Book Description

Architecture should be an affirmation of place—that is, the physical product of a truly environmentally responsive approach. To work with the place and its traditions is not to be trapped in a dull set of conventions. The tension between timeless ways and the all-too-timely circumstances that call a new building into being should lead to a vital architecture. The tension between the past and the presence of the past should foster an architecture more culturally resonant than one that is either is all about the past or all about the present. —Robert A. M. Stern

Robert A. M. Stern is dedicated to the synthesis of tradition and innovation. In more than thirty-five years of practice, he has produced a wide range of building types with a variety of stylistic influences, all inspired by the great legacy of American architecture. His firm, Robert A. M. Stern Architects, was first recognized for its distinguished houses, and residential design remains the cornerstone of the practice. This beautifully illustrated monograph—a companion to the best-selling Robert A. M. Stern: Houses—presents twenty-six of the firm's most memorable houses.

Located in diverse settings across North America—from a valley in Colorado with sweeping views of the Aspen mountains, to a bluff overlooking Long Island Sound, to an island off the coast of British Columbia—these remarkable houses reveal the architect's emphasis on the importance of context and his dedication to exploring the nature of place. Each house invokes the vernacular architectural heritage particular to its region, while gracefully reflecting its unique natural surroundings. Whether they are shingle style "cottages" by the sea, colonial Georgian country estates, or elegant Regency designs, Stern's houses are unique both for their timelessness and their ability to evoke a conversation with the past—a dialogue he believes lies at the heart of architecture.

3 out of 5 stars Very Similar to Houses.......2006-02-23

I thoroughly loved his first residential book "Houses." With the amount of work he has done I expected this book to focus on new work but many of the same projects and pictures from the first book were used in this one.

4 out of 5 stars Stern Yet Elegant.......2006-01-07

This book on Robert Stern, the latest in a series, is very well executed. Mr. Stern really has a knack for anachronistic grand homes, they are a throw back to another time, but with all the modern luxuries money can buy. Stern has a real feel for the kind of gardens that complement each type of home, and the interaction between the two is often quite breathtaking. The images in this book are first rate and the homes are amazing. If you appreciate excellent photography, elegant architecture, and spectacular homes and gardens then you will love this book

This book is a great resource for graphic designers looking for ideas for web site illustrations. Broad color schemes, dramatic but often simple posters many of which could be adapted as animations. A beautiful tribute to the great children's authors.

                Book Description

These 54 unique children's tales are written by slightly older children. They include an animated bus that breaks down in a bad part of town while carrying nuns, a duck that eats too many strawberries for his own good, and a basketball game between bunnies and tigers. The stories in Exactly transport readers, young and old, to imaginative new worlds. Each story is vividly illustrated by one of 40 professional artists. What’s more is that these 54 uniquely crafted tales are written and edited by juniors and seniors at Wallenberg Traditional High School in San Francisco. These tales cover adventure and fantasy, and mold old fairy tales to fit a new generation’s taste.

                  Book Description

Among the many eminent and talented artists involved in the creation of illustrations for the wood-engraving resurgence of the 1860s, George John Pinwell emerged as perhaps the very best. A thorough review of Pinwell's art, especially his graphic æuvre, highlights the extraordinary importance the popular graphic arts played in the development of nineteenth-century British realism. This book discusses Pinwell's relationship to the commercial and technical world of stylistic Victorian journalism and his works' thematic significance to Victorian art. Also discussed is the stylistic influence of John Everett Millais (1829-1896); Pinwell's relationship to other artists of his generation including Frederick Walker (1840-1875), Arthur Boyd Houghton (1836-1875), and John William North (1841-1924), as well as his legacy for the next generation of artist/illustrators including Luke Fildes (1844-1927), Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914), and Frank Holl (1849-1914)-all contributing to a broader understanding of Pinwell's stylistic importance.

The Nat. Geo. Photography Field Guide is, unfortunately, too large to be a true field guide and too small to provide enough information to be worth the price. Many of the tips are easily found in other publications. The quality of print is great, but I question a field guide that is too large and heavy to take into the field. I think they missed a bet in not going to a larger format and providing more photos and more information. Trying to be all things to all people seldom works well.

                            Book Description

How much should you encourage your child when he or she wants to become a professional athlete? Is it realistic to believe your son can really make it in the NHL? When Craig and Roberta McCarty were faced with that decision, they told Darren to always have a plan and they would stand behind him - whatever it took. What it took was a lot of family sacrifice but what it led to was a two-time Stanley Cup winning career with the Detroit red wings.

What the family hadn't planned on was the individual struggles both father and son would have to face. After watching his son battle with alcoholism, Craig had to concern himself with his own health when he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma terminal cancer. After years of disagreement, father and son put the past behind them and vowed to be there for each other through their difficulties. On Fathers Day, 1997, Darren started the McCarty cancer Foundation, using his presence in the Detroit community to raise awareness and funds for research into this little-known disease.

Rinkside is a truly inspirational story of a family struggling to beat the odds and their discovery that a family unit is not disposable, but truly one of the most valuable things in life.

My book was called RINKSIDE. I really liked it because it tells how Darren McCartys life was and how his dad Craig McCarty had cancer and how his son Darren made a McCarty Cancer Foundation. I would recommend this book to some body how likes hockey and how a family saves people from cancer.

                            5 out of 5 stars GOD I LOVED IT!!!!!!!.......1999-08-06

Well as a die hard Darren McCarty fan, I thought that this book was very well written. Darren and his Dad have gone through so much in there lives and I thought that those two great guys need some major thanks. Not only has Darren proved that he is a good player and battling alcoholizm but he was his dad's strenght when he needed it, with his dad battling cancer, they held each other up..and Darren's Dad gets another thanks from me, for raising the best damn hockey player with the most potential, in the entire NHL>!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book for all hockey parents.......1999-03-22

I picked up this book hoping it would keep my attention. It has been several years since I have read an entire book. I was not disappointed. Not only did I read it from front to back in a day, then my husband read it, then my ten year old son. It is truly a book interesting for the whole family. Our family could relate to most of the experiences described in the book. The book shows what parents go through for their young children and how the children turn around and can make you so proud. The book does not "surgar coat" anything, he tells it like it is, good or bad.

5 out of 5 stars Courage and determination is a major part of how we succeed........1999-02-07

When I had started reading this book, I never expected not to be able to put it down. When you think of celebrities (sports and entertainers), most people don't realize that they too have problems. This book made me realize that no one is invisible. Alcoholism and cancer can hit anybody. This told about how their family has dealt with these problems and continue to do so. It also tells of determination and courage. The determination Darren had to make it in the NHL, and Craig's courage to fight the cancer. I was a big fan of Darren McCarty before, but I never admired him. Now I do!

The only thing this book is good for is getting high with your friends then reading the dialogue aloud. The thought that anyone actually believes or takes the "situations" in this crap serious is so befuddling it's scary. This is nothing more than propaganda for some strange religious cult. I don't know about you but if I'm going to buy a book to help me with my kids it's going to be by an expert, not some failed fiction writer.

I bought this book in the 80's and it did wonders for me! It helped me to get control of "me" again... and I went forward with my son from there.

                              5 out of 5 stars Description.......1999-07-19

Having a child addicted to alcohol or drugs is one of the most heartbreaking and challenging problems that parents may face. Here, in a revision of her bestselling 1982 book, Neff offers practical, loving and completely updated help to those struggling with that situation. Although the specific 12-step program that Neff stresses does not exist everywhere, parents can adopt the principles she outlines and form support groups with other parents. Central to Neff's approach is "detachment from the abuser," which entails allowing the abuser to "bottom out" without "padding the corners" (often called "enabling" in other references). This method, argues Neff, provides one of the few hopes for the abuser and his or her family. It is also terrifying, however, to parents who lack the support and distancing of the tough-love approach. By far the largest part of Neff's book is devoted to the stories of seven families who have faced the crisis of the addicted child and come through it stronger and more spiritually intact. In short, this book should be required reading for every parent with a child in trouble.

The King's Body offers a unique and up-to-date overview of a central theme in European history: the nature and meaning of the sacred rituals of kingship. Informed by the work of recent cultural anthropologists, Sergio Bertelli explores the cult of kingship, which pervaded the lives of hundreds of thousands of subjects, poor and rich, noble and cleric. His analysis takes in a wide spectrum, from the Vandal kings of Spain and the long-haired kings of France, to the beheaded kings of England and France, Charles I and Louis XVI.

Bertelli explores the multiple meanings of the rites related to the king's body, from his birth (with the exhibition of his masculinity) to the crowning (a rebirth) to his death (a triumph and an apotheosis). We see how particular occasions such as entrances, processions, and banquets make sense only as they related directly to the king's body. Bertelli also singles out crowd-participatory aspects of sacred kingship, including the rites of violence connected with the interregnum (perceived as a suspension of the law) and the rites of expulsion for a tyrant's body, emphasizing the inversion of crowning rituals.

First published in Italy in 1990, The King's Body has been revised and updated for English-speaking readers and expertly translated from the Italian by R. Burr Litchfield. Deftly argued and amply illustrated, this book is a perfect introduction to the cult of kingship in the West; at the same time, it illuminates for modern readers how strangely different the medieval and early modern world was from our own.

Ably translated from the original Italian by R. Burr Litchfield (Professor of History, Brown University), The King's Body: Sacred Rituals Of Power In Medieval And Early Modern Europe by Sergio Bertelli (Professor of History, University of Florence) presents an amazing and scholarly focus on a critical piece of European history: the nature and meaning of the sacred rituals associated with kingship. From the Vandal kings of Spain to the long succession of kings in England and France, The King's Body explores the multiple significance of rituals from birth to crowning and death. Very highly recommended for anyone with a keen interest in the history of the European monarchies, the black-and-white illustrations of classical artwork enhance this scholarly and serious historical analysis.

                                      Book Description

Toward the end of the nineteenth century dawned an age, all but forgotten. It was an era of immense flying machines, tall buildings, electric wires and telegraph cables. Miracles of science astonished the masses of Europe and the United States daily. Thomas Edison arose to prominence on an empire of stolen patents. He epitomized the spirit of the industrial age.

Suddenly Edison faced a mysterious rival, the enigmatic genius Nikola Tesla. This Serbian inventor tackled the problem of generating and utilizing alternating current, making Edison's direct current monopoly obsolete. He went on to invent radio before Marconi, develop X-rays and telephonics, and contributed fluorescent and neon lighting, microwave technology and wireless systems for the generation and transmission of current anywhere in the world for free.

His experiments in his Colorado Springs laboratory led to the building of towering Tesla coils, for the generation of artificial lightning, to be harnessed by his technologies. He built Wardenclyffe Tower to power the world on limitless energy and faced sudden financial ruin in 1905 when investor J. P. Morgan withdrew his financial support while claiming exclusive rights to the inventor's works.

Tesla: The Modern Sorcerer is an epic tale of the early age of technology, the climax of the industrial revolution. It is also a fascinating study of one of history's most prodigal geniuses.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Book I Have Ever Bought.......2007-04-01

I found this book on the "Physics" section of a Borders Bookstore, which led me to believe I was buying a biography of Nicola Tesla (as I was traveling abroad I didn't have much time to check on the author). What I found was a book full of made up dialogues (and of cuestionable quality at best), written by a guy whose other two books are about UFO's and aliens.

I wished there was a direct way to contact Borders bookstores to ask why is a book that is OBVIOUSLY fiction placed on the physics section. I would steer away from this book unless I was in the mood to read pretty crappy fiction.

1 out of 5 stars This book is not what you think..........2001-09-06

Tesla, The Modern Sorcerer, is not what I expected. I wanted an biography of the scientist, but the dialogue with his father at the start led me to believe that it was a children's book, assuming details of actual dialogue were not recorded for posterity. However, after a more careful inspection of the jacket, I found that although the book is labeled Science / Alternate Technology, it is none too clearly also identified as a novel. This is not bad in itself. However, the writing is terrible! Names, dates and place are given and dropped as quickly without having any kind of cohesion. It became apparant to me that the author had writen an outline to help him structure his story, but then he copied the outline and filled in nothing. Details and dialogue are stacatto and stilted. He references, at one point, a machine that runs at so many Webers, without defining what a Weber is or even mentioning it again. Details appear to be decently researched, but the "novel" concept allows these to be manufactured. The authors other works are novels about UFO abductions, and he uses this book to tout his UFO theories. A waste of time to read, but perhaps interesting to a child without previous knowledge of science.

                                      3 out of 5 stars A novelized history.......2000-02-19

Though what you may learn of the subject matter is facinating, the novelization approach and contrived dialogue sometimes borders on annoying.

As well, the amount of background information (on Edison, J.P. Morgan, etc.) provided sometimes is more distracting than helpful.

3 out of 5 stars Good For Young Readers.......2000-01-31

I purchased this book wanting a good biographical account of Nikola Tesla. Though it is that, what I didn't realize was that it is really aimed at young readers (ages 9-12). Nothing on the cover or the introduction mentions that fact. The odd book size(wide format), the larger font size and the limited vocabulary give it away as a juvenile selection. I would recommend it highly for that age group. However it was not the adult biography I looking for. I think I will give my copy to my son. I believe he will enjoy it.
