A Look at the Life of Andy Warhol.......2004-03-28
Bockris begins the book in the humble begins of the Warhola family. Andy is an almost insignificant little child who is often sick and mocked bt his peers. As a result, he becomes very attached to his mother. This bond lasts well into his life.
Andy Warhol was actually kicked out of art school for his poor performance before enrolling again after summer school. His art took time to catch on. His paintings, as diverse as they are in style and subject, gained him his fame. On the other hand, the films he produced were largely unsuccessful. While the stories behind his work seem concise, Bockris does an excellent job of recounting Warhol's career.
Bockris does an admirable job of capturing the social changes and scandals that affect Andy Warhol's life. Warhol's faint homosexuality is documented. While not being an overly sexual person, Warhol's affects on pop culture went so far to make homosexuality trendy around 1972. The day Andy Warhol was shot is discussed with photographs. The events of this day are told in a straight forward nature. Warhol's tragic death is also told through the sources at the hospital and the people closest to Andy.
The book is a bargain as the price it sells. For those wanting to learn more about this legendary artist, this book is ideal.
A Very Revealing Character Study!.......1999-03-26
Being a person who met both Warhol and Solonis (who shot Andy Warhol), the book was probably more interesting to me than most people. The book goes into detail about how, the public was being mislead by Warhol's veneer of simplicity in revealing how sensitive he actually was.
It explains about how Andy manipulated people and was as generous as he was mean. I found this to be true in my own personal experience, knowing Warhol. He was very defensive, and could be quite mean, when offended.
The book also gives valuable insight in how Andy Warhol manipulated people. It was interesting knowing how he could beg and whine when he didn't get his way, and he didn't give up after many misfortunes.

Adrianople AD 378: The Goths crush Rome's legions (Campaign)
Simon Macdowall Manufacturer: Osprey Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1841761478 Release Date: 2001-04-25 |
Book Description
’Never, except in the battle of Cannae, had there been so destructive a slaughter recorded in our annals.’ Thus the Roman historian Ammianus Marcellinus recorded the battle of Adrianople, which spelled the beginning of the end of the Roman Empire. Such a crushing Roman defeat by Gothic cavalry proved to the Empire, as well as to the Goths themselves, that the migratory barbarians were a force to be reckoned with. This book tells the story of the misguided Roman plans and the surprise attack of Gothic cavalry, and puts forward the most recent theories as to the true location of the battlefield.Customer Reviews:
A Good Summary of Modern Analysis of this Battle.......2001-11-25
This battle has been the subject of several myths in military history and it is good to see MacDowell reject the outdated idea that the Goths won through the use of huge numbers of heavy cavalry - following Burns' persuasive analysis which shows this was substantially an infantry vs infantry affair. His analysis of the numbers of troops involved is also well supported by recent historical analysis. Careful examination of the *Notitia* , the events leading up to the battle and the units involved makes it clear that Valens is unlikely to have had more than 20,000 or so troops in the field that day. As for the old fashioned Germanicist myth that Fritigern commanded a vast force of 100-200,000 warriors - that nonsense was consigned to the rubbish bin over a century ago. Close reading of the accounts of the Thracian campaign, analysis of the forage and food supply available and Ammianus' account of Fritigern's repeated attempts to negotiate a way out all make it clear that he had little or no numerical superiority and that the two forces were quite closely matched in numbers.
What won Fritgern the victory was a combination of luck and good generalship in the face of Valens' overconfidence and incompetence.
While images of vast numbers of howling wolfskin-clad savages over-running the outdated legions of a declining Empire may be stirring and romantic, this battle was more like a clash between an elite, professional army against a force of similarly armed, less disciplined but quite desperate rebel refugees. The reason Ammianus declares it to have been the greatest defeat since Cannae lies in the fact that by the end of the day the Emperor was dead, a huge number of his elite officers had also been killed and three quarters of the Eastern Praesental Army - the best troops in the Empire - had been wiped out. It was not simply the numbers of dead which made this a crushing defeat, though they were substantial, but the nature of the troops defeated, the fact that the Goths were not even contained for several more years (they were never fully defeated and remained within the Empire) and the psychological impact of the defeat, particularly in the light of the later effects these Goths were to have under Alaric.
Like all books in this brief format, this one has its limitations, but it is a useful addition to Osprey's range and goes some way towards making up-to-date analysis of this battle easily available to the popular reader.
Not bad for an Osprey Book.......2001-10-29
A Good Summary, but Limited by Sources.......2001-05-17
Simon Macdowall, a retired British army officer, uses his recent military experience in the Balkans as a tool to help strip away some of the ambiguity from the Battle of Adrianople. Based upon good terrain analysis, he makes a convincing case for locating the battlefield eight miles north of Adrianople. However the author is not satisfied with the standard estimates of 40-60,000 Romans fighting 100,000 or more Goths. Using the Notitia Dignitatum, a 4th Century Roman text on the Roman military, Macdowall extrapolates a possible Roman and Goth order of battle that is far smaller than standard accounts. In the author's opinion, the Romans had only about 15,000 troops and the Goths had perhaps 20,000 men. This is not very plausible. As even Ammianus' noted, the Roman defeat at Adrianople was the worst defeat since Cannae in 216 BC. It is hard to see how the loss of only 10,000 troops as argued by Macdowall could be a catastrophe that threatened the stability of the empire. The standard accounts, which estimate Roman losses of 20-40,000 dead, are far more in line with the magnitude of this disaster.
In the aftermath, the author asks, "how was it that the best organized, equipped and disciplined army in the world could have been so thoroughly defeated by what amounted to an ad hoc force of refugees and deserters?" Macdowall's response to his own question is twofold. First, the overstretched empire could not muster sufficient quality troops to deal with multiple threats in a timely manner. Second, Roman arrogance (common in situations where professional soldiers confront irregulars) caused them to underestimate their enemies and they offered battle without adequate reconnaissance. Emperor Valens, the Roman commander, accepted battle in a very sloppy, ill-planned manner and the result was disaster. In short order, the Roman cavalry was routed off the battlefield and the unsupported infantry was massacred.
Organizationally, this volume begins with a 6-page introduction, followed by an excellent 17-page section on the opposing armies and 6 more pages on opposing leaders and plans. Osprey seems to have rectified some of the shortcomings in these vital introductory sections from previous volumes. Unfortunately, the actual battle narrative is only 3 pages in length, which seems overly short. Granted the amount of detailed information is sparse, but the author could have done more than just quote chunks of Ammianus' description of the battle. For example, since the Roman infantry was caught while deploying from column to line formation, a diagram and discussion of this key moment might have been useful. Although there is a 7-page section on the aftermath and consequences, it says little about the 1/3rd of the Roman army that survived the battle. The artwork in this volume is of mixed quality; two of the four battle scenes are rather shabby and do not relate to the battle. A plate depicting the initial cavalry clash would have been more appropriate than a "non-combat" scene of migrating Goths. The 2-D maps are very good in supporting the text, but there are only two of the 3-D "Bird's Eye View" maps instead of the normal three. As for the illustrations, most are rather repetitive (e.g. too many illustrations of Roman shield designs) or not germane to the Battle of Adrianople. In future, Osprey should use more relevant illustrations from its "Men-At-Arms" and "Warrior" scenes to round-out volumes (as it used to do earlier in the Campaign series), instead of over-using photos of random antiquarian bric-a-brac.

European Conquest of Africa........2006-05-25
Colonial Warfare in Africa.......2002-04-06
Vandervort describes how relations between black Africans and Europeans were carried on largely at arm's length until the 1850's. He informs us that the interior of Africa was still mainly in the hands of the African peoples, whose hostility, combined with rigors of tropical diseases, kept European penetration to a minimum. He explains that Europeans came to Africa largely for economic reasons, thus, their presence on the continent was limited to a small number of trading enclaves along the west and east African coasts.
According to Vandervort, in 1876 more than 90% of the African continent was ruled by Africans. However, by 1914, all but Liberia and Ethiopia were controlled by European powers. The author explains that the ability of the Europeans to recruit large armies of African troops and the technology advantage that European countries had over African countries were the major reasons for European success in the African colonial wars. The motives for participation in the imperial venture were multiple and complex and they varied considerably among European nations.
Vandervort describes the pre-colonial years of the nineteenth century as a time of movement toward a greater centralization of power. In larger polities such as the Zulu empire in Southern Africa, the jihad states of al-Hajj Umar, Ahmadu Seku and Samori in West Africa, the Mahdist theocratic state in the Sudan, the rejuvenated Solomonic empire of Ethiopia, the Sokoto empire of northern Nigeria, and the Ashanti empire of present-day Ghana, an internally-generated change might have opened up a distinctly African path to modernity. Given the opportunity, African nations might have eventually liberalized their political, legal and fiscal institutions to make room for their more productive classes. These classes could then have commercially collaborated with the European mercantilists. If this had occurred, African nations might have retained their political and economic independence through an open door policy of trading with the world.
This process was brought to a halt as a result of two factors: first, through conquest and subsequent imperial rule, the Europeans were able to impose their own economic and political priorities onto African institutions and society conquest. Secondly, African societies were almost entirely unable to bury long-standing ethnic and political animosities long enough to forge alliances against the Europeans. Vandervort reveals in great detail the African nations' unwillingness to rethink military strategies and tactics that had proven ineffective against European methods of warfare. He shows how their refusal to abandon hierarchical and inequitable social structures inhibited the African peoples from presenting a united front against the European invasion. Europeans were able to turn ethnic groups and religious factions against each other. Ethnic divisions, tribal rivalries, religious differences and conflicts between regions all played into the hands of the Europeans.
In conclusion, the author has written a thorough and well-documented book and is able to discuss both the European and African perspectives without bias. Additionally, the military aspects of the wars are clearly explained. The social, economic and political background is illustrated to provide the reader with a greater understanding of European imperialism in Africa and the effects it still has on the Continent. Therefore, this book is a must for those readers who want to better understand the confluence of factors that led to the success of the European conquest of Africa.
Not a cornerstone.......2001-07-21
The author clearly stuggles with the sheer grandiose nature of the task. Often glossing over key events and toiling over insignificants. The language of the text is laborious, making the reading all the more dulling.
Despite the seemingly harsh words, I still did read the book from beginning to end, not missing a word. The clever angles the author uses on occasion and the "I'm not sure if I really like this, but it seems interesting", new school of Military History interpretation. A good brick in the wall, but not a cornerstone.
