A nice inspiration source for charming, rustic country french design. I wanted more out of the book though - perhaps photos of full rooms rather than vignettes of tables and kitchen counters. It makes it hard to get a sense of design style without a full room effect in my opinion. The book does ooze charm and if you have other books on this style and just want a little extra something this would be ok. If however you really need a good book to learn all about french country style I would not suggest this one.

This book oozes with charm! The homes featured in this book are very old and beautifully brought back to life by its owners while respecting the history and integrity of these buildings. The title "Provencal Escapes" is appropriate since this book lets you escape into a dreamy and ancient world of Provence. The photos are gorgeous and you feel that you are actually walking through some of these homes. This book is a must for any fan of Provence or just of beautiful escapes. I highly recommend it!
Magnificant Redecoration of Older French Homes.......2005-10-12
This magnificant book consists of photographic studies of some 22 homes in the Provence and Cote d'Azur regions of France. These homes are primarily older (as much as 300 years) that have been seriously redecorated to make them into jewels of plesant styling.
For the most part, the redecoration of the homes has been to retain (or return to) the styling of the time they were built. Magnificant old beams show off well with modern appliances and decorations. The traditional outside of the houses hides the modern interiors. The original builders could not have imagined things we take for granted such as electricity that now has been fitted into their houses.
Redoing an old house is easily as expensive as modern construction, so these houses have not been done for cost savings but for other reasons like living in a part of history.
While this book concentrates on this region of France, many of the techniques used in these houses could well be applied to houses in the United States where old houses be they farm or city center can be made into something unique and wonderful.

BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS...........2004-08-26
Pure and simple, for most of us PROVENÇAL HOUSE is a coffee table book filled with exquisite detail found in several dozen homes in the south of France. Author, Joanna Thornycroft, has classified the structures Andreas Von Einsiedel photographed into `Town', `Manor' or `Country' houses. Short on text and long on photos, the premise of this publication seems to be a picure is worth a thousand words. Beginning with houses in the French Rivera and ending with Le Murier in hameau das Auvis, the author takes you on a trip through the land painted by Van Gogh and Pagnol.
Some of the homes are "simple" cottages, others the more ornate domains of the landed gentry or super-rich movie star. My favorite shots were taken in gardens, and show flowers, pots and rustic gates across cobblestone walkways that lead to the lane or another room of the garden. Small details such as a decorative window latch covered with several centuries of paint, delft-like kitchen tiles, and a rooster weather vane, remind me of the land of the Cathars-those God-fearing people who lived in this land that once harbored them as heretics who may or may not have been far from God but who must have understood how blessed life can be when the sun shines.
Architects may get some ideas from the recessed windows, the red tiled roofs, the stucco blue walls, and the marble bathroom fixtures, but the fabric-lined antique china cabinets, and nifty little accent touches in the various rooms depicted so lovingly make this book a must for interior designers and others seeking the "look" of Provence.
great inspirational book.......2004-06-04
I can be critical of design and house books after seeing so many, so it's a relief to finally be able to give a book five stars. The photographs are authentic and detail everything from interior to exterior, including gardens. The essence of French provincal style is captured and distilled here. The writing is clever and concise, although you'll hardly notice it because the pictures are so brilliant. This is an essential book if you're trying to capture the French provencal look in house design or interior design. This book gives you an authentic source reference.
Beautiful Book!.......2004-03-04
I'm an architect with the task of designing a "French" style home. This is one of several books I ordered to use as references. The appeal of this book for me is that it includes exterior architecture, interior design/decor, & gardens/landscapes. It is extensively illustrated with color photos & captions (my kind of book...). I can't critique the text because I have not yet had time to read it. But I can't get enough of the pictures!
Breathtaking.......2003-10-30
I picked this book up from the table of new releases at a local bookstore, sat in a chair, and didn't move except to turn the pages for the next 90 minutes. In more than 200 color photographs, The Provencal House explores the beauty of 16 Provencal homes - interior and exterior details, uses of color playing off the landscape, curves and arches and doorways. It's a beautiful celebration of an architectural way of life rooted in the land and its traditions.

If, by 1725, all the chemical and optical necessities for the practice of photography already existed, why wasn't the art form invented until 1839? Geoffrey Batchen, an associate professor of art history and author of Burning with Desire, has an interesting answer: people simply weren't ready for it. Along with a blossoming in literature, philosophy, music, and science, the 18th century was also host to a whole new way of thinking about nature and landscape. The camera obscura, a portable box equipped with a lens or a mirror, was a popular tool that people used to first capture views and then trace them. The ability to reproduce a scene--however imperfectly--whet people's appetites for more exact methods, leading first to what Batchen calls the "proto-photographers," and then sometime later to the invention of Louis Daguerre's daguerrotype and Henry Fox Talbot's photography in the same year.
Batchen's history lesson is filled with eccentric characters and fascinating insights into passions and obsessions of the Age of Enlightenment. The book becomes controversial, however, in Batchen's assertion that the early photographers, rather than trying to capture reality, were, in fact, attempting to decontruct it--long before Jacques Derrida created the theory of deconstruction. Whether or not you end up agreeing with Batchen, Burning with Desire is a unique look at photography's roots, one sure to engender heated discussion among enthusiasts of the art form.

In an 1828 letter to his partner, Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre wrote, "I am burning with desire to see your experiments from nature." In this book, Geoffrey Batchen analyzes the desire to photograph as it emerged within the philosophical and scientific milieus that preceded the actual invention of photography. Recent accounts of photography's identity tend to divide between the postmodern view that all identity is determined by context and a formalist effort to define the fundamental characteristics of photography as a medium. Batchen critiques both approaches by way of a detailed discussion of photography's conception in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He examines the output of the various nominees for "first photographer," then incorporates this information into a mode of historical criticism informed by the work of Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida. The result is a way of thinking about photography that persuasively accords with the mediums undeniable conceptual, political, and historical complexity.

Interesting and different, to say the least.......1999-01-24
Batchen's book is full of information and introduced me to several potential inventors of photography of whom I was unaware from reading the standard monographs in the field (e.g., Eder, Gernsheim and Gernsheim). This, however, is probably the least important of the book's many themes delivered on so many fronts. The idea that people somehow had to be ready for photography is thought provoking and different, but I still think greater weight should be placed on the conceptual leaps that had to be overcome. It is true that the optics for photography existed as early as 1685; it is equally true that the chemistry or photography was fully developed around 1775-1780. True, people were not rich enough to afford photographs and thus make the medium into a popular success, but there remains the lingering question of putting the chemistry and optics together, and if the book has a flaw, it is that Batchen gives this short shrift - but this material is available in abundance elsewhere. On the whole, for the interested (and already fairly well informed) layperson and specialist in the history of photography, this is excellent, eye opening and, yes, even mind bending reading. Someone wiser (and much funnier) than I said that he disliked arguments because they are always vulgar and often convincing - and much of what Batchen says is convincing. Even if I ultimately disagree with a lot of Batchen's conclusions, at least he has introduced me to some alternatives I did not think of on my own. Beyond this, questions arise regarding the nature of technology, innovation and invention. Ultimately, what is the purpose of technology? What prompts invention? What leads one to make the conceptual leap that links optics with chemistry and yields something as earth shaking as photography? Batchen's book seems as good a place as any when approaching questions such as these, at least on a serious, scholarly level.

my son loves this series because the author writes in real sports terms. Even though it is easy enough for a 1st or 2nd grader to read alone, it isn't baby-ish. We especially like the stories of players who beat the odds. A great series for your little hockey fan.

The ship had just left the island of Tinian, delivering components of the atomic bomb destined for Hiroshima. As the torpedoes hit, the Indianapolis erupted into a fiery coffin, sinking in less than fifteen minutes and leaving nine hundred crewmen fighting for life in shark-infested waters. They expected a swift, routine rescue, unaware that the Navy high command didn’t even realize that the Indianapolis was missing. Help would not arrive for another five days.

Well Written Account of a Tragic Tale.......2007-09-10
This book is my first real experience with the USS Indianapolis. Kurzman has written an excellent narrative of the incredible ordeal suffered by the American heroes aboard the ill fated heavy cruiser. The book seems to be well researched with plenty of first hand sources, and I have yet to find any conflicting information on the web, or elsewhere. I highly recommend the book to those with an interest in World War II, Naval History, or incredible survival. I should note that Kurzman seems dismissive of the religious beliefs of the crew, which is a regrettable flaw in an otherwise excellent book.
As bad as it gets (the story, not the book), even in war.......2004-05-21
I've read most if not all of the handful of books available on the USS Indianapolis, and this was the best and most readable factual account of the grim story. After successfully completing its top secret mission to deliver the bomb that ended WWII, the Indianapolis was torpedoed by an enemy sub as it sailed home. Most of her crew died in the water, many eaten by sharks, as horrified survivors watched helplessly. It would be days before the first survivors were rescued. But this is not the end of the story. The captain of the Indianapolis was put on trial where, in an unprecedented move, the Japanese sub commander was brought to the American courtroom to essentially testify against the captain. The two military leaders were brought face to face; the men of the Indianapolis who were also in court had to passively regard the enemy sub commander who had sunk their ship. Although ultimately exonerated, the captain killed himself.
It was very hard to believe the U.S. Navy managed to keep something secret that is still regarded as the worst naval disaster in US history. But I asked a relative who sailed the Atlantic on the same mission as the Indianapolis, delivering weaponry to Allies, if he heard the story, rumors, anything at all about this at the time it happened, and he assured me that no one knew anything about it. Amazing, considering he spent the war on ships sailing similar high risk missions. His ship was part of the great fleet that delivered the guns for the Normandy invasion. He said the battleships escorting them actually outnumbered the fleet: more ships were sent to protect them than ships carrying the weapons. Later in the Pacific, the men of the Indianapolis had no escort or protection at all.
There is a small but beautiful monument in honor of these men in Indianapolis, where survivors still gather once a year. I think one of the reasons this story is little known even today is that it's simply too big and too horrifying for Hollywood to handle. I did see a well done documentary recently, which showed available photography and interviewed survivors, in their 80s by this time. Every one of them still wept at the memory.

this book states all the facts but what is missing is the first hand accounts of being in the water. the author would have done more justice to the reader interviewing more of the survivors and japanese servicemen. this book is written too much of a second-hand account
Excellent Read.......2003-10-21
I read this book cover to cover in 2 days and found it very well written. Unlike other books regarding the tragedy surrounding the U.S.S. Indianapolis, the author did not linger too greatly on the court-martial aspect, but rather, went into detail about the crewmembers and their individual experiences which moved me emotionally as I read each of their accounts. The author did a nice job of allowing the entire story to unfold without cramming the pages with technical jargon or statistics which would otherwise impede my reading. Out of all the books I have read on the U.S.S. Indianapolis, this one was the only one to go into detail about the further ordeal of Crewman Adolfo Celaya who survived the sinking, the sharks, and the entirely horrendous and unspeakable ordeal only to be mistreated by his rescuers. At the end of the book, I was left so angry that he had to endure this treatment coupled by the fact that no other book that I had read on this subject mentions him and the treatment he received, except this one. Anyone who has an interest in the tragedy of the U.S.S. Indianapolis should read this book.
Good, but not yet great, version of this story.......2003-08-16
I was somewhat disappointed by this. Maybe it's because it was written by a 3rd party some 40 years after the incident and the memories of the participants are dulled. Maybe because the writing was fairly dry. I still read it all the way through as the story is compelling all by itself but it just lacked a sense of drama. I noticed recently that there is a second book out on this same incident and I have to wonder if it's a more compelling read?

Impeccably researched, Ms. Weddle's book illuminates the unstudied area of the practice of pacifism, as it was in England, then on board ships to the New World but mostly as the Quaker leaders began to govern the colonies in 17th New England. The Quaker leaders had a huge dilemma as pacifists: on the one hand they faced danger constantly and needed to protect their settlements, on the other hand they had renounced war and fighting as part of their "Peace Testimony". Not unlike today, the leaders were forced into compromises at times while under tremendous pressure to practice their principles. A large focus of the book is King Phillip's War of 1675-1676 between the Indians and English settlers. Ms. Weddle is not only a brilliant scholar but an entertaining storyteller, the book is a feast of captivating stories. History, philosophy, and theology buffs should have this in their libraries, certainly, but any reader with an inquiring mind and a love for good story should read this book. Historians have long believed that the European continent experienced a profound period of social, economic, and political crisis during the seventeenth century. This era saw the last stages of the great confessional wars; problems of a more general nature, such as economic depression and population decline, also plagued most European societies. Out of the ashes of the century's social, economic, and political dislocation arose a new political force, namely, the centralized state.
To participate in long-term warfare, expand their economies, and create strong armies, monarchs throughout Europe modernized their state apparatuses and in the process developed professional military administrations. Like other northern and eastern European countries that lacked the requisite population or resource base, Sweden relied on immigrants to supply the necessary technical skills and manpower to modernize its state apparatus and economy.
In Military Migration and State Formation, Mary Elizabeth Ailes focuses on British officers and their descendants in order to examine larger issues, including the role of the military in promoting elite migration, the opportunities that state building provided to elite foreigners, and the roles that immigrants played in promoting the expansion of the Swedish state. Additionally, Ailes's research demonstrates that international diplomacy did not rely solely on the negotiation of treaties and the conduct of official diplomatic visits. Foreign relations between states also developed on an informal level through the contacts that migrants maintained with their families and friends in their homelands and the social contacts they created in their new homes.

The mid-seventeenth century saw both the expansion of the Baptist sect and the rise and growth of Quakerism. At first, the Quaker movement attracted some Baptist converts, but relations between the two groups soon grew hostile. Public disputes broke out and each group denounced the other in polemical tracts. Nevertheless in this book, Underwood contends that Quakers and Baptists had much in common with each other, as well as with the broader Puritan and Nonconformist tradition. By examining the Quaker/Baptist relationship in particular, Underwood seeks to understand where and why Quaker views diverged from English Protestantism in general and, in the process, to clarify early Quaker beliefs.

This is an excellent book. It clearly explains differences between Quakers and Baptists in detail. The Lamb's War is, of course, that referred to in the Book of Revelations. One of the principal differences it identifies between Quakers and Baptists is that Quakers believe the second coming was purely spiritual and has already occurred. This is generally seen as an heretical view. That view explains the reason that traditional Quakers which most Quakers were until the 1850s at least, were politically conservative in American terms, even though they adhered to a religion which is generally regarded as being as at the far left of the Reformation. That is because strong left wing views religiously are often associated with a belief in a future second coming - a Millennarian attitude. Quakerism essentially repudiated any concept of a Utopia because the present world is indeed, the one that has already benefited from the second coming.
