The quonset hut, that sliced tube of corrugated metal, was the answer. Over a hundred thousand were produced as part of the war effort. There are few good books describing the Quonset Hut, its origins and how it became such an icon of US military (and later, civilian) life, and this may be the best of the lot. Filled with plans, drawings, archival photos and period advertisements, the book illustrates not only the serious but the humorous consequences that the huts from Quonset Point, RI had on America, especially in the post-war era. (Did you know that future US President Gerald Ford started his first political campaign out of a Quonset hut in Grand Rapids, Michigan?) It's a well-researched and illustrated study of these ubiquitous structures, and how they altered the landscape.

If you've been looking for a good book on the Quonset hut, this is it.

Though the title may spawn a smile or chuckle from some, it will certainly arouse diverse stories from those who have resided, worked, or otherwise experienced a quonset. This survey of its development, history, and influences through time is concisely presented. Well stocked with photos, drawings and thorough research, this book also shows prominent architects whose designs were inspired by the quonset. Charles and Ray Eames, Buckminster Fuller, Campbell & Wong were among them. A few pages are devoted to Bruce Goff, including his Quonset-derived designs for the Camp Parks Chapel and the Ford House in Aurora, Illinois.

My favorite Quonset-inspired design, however, is that from James W. Fitzgibbon: the 1950 Daniel residence in Knoxville, Tennessee. Fitzgibbon is known for his partnering with Buckminster Fuller in developing the geodesic dome as well as a distinguished academic career. If published today, Daniel residence would fit well among any of our great organic masterpieces.

Quonset Hut would be an interesting and welcome addition to any Modern book library.

Nice guide for beginners, with some info for experienced DV'ers.......2006-03-14

All things considered this book was just barely worth the price for anyone with some basic background knowledge of the subject, however it was very poorly edited/published exactly as other reviews were quick and clear to state.
Fortunately, I read these reviews and was prepared, but some of the publishing and editing errors were well beyond expectations and reasonability. Paragraphs ending in mid-stream on one page, with new subjects and wording starting on the subsequent page....with no hint of the remainder of the unfinished paragraphs anywhere in the book.
I considered sending it back for a refund (before and after I read the entire book), just because the problem is so glaring!

A very good book but with printing defects.......2004-11-05

I've read several other video how-to books and this is one of the best. The book provides a lot of detail about common video issues that other books gloss over. For example, the author, Pete May, offers insights about choosing cameras that no one else does. I might have given this book 5 stars if not for the printing defects. As another reviewer noted, some text is repeated and some is obviously missing. I'm going to return the book just so I can read the missing text. I don't want to miss any of the author's advice.

From the few pages I read, the book showed a lot of promise. It was enticing and pulled the reader to read on to the end.

However, disappointment quickly set in due to defects in printing. The opening pages had text missing (sentences that stopped at the end of the page didn't continue on the next page), and there were several paragraphs of repeated text from one page to several pages later.

Sounds like the software used to put this book together had a couple drinks before printing. I would assume that a batch of books would have this problem as other reviewers here have praised the book without any problems like this.

Check the book out as soon as you receive it (to avoid the 30day return policy). I had to return mine from Australia.

Appropriately enough, the cover of this installment of America's favorite Lesbian cartoon "soap-opera" depicts our heroines at... the Laundermat! Alison Bechtel's "Dykes To Watch Out For" comic strip is a long-enduring feature of Gay weekly newspapers, but it is best to read it in paperback collections. The series has been compiled into nine separate books. I recommend reading them in chronological order! The art is fantastic, but the creator pays particular attention to story continuity. Mo and her cronies grow and develop throughout the series. The characters are so real and appealing, we come to regard them as old friends whose lives we've shared. Watch out for these dykes as they get involved with community, careers, family, friends, feminism, political activism, recreation, romance, and relationships. The comedy is often laugh-out-loud hilarious, but serious subjects are treated with sensitivity. Heterosexual readers, even male readers, can identify with Bechtel's Lesbian characters and their very normal life situations.

An earlier work, combines classic humor and great art.......1997-04-21

Mo episodes 24-77, this book contains Bechdel's characteristic humor and well-rendered characters. I loved it, and as always found many of my friend's adventures worth grins and chuckles. It lacks the smooth quality of her later works, and you search in vain for the easily missed background humor which make multiple reads of her books so much fun. Still, it contains some great lines, as when Miko opines "Anchovies on your fiurst date? Kinky!" A must for a dedicated reader, this book is probably not the best choice for someone approaching the series for the first time.

Given that it is estimated that 13 million Americans are to suffer from Age-Related Macular Degeneration, it is time that someone from the field of medicine step forward into the realm of natural medicine and give us hope. In this book, Dr. Kondrot introduces an alternative approach to help heal macular degeneration at a time that conventional medicine does not have much to offer patients with this diagnosis. Dr. Kondrot has introduced his approach in three main parts in the book. In the first section he teaches the value of a healthy diet, balanced exercise, and stress management. In the 2nd section, he recommends additional nutritional and eye specific herbal supplements to support circulatory and nervous system. And finally in the 3rd section, three revolutionary techniques are introduced: classical homeopathy, chelation therapy and micro-current stimulation. Most of us have herad of chelation therapy in relation to treating heavy metal toxicity or cardiovascular disorders. The idea of chelation therapy as a treatment for macular degeneration will strike most readers as quite novel. Likewise, many will not have heard of Microcurrent Stimulation, an adaption of TENS unit used for pain management, to stimulate eye circulation. In classical homeopathy, a correct constitutional remedy is useful in healing the person as a whole and can bring miraculous outcome when combined with the rest of the mentioned therapies. Patient testimonials are especially compelling. Readers will find this book easy to read because of its' simple language, slightly oversized font and roomy page layout. In addition the upbeat, and friendly tone provides encouragement and support for the readers in the healing process. Resources are helpful to acquire the mentioned products. It is wonderful to know that the material in this book is compiled from years of work and dedication of a respected specialist who has dared to go the distance in this field.

A masterpiece of generality.......2000-04-07

I purchased this book for a family member who is in the early stages of glaucoma, hoping that holistic approaches might reduce the probability of surgery later on. While the book does provide some useful information regarding the importance of selenium, chromium and lutein in the maintenance of eye health, its extremely general information on most topics is almost useless. For example, Kondrot states that it is important to minimize stress and avoid processed foods, both factors in decreasing the body's retention of toxic compounds. However, he also seems to advocate avoidance of large quantities of fluids. This is contrary to his own hypothesis that it is important to clear the body of toxins, and ignores the fact that diabetics(who are a large proportion of his target audience)cannot safely do this for an extended period of time! On the subject of stress relief, his advice is also very general, although not dangerous in its execution. In short, the only truly useful information provided in the book comes in the area of dietary adjustment and the use of mineral supplements. Note: This book would probably be much more useful to individuals with eye disorders who are not afflicted with diabetes.

The sIG 33 was the most powerful support weapon for the German infantry at the beginning of the war and from 1940 it was mounted on a range of tracked vehicles. This book demonstrates the construction of five 1/35-scale models of specific examples of the various self-propelled sIG 33 vehicles. The modeller is led through the various skill levels of construction by combining existing kits with some aftermarket accessories and scratch-built items.

Another gem in the series from Osprey that focuses on specific vehicles to model.

While this publication, like the others in the series doesn't have a specific article for a straight OOB (out of the box) build it still contains such a wealth of information that I would recommend it to any modeller of German armor in WW II. It is always up to the modeller to add whatever level of detail they want to a specific kit and this book will give you all the details you need for this series of vehicles.

Above all, Gary's modelling talents and the clear photography featured in this publication are really worth the purchase price alone.

I highly recommend it to any German AFV modellers.

Super Detailers Guide to Bison and Grille.......2006-07-10

As usual with this series, the author starts with a kit and adds resin and photo-etch after-market items as well as parts from other kits and some scratch-building to make super-detailed finished models. Not for the beginner, casual model builder, or the penny pincher.

For those who don't know about these, the Bison and Grille were tank chassis modified to mount a 150mm schwere Infanterie Geschutz (heavy Infantry Gun) for support of the infantry. These were low velocity cannon maent for bunker busting, not tank destroying.

The Girondins of Chile tells of the strong influence that the European revolutions of 1848 had in Chile, and how they motivated a young Santiago society with high cultural aspirations but little political knowledge or direction. Benjamin Vicuna Mackenna, a Chilean writer and historian who lived during those days in Santiago, relates the events of the time, events in which he was a participant. He pays special attention to how the 1848 revolutions influenced a group of young liberals he called "Chilean Girondins." When news of the fall of Philippe d'Orleans and the installation of the Second Republic arrived, there was an explosion of jubilation in Santiago. Now there were no barriers to ideas, "much less to the generous ideas proclaimed by the sincere people of France." But when a proletarian revolution took place in France in June, Chilean public opinion became virulently anti-revolutionary. Except, of course, among the liberal youth, the Chilean Girondins, who were headed towards revolution--and sooner than anyone thought. When revolution came in 1851, Vicuna Mackenna found himself sentenced to death for taking part in the uprising. After escaping and spending some years in exile, he was able to return in 1855. He remained active in politics, yet his account of what happened in the 1851-52 revolution was not published until 1876.

Over many years, this book continues to impress.......1999-07-14

In the early 80's, I took an Informal Logic course as part of my Computer Science training. This book was the text. Over the years, I continually look back to the concepts that I learnt and the way this book presented them. It is within my top 10 list of books that have "changed my life" in that it gave me tools that have never become dated and continue to serve me well. In my present work, we always look at how we can assist people in developing the ability to think critically and "for themselves" -- this book is a must read to that end.

Obviously I am little biased about the book, because I wrote it myself!

I notice that Book 1 (for 8 to 14 year olds) is out of print in the US. It, (along with Book 2) are still in print in my homeland, Australia.

They are available from Hawker Brownlow Education, in Melbourne, Australia.

Book 2 is my favourite. It was first published in 1994 and is for those 12 years to Adult. Covers mathematics, the development of research skills, world history and geography (as does book 1), but additionally contains sections on Debate, Decide and Design - relating to the development of debating, decision making, reasoning, creative thought and design.

Each of these aspects are critical outlets for the gifted and talented in our schools and homes.
