer; architect-designed prototypes seldom left the boards. Arieff, who is senior editor of Dwell magazine, hopes that a new generation of architects may succeed where their forebears failed. She documents over 30 industrialized building projects, mostly from Europe, that combine practicality with design excellence. Sadly, it remains true that people who will happily buy one of a fleet of identical cars, become emotional and irrational when choosing their home. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)
Book Description
For many, the idea of prefab housing may bring to mind trailers and other less desirable images of home life. But this idea couldn't be more wrong! Rather, the newest trends in prefab has emerged as a great way for a design- (and cost-) conscious generation to achieve the dream of home ownership. Today, prefab houses are manufactured to the highest standards of construction and aesthetics. And with the internet, these houses can be ordered from all over the world--affording people everywhere the opportunity to acquire an affordable home of distinction.
Prefab Modern explores the best prefabricated houses on the market today, from all over the world along with a resource directory on how you can purchase them. Included are case studies from all over the US and around the world, from top architects and designers. Projects featured include:
- The Ikea "Blokok House"
- Michael Graves "Target House"
- Steven Holl's "Turbulence House" in New Mexico
- David Hertz's Venice, CA "Concrete House"
- "SUSI" and "Fred Houses" from Kaufmann, KFN Architects (Australia)
- Jennifer Siegal's "Office of Mobile Design" and "Seaview House"
and many more!
Prefab is the inevitable next step to "cool" housing as the market looks for reasonably priced housing for first and second homes. Prefab Modern is the perfect guide to this undeniable and fascinating trend.

fun with fab!.......2007-03-14
as a new-to-prefab lay researcher, i loved this book. a friend passed it on to me after we were all chatting about building our "dream houses."
it gives a basic survey of different types of prefab, from modest to elaborate, and creative diversions in between. i found it an inspirational starting point to daydreaming about fun prefab modern living. the source lists are helpful as well. enjoy!
PreFab Modern.......2006-03-23
Beautiful book with impressive photos and info on contemporary and cutting edge designs in prefab home. Great sampling of the most modern designs and some info about them. Could have been more detail on the homes.
Mostly lightweight fluff.......2006-02-27
For anyone new to this subject matter this book is a basic starting point. However the more you learn about the topic from other sources the more you realize this book is just lightweight fluff. This was simply opportunistic publishing of a coffee table book while the topic was hot. The author has little expertise in the subject matter (is she a contract writer? - her previous book was about tiles) and the book reads like breathless brochureware. If you want to research the topic for free check out the great web site fabprefab.com which predates this book and is frequently updated. Also there are other great books on prefab such as Colin Davies The Prefabricated Home.
The book on Prefab to own.......2005-10-15
This book is incredibly well-written (even poetically written in places), meticulously researched, and beautifully illustrated. It's written by a pro, not someone who just decided to write a book. The book "Prefab" by Alison Arieff was in fact literally written off of (i.e. plagerized) websites and from articles (check the text against the architect's website and you'll see paragraphs and paragraphs were literally lifted directly from the site, likewise articles on those architects.)
This book is the real thing.
modern, yes; but very few homes available as prefabs.......2005-07-24
I was disappointed with this book. It includes profiles of 15 architectural firms. Seven of those profiles were of firms that have done one-off architect-designed homes made largely of pre-existing materials (usually shipping containers). That is not my definition of a prefab house. To me, a prefab house is one that I can order to be built on my lot. Of the eight firms that offer prefab houses, for three of them only computer-generated images were presented (not photos of real houses). That leaves only five firms offering prefab houses ready for market. Of those, one builds 10 houses per year in Finland. Another is in Australia. Two offer only really small homes (generally intended as second homes).
The book does include (small) design plans and many photos for most of the houses. However, the fact that very few of those homes are available for me to purchase makes the book almost useless.

Recommended.......2005-10-23
This book starts out by introducing basic concepts such as exposure, composition, lightning and how this effects landscape photographs. It then continues with an in-depth description of how to approach various landscapes and weather conditions. The text is clearly written and each concept emphasized with illustrative examples. The book can be followed by novices, but the large amount of tips and tricks should definitely attract more experienced photographers. Also nice about this book, is that the description of camera gear is done in a very general way, omitting examples of todays hardware (outdated tomorrow). Reading this book has strengthened my technical background and given me a lot of ideas that I'm eager to try out. I have no trouble recommending it.

Wow what a book.......2005-11-20
There I was thinking I knew about taking photograhs, but I learnt such a lot, and the sample pictures demonstrate with great clarity what the focus should and can be.
As a result I am now looking for more books from Michael Coyne.
some useful tips..........2005-09-21
I bought the lonely planet travel photography guide a few years ago and absolutely loved it! I learned a lot of the basics and really improved my "photo taking" skills. Therefore I was very excited when i found out about the publication of this book. However this people photography guide was disappointing. It provides some useful tips on taking photographs of people but the photos inside the book are not particularly inspiring. Some are good but many are just so-so. (whether one likes a photo or not is very subjective, in my view, but the photos inside this book are really not that exciting. may be i was expecting more from an expert in the field)
Book Description
Jessica Priest has always had sociopathic tendencies with an unusual preference for torturing and killing. That makes her a favored soldier with her boss, Jason Wynn, at the United States Security Group. Wynn always chooses Jessica - a sexy, dangerous and successful government operative - for the most challenging missions for his secret, self-serving and corrupt agendas. Masquerading as a suburban working mom, Jessica blows up weapons plants, starts skirmishes around the world and single-handedly recovers secret weapons, all while her family thinks she is away at boring sales meetings. Jessica`s latest assignment finds her in the Brazilian rainforest dodging alligators and piranhas as well as her own field agents. She manages to recover the Heat-16 bio-genetic weapon, but loses it to a weapons-grade uranium dealer when she is captured and forced to work as a slave in his mine. With so many insurmountable obstacles to overcome, will Jessica survive her latest mission and return to her family? In a separate story, teenager Ryan Hatchett commits suicide only to be caught between worlds as a zombie. Unprepared for his new circumstances, Ryan is mentored by the Freak, who assigns him the mission of rescuing his human girlfriend from certain death at the hands of the zombie ruler. Having a reputation as a mild-mannered nerd while he was alive is certainly different than his life as a zombie known as Hatchet, Executioner of the Dead.

Psychotic story of an underused character.......2001-04-01
Spawn fans often dog the character Jessica Priest. Why? Because she took the place of Chapel in the overall arc of the Spawn mythos. I would submit that Priest would be absolutely LOVED had she been introduced as anything other than the assassin of Al Simmons. 'Lost Values' contains a three issue story from the sorely missed 'Curse of the Spawn' series that delves into the absolutely psychotic nature of Jessica Priest. It also contains a single issue bonus called 'Deadland' (CotS # 22) that feaures some zombies and a new character: Hatchet.

The Longest-Surviving Ghetto in German-Occupied Poland.......2006-10-18
After the German-Soviet conquest of Poland in September-October 1939, the area around Lodz was directly annexed into the Third Reich and named Wartheland (the land of the Warthe (Warta) River). The city itself was renamed Litzmannstadt (after a WWI German officer then active in the area). Owing to the intensity of German rule imposed upon the population, Poles and Jews were less able to interact with each other compared with, for example, Warsaw. Within weeks of the start of the German occupation of Lodz, both Jews and Poles were subject to cultural genocide. In his introduction, Dobroszycki describes the burning of all synagogues by the Germans and, that very same day, their annihilation of the statue of Kosciuszko (p. xxxiv). The destruction of Christian institutions by the Germans included the conversion of one of the main churches of Lodz into a storage facility, as shown in one of the not-numbered photos situated between pages 424 and 427.
The Lodz ghetto was created by the Germans but not fully liquidated by them until the late summer of 1944. At that time, nearly all of its remaining inhabitants were murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Earlier, the Jews of Lodz had been steadily gassed and cremated at nearby Kulmhof (Chelmno). Dobroszycki credits the Poles with playing a major role in bringing these crimes to light: "Since January 1942, both the Polish and the Jewish resistance movements had gradually learned about the existence of the camp in Chelmno and the fates of the Jews deported there. The first information was obtained from Polish railroad workers, local residents, foresters; later, more detailed accounts were to come from eyewitnesses..." (p. xxii). Dobroszycki (p. 40) also points out that Polish Mischlinge (Jewish-gentile "half-breeds") were simply reckoned Jews and exterminated. In contrast, German Mischlinge was spared.
In the chronicle itself, mundane matters predominate. Interestingly, positive references to Poles far exceed negative ones. For instance (May 20, 1942): "The civilian population, the Aryans, and particularly the Poles, were very favourably inclined toward the Jews and, in large measure, the Jews from Brzeziny owe them their lives. They tell of one baker who baked a special quota of bread for the Jews, which he would have little children bring into the ghetto. The little children would bring one batch of bread into the ghetto, and then, before anyone knew it, they'd be back with another. Aryan friends would pass the Jews bacon, meat, and other products through the ghetto fence, more often than not without being paid for it. The Jews from Brzeziny see no analogies with the pre-war situation; anti-Semitism seemed to have vanished completely there." (p. 183). There are reports of Polish smugglers caught and arrested for bringing goods into the ghetto (December 10, 1942; p. 299. February 15, 1943; p. 320).
The foregoing accounts parallel, in many ways, those of Emmanuel Ringelblum relative to the Warsaw ghetto. They suggest that Poles and Jews did in fact tend to draw closer together during the German occupation of Poland. This is contrary to the position held by Yisrael Gutman.
Unlike some authors, those of this chronicle do not cast Mordecai Chaim Rumkowski (Rumkovsky), the Eldest of the Jews, in a negative light. However, in common with chroniclers of other ghettos, they do present the Jewish ghetto police in a collaborationist light, at least during the time of the deportations to the death camps (September 14, 1942): "In the meantime, the Jewish police were searching the apartments and bringing out anyone who had been hiding or people who were ill." (p. 251). A similar situation is described as follows (Thursday, July 13, 1944): "A shameful, shocking street scene. Jews hunting other Jews like game. A real Jew-hunt, organized by Jews. But what is to be done; there is no choice. Anyone who is called up must report." (p. 525).
Oddly enough, the chronicle does not mention significant events occurring outside the Lodz ghetto itself. For instance, there is no mention of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (April-May 1943) or of the general Warsaw Uprising (August-October 1944).
Missing pages.......2002-02-06
When I read the advertisement i have learned that list of names from Lodz ghetto should be in the book. I saw a few pages with the names , addresses etc. I was caught by surprise when I have opened this book - ther is no such list included. Could you, please, explain me how it's happened and more important how could I get those pages. Thank you very much.

Exploring Textures in Hispanic Historiography.......2000-08-31
The field of Hispanic history is entering an expanding and exciting era. A number of vibrant scholars have heeded Alex Saragoza's advice in his 1990 essay "Recent Chicano Historiography: An Interpreteative Essay" (Aztlan, Spring 1988-90, 1-77) to expand the historiography of the Hispanic experience in the United States. Jorge Iber's monograph is a successful attempt to accomplish such a goal. Iber's work explores the successes and obstacles that have confronted Mexican Americans in a state and region that has previously been neglected in the annals of the Hispanic experience. In the course of his study, he reveals the various divergent textures that constitute Utah's Hispanic population, dispelling the notions of Mexican Americans as a monolithic community of working class Catholics who all think, work, vote, and practice religion in a like manner. Iber's book is not strictly revisionist history; he does not discount or contridict the efforts of previous chroniclers of Mexican American history. Rather, he has added another layer to the expanding literature in the field. Spanish surnamed people do not exclusively reside in the Southwest or California and they are not all working class laborers. They are business owners and professionals and they are dispersed throughout the country. Iber has found that Utah's Hispanic population differs in many areas from Hispanics in other regions. They have developed unique communities, with the overarching difference due to the dominant presence of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah. In order to accomplish his goal (a goal he reaches successfully), Iber begins with an exploration of the founding of Utah's Hispanic community. He examines the birth of Utah's Mexican American community in the early twentieth century and continues with the changes within the community brought about by the Great Depression, World War II, and post-war America. He is particularly successful in demonstrating how the community was changed by the experiences of the period and the formation of a different attitude among Mexican Americans within the Beehive state. The crucible of economic distress and war, combined with the emergence of the second and third generations of immigrants, led to the development of a unique Mexican American culture within Utah's Hispanics, one that combined the traditional Mexican culture with American values and attitudes. Iber's discussion of the development of a unique Mexican American community in Utah, as well as his inclusion of class differences within the community is one of the key facets of his thesis of differing textures contained with Utah's Hispanic population. While Iber also explores the increased activism and emergence of militancy within the state (somewhat muted, given the small numbers of Hispanics in Utah), it is his discussion of religion throughout the monograph that forms the central core of the work. The LDS Church is without a doubt the most dominant institution in the state. Utah's Hispanics, however, for the most part brought their Catholic faith with them as they moved into the state. Catholic liturgy and the practice of the religion was often a tool of resitence against Anglo domination and a key facet of Hispanic ethnic identity. This unique identity was challenged in Utah. Since Hispanics were a small minority and the evangelical zeal of the Mormon Church was a strong entity within Utah, many of the state's Mexican Americans converted to the LDS Church. Conversion often meant the formation of a different history and societal develoment for Mormon Hispanics, another textural difference within Utah's Mexican American community. Acceptance of the Mormon faith often meant advancement for Mexican Americans in Utah; business, political, and social openings that were in many cases closed to those who retained their Catholic ties. Iber's treatment of the state's Hispanic business community is a notable portion of the book, one that is often forgotten in some scholarly studies. Hispanics in the Mormon Zion is a welcome and vital contribution to the growing understanding of Hispanic history. Iber's study of Utah's Mexican Americans represents the maturity of the field and a positive expectation of further studies of Hispanics in regions not often associated with this ethnic group. Perhaps the only addition to the work could be a more in depth discussion of the role Hispanic's play in Utah politics, but this is a mere minor quibble with a worthwhile and well-done book.
A Must Have!.......2000-07-13
This book is a must have for anyone seeking a better understanding of the history of Mexican Americans and their role in American history. Dr. Iber, thank you for this wonderful book about my ancestors!
Birth and development of a Hispanic community.......2000-06-17
My goal in this work is to present scholars and students of Mexican American history with an introduction to a neglected community. The Spanish-speaking people in Utah have both suffered and benefited from life in one of the 'whitest' states in the US. This work examines a wide range of topics such as working conditions in Utah mines and beet fields, family and religious life, the role of the LDS and Catholic churches in community life, and both the promises and problems that exist among this growing segment (now up to 120,000 or roughly 6%) of the state's inhabitants. It adds yet another piece to the mosaic which is the Hispanic/Latino history of the US.
