Book Description

Beauty is big business worldwide. This is most evident by noting the amazing transformation of what was once the corner "beauty shop" into the amazing spaces that are now called salons and day spas and are being designed by some of the world's hottest designers and architects. Providing a serene atmosphere that pampers and relaxes is as important for success as the products and services these retreats offer. Clients' demands are not just to look beautiful when they leave but also to feel beautiful when they are there. The salons and spas that can provide this perceived sense of beauty prove to be the most successful. These pages provide an inside look at the most elegant and appealing spas to the hippest beauty shops.

These new shops represent the high-end of interior design and architecture and the atmosphere is as important as the service. Spas and Salons features the design details of the best and newest beauty shops and spas on the block and uncovers, through interviews with the designers, what makes them so appealing, memorable, and desirable.

    Book Description

With 10 Hugos as Best Professional Artist and countless other awards, Kelly Freas is the most popular and prolific science fiction artist today. His gritty, realistic work in the 1950s set a new agenda for magazine and book covers--which artists follow still. But, his painting also can reveal a relaxed humor, with their cheeky scoundrels and personable aliens. More than 24 publications featured his work, including Analog, Astounding Science Fiction, and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. He's illustrated stories by some of the greatest sci-fi writers--Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke, e.g.--as well as record and CD art. He also did the original, definitive 3-D bust of Alfred E. Neumann, Mad magazine's gap-toothed mascot. A new volume of Freas's art is always something to celebrate, and this one, containing the all the best of his work from 1984 to the present, is no exception.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!!!.......2006-10-25

Freas was one of science fiction's greatest artists. His protrayals of intergalactic worlds and even his cartoony creations in MAD were amazing. I had the grand oppurtunity of reading this book some years ago and was saddened to hear that it is now out of print. That last loser who reviewed this gave a porn movie a good review. Ignore him and see what true art is.

    1 out of 5 stars BAADDDDD!!!.......2006-09-28

Freas' paintings basically are badly painted cartoons that occassionaly look like something more realistic on accident. His text is head-ache inducing as he covers everything from the history of paint to selling books with attractive covers-something he has no right discussing given his poor artwork. He also rants about art critics and buyers, again, something a sub-par illustrator has no business talking about, and most annoyingly of all, how great he thinks he is. I've never read an autobiography that was this narcissistic! The only good thing about this book is that it smells nice!!

5 out of 5 stars Superb guide for beginner/intermediate photographer.......2005-10-30

Despite that I'm losing a fair chunk of change on Kodak in the stock market, and that this book touts Kodak film, it remains one of the BEST all-time books for beginner/intermediate photographers!

This gem of a book explains in easy language all the basics one needs to learn - exposure (shutter speed, f-stops, ISO), lenses, composition, filters, flash and taking pictures in different lighting situations (daylight, backlight, sidelight etc.)

Although some may think this book is "dated" because it does not address the digital realm, it will remain a classic for teaching the basic, unchanging principles of photography.

      Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST first book on photography.......2003-09-03

Kodak has published little books on various aspects of photography for fifty years. I learned the basics of composition, depth of field, and most other fundamentals from those little books. This bigger book combines all those little books into a real introduction to photography. Lots of good photo examples (with Kodak film type and lens information, so that you know how the photo was created.) accompany an easy-to-understand text on the how and why of composition, exposure, lenses, flash, and so on.

If you just bought a new 35mm or high-end digital camera, then read your camera manual and this book, both cover to cover, and that's all you'll need for the first year or 2,400 pictures, whichever comes first!

1 out of 5 stars Virtually useless book.......2003-08-05

This book is so generic in its advice that it is all but useless. It tries to be all things to all cameras, and therefore says nothing specific about anything. Add to this the way it tries to tout Kodak film, and you realize Kodak should be paying people to read this book. But they still wouldn't know how to work their cameras.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2003-03-06

I purchased the Kodak Guide To 35mm Photography for a friend, and being a
professional photographer, I thought that the National Geographic Photography Field
Guide: Secrets to Making Great Pictures would be a perfect source of advanced
knowledge for me...but I was wrong. The National Geographic book is good, but the
Kodak Guide is much better. Both books start with the basics, but Kodak fills its book
with much more information and far more (and usually better) photographs. This is a

great book for amateurs and professionals alike. I've just sent the NG book back, and I'll soon order the Kodak Guide for myself!

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and intermediate photographers!.......2003-01-29

If you are a beginner or intermediate photographer, this book will tell you what you need to know to get the results you want in your photography. It covers the topics of film, exposure, and flash photography, from the basics to intermediate technique. It also has chapters that give advice on specific types of photography: action, existing-light, and close-up. There are also chapters on lenses and filters and a short chapter on digital manipulation. Most of the information in this book would be appropriate for digital as well as film photography. If you just bought your first SLR, or if you would like to better understand what your camera can do, this is the perfect book for you. It also makes a great gift for the young or relatively inexperienced photographer. Advanced amateurs may find it useful as a refresher or reference to keep for those occasions when you forget some technique that you haven't used in a while. But the book's intended audience is novice to intermediate photographers, and it does a very good job of addressing the needs of those photographers.

The world no longer holds any mysteries for Simon Archard, the greatest detective of his age. The stupidity of the common criminal, the ease with which he's caught, the paltry stakes of the game - all of it has pushed Archard to the verge of retirement. Then a mysterious new menace takes the stage, a hideous evil playing for very high stakes indeed. Aided by his beautiful and charming assistant, Emma Bishop, Archard embarks on the case of his career. Ruse is an ongoing duel of warring masterminds held under the cold glow of gaslights. Panoramic artwork recalls Victorian England in painstaking detail, right down to the rain-pooled cobblestone streets. This steampunk mystery series pits logic against magic with wit and brio. A sure hit for mystery fans.

5 out of 5 stars Instantly draws you in.......2005-08-16

I saw this title in a small bookshop and was instantly drawn to the illustrations. They are so clean and the lines are beautiful. Even if you know nothing about art you will appericiate these illustratons. I basically bought the book on the ilustrations and that it was a mystery. I love the story line. Emma is,of course,my favorite character. She's witty and bright and is always trying to show Simon that is a worthy PARTNER! Even though Simon still sees her as a n assistant she struggles on and gives 110 percent. You will love reading the story and the art will continualy entertain you.

4 out of 5 stars High-quality writing, but too scatter-shot.......2005-03-25

This volume is a compilation of the first six issues of a comic from the highly-regarded Waid, who has done a ton of stuff for Marvel. The setting is the city of Partington in the world of Arcadia, which strongly resembles late-Victorian London -- with the addition of live gargoyles and a touch of the supernatural. The story revolves around Simon Archard, a not very personable Holmesian sort of detective who seldom finds a challenge in the crimes and puzzles he investigates. His assistant (or junior partner, depending on who you ask) is Emma Bishop -- who is not the retiring Doctor Watson sort and is nearly as quick-witted as Simon, and who has (unbeknownst to him) the ability to freeze time. Emma don't get no respect, though. And there seems to be some kind of cosmic game or field study, or something, going on with her but, unfortunately, it's never explained. Not in this volume, anyway. Into the picture comes the mysterious and dangerous foreign baroness, Melinda Cross, with plans to control (through drugs) the city's social and political elite, and Simon and Emma have to find out what's going on and how to stop it. The fifth chapter has Simon mostly off somewhere on his own (at Reichenbach Falls, maybe?), leaving Emma to solve a streetwalker-murder case. And the sixth and last chapter goes off in an entirely different direction, bringing in Simon's earlier partner, presumed dead, but actually just pathological. The book ends there, just as the new story arc is getting started, which is annoying (they should have restricted this volume to only the first five issues), but the byplay between Simon and Emma is enjoyable, the plotting is over the top in true Victorian fashion, and the realistic art style is terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Very high quality stuff.......2004-04-23

This was the very first graphic novel I picked up, and it's the one I compare every other series to. A masterfully done, totally enveloping work, "Ruse" takes you in and refuses to let you go, even after the last page. I have to confess that I've become a rabid fan and I'm counting the days until the next collection comes out.

The story, in brief: Emma Bishop is the beautiful, intelligent assistant to Simon Archard, the greatest detective of the age. It turns out that Partington, the ever-so-slightly fantastic victorian town in which they live, is full of mysteries to be solved. The major one in this collection is the strange Baroness Miranda Cross who, along with Emma, posesses a strange power to stop time. Who is Miranda Cross? Why is she trying to control the higher-ups of Partington? The answer remains a mystery until the end, and even then the answer is not really known.

The art in "Ruse" is very high quality and goes along with the crisp dialogue. Both manage very well to keep everyone in character, something that other Crossgen books, such as "Sojourn" don't quite succeed at. We sympathize with Emma through all her attempts to do the right thing, though she's never quite able to meet the standard of her employer. Simon, though terribly arrogant, is also a sympathetic character, who the reader learns to love. The bad guys are without a doubt bad. Miranda Cross is a delightfully conniving villainess who never wavers from her quest to screw things up in Partington.

All in all, "Ruse" is certainly worth a read. My advice is that you keep the second volume close at hand, because you won't want to wait before reading it.

5 out of 5 stars An Original On Par With Stan Lee.......2004-03-17

As I read this book, I kept thinking "this is the best I've seen since Stan Lee". But this isn't a "super-hero" book, it's very unique. Nevertheless, this is comic book storytelling at its finest. The artwork is absolutely magnificent, the dialogue is intelligent and is superbly woven into the art with a skill I haven't seen since the 1960's Marvel line, but it's done with a very modern production quality worthy of the 21st century, with very high gloss paper and color work that is magnificent.

The "Ruse" series takes place in a fictional town that's a Victorian England or perhaps America, but with an ever-so-slight suggestion of fantasy - gargoyles fly like bats, for example. The premise: Emma Bishop is the sexy and smart - but still green - assistant to the brilliant but distant Simon Archard, a sort of dashing and very serious Sherlock Holmes type. As much as Archard's brilliance is widely respected, nobody but Emma knows why he often escapes harm's way, not even Archard ... This book is the republished edition of the first 6 comic books from "Ruse", a monthly comic series published by the new company "CrossGen". "Ruse" lasted about 25 or 30 issues, when the storyline concluded, and the characters were taken into other books.

Since this book is the reprint of Ruse issues 1 through 6, it contains plots that resolve, but subplots that continue into issues 7 and beyond - which are also reprinted in books like this one. This particular book, "Enter the Detective", is the starting point, and comes in two different editions. Both are bound paperback, graphic novel style. One is the "traveler edition", which is a smaller version - meant for travelling, I guess - but because this artwork is so absolutely beautiful, I found myself wanting the other edition, which reprints the comics in their original larger size.

As a collector of comics from the early days of Spider-Man, and a fan of the old artwork of the early Marvel Conan the Barbarian, I have to say - this is THE FIRST production I've appreciated since those days (other than Alex Ross' work). And it's brilliant without being foul - so many of the new comics are filled with R-rated material or lower. I found myself so caught up on the story and the art with this that it wasn't until much later that I realized - this is actually fine for kids. (Strange that you have to consider that with comics, but that's the way it is nowadays.) Sexy but not raunchy, intelligent and engaging, dramatic yet credible story lines, this has it all. Mark Waid wrote all 6 issues. Butch Guice was the artist for issues 1 through 5, and Jeff Johnson was the artist for issue 6. Johnson's work is not QUITE as good, but still well done.

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing Victorianesque Series.......2003-10-10

I'm not much of a comics reader in general, but this collection of the first six issues of the "Ruse" series caught my eye. The setting is Partington, the capital city of a place very much resembling gaslight Victorian England. The hero is super-genius detective Simon Archard and his stubborn blonde assistant, Emma. Archard is kind of a Sherlock Holmes character, capable of stunning feats of deduction-but with the body and dexterity of an athlete. Emma is a smart, tough, witty, and beautiful, but continually frustrated by Simon's condescension to her. She also possesses the magical ability to stop time, although for reasons that remain murky, she's not allowed to use it. The two interact in a remarkably witty nonstop banter, much in style of the screwball comedy films of the '40s, with Simon inevitably getting the last word in.

Their adventures in this book begin with a relatively simple murder investigation, which ties into a drug-smuggling operation masterminded by a beautiful foreign baroness. The stakes mount and mount over the first four chapters as the baroness brings the city's most influential citizens under her power and Simon is framed and forced into hiding. The fifth chapter finds Emma alone to confront a series of grisly prostitute slayings (a la Jack the Ripper), and to contemplate Simon's disappearance. The last story introduces the Simon's enigmatic archnemesis, in a teaser to set up the next big storyline.

The artwork is unbelievably rich and detailed-every panel is excellent, and many times unusual perspectives are given to the most mundane scene to make it interesting. The panel flow can be a bit confusing at times (a couple times I had tostop and figure out if I was supposed to read across the both pages, or continue down the left-hand page), but it's a small price to pay for the inventive paneling. The level of detail on clothing, architecture, and interiors is just amazing, and the colors work perfectly in conjunction. My only quibble is that the last chapter uses different artists and the look is completely different, much thicker and simpler lines, and much more drab coloring. Overall, however, it's great artwork with a compelling storyline and well worth checking out.

"Those who do not know the conditions of mountains and forests, hazardous defiles, marshes and swamps, cannot conduct the march of an army."

So wrote Sun Tzu in his classic treatise The Art of War. This stimulating book takes Sun Tzu's advice and examines what many others on military history ignore: the effect the environment (physical terrain, weather, vegetation, etc.) has on battle. Each chapter focuses on a different environmental problem, and reveals the various ways in which it can influence a battle's outcome. A section on storms, for instance, shows how the elements randomize success: in the 12th century, a typhoon ruined Kublai Khan's attempted invasion of Japan, yet relatively calm seas helped assure the Allied victory on D-day hundreds of years later. Another chapter compares and contrasts the dense forests of the Battle of the Wilderness during the Civil War with the intractable jungles of Vietnam. One lesson this book teaches is that bad weather usually favors defenders: the Germans used fog and precipitation to their advantage during the Battle of the Bulge, as did the Viet Cong during the siege of Khe Sanh. The authors draw a few predictable conclusions--planning, logistics, leadership, and tactics are all critical, they say--but on the whole they provide a fascinating look at how wind, clouds, waves, rain, snow, mud, sand, heat, hills, mountains, and islands (to name a few factors) affect war. --John J. Miller

              Book Description

Throughout history, from Kublai Khan's attempted invasions of Japan to Rommel's desert warfare, military operations have succeeded or failed on the ability of commanders to incorporate environmental conditions into their tactics. In Battling the Elements, geographer Harold A. Winters and former U.S. Army officers Gerald E. Galloway Jr., William J. Reynolds, and David W. Rhyne, examine the connections between major battles in world history and their geographic components, revealing what role factors such as weather, climate, terrain, soil, and vegetation have played in combat. Each chapter offers a detailed and engaging explanation of a specific environmental factor and then looks at several battles that highlight its effects on military operations. As this cogent analysis of geography and war makes clear, those who know more about the shape, nature, and variability of battleground conditions will always have a better understanding of the nature of combat and at least one significant advantage over a less knowledgeable enemy.

              4 out of 5 stars Good Textbook.......2007-05-30

This book is a great textbook. It should be required reading for any serious student of military history or any military officer at the rank of Major or above. The authors do a great job of mixing the science of geography and historical example to illustrate their point. First in each chapter on a certain geographical element the authors do a good job educating the reader on the scientific description of that type of geography or event like the weather. Then they use select historical examples to show how the type of geography impacted on the military event.

The authors do show through their example in weather the hidden hand of God. It is amazing how on certain events the weather parted just in time for one side to accomplish their goal. The example the author used was Dunkirk. The weather parted at the critical couple of days against the norm patterns for that time of the year to allow for the British to evacuate their personnel from France.

The book is documented extremely well. However I don't think the average reader will enjoy the book. The degree of detail will exceed what the average person would enjoy. However I know of nothing better that shows how terrain does influence a battle.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Case Studies.......2001-02-15

As one might surmise from the title, the twelve chapters and twenty-five case studies in this books all examine the role and importance of weather and terrain in warfare. Most of the chapters are fairly straightforward in what they cover: storms, wet, fog and clouds, seasonal change, forest and jungle, river crossings, peninsulas and coasts, islands, heat and humidity and the desert. These are somewhat less operate independently of each other and occasionally overlap. Each chapter begins with an overview on the science (ie. geography or meteorology) of the chapter's topic, for example, how and why fog forms, before proceeding into two case studies drawn from military history. The non-scientifically inclined can skip these introductory sections to the chapters and not miss anything. Two more broad chapters cover "terrains and corridors" and how "glaciers shape the land." and are really don't work as well as the other ten. These two subjects are broad and more or less self-evident, making them noticeably weaker than the rest of the book. The case studies are largely drawn from modern Western military history. Eleven of the case studies are from World War II, three from World War I, three from the U.S. Civil War, and three from Vietnam, one from Korea, one from the Sinai/Suez War, one from the Napoleonic era, one from the Mongol invasions of Japan, and one on invading Russia that spans several episodes. The overall lessons are fairly predictable: military planning and logistics must account for weather and terrain, both on a strategic and tactical level. One would expect the explosion in computer weather modeling and terrain mapping in recent years would alleviate many of the problems described in the book, and it would have been nice to have a chapter at the end discussing this. Still, it makes for a fascinating mix of military history and geography. The maps and diagrams are top-notch and the design of the book makes it a pleasure to read.

5 out of 5 stars A perfect marriage of geography and military stratagy........1999-04-23

Is this a book on geography for a military strategist or a study of military geography for a general geographer? I'm inclined to say it is both.

The words, "...couldn't put it down ...", may be overworked but how often can they be applied to what is, basically, a text book?

The book is divided into 12 chapters, each based on an element of physical geography (terrain, weather, climate, sea coasts, etc.) Each chapter gives a very general background on the geographic element (all very much in non-geographer language) and then gives the chronology of two or three battles showing how the physical feature shaped the battle's outcome. The range of battles go from Kubla Khan's 1274 attack on Japan to Khe Sanh, Viet Nam in 1968. They stretch the globe from Iwo Jima in the Pacific to Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. It is a delightful combination of geography and military strategy.

As I am writing this, the world is discussing the possible intervention of ground troops in Kosovo. I hope the generals making the decisions have a sound geographic background. (Maybe Amazon.Com will send the Pentagon a few copies of this outstandingly readable work.)

Praise for The Fall of Napoleon

"A well-researched and original history. . . . Hamilton-Williams tells a stirring story, revealing much new material." —Kirkus Reviews

"[Hamilton-Williams] is a fine writer and a ferocious logician. He has written a fascinating, if controversial, book." —Washington Times

"A dedicated Bonapartist, British historian Hamilton-Williams spares no one in exposing the double and triple crosses perpetrated." —Library Journal

In The Fall of Napoleon, David Hamilton-Williams offers a fresh and striking new assessment of the cause and effects of the Emperor's decline. Using substantial new research, the acclaimed author calls into question many of the views established in Napoleonic literature to date. Filled with fascinating details on the diplomatic intrigues linking Britain, Austria, Russia, and Prussia in the quest for Napoleon's demise, this riveting account reveals surprising new information on previously unknown secret terrorist organizations, assassination attempts, and the unbridled political duplicity that led to the French ruler's fall from power.

1 out of 5 stars His Introduction Tells It All.......2003-01-29

After reading the various pros and cons of this book, I thought I would take it for a spin from my local library. Unfortunately, for the author, he runs off the road in the first two pages. In this short space, he talks about how terrible it was that when Napoleon fell from power the great personal freedom(???) that the French people had was lost, onerous reparations that France had to pay, and how great social institutions were dismantled. Those three statements alone are enough to show that this author should be stopped for WWI (Writing While Intoxicated). As an example of the great personal freedom that the French people had he mentions that people were able to rise due to merit. Hmmm, I guess being a relative of Napoleon is meritous since that's all it took to become the king of Spain - even when Joseph didn't want to be the king of Spain. Titles and estates were given hither and yon simply for being a good general in the rape and pillage of innocent countries. Maybe the author meant free speech, but no there was none. Newspapers were closed. A printer *in another country* was kidnapped to France and executed for having the audacity of printing a anti-Napoleon pamphlet. Napoleon was the sole arbiter of plays, music, newspapers, etc.
The state was everything... the individual, nothing. Elections were fixed, his assistants virtual slaves. His secretary of ten years asked to leave due to health problems. His house was stripped, his reputation ruined, his ability to earn a living destroyed simpley because he wished to leave a job. Maybe he meant freedom of property or commerce. Confiscatory taxes were used to supply the army. If taxes didn't cover it, then you would supply a loan at the point of sword. If you asked for repayment... another sword point would meet you. After the taxes, the loans, and simple confiscation they would come and take what they needed including your son. In Poland, Napoleon got a mistress by threatening the countries nobles. Even if you weren't French, you could conscripted in to their army. There was no freedom of commerce. If you traded with England for anything, anywhere in the world, you were an enemy. Napoleon was genius, but a heartless, flawed, faithless and incredibly malicious and cruel genius.

1 out of 5 stars Mr Attridge check the sources.......2002-12-21

"Baronet" Hamilton-Williams (he also made up a title to go with his sources) needs to be taken with a big grain of salt. I sincerely recommend that you actually check his sources...yes his "conclusions" run counter to a lot of the opinions that currently exist..it's just too bad he has no facts to support any of his "conclusions".

He even started signing his letters to me with "of that Ilk" below his name. As as Fellow of the International Napoleonic Society and the person who hosted the Debate on CNN on the poisoning of Napoleon, I can assure that "Baronet" Hamilton-Willimas "of that Ilk" has no credibility amongst scholars in the time period.

George Nafziger has written some very detailed reviews of his work in which he goes through the source material, source by source...literally there is virtually nothing that is factual...when he cites carton number xxx at the archives national and then you go and look at the carton cited...there is nothing in the carton even on the same subject that he is using it as his source...he is absolutely incredible.

He even used a letter which purported to be authored by David Chandler to write some introductions to some computer games on the Napoleonic Wars...

He has since changed his name and is using just Williams and has authored some fictitous stuff on Nelson.

Unfortunately the way the world works today publishers just run spell checkers on books...they don't check the facts...one recent book on Napoleon had more than 400 factual errors and was chosen by History Book of the Month as a featured selection.

The Late Col.John Elting (Swords Around a Throne) wrote a review of that book which I paraphrase..."the index, helpful for once list both dates Josephine died, unfortunately, both are wrong..."

5 out of 5 stars Redemption From The British Isles.......2002-05-27

I have been studying the Napoleonic era for many years and have built up quite a library as a result. If I were obliged, however, to retain only one of them, it would be this one. The volume is so well-written and researched that one is surprised that history can be so riveting. Hamilton-Williams has indeed made the dry bones live. His other volume, Waterloo-The Great Battle Reappraised, is just as brilliant and profound. No one who reads these books will be disappointed.

                  4 out of 5 stars Challenging.......2001-12-09

Hamilton-Williams places an entire new slant on the subject of Naploeons fall and uses his many sources well ( and provides warnings when the sources are not trustworthy ) most of his conclusions are viable on the evidence provided and well written. Half his problem are that a large amount of his conclusions destroy the assumptions that a large portion of Napoleonic historians make and like to continue to make and hence the backlash against him. His view of Napoleon essentially brought down from within is one that is gaining more and more acceptance and anyone who is prepared to cope with his partisan approach to the issue will enjoy and learn from this book.

With regards to emphasis the book leans heavily on the undercurrents, political manouverings of this period and thus provides a fresh look on an overwritten subject. Excellant

                  1 out of 5 stars Original....you betcha.......2000-03-28

This authors sources are so original he wrote them himself...If you try and verify any of the source material for anything other than "common knowledge" you will find that that those cited have no bearing on the subject at hand...This goes beyond sloppy scholorship.... It gets one star because I cant give it a zero...buy it only if you need firewood
