For BIG rooms and budgets only.......2006-06-10

If you are planning to entertain a cast of thousands (or at least a few hundred), own at least ten acres of land, and have unlimited funds (including hefty fees for architects and engineers), then this book offers a few good ideas. Unfortunately, I was looking for something more down to earth, such as ideas for a modest gazebo or shelter that would blend nicely into the back of my modest half acre piece of land - a place for thinking or reading or conversing with a few god friends, a place to escape the rain, or a place for star gazing. This book didn't even come close to my expectations.

Excellent book to improve your photography skills.......2005-06-19

This book is not for absolute beginners. You won't appreciate all the concepts unless you've already been experimenting for a while and are now ready to move to the next level. Digital camera owners take note, every photography concept in this book applies equally to your digital camera so don't feel you need to get a book for digital cameras. For post processing of digital pictures, definetely get another book. This book teaches the basics that every camera operator should know regardless of digital or analog. The book also very clearly explains its concepts with excellent examples of photographs.

Superb, thorough, easy to read, and practical.......2002-11-13

This is one of the best all-rounder books I've read on understanding the basics of photography. It is quite thorough yet takes you step-by-step thru the whole process and also covers digital imaging workflow. Another thing I like is that it covers other formats besides 35mm SLR, like the medium and large cameras, including studio lighting techniques and working in a B&W darkroom. You learn to appreciate where the SLR and point-and-shooters stand in the hierarchy of professional photography, and so are the wiser when choosing the proper setup for your photographic objectives.

It also makes meaningful recommendations when applying certain techniques. For example, in macro photography, it covers the whole gamut from close-up filters to extension tubes, and gives the pro and cons of using each setup. Another example: with filters, it recommends the use of square ones with holders because it is more flexible than screw-on filters (you can adjust the placement of graduating colours) and you only need to purchase a single polariser that can be shared with many lenses of differing thread diameter. Tips like these can be found in every topic.

Of course, it goes beyond the technicalities and discusses ways to improve your artistic abilities and photographic styles. Containing beautiful colour photographs, it emphasises exploration, previsualisation, and simplicity. And lots of practice!

Definitely highly recommended.

All I can say is that this book is exellent. I have been looking and looking for a book that not only tells you how to read to your children but gives you suggestions of good books to read to them. This is that book!!! I got it from my local library but love it so much I am now going to buy it. It is a must read for any mother or new daycare teacher who, like me, had no clue about how to select a good book.

Let's face it: There are many books for babies and children out there. How do I choose the perfect book for my baby? What's the baby going to understand from it? How will the baby react? How can I introduce the book to the baby? I had a lot of questions like these before buying this book and they were all answered. Reading with babies, toddlers, and Twos is a great tool book that reads well, with charts about baby development vs. book choice, many book suggestions categorized and many references as well if you wish to know more. The authors are credible and thanks to them, I do not feel as lost in baby book world. If you want what's best for your child...here's a good start.

Trelease extra light...but very worthwhile for parents with 0-3s.......2007-05-18

Like Mem Fox's Reading Magic: Why Reading Aloud to Our Children Will Change Their Lives Forever, Reading with Babies, Toddlers, and Two's lacks the data and references of Jim Trelease's The Read-Aloud Handbook: Sixth Edition (Read-Aloud Handbook) BUT is a great, friendly introduction to how and why to read aloud to your child and why you should start as young as possible. More importantly, it includes many thematic lists of books for children in the 0 to 3 age range. The lists are what make this book so useful as most booklist books are most solid in the elementary school range, with some (too few) selections for kindergardeners and preschoolers. (The exception to that is Kathleen Odean's Great Books for Babies and Toddlers: More Than 500 Recommended Books for Your Child's First Three Years.) For busy, tired parents, a faster, lighter read than Trelease is welcome though I'd recommend reading Trelease later for more details and data and for his Treasury of read alouds.

As a reading specialist, I am always looking for books to recommend to new mothers. This is a book with a wealth of information for anyone interested in what book should I get for my child, grandchildren, new mother, fathers, etc. Each chapter is well written with good information. At the end of most chapters is a chart containing information about various stages children go through and what parents can expect their child to be doing in response to the title of the chapter. Much research has been done to put this all together. A must for new parents of young children.

Charming and Comprehensive!.......2006-06-28

From beginning to end, this book is chock full of invaluable information about the why's, what's, when's and how's of reading to our children. I honestly can't think of a more important parenting book out there. It just makes so much sense. And although I already do it, it got me excited about reading to my kids again and reminded me why I read to all of my babies in utero. (For fun! Who knew it was so beneficial?) There's just no better way to connect, bond and engage with children. I grew up with this philosophy that books are our friends (my Mother really did tell us that) and it's a joy to learn exactly why reading with our children is so important. I already love giving books as gifts and you can be assured, this book will be hastily added to my baby shower/new baby/1st and 2nd birthday gift list. I can think of no better gift for a parent than the gift of true quality time with their kids. A time to discover, laugh, tickle and snuggle. A time to sing, rhyme, interact and learn. Together. What can be better than that?

Must Have Reference.......2005-04-01

This is a great volume for either the casual or serious student of the War Between the States. I first saw this book at the Jefferson Davis State Park in Fairview, KY. The Park Manager uses it to answer the many and varied questions presented to him on a daily basis. By the way, if you have a chance to visit this park, do so!

Best General Civil War Reference.......2003-04-16

This is the best single-volume general reference work I have used on the American Civil War. It is comprehensive, accurate, balanced, readable, and well-illustrated. The articles are well-written and make for enjoyable browsing. I find it much more useful than Boatner's Civil War Dictionary (which is unbalanced in favor of Union topics and viewpoints).

Excellent introduction to world history for young children.......2001-09-17

This book is well rounded account of world history, but simple enough for a first history introduction. Each section is a two page spread (works well with The Well Trained Mind approach to homeschooling).

For example, the spread on Ancient Egypt has a map of the Nile, a globe showing where Egypt is, pictures of hieroglyphs, info about one of the kings of Egypt, one of the women rulers, lives of children, what the kingdom was like, info about an architect, etc etc. Nice pictures as well....mix of drawings and DK like photographs of historical objects.

The table of contents has: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Toys and Games, The Maya, Medieval Baghdad, The Vikings, The Mongols, China and the Silk Road, The Children's Crusade, Clothes, Renaissance Germany, Benin (Africa), The Incas, Shakespeare's England, Mayflower Pilgrims, The French Revolution, Children at Work, Native Americans, Australia, Industrial England, WWII, From Cradle to Grave, Independence for India, The End of Apartheid, Time Line.

The Shrapnel Pickers by George Schofield is a memoir of the author's experiences as a child in London during the blitz... He does an excellent job of meshing poignant vignettes of his own memories with historical data resulting in a book that reads smoothly as it transitions from emotional description of tragedy to humerous annecdotes and back again. If your looking for a good book that provides a keen insight to wartime Britain at the lowest level, it's certainly worth your time.
