Book Description

Building or remodeling an adobe house is an artistic endeavor, with all the satisfaction-and occasional frustration-of any artistic effort. But once you've lived sheltered by adobe walls, you won't want anything else. Introducing the traditional ins and outs of each architectural element-roofs and ceilings, doors, windows, floors, walls, and portals--The Small Adobe House is both an introduction to adobe structures and an idea book for people who want to remodel a classic home or build a new one. Beyond the basics, Reeve and Reck illustrate possibilities for frills, show that any kind of interior decor is accepted by adobe walls, and give examples of contemporary innovations in adobe houses. The final word on the small adobe house is that it combines the best of several elements: comfort, adaptability, tradition, and almost limitless possibilities for expansion and personal expression. Agnesa Reeve's informed commentary and Robert Reck's exquisite photographs combine to create a magical adobe experience. Agnesa Reeve, a historian, is past president of the Historic Santa Fe Foundation. Her writings about southwestern architecture and cuisine have been published in journals, and her books include From Hacienda to Bungalow (UNM Press, 1988) and Cooking with a Handful of Ingredients (Cimarron Press, 1993). She lives in Santa Fe. Robert Reck is a contributing photographer to Architectural Digest and has been published in most of the major architectural journals worldwide, including Architecture, Architectural Record, A+U, and Hauser. He was the lead photographer for the book Santa Fe Style and has significantly contributed to the monographs of many preeminent architects, including Antoine Predock and Robert A. M. Stern.

This is a great additional to our book collection and is a must have for anyone who is designing their house with the "Santa Fe" look. The pictures are just wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Small Adobe House.......2006-11-04

This is a beautiful book. It is an excellent addition to my library of Adobe house books. I will be building an adobe house in the next couple of years and this book is a great reference.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta love Adobe.......2006-07-08

Great book showing some fantastic homes. Lots of great ideas for when I move west and get an adobe. If you have an interest in this type and style home this is a good book to have in your library.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Choice.......2006-04-19

In comparison to other books available about adobe houses, the content of this book offers little range and depth. Other choices were less superficial.

5 out of 5 stars A delightful surprise!.......2002-04-25

Robert Reck's photography is beautiful (as always). It was a wonderful surprise to see MY OWN Santa Fe work in the book!

The book gives a great feel for the beauty of the Adobe Home and the time tested vernacular of the details.

When director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Family Man, Red Dragon) bought Hilhaven Lodge, the former home of Ingrid Bergman, his first purchase was an old-school black-and-white photo booth. Hilhaven Lodge: The Photo Booth Pictures captures--in candid, four-panel glory--the revolving door of A-listers who have passed through chez Ratner and stopped to strike a pose.

Things kick off with a meandering, though entertaining, introduction from the legendary Robert Evans (don't worry, he's in there--page 177). The photos are then alphabetized by first name--from Aaliyah to Zhang Ziyi--allowing for some surprising pairings: Don Cheadle and Don Rickles, Quentin Tarantino and Quincy Jones, and the sign-of-the-apocalypse match-up of Michael Jackson across the page from Mickey Rourke clutching a Chihuahua. When faced with the prospect of posing it seems that most subjects do one of the following: Stick Out Their Tongue (Estella Warren, Jackie Chan), Mug (Britney Spears, Danny DeVito), Vamp (Gina Gershon, Rebecca Gayheart); Kiss (Bridget Fonda and Danny Elfman, Edward Norton and Selma Hayek), or Flip the Bird (Lara Flynn Boyle, Philip Seymour Hoffman). Paris Hilton pops up (as expected) along with Leonardo DiCaprio, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, and Chelsea Clinton. Christopher Penn looks like he's daring you to take the first swing, and, sporting a shaved head and thick goatee, Colin Farrell perfects the Escaped Con on a Bender look. And even without aid from their stylists or special lighting, there's no denying the natural glamour in some of these candid photos--Matthew McConaughey, Monica Bellucci, and Heidi Klum's snapshots sizzle.

You'll want to clear off a VIP spot on your coffee table for Hilhaven Lodge, one very cool and austere collection. --Brad Thomas Parsons

      Book Description

Red-hot Hollywood director Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Rush Hour II, Red Dragon, and an upcoming mega blockbuster soon to be announced), lives in Ingrid Bergman's old manse, Hillhaven Lodge. And in this house Ratner has an old-fashion, black-and-white photo booth. And into this photo booth Ratner has enticed a cornucopia of white-hot celebrities, outsized personalities, and rare public legends, all of whom voluntarily vogued, posed, and made silly faces without makeup, wardrobe, or lighting, in four quick shots. The result is a hilarious and revealing look at generally famous people being...silly, and, well, normal. Hillhaven Lodge: The Photo Booth Pictures is comprised of wacky and outrageous picture strips of Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Colin Farrell, Heath Ledger, Heidi Klum, Shaquille O'Neal, Chris Tucker, Kim Cattrall, Jackie Chan, Dino De Laurentiis, Clive Davis, Aaliyah, Edward Norton, Salma Hayek, Quincy Jones, Ralph Fiennes, Rod Stewart, Val Kilmer, Liv Tyler, Harvey Keitel, Jay-Z, John C. Reilly, Russell Simmons, Nicolas Cage, Sean "P. Diddy" Combs, Jack Osbourne, Paris Hilton, Tommy Hilfiger, Tony Shafrazi, Mariah Carey, Matthew McConaughey, Chelsea Clinton, Rebecca Gayheart, Norman Lear, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robert Downey Jr., and many, many more!

Il gioco dell'autoritratto si combina con la lunga vicenda della cabina per fototessere (photobooth): felice connubio, miscelato con un poco di vanità (da star system), che offre un punto di vista che si aggiunge a una storia lunga.

Super crazy macho kung-fu, Chinese style. Super kung fu guy nutso goes around killing other similar guys to draw out a master.

Not much luck there. The fifth brother of the Wu-Tang clan has adventures, meets yet another super kung-fu guy, and also a girl. Much posturing with various secret super cool powers, etc.

      Throw in some magic swords.

      Then a kid.

4 out of 5 stars Great Action Comic.......2006-03-24

If I would have known these books were so cheap online I would have been ordering them all the time. Anywayz....... I have volumes 1-5 and they are awesome!!!! I first found one of these on the bus and did some online research and found about these different series of books. I am so addictid now! <--- probably spelled that wrong. Any way, if you like kung fu movies and comics you can definately enjoy these books, because they have fantastic art which seems a lot like Jim Lee's work (artist for the Old X-Men comics and Batman currently). This story starts off with sort of a romeo and juliet type of plot and then its the typical revenge plot in kung fu stories when the son of the couple gets older and theres the typical sublots through out the story as read. The action sequences are in my opinion breath taking. The lines used to show movement perfectly portray the kung-fu in this line of comic graphic novel.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Adaptation.......2004-06-30

Having read the Chinese story several years ago, I was surprised and excited to find it in comic book form. This is a great story about heroism and Chinese culture. And the story is exciting: intrigue, subplots, deception, fighting, and a little love thrown in to balance it all out. The art is exceptional, my only complaint is the blatant un-feminine appearance of the female monks-they look just like the men, and it's confusing to people that aren't aware of the story.

All in all, it's a great introduction to Chinese culture, and an exciting comic book for those that aren't that interested in it. For a true taste of Jin Yong's (née Louis Cha) writing make sure to check out John Minford's translation of "The Deer and the Cauldron" also here on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Ma Wing Shing's incredible illustrations with Cha's story!.......2003-02-02

I have,so far, 4 volumes of this large comic book from Comics One, and if you are a fan of Swordfight stories you will really enjoy this. This is NOT KUNGFU, that you see in movies that are dubbed. I don't know if this story was originally told in serial form in daily newspapers in Hong Kong or not, but Louis Cha is a very popular author among Chinese readers. This is a swordfight story which is a totally different genre of storytelling. I guess the closest comparison would be to Stormriders (the movie and Comic with Cheng Ekin and Aaron Kwok, that was originally a comic illustrated and told by Ma Wing Shing. The next closest comparison would be to "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" the movie and comic book and story. Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre is beautifully illustrated and tells,in the first 4 volumes, the story of Wuji, a little boy born to parents from oposing warring clans. It is about his adventures, and how he is influenced by his Father's nobility/righteousness of character (a member of the Wu Tang clan specializing in internal skills) and his love for his mother "a sorceress of the evil sky clan". The first volume tells of how his father and mother meet and it is a dashing romantic story that hooks you and makes you feel you care and want to know more about how the improbable marriage of a beautiful "sorceress" to an idealistic chivalrous young man works out, and the magic and mystery surrounding the heaven sword. There is poetry when Louis Cha (who has written many stories)has the sorceress start falling in love with Wuji's future father when he challenges an enemy with internal skills calligraphy imprinted onto the side of a stonemountain. The second volume deals with their son meeting the consequences of his parents love for each other as they go back home, and face their relatives and clan members. The third volume starts with the adventures of Wuji, and the meeting of a number of people such as an evil healer and a number of different little girls that he ends up meeting again when he is grown up. Many styles of fighting/internal chi and weapons techniques are mentioned throughout, after all, this is a Swordfight comic, and I like every aspect of it. The illustrations are gorgeous, and it is not the wide-eyed comics that you may have seen. Unfortunately, the cover of the 1st volume doesn't really tell about the story, because the first volume is classic chinese romantic stuff with dashing fighting and display of a number of external/internal hard/soft styles of swordfighting. Heaven Sword is also about the intricate complexity of relationships surrounding the heaven sword and dragon sabre. I love it. I believe this will appeal more to mature readers than to those expecting the "kung fu" that they might have been exposed to.

                Book Description

The 1960 Olympic Winter Games in Squaw Valley, California, literally introduced winter sports, particularly ice hockey, to the American public through television. During the average minute the Olympics were on the air, 26.1% of homes with sets (black and white only) were tuned in.

Twenty million Americans watched the nationally televised game between the U.S. and Russia on Saturday afternoon, February 27; more than the combined audience of all other programs on the air at the same time.

Squaw Valley Gold tracks the struggle over control of amateur hockey in the United States¡ªfrom the world tournament at the 1920 Olympic Summer Games in Antwerp, Belgium to America's first gold medal in Olympic ice hockey, a largely misunderstood and forgotten period in the country's sports history.

The Squaw Valley Winter Games were known as the Hollywood Olympics. Walt Disney programmed the pageantry and invited his Hollywood friends to the party. Euopeans fretted and fumed over the Disneyland atmosphere, but the athletes (housed together in a private Olympic Village) and spectators had a great time, rubbing elbows with Bing Crosby, Marlene Dietrich, Jayne Mansfield, Roy Rogers, Red Skelton and Danny Kaye.

5 out of 5 stars Smart and mom-friendly guide to traveling with baby.......2004-07-08

This book is fabulous. I'm not sure what the earlier reviewers' problems were. It's fun to read and it's jam-packed with great tips on traveling with baby. Even experienced moms will get something out of this book.

On the Go with Baby contains many amusing anecdotes about Lutz's travels with her daughter. However, as someone who resides overseas, and has already traveled to Hong Kong, Bali, and back and forth across the Pacific with an eight month old I was looking for more specific information. Her book did not even contain something as simple and helpful as a travel checklist of items to bring for around town or for out of town trips--I found that on the Babies R Us website and modified it to my needs. As someone who has, an will continue to take long flights with a little one I was also looking for ingenious ways to keep the little guy entertained on long hauls--no such luck. The strategies for eating out are common sense and ones you are probably doing already. There is really nothing new or enlightening in this book.

1 out of 5 stars Where's the real info anyway?.......2003-05-14

I bought this book for my wife upon the birth of our child. We travel often and were hoping for some actual information that would help us TRAVEL with our baby, we already knew what to pack when visiting our neighbor. We were bored out of our minds listening to stories about the author's 'little junior'- don't waist your money on this one! We are still looking for a book with REAL information concerning the technicalities of traveling with our baby.

Cross Erma Bombeck with Vicki Iovine and add a touch of tongue-in-cheek West Coast friendly irony and you've got "On the Go with Baby." In my social circle, this has become a favorite shower/new baby gift.

No, this isn't your standard Fodor's type guidebook that gives prices (which change) and hotel suggestions (which also change). I'd suggest Fodors for that. BUT! If you want something quirky and very useful, get this book. It's such a great book for raising the spirits of frustrated new parents. The information in here is *real* child care information. The author is has been here, there, and everywhere with her child and stepkids and it shows. Want to start a home business with a baby around? Want to know how to order in a cafe with a baby around? Want to go camping or overseas? It's all here. A great tip book, especially for sleep deprived and stressed new parents -- that would be all of us.

                    1 out of 5 stars ugh........2002-09-16

THis book had lots and lots of "adorable" stories about cute things the author's child did while traveling. It did not have much information that you couldn't figure out yourself, using common sense. I tired quickly of the author's anecdotes, and wished she had more substantial information, such as info on renting/availability of car seats, high chairs, services in different hotels , services provided by airlines, etc. Don't waste your money on this book, unless you are the type that never tires of hearing endearing stories about a stranger's child!

This book fully details the grim years of the Second World War for Britain in the Mediterranean when a small group of Hurricane fighters helped to keep Malta secure as a valuable base for the British. These planes succeeded the 3 Gloster Gladiator biplane fighters - named 'Faith', 'Hope', and 'Charity' - which constituted for a time the only defense for Malta against the aerial onslaught on Malta by the Italian Regia Aeronautica, which began shortly after Italy declared war on Britain in June 1940.

Though the Hurricane performed well against the Regia Aeronautica, it had a very hard time standing up to the Luftwaffe when it made its presence keenly felt over Malta during 1941. In particular, the Messerschmitt 109 fighter, which outclassed it in almost every respect. Nevertheless, the Hurricane helped to keep Malta free as Britain faced the spectre of defeat in the Mediterranean between 1940 and 1942.

                        Book Description

In Art and Intellect in the Philosophy of Étienne Gilson, Francesca Aran Murphy tells the story of this French philosopher's struggle to reconcile faith and reason. In his lifetime, Gilson often stood alone in presenting Saint Thomas Aquinas as a theologian, one whose philosophy came from his faith. Today, Gilson's view is becoming the prevalent one. Murphy provides us with an intellectual biography of this Thomist leader throughout the stages of his scholarly development.

"To let Gilson gently fade away into the limbo of secondary thinkers would be a disservice to mankind. This book is a stimulus to remaining awake about the intellectual debates unfolding today in the Catholic Church."--Thomas Langan

                              Book Description

This spectacularly illustrated book chronicles the exciting progress of scientific investigation through the ages as it has been mirrored in the art used to document its ideas and breakthroughs. From the cave paintings of prehistory through the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Assyria, and
Greece to Renaissance drawings and modern microscopy, these images reveal the hidden influences and cultural pressures of their times in addition to chronicling and communicating a wealth of contemporary observation and knowledge. The author has organized each section of this survey by taking some
of the earliest surviving examples of illustration, and moving through time to the present. Thus separate chapters focus on the animal world, herbs and the birth of botany, physics and the science of non-living matter, mankind in the world; the world in space; and other seminal topics. This
organization, and its freedom from a fixed chronology, has enabled the author to show science actually shaping its own story, with surprisingly sophisticated images emerging centuries in advance of today's high-tech instrumentation. The illustrations--most of which are from the British Library
collections--have been chosen from among the best preserved in the world, some never before reproduced. All help to show how scientific illustration first arose; how it mirrored in many ways the value systems of the science of its time; how images were borrowed, transformed, and occasionally came
to predict future discoveries; and how science evolved from one breathtaking era to the next. This is a work that will stimulate and inspire all readers interested in art and science, and the ingenuity of the scientific mind.

5 out of 5 stars An impressive collection of scholarly essays.......2001-05-22

Science And The Visual Image In The Enlightenment is an impressive collection of scholarly essays which examine the role illustrations played in the creation and dissemination of scientific knowledge during the 18th century, the commonly referred to "Age of Enlightenment". These articulate, informative, engaging essays include Domesticating Science in the Eighteenth Century (John Heilbron); Joseph Wright of Derby - Art, Science and the Validity of Artistic Language (Werner Busch); The Rhetoric of Experiments and Scientific Illustrations in the Enlightenment (William R. Shea); Chemical Imagery and the Enlightenment of Matter (Marco Beretta); Some Reflections on Geometrical Diagrams and Mathematical Physics (Fernand Hallyn); Naturalistic Illustrations and Collections in Tuscany in the Eighteenth Century (Lucia Tongiorgi Tomasi); Instruments and Illustrations in Eighteenth-Century Astronomy (Jim Bennett); Illustrated Course of Natural Philosophy in the Southern Low Countries, 1670-1797 (Carmelia Opsomer); Women Illustrators of Natural History in the Enlightenment (Julia Lindkvist); Catalogues of Dutch Botanical Gardens in the Enlightenment (Carla Oldensburger-Ebbers). Science And The Visual Image In The Enlightenment is enthusiastically recommended to students of the history of science in general, and European 18th century science illustration in particular.
