Book Description
For almost ten years, Samuel Mockbee, a recent MacArthur Grant recipient, and his architecture students at Auburn University have been designing and building striking houses and community buildings for impoverished residents of Alabama's Hale County. Using salvaged lumber and bricks, discarded tires, hay and waste cardboard bales, concrete rubble, colored bottles, and old license plates, they create inexpensive buildings that bear the trademark of Mockbee's work, which he describes as "contemporary modernism grounded in Southern culture." In a time of unexampled prosperity, when architectural attention focuses on big, glossy urban projects, the Rural Studio provides an alternative of substance. In addition to being a social welfare venture, the Rural Studio--"Taliesin South" as Mockbee calls it--is also an educational experiment and a prod to the architectural profession to act on its best instincts. In giving students hands-on experience in designing and building something real, it extends their education beyond paper architecture. And in scavenging and reusing a variety of unusual materials, it is a model of sustainable architecture. The work of Rural Studio has struck such a chord-both architecturally and socially--that it has been featured on Oprah, Nightline, and CBS News, as well as in Time and People magazines. The Studio has completed more than a dozen projects, including the Bryant "Hay Bale" House, Harris "Butterfly" House, Yancey Chapel, Akron Chapel, Children's Center, H.E.R.O. Playground, Lewis House, Super Sheds and Pods, Spencer House addition, Farmer's Market, Mason's Bend Community Center, Goat House, and Shannon-Dutley House. These buildings, along with the incredible story of the Rural Studio, the people who live there, and Mockbee and his student architects, are detailed in this colorful book, the first on the subject. "I tell my students, it's got to be warm, dry, and noble"--Samuel Mockbee
Customer Reviews:
Samuel Mockbee is a God..........2007-04-25
After reading this book, I for one would loved to have worked at Rural Studio under him. But the stories and the student work is what completes the book. If every community had a "Rural Studio" of their own no community would have homeless. The pictures are also fantastic, I can't wait to buy the next book.
Architect's Cause Related Marketing?.......2006-07-26
It has been nearly two years since the AutoCAD disappeared from my desktop. When I dropped by a new bookstore near my home, I looked for the architectural section. It is because I felt that I got too far away from architecture, my original work area.
But most architectural books were still in their old-fashion: planning manuals, master architects' theories, works of recent architects and architectural histories. In addition, some others are focused on the architects' political(?) intention. Consequently, I could hardly find a meaning of such publications, meaning that could be understood even by the general public.
This book gave me a meaning in two aspects; an architect should do his social responsibility and an architect should participate actively in communication with the general public like Sang Lim Lee, an architect who translated the book to Korean.
The style of writing is rough as is shown in blogs. But, in other words, it can be understood easily by the general public. We can see Mockbee's work both with a view of respect and a view of jealousy. Nevertheless, I would like to focus on his achievements in communication with regional community and in giving his students significant opportunities. His vision has not degenerated into profit-seeking one and has been sustained by his successors until now.
After reading this book, I got to think that an architect should not be exempt from cause related marketing.
inspiring.......2005-10-03
Maybe the most important architectural idea since the series of pattern language treatises by Christopher Alexander. I think this is a must read for anyone involved with real estate development. Surely a model for New Orleans. I'm planning to take a trip and pay homage. Mr. Mockbee was a genius.
Not To Be Missed.......2005-07-25
The evidence of Mockbee's brilliance and compassion. Proof positive that Mockbee deserved all the awards and acclaim. Great pictures of both the architecture and the house recipients. I love this book and share it often.
Rural Studio and the spirit.......2005-07-18
After my attempt to leave a mark on the Rural Studio, I went back to Auburn to better understand what I had learned. I realized that the Rural Studio had changed my life forever. This book helps explore the methodolgy, theory, and values that flourish in the Rural Studio. This gives an indepth look at the style of Mockbee Coker and some of the better architecture living in the south. An upclose and personal look will only better serve as an example of what architecture can really do, not even to mention the beliefs behind the firm and hearts of two men. The people impacted in their Sambo's strive to rid the world of man's small ambition and the Rural Studio is a product of that belief. I know that the Mockbee Coker style is flourishing today not just in Hale County but in the belief that one can make a difference through helping others and not just talking about, but taking action. For the Spirit of Sambo still lives. In each and every heart that believes in the Rural Studio, in Hale County, and believes that architecture can make a difference. My experience was one of the greatest of my life, and this book helps those maybe understand alittle of what this life is for. I hope that people will implore into the world of Hale County alittle more and help do something in their own lives.

The Colonial Revival House
ASIN: 0813923484 |
Book Description
Although individually and collectively Americans have many histories, the dominant view of our national past focuses on the colonial era. The reasons for this are many and complex, touching on stories of the country's origins and of the founding fathers, the privileged position in history granted the thirteen original colonies, and the ways in which the nation has adjusted to change and modernity. But no matter the cause, the result is obvious: images and forms derived from and related to America's colonial past are the single most popular form of cultural expression.
Often conceived solely in architectural terms, from the red-brick and white-trimmed buildings that recall eighteenth-century James River estates to the clapboarded saltboxes that recall early New England, Colonial Revival is in fact better understood as a process of remembering. In Re-creating the American Past, architectural historian Richard Guy Wilson and a host of other scholars examine how and why Colonial Revival has persisted in modern times. The volume contains essays that explore Colonial Revival expressions in architecture, landscape architecture, historic preservation, decorative arts, and painting and sculpture, as well as the social, intellectual, and cultural background of the phenomena.
Based on the University of Virginia's landmark 2000 conference "The Colonial Revival in America," Re-creating the American Past is a comprehensive and handsome volume that recovers the origins, characteristics, diversity, and significance of the Colonial Revival, situating it within the broader history of American design, culture, and society.

Book Description
The digital photography market has exploded to the point that consumers now buy as many digital cameras as traditional ones. Professional and amateur photographers are busy working out how digital technology can expand the pictures they can take and the way in which they distribute them, as well as how digital effects can dramatically alter shots after the fact. This wide new world of hi-tech photography has recently jump-started a bullish book market. 202 Digital Photography Solutions is for the hobbyist or pro who isn’t necessarily interested in reading a book, but is very interested in getting all they can out of their camera. Using 2-5 page solutions organized by function (composing a shot, digital editing of images) and deals in expert’s tips & tricks for every aspect of digital photography – from purchasing the best equipment for your needs to composing with a digital camera (knowing what kinds of clean-up or enhancement can be later done digitally) to creatively using digital special effects to create highly personalized images.
Customer Reviews:
Great advice!.......2007-09-14
Very useful guidance, hints and tips - really helps me get the most from my camera.
Veeerrrryyyy Basic.......2005-09-23
If you have a camera with any manual settings and know how to use them this book may be too basic for you. As another reviewer mentioned the images are poor quality, which can make it difficult to discern the point being made.
If you're new to photography in general this isn't a bad book. If you're beyond that look elsewhere.
Great information, but marred by problems.......2005-04-26
202 Digital Photography Solutions contains much useful information for anyone wanting to learn more about photography, including topics often barely touched on by similar books, e.g., caring for lenses. Yet the reader is not overwhelmed by useless detail. The information is well chosen and well organized, and the numbered "tips" layout is easy to follow.
There are two problems with this book. One is that the author's somewhat offbeat sense of humor eventually begins to grate on the reader's nerves. Must every pun and play on words be explored? He'll warn about creating "dark shadows" and then add ("like the tv series"). And on and on.
The other problem is a more serious one. The sample photos are all in black and white, and are so badly printed that they detract from the book's effectiveness. There is nothing visual to inspire the reader or amateur photographer. Eventually one may wonder why, if the author knows so much about photography, his photos are so bad?
A Must for Amateurs.......2003-09-16
This book is great an amateur like myself. It gave me the courage to try some new things and made digital photography both easy and fun. I would recommend this book to anyone who is just starting out with a digital camera or someone who wants to learn to get the full potential from their camera.

Customer Reviews:
What would a manga collection be without Shadow Lady?.......2003-04-16
This is the second volume of the popular Shadow Lady series. We were introduced to Bright's old friend Lime, and learned some of the story behind De-mo (Shadow Lady's sidekick) and why he came with the eye shadow. But the Demon World Police are after De-mo for coming to the Human World, and they intend to punish him. Aimi refuses to let them kill her friend, and volunteers to recapture a group of magical demon stones, each with an Arch-Demon sealed inside. The Police agree, and the pair of thieves get to work. But Shadow Lady has a rival now, both in theivery and for Bright's affections. Who will triumph?

Book Description
It's been said Peter Forsberg has the meanness of Messier, the dirtiness of Linseman, the smarts of Gretzky, and the strength of Trottier--and this lively biography, filled with fantastic photos of the superstar in action, proves just how true this statement is. He has won the Calder Memorial Trophy as best rookie of the year and, in 1995-96, had a terrific 116-point season that propelled his team to the Stanley Cup victory. But, perhaps his greatest moment of glory came when he made Swedish hockey history by scoring against Canada in a sudden-death shootout to clinch the Olympic gold medal in Lilliehammer. In honor of that achievement, Sweden issued a postage stamp bearing his image!

A Must-Have For Preschoolers On Up!!.......2001-07-21
We had this set when I was in grade school (early-mid 80's). We listened to the tapes so often I'm surprised they didn't wear out! My younger brother rested to them every afternoon when he gave up his nap. Only a couple of the books have survived, but I can't wait for my little ones to enjoy the series! Perfect for the car or bedroom, the book on tape format also encourages early reading skills. One of the best ways for your child to learn your favorite Bible stories!!

"The Emergence of Morality in Young Children is one of very few scholarly books concerning the development of moral tendencies in the early years. In its pages, a diverse group of eminent social and behavioral scientists address this fascinating topic and struggle with issues of inquiry that have persistently plagued this field."—Nancy Eisenberg, Harvard Educational Review
"This is a welcome and immensely provocative book. For those of us who favor ethical theorizing done in close proximity to psychology and anthropology, it provides new and illuminating theory and research relevant to perennial debates about the origins of moral sense, its psychological organization, and the objectivity and unity of the moral."—Owen Flanagan, Ethics

Book Description
"Leave No Man Behind" is the powerful story of Garnett "Bill" Bell's quest, at great personal cost, to find and bring home the POWs and MIAs of the Vietnam War. With his encyclopedic knowledge of the Vietnamese Communists and his fluency in various regional dialects, he penetrated the system the Communists had created to exploit American POWs for diplomatic concessions, or their remains and personnal effects for financial rewards. In this book, Bell shares his perspective as a witness to history as it unfolded.
Customer Reviews:
Americans in Vietnam.......2007-02-08
It was fascinating to read and learn from this author, who is multi-lingual and deeply immersed in Vietnamese culture and history, as
well as American military experience. While the writing was not always as interesting as the subject matter, this book really brought home the passion and commitment of the author in finding out what happened to the many missing soldiers from the Vietnam War.
Bill Bell has a grip on the truth.......2006-01-30
Leave No Man Behind had me griting me teeth and cussing. The stonewall that Bill Bell runs into time after time, yet keeps getting up for more is remakable. I've always knew the MIA / POW issue hasn't been dealth with directly and honorably by the ones having the power to do so. Bill Bell breaks it down in an intelligent way for the rest of us, he's been there, done that. From the Vietnamese using our missing troops to ferther their agenda and look like the innocent, to our own people covering their ass with a smile, Leave No Man Behind connects the dots for me and gives hope that all the soldiers lost in Viet Nam will be found.
The Author Is A Hero!.......2004-12-19
"Leave No Man Behind" is the true guidepost to the painful saga of resolving the search for POWs and MIAs in Indochina. It should be required for anyone interested in the details and history of the quest. The author, a genuine hero, spent most of 20 years, 1973-1993, interviewing refugees, battling U.S. bureaucrats (military and civilian) and wrestling with Communist officials in Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. He was also this country's senior field investigator, searching remote crash and burial sites for remains of U.S. military. Along the way he was actively involved in the final evacuation from Saigon in 1975. He learned several distinct Vietnamese dialects, the better to communicate/negotiate with the adversary. Few Americans would be that conscientious. Those of us who have followed and supported the search for POWs/MIAs all these years know how venally, dishonestly and even cruelly the Vietnamese have acted. They deny storing remains and then repatriate bodies with obvious evidence of chemical storage. They allow us to "investigate" crash sites that have been clearly sanitized in advance. Bodies are dug up, moved and reinterred. After payment of search fees, permits, excavation fees and other "costs", remains are found! And so it goes, on and on, year after frustrating year. But when Vietnamese act that way, they are being themselves! How can we explain or describe American officials, civilian and military, who descend to the same level? Mr.Bell makes it perfectly clear that a POW assignment was all too often a just soft "REMF" job. These guys did not want too many POWs being repatriated all at once. How would that look? The longer the searches went on, the longer the comfortable gigs. In the words of a previous reviewer, the whole deal was nothing more than a meal ticket. This reviewer has always suspected that we were own worst enemy and the list of "usual suspects" is long and sickening. There is no doubt in this quarter that these quislings would never want any American MIA found alive. They would be too frightened to explain the reappearance! One specific suspect on the list of lowlife Americans is President Carter, who tried very hard to underfund the original search efforts and nip them in the very bud. Another is not President Clinton but John Kerry. He was so in love with normalizing relations with North Vietnam that his so-called Senate Select Committee swept whitewashed the entire POW/MIA effort. All so his family owned company received exclusive American rights to real estate deals in North Vietnam. How Mr. Bell kept his calm and perspective dealing with so man cowardly and selfish Americans is a mystery. This review could continue at great length, but I'm sure my amazon friends have the picture clearly. In a review of Bernard Fall's "Street Without Joy", this observer closed by writing that the author would be "a great guy to have a few beers with". I feel the same about Mr. Bell except that he would not have to pay for a round. The author is a true American hero. I'll conclude this review by restating that "Leave No Man Behind" is required reading for anyone concerned with the resolution of the 1,845 men still missing in Indochina.
A cause, a vocation, a career?.......2004-07-03
Whether or not a reader has the same take on the history of the POW-MIA issue as Bill Bell, most will be able to acknowledge that he took the issue to heart in a very active way. His commitment to the study of the languages of the region set him head and shoulders above the vast majority of NCOs and certainly all of the officers who were assigned to work the issue, and those linguistic skills for the most part served him very very well. Unfortunately, by the time Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia began to open up and the many years of almost hopeless interviews in refugee camps came to an end, the "issue" had devolved into a series of highly-publicized scams and silly bureaucratic turf struggles between bureaucracies with no missions, and inevitably was exploited by the odd politician or three. We ended up not serving the missing or their families as well as the naive among us would have expected. What was once a sacred cause degenerated into a comfortable meal ticket for many of those "involved," but in spite of all that, Bill often took stances which he knew would bring him his fair share of abuse. If anyone made an honest effort for an extended period of years, Bill did. Those that have hung on for decades sitting idle at the trough have much to answer for. Bill Bell was active in the pursuit of his life-defining mission, and that alone makes his writing worth our time and our respect.
