Book Description
A remarkable collection of vibrant and diverse readings, Sustainable Architecture White Papers explores the critical link between our built and natural environments. Cutting-edge architecture, design, planning, public works, and education leaders illustrate the value of a new architectural strategy. Sustainable Architecture teaches us that when creative processes are used in conjunction with social, cultural, and environmental systems, architecture can meet the aesthetic and practical requirements of today without compromising the needs of future generations.
A sample of the contents reveals a top-notch team of forward-thinkers: William McDonough: "Eco-effectiveness: A New Design Strategy" Croxton Collaborative Architects: "Human-Centered Sustainable Design" Architectural Record: "Taking the Elective Out of Environmental Education" Karl Linn: "Reclaiming the Commons" Pliny Fisk: "Advanced Green Building" James Wines: "The Art of Architecture in the Age of Ecology" Emilio Ambasz: "Green Towns"
This beautifully assembled compilation, published by the Earth Pledge Foundation, follows on the success of Sustainable Cuisine White Papers and reflects the organization's mission to promote sustainability, primarily in the areas of architecture and cuisine. Working with architects, builders and designers, and farmers, chefs, and restaurateurs, Earth Pledge creates nonprofit media projects that promote "green living" in these respective areas.
With a preface by Paul Hawken, this is a star-studded collection of essays on sustainable architecture that speaks to professionals and nonprofessionals alike. A perfect read for anyone interested in how the architecture and design aesthetic connects with environmental sustainability.

The voices of sustainable design.......2001-06-26
The Earth Pledge Foundation's Sustainable Architecture White Papers brings together leading voices---of architects, designers, planners, educators, manufacturers, and journalists---in a handsome, diminutive volume. The essayists are each a part of the sustainable design movement; some have been in the trenches for years, such as Randy Croxton and Kirsten Childs, James Wines, and Bill Browning, and others are household names, such as William McDonough (writing with his chemist collaborator Michael Braungart). Some address the big picture and others deconstruct the micro components of the effort, such as non-toxic paints and office furniture. The volume includes an interview with Samuel Mockbee, who founded Auburn University's Rural Studio, and whose clear-eyed approach to how architecture fits into communities is remarkably elegant and simple. "The smart architect thinks rationally about a combination of issues including sustainability, durability, longevity, appropriate materials, and sense of place," he says. "The challenge is finding the balance between environmental considerations and economic constraints." What's important about a diverse collection of essays like this now is that it comes when the movement is breaking into the mainstream in a more complete way than it has in the past. Sustainability is being addressed, increasingly, as something that involves not just the physical but also the social, institutional, and spiritual aspects of life on earth. This volume is a valuable guide to that breakthrough, from the practical to the visionary.

Rough Trade.......2004-03-01
This is a fascinating book on several levels. The pictures document a classic gay aethestic that survives today, and the text douments what was really behind it.
"Rough Trade" is a gay term that dates back to the 19th Century, and was a term coined by artistocratic gay males whose sexual tastes were toward physically robust, crude working class men and boys. To the effete artistocrats with their soft bodies and socialization, the pure physical lust and crude masculinity of the simple farm boy or laborer was the ultimate sexual delight. The 'sin' of flouting class differences and having wild sex with your so-called 'inferiors' doubled the pleasure for these men.
None other than Oscar Wilde himself described this indulgence as 'feasting with panthers'. It is often forgotten that the public outrage to his sexual activities was as much about his flouting of class barriers as his homosexuality. Wilde's indiscretions on BOTH sides of the class barrier, constantly endulging himself with adolescent street boys, and flouting a Viscount who warned Wilde repeatedly to stop diddling his son.
This book definately provides a peak into the era before gay sexual liberation and gay identity politics. What is often misinterpreted as homophobia is in reality resentment of the masses toiling 12 hour a day for starvation wages so the sons of aristocrats could flit around and endulge the boredom of their idleness by seducing economically desperate working class males.
a worthy addition to any gay man's collection.......2000-01-14
The price is a bit dear but worth it for those interested in pre war gay Britain. Gives insights into a very Edwardian gay couple and as a bonus lots of info about gay men in Britain and where and how they connected in the years before World War 2. I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend it.

A humorous, tender story of the complicated friendship between a 20-something American and a 50-something Mayan Indian in Belize.

About "Following Mateo".......2004-02-21
An odyssey: into the jungles and wetlands of Belize, into the hearts and lives of a few native Belizians, and into the process of self knowledge and maturity, best describes, for me, Tom Molanphy's well crafted adventure/pilgrimage book: Following Mateo! Tom writes with grace and great self deprecating humor and enthusiasm about his journey to Belize as a volunteer teacher, his evolving friendship with an older tribal wise man and leader, Mateo, and their adventures.
Through an invitation to personally tutor Mateo's young daughter, Tom experiences the hospitality of Mateo's family and a growing knowledge of their way of life. Tom's desire to get Mateo to take him "into the bush," i.e., the deep jungle territory where (in his perception) ancient ritual hunting and gathering rites of the Ke'kechi take place. His subsequent hiking adventures to "prove" his capabilities to Mateo provide hilarious incidents of gradual self awareness for this young American "gringo," Tom.
As a veteran Jr. High/High School humanities teacher, I feel that this is a book that would appeal to this age range of student. It is a very "good read" for the adult reader as well.
"A Hunt for the Self in the Jungles of Southern Belize".......2004-02-02
Tom Molanphy has a good story to tell about a search for self in a country of different cultures, languages, races, etc. While reading "Following Mateo" I was transported back from the hazzles of everyday life and never-ending city activity to Southern Belize where, through Tom's creative descriptions, I found myself engulfed by nature. Peppered with humor Tom lets us experience father nature in a unique fashion. He tells of how it demands respect,of how we have to adjust to accommodate it and of how rough it can be and yet how soothing her gentle embrace. The book took me through trails under the towering canopies and over mountains that lead to discoveries of people living from the land. People who have learned to coexist and respect the land.
The book was and excellent read. It thought me about the journey of life and the little journeys within. It also thought me to, every now and then, "stop and smell the flowers, but to be careful not to get stung by a bee that may have beat me to those flowers".
Jumanji - Hitting it!.......2003-05-02
Following Mateo is definitely a down to earth book. My friend Tom definitely put it right about life in the southern villages of Toledo and also as a missionary. I've known Tom for the two years that he spent here in Belize. I loved the book and will definitely read it again.
Joyful Journey.......2003-03-30
Following Mateo is a personal memoir of Tom Molanphy's two year stint as a volunteer educator in Belize. Mateo is a Mayan Indian whom the author becomes very close to in the course of his internship. Following Mateo, the title, refers to the author's attempts to get Mateo to take him to the bush country of Belize. The author has successfully integrated history, anthropology, cross cultural studies and religion into this highly readable memoir.
I am a college professor teaching English l02 - a writing course using argument from social science topics and also literature, particulary memoir. My students - all l05 of them - absolutely loved the book. They liked the author's descriptive writing style which made them feel they were right there in Belize. They liked the many lively characters that the author presents. They liked the way the author integrated his personal journey with the daily events. They liked reading about a young man on an adventure who had questions about life, about religion, about risktaking. They liked the crosscultural atmosphere of the book and the way the author showed these differences. They liked the light hearted and humorous aspects of the book. They liked the various insights the author gained during his journey, especially about friendship. In writing their essays they were able to center on diverse messages and were often able to interract with the memoir from their own experiences. One student said she liked the book because the author opened himself up and was not "preachy". I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the essays my students were able to write due to the many insights the author offered. It was indeed a journey of joy. I recommend this book to college professors of freshman writing and senior high school teachers as well as volunteer coordinators in various non-profit groups.
Learning about Belize with a laugh..........2003-03-30
I really enjoyed this book. Without even noticing, I learned about the country of Belize and the Mayan culture as the author creatively wove historical details into a humorous, touching account of his own journey. I found myself both sympathizing and laughing with him as he tries to learn, and keep up, with the ins and outs of an unfamiliar culture. I became quickly invested in the main character and eager for him to come out on top!

We have a large family of six children and we found the suggestions in this book to be fabulous for our family! We enjoyed all that we have tried and plan to try a lot more if not all of them over the next few years!!!!! Thanks for all the great memories and we really can't wait to make more with our children! Jane Leahy-Smith mom to 6 wonderful children!
You must be kidding..........2001-09-30
...Wonder why there are so many used copies of this book for sale? I would like to sell my brand new copy, but there are already seven other disappointed readers out there trying to sell theirs! This book is filled with ideas which are too ridiculously silly for words. Unless you are a Brady family member, in which case you will think these activities are "super!". I couldn't even leave this book out for friends and family to look at because the ideas are so stupid. Really. I can't believe anyone who uses this book would play more than a few of these games. If you must buy this book, please help someone out and buy a used copy!
The book you family wants you to read.......2000-02-06
Simple Fun explains how to obtain balance in your life. Unlike more well meaning advise books, Simple Fun gives you the skill-set to do it,day after day. Your family wants you to read this book.
You need this book!.......1999-08-11
This book is exactly what I have been looking for! It's a collection of many easy ideas for ways to have fun in many daily activities, such as waking up & going to bed, dealing with chores, and waiting. My imagination doesn't extend much beyond playing "I Spy" with my children, so we really need this book. The author also discusses why play & fun are important, but any parent or person involved with children knows this. This book gives you concrete ways to have fun, encourages you to use your own imagination, and best of all, you don't need lots of money or "stuff" to use these ideas. As the author says, "the best things in life aren't things".
Great Book For Summer Time Traveling with the Kids.......1999-07-04
We got this book last year at Christmas, and it has some great ideas for "spontaneous' games that you can play with the kids while traveling. Whether you are going by car, plane or train, the kids frequently get antsy or bored. There are many games that take no planning, and use common things around you, to entertain, get silly, and just enjoy.

A loud figure in a quiet business.......2004-08-09
A biography of Herbert Yardley is welcome. David Kahn has done a remarkable job unearthing many aspects of the life of an obscure figure in American history. Kahn is a fine, readable writer, in this book no less than in prior ones. I very much enjoyed his Seizing the Enigma (1991).
My lack of enthusiasm for this book centers on Yardley. During the 1920s, Yardley enjoyed a comfy salary heading a U.S. government cipher office in New York, where he might laze for an hour a day. In contrast, William F. Friedman, working for the Army, wrote about cryptanalysis, studied statistics, and evaluated the usefulness of tabulating machines, forerunners of computers. When the Hoover Administration reduced funding to his office, Yardley wrote a book, melodramatically called the American Black Chamber, which revealed the world of coded communications and U.S. efforts to read foreign communications. In so doing, he sold secrets to which he was privvy. Thereafter, he went Hollywood, contributing to screen plays. During 1938-39, he was employed by China to work on Japanese communications; his service was uninspired. Because Yardley had proven to be indiscreet, the U.S. did not make use of him during World War II, during which code-breaking was an important element in Anglo-American success. In 1957, Yardley published his second best-selling book, this one on playing poker. Not many authors write one popular book, let alone two.
Kahn speculates that Friedman envied Yardley's success with women. No evidence that this would be the basis for Friedman's dislike of Yardley is provided and it seems unlikely. In any event, Friedman and many others within the British and U.S. intelligence agencies rendered extraordinary, educated, hardworking service in the years leading up to and beyond the Second World War. Friedman would be the much more important figure for history.
Kahn refers to Yardley's "immortal legacy" of introducing codebreaking in the U.S. Codebreaking would have come to the U.S. regardless of the coincidental early participation by Yardley. By his writings, Yardley may be justly appreciated for contributing to popular culture. This book persuades me that Yardley's service to his nation was minor and thoroughly self-serving.
Because of particular interests, I happen to be glad to have read this book. It is well-written, well-researched, and pleasantly concise.
A Forgotten Intelligence Innovator.......2004-04-15
Despite its current reputation, there were times when American intelligence (meaning spying) was an unalloyed success. For many, the most interesting part of the spy business is signals intelligence, tuning into or breaking into foreign messages and decoding them. There has been signals intelligence of some sort ever since there has been international conflict, but the field took off when messages could be transmitted wirelessly. Anyone could pick up the signal, so the trick was to encode it; the counter-trick was to crack the code. Cryptographers and other spies already know and respect the name of Herbert O. Yardley. He isn't well known by others, but almost fifty years after his death, he has gotten a full, instructive biography, _The Reader of Gentleman's Mail: Herbert O. Yardley and the Birth of American Codebreaking_ (Yale University Press) by David Kahn. Kahn is the perfect teller of this tale, having written both articles for scholarly journals as well as popular books about intelligence matters. There is not a great deal of detail about the procedures of decryption, which are described only generally, but there is a unique American life here. According to Kahn, Yardley better than anyone foresaw how important cracking signals could be to American intelligence. He created the first permanent agency to intercept messages and break them. He was "the most colorful and controversial figure in American intelligence," and his controversial actions are fully included here.
Yardley came to Washington DC in 1914, working as a telegrapher in the State Department. He was fascinated by the messages that came in and out, and determined that he would give his life to cryptography. His efforts within the Army Signal Corp were effective, but more important even than the wartime accomplishments was that Yardley convinced the Army and State Department to continue signal intelligence after Armistice Day. He believed that the stream of international communications could indicate the attitudes and plans of nations who were our friends as well as our foes. He was right; his work ensured that America knew what the aims of the Japanese were at the arms limitation talks in 1921, saving the government millions of dollars and buying some years of peace. Those who thought that "Gentlemen do not read each other's mail" eventually closed his bureau down. Yardley was, at different times in his life, to make up cryptogram puzzles for magazines, to go into the invisible ink business, to write novels, to write screenplays for Hollywood, to run a restaurant, and to attempt commercial orange-juice distillation, as well as to become decoder-for-hire for Canada and China. He made a hit with his first book in 1931, The American Black Chamber, which caused immediate furor, about his government decryptions. He showed what his bureau had done, and the reading public was very much interested. He was accused of treason, but Kahn shows that Yardley was merely trying to make big money, at which he never was very successful. It was his main character flaw: "Yardley was a rotter, not a traitor."
One year before his death, Yardley published _The Education of a Poker Player_, full of anecdotes about poker games in which he had played as well as practical advice about how to win. It is regarded as a classic, and is still in print and is admired by serious gamblers and penny ante basement players. It was a good way for Yardley to bow off the world's stage, but is not his lasting monument. When it came time to start busting codes again as World War II loomed, no one had to be convinced that cryptanalysts were good sources of power. Yardley, the first American governmental cryptographer, had done his part to make America stronger through signal intelligence. He was an important and flawed figure who deserves more recognition; he has, surprisingly, had no biography written before, and Kahn's detailed and readable book will always be the definitive one on the subject.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A204793. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis proposes an improvement to present near-shore wave prediction models. Using weakly dispersive Boussinesq theory, the shoaling of directionally spread surface gravity waves over a beach with gentle gradients in the cross-shore and alongshore directions is examined. Following Herbers and Burton (1997), the governing fluid flow equations are expanded to third order and depth-integrated over the water column. A resulting amplitude evolution equation for a spectrum of waves is derived, which is the main result of this paper. New terms in the higher order result include effects due to alongshore bottom slope, higher order cross-shore depth variations, and non-linear quartet interactions. The linear terms in this equation are verified by analytical methods using linear finite depth theory. Example computations for a monochromatic wave train over a plane beach quantify some of the improvements of this result over the lower order model. Opportunities for further development and verification of this result are proposed, and recommendations for application of the result in its present form are outlined.

Description:
A non-linear shallow water wave model operating on the time-scale of wave groups is compared with measurements of infragravity motions on a rip-channel beach to verify the model concepts and assess the model performance. The measurements were obtained during the RIP-current EXperiment (RIPEX) in concert with the Steep Beach Experiment (SBE) performed at Sand City, Monterey Bay, CA, during the spring of 2001. The nearshore bathymetry was made up of shore-connected shoals incised by relatively narrow rip-channels spaced approximately 125 m apart. The comparison considers a 20-day period during which significant changes in both the offshore wave climate and nearshore bathymetry occurred. The temporal variation in infragravity conditions during the experiment is strong, with computational results typically explaining 70% to 80% of the observed infragravity motions within the nearshore. In contrast to the temporal variation, the alongshore spatial variation in infragravity intensity during the experiment is generally weak, even though the underlying bathymetry shows strong depth variations. Model computations suggest preferential coupling between the computed edge wave motions and the quasi-periodic bathymetry is present, a prerequisite for strong spatial variability. However, the infragravity field is dominated by cross-shore infragravity motions, which are only weakly coupled to the quasi-periodic bathymetry, resulting in a weak alongshore variability of the total infragravity motions.

Description:
The wave-driven alongshore sediment transport is commonly supposed to smooth out the irregularities on the coastline. However, it has been shown that waves approaching the coast with a high angle with respect the shore-normal can reverse that tendency and cause the rectilinear coast to be unstable [Ashton, A., Murray, A.B., Arnault, O., 2001. Formation of coastline features by large-scale instabilities induced by high-angle waves. Nature 414, 296-300; Falques, A., Calvete, D., 2005. Large scale dynamics of sandy coastlines. Diffusivity and instability. J. Geophys. Res. 110, doi:10.1029/2004JC002587]. The extended one-line coastline model presented in the latter paper is here applied to investigate the stability of the Dutch coast. The main aim is testing the hypothesis that the shoreline sand waves observed along this coast could be generated by such an instability. It is found that the Dutch coast has potential for instability. This is most prominent on the Holland coast, followed by the Delta coast and is very weak on the Wadden coast. Whether the instability actually occurs or not depends on the cross-shore bathymetric profile of the shoreline waves. Under the sensible assumption that the bathymetric perturbation is just a shift of the equilibrium beach profile, the Dutch coast is stable. In this case, the mean annual coastline diffusivity is evaluated and it is found to be typically about 0.010-0.015 m^2 s^-^1, that is, roughly smaller by a factor 2 than that predicted by the traditional one-line model. However, the Dutch coast may be unstable with respect to coastline waves with a maximum bathymetric signal at a few hundred meters from the coast. This is shown in one case where the shoals associated with the sand wave are inside the surf zone during moderate storm waves. Thus the sand waves could result from the cross-shore redistribution of the sand associated with an alongshore series of shoals and bed depressions generated by the alongshore transport in the surf zone. While the generation or not of such shoreline waves by this instability strongly depends on their profile, its propagation once they have been created is less sensitive and is well reproduced by the present model. It is explained why the propagation is to the NE along the Delta and Wadden coasts, why it is faster on the latter and why on the Holland coast there is no clear propagation direction.
