Book Description
No longer just a bland square of pressure-treated lumber nailed to the back of the house, decks have taken on new shapes, surfaces, and levels. And patios have evolved from dull slabs of poured concrete to encompass a wide range of forms and materials - from warm brick to chic bluestone to casual gravel. Taunton's Deck and Patio Idea Book is a photographic exploration of the possibilities for these spaces, and the features that define them, including railings, built-ins, and overhead structures. Hundreds of photos depict the full spectrum of styles and sizes, from the simple wraparound deck, to the curved, multilevel redwood deck with outdoor kitchen; from the small brick patio to an elaborate series of terraced patios with stone walls.

Nothing but the best.......2007-05-29
If you want the true grade and able to judge the true value of a coin, you need to be able to grade according to ANA standards yourself. There is no better book than this, with clear explanations and pictures. I buy and sell a lot of coins, and I use this book many times a week and recommend it to all.
Good Book...Great Quality.......2006-11-10
This is a great buy! All the info you need and good quality binding on the book.
Best Book Available On Coin Grading But Could Be Better.......2006-10-14
This is an excellent resource book for grading coins, however I feel that it would be far more useful if all of the photographs used in the description of coins, were in high definition glossy color. I realize that doing so would likely double or triple the price of the book, but it would be highly useful if the photographs of coins were of the same quality as is the description of them. I gave this book 5 stars because I believe that it is the best one available on the market, however, if another publisher comes out with an all color, high definition photograph coin grading book, this one would likely take a back seat to that one.
Great........2006-03-21
Terrific book and an improvement over previous editions. Still, I think it is a SERIOUS oversight that 4 very commonly used grades, VF25, VF35, AU53 and AU58 are not covered.

This book, simply put, is an absolute neccessity for all coin collectors. With Kenneth Bresset editing the book and Q. David Bowers narrating it, the book has to be awesome. It has, among many other things, The basic ANA Grading techniques, Key to official ANA Grading Standards: Circulation Strike Coins; Key to official ANA Grading Standards: Proof Coins, Advanced Grading Techniques, A closer focus on certain aspects of grading and the official ANA grading standards for each coin type. From AG-3 to MS-70. It also has notes that warn you about different things to look for in certain types of coins. Buy this book, you definately will not be disappointed.

It's official so you must have it, obviously, but for what?.......2004-01-02
This book contains the official grading standards of the ANA so obviously it is a must own for people who wish to grade within the standards of the ANA. I mean, that is why I purchased the thing but you know what?, I found that I didn't really need it...at least not this edition of it. This is because the ANA is the, ahem, gold standard when it comes to grading coins so practically any current book that you buy concerning the grading of coins will use this information as the baseline. Thus, you can buy books on the hobby that may focus on a topic more exciting to one and which are interesting reads as well, but which nevertheless will refer to the standards elucidated here as the starting point of any discussion of coin grade. What I am saying is that the information contained here is critical to establishing a coin grade so you probably already know what you need to know about these standards from other coins books you have read which purport to help you to establish grade bcause they use this book as a jumping off point. So, use this book as a reference manual, especially if you want to become a professional grader and all the while hope that the ANA comes out with an easier to read and more useful edition soon. Either that or read the other books out there by well-respected coin experts who use these standards and help you "how to use" the standards laid down in this book. The reason that I'd rely upon experts who write books on the hobby for such guidance is that they understand what makes one coin more desirable than another even though each ostensibly meet the objective standards contained in this book, and they tell you how they know and try to instruct you how to do the same. The best way that I can demonstrate what I am talking about is that I bought a coin on ebay that was slabbed by NGC to be a 1938 D/S buffalo nickel. I returned the coin to seller because the '8' in '1938' had been sheared off at the mint. Yet, this coin was in MS-65 condition according to the standards laid down in this book. Get my point?
Indispensible Guide.......2002-05-16
How many times have you heard a dealer say, "shine it up and it'll be BU?" If you're like me, you've seen the questionable grading standards of some dealers. Having a guide like this is absolutely essential if you're going to be spending money on coins. Being able to grade coins well is as essential to the hobby as buying the coin.
This guide has more information that simply what to look for in grading coinage. It has information on the history of the hobby, how to detect cleaning and other alterations, what the key areas are to look for in coins, and some other useful articles.
Grading coins is both art and science and you'll find even experts grading the same coin differently. But with a book like this you can have a basis of comparison. The only thing I wish the book had is more color photography of each grade/coin. But that's what the book Photograde is for...
Excellent.......1999-03-09
This book is one of the finest if not the very best tool avaliable today, not only to collectors but dealers as well. I strognly reccomed the purcahse and use of this book. Keeping in mind that you must pay close attention to the details for accurate grading.

Quite possibly the best photography textbook available.......2007-01-03
The late Michael Langford was one of the most prominent and acomplished authors of photography essays. His works are unrivaled in their analitical depth, focus on the fundamental principals and mechanisms in photography, but also in their serious academic approach on the subject.
Advanced Photography together with its companion volume Basic Photography are in my opinion truly invaluable source of well written, instructive information, covering nearly every aspect of the photographic process.
In this day and age where there is stifling overabundance of shallow, uninspiring and downright useless "textbooks", which are unable to teach you anything, Advanced Photography and Basic Photography stand as standard setting, one of a kind tutorials. Very highly recomended.
Excellent "advanced" photography.......2004-10-13
Although this book is not for everyone, I found it to be the best explanation and reference for many aspects of photography. Unlike other books, this goes into depth to explain the technology well. It is the kind of book that explains Density vs. Exposure curves, color balance and white point temperature (even mireds), lens, cameras, studio lights, etc, etc. It doesn't go into great depth of how to actually compose and capture a great picture, but it does go a long way to explaining how the tools work at a level that engineers or technology-savy people will appreciate.
Technical details.......2003-08-07
This book (5th edition) provided a few good, new tips and explainations, but my overall impression is one of incredibly technical detail on the practical aspects of equipment and processes. I feel like it's important enough to have a general understanding of "how things work" to stick with this book, but it does not give much advice on how to think about or approach photography. My eyes often glaze as they pass over how to read manufacturers' charts and graphs, how calculate focal length and color balance, etc., but if you're into that kind of information, you might be interested.
Michael Langford is the best photo author I've read.......1998-12-21
It is a great book to further understand photographic concepts from a scientific point of view. If anyone wants to master his photo skills this is the book.
My first steps as a photographer..........1998-10-17
Hi there, Well, I'm photographer. In 1982 I got that book and learnt photography by it. My first steps as a photographer... Today I have MA degree in photography and arts but still hapy to recommend this book.

A professor from a farm in Minnesota in 1914.......2007-10-21
This is a wonderful autobiography of a boy from a farm in rural central Minnesota who became a professor in a California Univrsity. It tells of his family's life and how he was supported by them in his quest for higher education and a career as a university profesor. It is an accurate and historically important account of places and people in central Minnesota and in colleges the author attended and later served as a faculty member. Anyone from Minnesota or similar locations will appreciate Professor Anderson's life story.

The women of American soccer come to life in this snappy, photo-rich, magazine-style book for young readers. The first women's soccer gold-medal game in Olympic history was held in Athens, Georgia, in 1996. Before that, "people didn't know women even played soccer," said star U.S. midfielder Kristine Lilly. "You'd tell them, 'I play for the U.S. National Team,' and they'd say 'What's that?'" Today, there are more than 7 million women and girls playing soccer in the United States. The players featured in this book--from Miah Hamm to Briana Scurry to Julie Foudy--formed the core of the 1999 Women's World Cup team, and make up the team that will compete in the 2000 Summer Olympic Games. Team members are profiled with sports photographer Michael Stahlschmidt's abundant, full-color pictures and with a brief essay describing their backgrounds, challenges, philosophies, and hobbies. Soccer fans will be inspired by the successes of the strong women athletes introduced in this light, accessible scrapbook. (Ages 8 and older)

The American Way.......2001-06-08
This book does have good pictures. ....I bought this book hoping for much more. I am a huge fan of the womens game in America, and I know many of the players, but this book does not do them justice. The player biographies are about half a page for most, and they are not all profiled in-depth. The superstars are, but the lesser known players barely have a paragraph. ....It is only about 15 pageas of reading, the rest of the 48 pages are pictures.
The photographs are fantastic!.......1999-10-31
The photographs of the women from the American World Cup are awesome! There is a summary on each player which is really cool! I especially liked Kristine Lilly's story because she's my favorite player. I loved the signatures of each player on the inside cover!
Book Description
From the coauthor of the New York Times bestseller Girlfriends comes a poignant celebration of the father-daughter relationship -- an unparalleled tribute to Dad by daughters, and to daughters by Dad.
Most women realize that, for good or ill, their fathers have played unique and potent roles in shaping their lives. When a daughter first meets her father, she makes room in her heart for the first significant man in her life; she becomes Daddy's little girl. As she moves beyond her early role of daughter to become a friend, lover, wife, colleague, or mother, a woman carries with her the enduring imprint of her father's touch. And not only are daughters shaped by their relationships with their fathers, but the fathers themselves are changed, molded, and inspired by their little girls.
In this uplifting collection of real-life interviews, both fathers and daughters share their sacred experiences of this one-of-a-kind bond. The engaging anecdotes involve close-knit father-daughter pairs as well as fathers and daughters who, for reasons of death or estrangement, chose to tell their tales individually. The stories here honor every type of father-daughter relationship, from those that seem made in Daddy-daughter heaven to those in which much hurt and sorrow have been overcome. Daughters speak of their fathers as teachers, disciplinarians, protectors, providers, even pushovers, and fathers talk about how having a daughter brought out their protective, responsible, and loving sides. By turns funny and sad, joyous and moving, Daddies and Daughters is a remarkable tribute to the extraordinary and enduring father-daughter relationship. It promises to become an instant classic for our time.
Customer Reviews:
It's all true. I was there when the stories were told........1999-09-07
This wonderful little gem of a book should be read by daughters and fathers in every country. The stories are based on fact. I was there when we were being taped. There wasn't a dry eye in the room. To see the dads and some of the daughters who actually went through these experiences would confirm your belief that good comes from all experiences, happy and sad. My daughter read the draft and started to call me again. Thank you for writing this book.
A Wonderful Book - The Kirkus Reviewer Was Wrong.......1999-05-25
This is a wonderful book. It was fascinating, and I could not stop reading it. It made me remember events in my childhood that I had long forgotten. I almost didn't read it because of the Kirkus review, which is wrong. I would like to thank the authors for creating such a touching collection.
Extraordinary!!.......1999-04-14
First, I want to say to anyone reading this IGNORE THAT STUPID KIRKUS REVIEW!! That reviewer must have been having a bad day, because he/she missed the whole point of the book. This book is about looking at the instinctive power available in this beautiful relationship. It is well written, and I almost didn't buy it because of that dumb review. This book made me laugh out loud, cry and ponder over the good things I've done as a dad and the bad things. I highly recommend it for any daddy or daughter at any age. It is extraordinary for those who want a good read!
What An Awesome Gift.......1999-03-27
What an enjoyable read for any daddy or daughter! I didn't have a great relationship with my dad and learned so much from this book. It's helped me to forgive and reconcile with him, as I understood we all make mistakes. My dad and I thank you authors for helping us get past the past!
Shallow.......1998-11-12
As a new father of a beautiful baby girl, I awaited delivery of this book with a great deal of anticipation. As soon as it arrived, I put aside the paperback I had been working on. Too bad for me. This book starts out promisingly enough. The first section (dealing with birth and early childhood) is kind of neat. But, as the book progresses (through the school years and adulthood), I found myself becoming more and more discouraged. The mostly dysfunctional father/daughter relationships did nothing for me. In fact, several of the anecdotes really disturbed me. The book becomes more of a downer with each page. I ultimately set it aside and did not finish it. To the authors - nice try, but, in my opinion, you did not do what you set out to do. Instead of touching stories of the unique bond between fathers and daughters, you presented a series of Inside Edition-like stories. I don't see the point.
Book Description
A Compendium of the redoubtable Soldier, fencing master, and prize fighter DONALD McBANE's Expert Sword-Man's Companion, late Deputy-Governour of Edinburgh Castle and celebrated Sword-man Sir WILLIAM HOPE's New Method ofFencing, and PAUL WAGNER's fine essay GAELIC SWORDSMANSHIP. The Scottish Highlander has been romanticized in poetry, song and legend, immortalized in the figures of Bonnie Prince Charlie and Rob Roy. His reputationas a fierce fighter and deadly swordsman was more than a myth however: a proud tradition of Scottish fencing masters taught the use of the backsword, smallsword, target and dirk in the 17th-19th centuries. From the 'Anglicized' upper-class Sir William Hope to the bawdy soldier-turned-fencing master Donald McBane, who ran his fencing salon out of his wife's brothel, these masters were as colorful and diverse as the Scottish people themselves. In this omnibus edition, Mark Rector presents these classic manuals of Scottish swordsmanship from the days of Culloden. MARK RECTOR is a founder of the Chicago Swordplay Guild and an Associate Director of the Swordplay Symposium International. Contributors: PAUL WAGNER is a founding member of the Stoccata School of Defence in Sydney, Australia; PAUL MACDONALD is founder and Director of the British Federation for Historical Swordplay; MILO THURSTON is the founder of the Linacre School of Defence.
Customer Reviews:
No WAY This Terrific Book Deserves Two Stars!!!.......2007-04-13
To help counterbalance the misleading review from October, 2005, this is a terrific book on swordsmanship. The costuming might not be completely accurate, but that's hardly the point of the book.
One would be hard-pressed to argue against the text of the manuals themselves, as they were written in period, at least one of them by a man (Donald MacBane) who had to rely repeatedly for his very life upon the skills set forth in the manual. The interpretations of the authors seem spot on with the text. Overall, I would say that this is an excellent introduction to the ways in which the basket-hilted broad- and backswords were actually used in mortal combat.
I hardly think the editors were unaware that a "Highlander" was a "Scottish Gael." The simple fact is that the manuals contained in this book were written by lowland scots, and the "Highland" in the title is used for marketing. If you own or are thinking of getting a baskethilt, chances are you've either already purchased or are planning to purchase the kilt to go with it; simply put, "Highlanders" sell nowadays (if you need help deciding what sort of kilt would be most appropriate, the review I've mentioned lists several good sources for info). "Lowland Swordsmanship" just doesn't have the same ring to it.
The fact that these were lowland scots also explains the quotes in scots sprinkled throughout the book. That these passages are in scots and not gaelic is hardly an "omission;" they're as gaelic as the authors of the period texts they're printed with. Which is to say, not at all.
To fault this book because it doesen't contain little snippets in the language most common to the geography of the title, or because the reenactors wear the wrong clothing, is as absurd as faulting a cookbook filled with good recipes because the china patterns in the pictures aren't right. Is it an accurate observation? Sure. But it has absolutely nothing to do with the purpose of the book. It's a book on swordsmanship, not linguistics or costuming, and as a book on swordsmanship, it's quite good.
"Highland Swordsmanship" is well worth both purchasing and studying, as is the sequel, "Highland Broadsword," and I hope there are more volumes by these folks in the works. I'd give it six stars if I could.
Excelent work.......2007-03-20
This book is a wonderful representation of two old Scottish sword manuals. The information is abundant and clear. These works deal primarily with the small sword, the most commonly carried sword at that time; however, many of the Scottish weapons are represented.
Well written with good illustrations, I highly recomend this book.
Omitted.......2005-10-12
I have two problems with this book however meritorious the descriptions of swordsmanship.
The enactors are frequently pictured wearing a 'little kilt' (fèileadh beag) with knife-edge pleats to portray Highland dress of the mid-eighteenth century. During the period of the 1745 rebellion, the 'big kilt' (fèileadh-mòr) was essentially a large blanket rolled about the body and belted in the middle. There was no flat apron in the front and the kilt didn't necessarily open on right side. The standardization of the modern kilt is due to regulations of Highland regiments in the 19th/20th centuries.
I suggest anyone interested in the topic read:
Hugh Cheape's 'Tartan',
J.Telfer Dunbar's 'History of Highland Dress,
Christian Hesketh's 'Tartans', or
McClintock' & Dunbar's 'Old Irish and Highland Dress'.
The editor seems to be unaware that 'Highlander' is synonymous with
'Scottish Gael'; that is, the first language of Highlanders is Gaelic, not Scots English.
The book would have been enriched with quotes from J.L. Campbell's 'Highland Songs of the Forty-Five', contemporary Jacobite songs in the original Gaelic with English translations, or Ronald Black's 'An Lasair', also bilingual.
A very interesting resource for writers.......2003-10-13
This books is a wonderful resource for writers or reinactors. It pays ode to the romanticising of Scottish fighters such as Rob Roy, Wallace, The Bruce and Bonnie Prince Charlie, but goes past these legendary images to show you the reasons for certain practices. It covers the basics of offence and defence, especially in the fencing techniques of the 17th through 19th centuries. I do wish I would have covered the medieval aspects of Highland swordsmanship: The Claymore. The movements for using the longest two handed sword is wonderful to see in action, so I had hoped this book would cover that.
Lots of diagrams and photos so the non fencer can follow precisely what they are demonstrating.
Very detailed in who did what in duels, the protocol and history.
All in all a very good work.
A good book!.......2002-06-20
Mark Rector has put together an interesting volume that serves both as a historical reference to old Scottish swordplay, and a guide to those individuals interested in the recreation of old styles of sword combat. Happily, it is also easy to read, and nicely illustrated. As the author of "THE ART AND SCIENCE OF FENCING," "THE INNER GAME OF FENCING," and "THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE SWORD," and the editor/publisher of "FENCERS QUARTERLY MAGAZINE," I recommend this book.

Book Description
The European explorers who dared to face the perils of the unknown have in recent times become shrouded in controversy. No longer esteemed as heroes, except in their homelands, these bold explorers are now seen as purveyors of disease, destruction and slavery whose only interests were finding gold, becoming famous, and spreading their religious beliefs. But, as the author of this work points out, these explorers broke down long-standing myths and broadened the world's horizons.
Beginning with Prince Henry the Navigator's worldly vision of finding a direct sea route to India and concluding with Ferdinand Magellan's quest to be the first man to sail around the world, this work tells the collective story of the numerous explorers who sought to find a path to the exotic spices and other treasures of the Far East. Most of the explorers included in this work were of the same generation and several of them even sailed together. The book also examines the political, social and economic factors that ushered in the age of exploration and had such an impact upon the explorers.
