Building a house? You need this book! Fantastic!.......2007-08-24
This book has more inspiration per page than any other book I;ve purchased on home building. This is a literal home idea book in one package. Floor plans , detailed pictures and amazing ideas are all within the package. I;m building a home and this book has provided more inspiration than all other books combined. Bravo, bravo, bravo. Save the decorator fees, just check out the ideas within. You won;t need a decorator!
I wish they would make more versions of this. These architects rock!!!
Uninspiring mass production homes.......2007-08-07
I live in California and have been throughout the state admiring authentic "Pure California" homes. The homes represented in this book are not much different in design from a number of uninspiring tract homes I've seen from North to South. I was hoping to find some authentic Early California design when Pasadena was mentioned. I didn't realize these were all new subdivisions. I was disappointed. The addition of floor plans is always a great idea; these just didn't offer the architectural elements I was looking for.
Good residential architecture inspiration!.......2007-05-29
Great design! All the residential projects: The floor plans, the overall building, the interior, the furniture layout, furnishing and landscape are really well designed.
I would like to recommend this book for those who loves residential, interior architecture. It's worthed.
Wow! Nice book and for a nice price!.......2006-01-14
For anyone who loves to do the Sunday-afternoon-drive-around-and-look-at-old-houses thing, this is the book for you. The quality of the photos is really impressive and while I suppose it'd best be described as a coffee-table book, it also contains a fair quantity of information about the houses and their style and influence and history of design.
While there is some history and corollary info, I was saddened to see not a word - not ONE word mind you - mentioned about Pacific Ready-Cut Homes. Perhaps you're thinking "what has that got to do with anything?", let me explain.
This book has quite a bit of info on Pasadena and whilst Pasadena is home to a stunning variety of architecture, it's also home to a wonderful collection of bungalows that were originally ordered as KIT HOMES from Pacific Ready-Cut Homes.
That being said, I was truly impressed with "Pure California" and found it to be a fun, easy read and a beautiful book with wonderful, strong-quality (and richly-colored) photos.

You have to be out of your mind to like this book.......2005-02-04
This book is the evident that the housing projects in the United States are mere products of the market force that lack inspiration, imagination, and progressive attitude. People who praise this book for its beautiful photographs only expose the biggest flaw in this book: there is no content. All the homes in this book are built on false premises of consumerist culture. There is no attempt to make the houses affordable or challenging the notion of domestic living. People may have bought the book because they like the drape or the furniture in it, but you will be better off buying yourself a copy of Martha Stewart's "Living" for that purpose. Don't waste your money on propelling the cycle of our wasteful culture, give that money to the charity and you will sleep better at night.

Disney's Art of Animation: From Mickey Mouse to Hercules.......2002-10-03
This book is excellent. It is also very different from the 1st edition in 1992 which featured Beauty and the Beast. About 50% of the book is all new from the previous edition and it's really worth owning both versions. Gives you much insight into the making of Hercules and in '92 edition into Beauty and the Beast. Great pictures and lots of good information in a very entertaining format. All ages in our family enjoy the book from 4 years old on up. You will too. I Wonder when the next edition will come out?
A great book!.......1999-07-24
This book is great! The only complaint I have is that the "middle" features seem to have been neglected. The very early and the very recent ones are well covered and illustrated. The section on Hercules is phenomenal!! But I would recommend The Encyclopedia of Walt Disney's Animated Chracters by John Grant instead of this one, it has more information and better pictures. But if you buy both that's even better! I did!

Wildly popular and critically acclaimed celebrity (and Oprah!(tm)-appearing) photographer Veronique Vial is also the official photographer for Cirque du Soleil, the widely adored theatrical troupe that mixes traditional circus performance tropes with imaginative mysticism and exotic storytelling in sold-out performances worldwide. Vial captures the vivid color, breathtaking special effects, and mesmerizing costume, set design, and troupe performances--in and out of water (eau)--that are the hallmark of Cirque's new Vegas venue at the Bellagio. Vial's unique capacity to distill the childlike mystery and awe of 'O,' the most elaborate Cirque du Soleil production ever mounted, creates in effect a wonderfully transcendent book for kids and adults alike, complete with fantasy narrative. Harry Potter would approve.
Customer Reviews:
O - what a crying shame!.......2005-02-08
I just saw the water-themed "O" by Cirque du Soleil at the Bellagio in Las Vegas mere days ago and was utterly spellbound by the otherwordly experience. Afterwards I decided to check out the souvenir shop and perused this book there. What I found inside were a bunch of lack-luster photographs taken from the spectacular performance, but none of them actually capture the magic of seeing it happen before your very eyes, and what a marvel it is to behold upclose!
In short, these images don't do the production justice! I would not recommend this to anyone who's considering buying tickets for the continuously sold-out "O" and would like to get a taste of what your in for because this may disgcourage you, and that would be a crying shame. Just trust in all the people that have raved about how amazing the show is and buy this simply as memorabilia.
Disappointing.......2003-09-18
This book gives you almost no taste of what the show is like. It is a collection of beautiful but artsy fartsy pictures, capturing the photographers style rather than this amazing show. The bad poetry dramatically inserted as captions to the pictures continues the slightly pretensious path the book took.
there are only TWO PAGES at the end of the book devoted to writing about the actual show. For a show that is completely groundbreaking and unique, that is far too little. It is almost all text that is available at the cirque site (an excelent site, as opposed to this book)
To see what this book could have been, take a look at the book of "Pride Rock on Broadway: Julie Taymor's The Lion King". This is a book about an amazing, one- of- a- kind show, packed with quotes from the creators, concept drawings, beautiful photographs, ideas that were cut, technical diagrams and explanations of problems that arose during production and how the team solved them. It is a book that any person, and *especially* a theater person from any discipline would love. That is the kind of book that this could have been, and it isn't.
If you want an artsy collection of photographs, this is for you. Otherwise, wait till you get a chance to actually see the show - it will be worth it!
Disappointing.......2003-09-05
While the pictures in here are quite good (not fantastic), that's mostly what the book is all about. Pictures. There's no story behind each of them. It's quite pricey for pictures. I'd wait a while until it comes down in price. As for the show? It's the best show you will ever see in your lifetime. Trust me. I've seen a show or two before, and this is something special.
Cover Photo Deceiving of Contents of Other Photos.......2003-08-20
This book appears as if ALL the photographs in it will be as outstanding as the cover picture but this is quite deceiving.
Considering the quality of the show, price of the book, etc... much more effort and professionalism should have been put into the photography.
Very disappointing with a handful of good photographs towards the end of the book.
Great Pictures of the best show in the world.......2001-06-06
I have just recived this book, and if you have ever seen "o" at The Bellagio and loved it and want good memories of it, this is the book you want! Buy this book if you love Cirque Du Soleil! I have seen the show 3 times and this a book of high quaility pictures taken from the show! Thanks

Great Story, Superbly Presented.......2005-10-12
I Suspect many people will buy this because they already know the artist, as well as the story. Over the years since this, and many other stories by Barks, have appeared, they have come in many formats, of which the best is the COLLECTED WORKS OF CARL BARKS, and now this series, including this title, comes in a nicely done cover, with Library quality paper. I have copies of this in a previous incarnation of the GLADSTONE prints, prior to the Publishers going bust. Thankfully, someone has realised that these titles are being bought by Adults who could not afford the collected works, but who wanted a title done in a collectable format that would last. Way too many versions of this title published since the late 50's and again in the 70s have been done on poor quality paper, and were priced accordingly.
This Ancient Persia title works well in this comic format, however, some of the titles occurred originally in a strip format, and suffer when transferred to the comic page format. However, I managed to get some of these titles in a "hard" cover binding that preserved the strip ratio, without resorting to the comic page ratio that was edited with apparently little thought ( these editions in original strip format came out about 1982-84, and as far as I am aware are not currently available anywhere... so I hope someone can examine some of the original formats, and see what best goes back to the strip format).
Enjoy ANCIENT PERSIA, if you read the original story years ago, this will echo beautifully in your mind in this lovely high quality paper print edition.
Another deep dive into our murky minds.......2005-03-02
Carl Barks is to little known in the US; in my homecountry of Sweden he is a minor deity on the other hand. Whole generations of Swedes have grown up reading his fantastic tales about Donald Duck, his nephews, Gyro Gearlose, and Scrooge McDuck.
Barks himself never understodd his own greatness. He thought that he only wrote dime-a-dozen stories for kids. Yet, once you are hooked on Barks you read him also as an adult - the genius is so obvious.
On the surface this is a simple adventure tale with comic interludes, but lurking beneath is fear and madness. This is perhaps his darkest tale. Set in an ancient Persian royal tomb. The cramped corridor, where the darkness waits just outside the circle of the torches gives a claustrophobic feel, which follows us throughout the story.
One moment the professor appears rational and sane, then he is revealed to be an insane megalomaniac. While the antics of the resurrected royal family are funny, there, again, are traces of hysteria and mental unbalance.
In the end they are so disgusted by the modern ways that they voluntarily seek oblivion in death. Donald Duck survives only by dying and being resurrected several times.
The tale is funny, but it also gives the impression that the artist had far darker things in mind when he wrote it: this was the fifties, we were living in fear of the atom bomb, and what else the scientists were dreaming up in their laboratories. The tunnels and darkness are our feeling of insecurity in a world bordering on war, and our helplessness to prevent it.

Book Description
David Pierpont Gardner was president of one of the world's most distinguished centers of higher learning--the nine-campus University of California--from 1983 to 1992. In this remarkably candid and lively memoir he provides an insider's account of what it was like for a very private, reflective man to live an extremely public life as leader of one of the most complex and controversial institutions in the country. Earning My Degree is a portrait of uncommon leadership and courage and a chronicle of how these traits shaped a treasured, and sometimes mystifying, American institution.
Before his tenure as president, Gardner spent seven years at the University of California, Santa Barbara, during a tumultuous era of culture wars, ethnic division, and anti-Vietnam War protests, leaving his post as vice chancellor to serve as vice president of the University of California from 1971 to 1973. In 1973 he was named president of the University of Utah, and while there he chaired the National Commission on Excellence in High Education, which authored A Nation at Risk, regarded today as the twentieth century's most telling report on the condition of American public schools. As president of the University of California, he contended with intense controversies over affirmative action, animal rights, AIDS research, weapons labs, divestment in South Africa, and much more. This memoir recounts his experiences with these and other issues and describes his dealings with the diverse cast of characters who influence the university: U.S. presidents, governors, legislators, regents, chancellors, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and donors. The epilogue of Earning My Degree is a thoughtful and engaging account of the ten years since Gardner's retirement that includes his personal views about what has truly mattered in his life.

Book Description
The life story of one of today's NHL superstars at the peak of his profession is told through color photographs of the star in action. In a text aimed at eight- to eleven-year-olds, Kerry Banks focuses on Teemu Selanne, the "Finnish Flash." During his first NHL season in 1992, Selanne demolished all previous rookie records for goals and points and earned a reputation among goalies as one of the most feared forwards on the ice. Since then, Selanne's blinding skating speed, quick and accurate shot, and superb playmaking skills have made him indispensable to his team, the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. Find out where it all started by following Selanne's career from his early days in Finland, up through the ranks of the Finnish hockey system, and into the fast-paced world of the NHL. The author lives in Vancouver, British Columbia. 48 pages (all in color), 6 1/2 x 8.
Book Description
As the Imperial Japanese Army swept across China and South Asia at World War II's outset, closing all of China's seaports, more than 200,000 Chinese laborers embarked on a seemingly impossible task: to cut a 700-mile overland route -- the Burma Road -- from the southwest Chinese city of Kunming to Lashio, Burma. But when Burma fell in 1942, the Burma Road was severed. As the first step of the Allied offensive toward Japan, American general Joseph Stilwell reopened it, while, at the same time, keeping China supplied by air-lift from India and simultaneously driving the Japanese out of Burma.
From the breathtaking adventures of the American "Hump" pilots who flew hair-raising missions over the Himalayas to make food-drops in China to the true story of the mission that inspired the famous film
The Bridge on the River Kwai, to the grueling jungle operations of Merrill's Marauders and the British Chindit Brigades,
The Burma Road vividly re-creates the sprawling, sometimes hilarious, often harrowing, and still largely unknown stories of one of the greatest chapters of World War II.
Customer Reviews:
The story is epic, but not the book........2007-06-22
If you have read nothing about the China-Burma-India theater in World War II, Webster's "The Burma Road" is a quick reading introduction. Caution is recommended as Webster's effort to keep the book accessible while recounting the events in the enormous and complex CBI theater often leaves him wrong-footed.
It is a bad sign when one goes a mere 29 pages in before encountering a factual error. The first attack Japanese attack on the Philippines was made on December 8, 1941 roughly 12 after the attack on Pearl Harbor and can be seen as following "only hours" after the attack at Pearl Harbor. However, the date given by Webster is December 10 and, international date line or not, December 10 is not "only hours" after the attack on Pearl Harbor.
While Siam may have been "increasingly called Thailand since 1936", the name of the country was changed officially in 1939. Thus, by 1941, referring to "west-central Siam" is a complete misnomer since the country was by then called Thailand and the reference should be clearly to "west-central Thailand".
The heart of this book is the story of "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell, his command of the theater and his overcoming of its many difficulties. Webster is good at recounting the challenges faced by Stilwell as the last in line for any material or forces needed. But, the relationship of Stilwell to Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese government was very complicated. Webster is clearly a Stilwell partisan, as are many, but this work does not come close to Tuchman's "Stilwell and the American Experience in China" which remains the book to read on this period.
Finally, for the editors and publishers. a book does not need a table of contents, but in a military history, leaving out the list of maps is a grievous error. Moreover, towns mentioned in the text really should be indicated on the maps.
Burma Road -- History and Travel.......2006-11-21
A terrific book. Historical context mixed with current travel experiences in the region. This book provides a solid view of the Bushido culture which causes such a high death toll for POWs in Japanese camps. As this part of the world becomes more accessible, this is a must read for visitors to Myanmar who want some historical background.
Vinegar Joe's story finally told.......2006-07-17
With a colorful name like this you would think he would be better known for his role in WWII. Vinegar Joe Stilwell was slated to be the Commander of Allied forces in the North African campaign. Unfortunately for Vinegar Joe that was not to be and the job ended up going to Eisenhower.
Due to Vinegar Joe's Chinese language ability he ended up working in China with Chiang Kae-shek. Vinegar Joe led the allied efforts in China, Burma, Northern India, and Thailand. He was the ranking officer onboard the Missouri when Japan surrendered.
As far as military books go this one is a bit dry at times. It is lacking when it comes to campaign maps. It is also a little tough to follow at times. That being said it is a very good book for a scarcely covered topic. It shows the tenacity of Japanese fighters and the extreme lengths they went to in their campaigns. It even goes into the politics and corruption that caused China to fall to Communist forces. Also shows how politicians sacrificed their Generals when they were no longer useful.
All in all this is a very good book for anyone interested in military history, strategy, and politics.
"Vinager Joes Story".......2006-07-06
For anyone who is interested in a little known theater of WWII. This is a well written and fact filled read. Primarily the story of Gen. Joe (Vinager Joe) Stilwell. In an arena of larger than life names,Merrill, Wingate, Mao, and Chian Kai-shek, Gen.Stilwell`s story pull all the elements together in an way that, a telling from other angles might not. As my first book on this subject, I feel Mr Webster gave me my money`s worth in a book that was hard to put down.
A good solid read if you're a fan of the genre.......2005-10-15
Overall I'd say this was a pretty good book as a historical war record. It shines the light on an oft forgotten theatre in WWII and dissects both the political and military aspects with clarity. Even as a self-professed WWII history buff many of these details were not known by me. So, for that I'd have to give this book high marks simply for the depth of information on this mostly unknown piece of WWII history. The background on General Stilwell is of particular interest as the man who stubbornly ran the war against all odds. Stilwell's army constantly faced a multitude of diseases, lack of supplies, horrible climatic conditions and a relentless enemy and the book covers these in detail, from dysentery to flying supplies over the "hump" to first hand accounts of Japanese banzai charges. Handcuffed by U.S. military planners and General Chiang Kai-shek policies, Stilwell shows his mettle and does a superb job of getting things done with the little resources he had available. I found it especially interesting that the author notes that Gen. Stilwell had first been selected to lead the D-Day invasion of Europe, but because of his unique qualifications he was chosen for the Burma-India theatre with Eisenhower instead leading the invasion or Normandy. Could we perhaps have had a President Stilwell if he had overseen D-day and not Ike? Some of the guerilla warfare with details of firefights was especially engaging. At times however the book did bog down and get a bit dry with all the "logistical" details and I had to slog my way past that. But, in the end it was a satisfying book. If you're a history, military and/or political science fan, then this book is right up your alley. If you only have a general interest in the topic, I'd probably recommend you pass.
Book Description
How should we understand the relation of the Holocaust to the broader historical processes of the century just ended? How do we explain the bearing of the Holocaust on problems of representation, memory, memorialization, and historical practice? These are some of the questions explored by an esteemed group of scholars in Catastrophe and Meaning, the most significant multiauthored book on the Holocaust in over a decade.
This collection features essays that consider the role of anti-Semitism in the recounting of the Holocaust; the place of the catastrophe in the narrative of twentieth-century history; the questions of agency and victimhood that the Holocaust inspires; the afterlife of trauma in literature written about the tragedy; and the gaps in remembrance and comprehension that normal historical works fail to notice.

Book Description
Memories of catastrophes--both those which occur naturally and those which are consequences of human actions--loom large in the modern consciousness. The volume opens with an investigation of the concepts of catastrophe and collective memory, and the relationships between them. Arguing that a pervasive catastrophic memory may be as disabling as it is instructive, Gray and Oliver stress the necessity of rendering the phenomenon subject to secular critical inquiry. The value of such an approach is then demonstrated in a series of case studies.
