The Annotated Arch: History of Architecture.......2006-03-19
I am teaching Art History and AP Art History this year and this book is invaluable to my students and myself. The students do a seminar type class and this book has provided invaluable help to them when they have one of the artworks to research and teach. The large oversized pages are excellent. I am so glad that I found this invaluable tome.
Everything you ever wanted to know about architecture & more.......2003-12-01
This book is jam-packed with information, presented in a fascinating, readable manner. The introductory chapter explains the elements of architecture which helps the reader appreciate the extraordinary buildings humans have created through the ages. The chronological progression of the rest of the book's chapters highlights major trends and developments in building styles and materials, demystifying the origins of many of today's structures. The book is just as easy to read straight through, as it zooms along through the history of architecture "from the Stone Age to the Space Age," as it is to locate a topic of particular interest and to start there. The glossary and extensive index make it easy to quickly learn about any one subject, building, or architect, and the numerous sidebars and timelines help the reader understand the context in which a building was created.
The beautiful pictures and interesting stories bring you right to the doorstep of humanity's greatest achievements. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has ever wondered why a building is considered special, and think it would be a terrific present as well. Enjoy!

Book Description
In eighteenth-century France, the ability to “lose oneself” in a character or scene marked both great artists and ideal spectators. Yet it was also thought this same passionate enthusiasm, if taken to unreasonable extremes, could lead to sexual deviance, mental illness, and even death. Women and artists were seen as especially susceptible to these negative consequences of creative enthusiasm—and women artists doubly so.
Mary D. Sheriff uses these very different visions of artistic enthusiasm to explore the complex interrelationships among creativity, sexuality, the body, and the mind in eighteenth-century France. Drawing on evidence from the visual arts, literature, philosophy, and medicine, she scrutinizes the different forms of deviance ascribed to male and female artists. Sheriff also demonstrates that the perceived connections among sexuality, creativity, and disease also opened artistic opportunities for women—and creative women took full advantage of them.

Book Description
The freely nude body and nature just seem to go together, and this lushly designed guide--aimed at professional, keen amateur, and student photographers--reveals the many facets of lighting nude photography outdoors. High-quality color and black-and-white images, drawn from a range of contemporary international photographers, demonstrate a variety of beautiful effects, all using the sun as the principal light source. See how to make the most of light and form, create a mood, and situate the figure within the landscape. Each spread is self-contained, with one or two images illustrating a specific topic, such as working in shade or using flash. The accompanying text explains the background behind these pictures, illuminating the thought processes of the photographers and detailing how composition and location are used to fine effect. Lighting plans, including a diagram of the sun's position and information on any supplementary devices (such as a reflector), will be invaluable for anyone trying to achieve similar results.

Home Run!.......2005-12-02
Outdoor Lighting: Nudes - Cathy Joseph
Anyone who read my review of Cathy Joseph's book, `Outdoor Lighting: Fashion & Glamour' knows that I instantly became a Cathy Joseph groupie. That was the photography book that I would have written if only I had talent.
So I was overjoyed when the publisher AVA Photography notified me that Cathy Joseph had written two additional books in the series, `Outdoor Lighting: Nudes' and `Outdoor Photography: Portraits'. Immediately I ordered both from Amazon.com.
I was performing that twice yearly ritual here in the Midwest (converting the lawn tractor from mowing to snow-blowing duty) when the books arrived. Grimy from rolling around on the garage floor... cursing at stubborn bolts and the like, I ran into the house anxious to see if Joseph and AVA could deliver that second most difficult task in publishing, writing a sequel that won't disappoint (the first most difficult task in publishing appears to be writing a valuable photography book in the first place!).
The same team that delivered a home run with `Outdoor Lighting: Fashion & Glamour' also created `Outdoor Lighting: Nudes' and Ms Joseph is kind enough to acknowledge them: Sarah Jameson for finding the photographs used in the book and Gavin Ambrose for the book design. This is definitely an All-Star team.
Blessedly, this team doesn't wander far from the formula that worked so well in the Fashion and Glamour book. Back is the raw technical data for nearly every image. Included also for each image is a brief on: The Concept, The Location, Composition, Lighting and Technique. This is again, a book written for photographers! Amen.
And, in a nice change from our technology obsessed culture, Ms Jameson found, and Ms Joseph used, wonderful images cheerfully made by a cheap camera which `some people call the worst camera ever made'. Most of the photos shown here were made using only the sun, very few with complicated lighting setups. You get the idea, this is a book that celebrates the image above all.
And what wonderful images they are! This book celebrates the human body, artistically photographed. There is nudity here yes, pornography, no. Ms Jameson found wonderful images, and they are used to great effect by Ms Joseph. Because of this book I've discovered a new idol in photography, Arnold Henri. His images are stunning and provocative. Check out his images throughout the book, but especially on page 114.
Is there anything at all wrong with this book? A little. Ms Joseph so spoils us that, like a perturbed child, I pout that there is no detail on the wonderful photographs that start each chapter. I want details! You've hooked me, now give them to me! That said, there is more useful information in this one book than in an entire library of most photography books.
The bottom line? As I said about `Outdoor Lighting: Fashion and Glamour' also, this book WILL make you a better photographer.
So? While I realize that the Swiss/British publisher and the British writing team of this book probably won't appreciate the analogy, this one too, clears the fences. Let's just say that this is a sequel that certainly doesn't disappoint.
Well done.
Buy it.
Now, can this great team deliver in the third title in this series, `Outdoor Photography: Portraits'? You'll just have to wait to find out... back to the tractor!
Disappointing.......2005-04-22
The cover photo by Eric Boutilier-Brown is one of the best images shown. While this book may be helpful to the beginning photographer of outdoor nudes, I found the lighting information to be very basic. The selection of mostly color images is largely uninspiring, and includes a number of kitschy photos that may look fine on someone's web page, but hardly belong in a book. There are a few truly excellent images, but they are not worth the price of the book in my opinion.
For lovers of all that is truly natural........2004-06-08
What is more natural than the human body in natural light? For those who love to use natural light to bring out the best of the human form, this book is a godsend. Amazing pictures and the tools on how you can re-create similar pictures for yourself. What more could you ask for. A third book in this series maybe? Cathy, are you reading this?

VERY ENTERTAINING.......2007-01-09
I found the overall quality to be very good. The only way I would improve it would be to have either Basil Rathbone or Nigel Bruce do the reading.
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes-The Red Headed League.......2000-03-30
My review for this story is that i really like this book alot. The two best things about this story is the suspense and mystery ,you can't wait to see what happens next.I also like the way the detective the hero Mr. Holmes always finds out what happens.
Book Description
"To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman," says Watson of Irene Adler in A Scandal in Bohemia. "In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex." Holmes and Watson are hired by the King of Bohemia to purloin an incriminating photograph. But in one of his few failures, Holmes's best plans are beaten by Irene Adler's brilliance. In The Redheaded League, Holmes is engaged upon two seemingly unrelated cases, a daring bank robbery and the disappearance of a pawnbroker's assistant. Using minute details of the small mystery, he is able to solve the larger one. "Depend upon it," says Holmes to Watson in A Case of Identity, "there is nothing so unnatural as the commonplace." Holmes is as fascinated by the story of a common young woman whose groom has vanished on the way to the altar as he has been by the woes of kings. He sharpens his powers of detection by putting together scattered facts to form a powerful and unexpected accusation. Holmes tells Watson about one of his first cases, The Musgrave Ritual; one that helped make him famous. Two servants of an English nobleman disappear. By following a trail of obscure clues left behind in an old parchment, Holmes discovers the crown of a former King of England.

bradley's review.......2003-10-23
This book was great!!! It left with cliff hangers that made me keep wanting to read more!!! It was one of those books that you could not put down. The plot of the book was there was a man named Mr Jamez Wilson. One day he had applied for a job in the red headed league. Thins job was only open to those men who had red hair. Mr Wilson was a red headed mad so he applied for the job, along with the thousands of others. This job was an easy one. You get payed a lot for only doing a little job like copping down an encyclopedia. Everything went fine for about eight weeks or so until one day when Mr Wilson went to work it was closed down. Mr Wilson had asked the townspeople and no one has even heard of that before. Mr Wilson was confused, so he went to Mr Holmes a very famous detecive to solve this case. Mr Holmes was waiting in a celler full of money on night because he thought it was spusious. The next thing you knew the door opend! You'll have to read to find out what happend after that!

As far as we know, plants and animals don't do it. Worry is a human "skill." And it comes in different forms. Some kinds indicate diagnosable conditions, such as depression, or Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Others, such as shyness, are built in from birth, and some seem plain old existential--stemming from broken trust or loss of faith. But worry is uniquely human. "To create worry," Dr. Hallowell writes, "humans elongate fear with anticipation and memory, expand it in imagination and fuel it with emotion. The uniquely human mental process called worrying depends upon having a brain that can reason, remember, reflect, feel, and imagine. Only humans have a brain big enough to do this simultaneously and do it well."
Illustrating his theories with the personal stories of and dialogues with clients, Hallowell provides a full picture of the ordinary yet chronic worry-problems. Thus, each presenting problem is dramatically rendered, and the ensuing therapies practically understood. Hallowell emphasizes the physical, not the psychological aspect of worrying, which helps stop the cycle of self-blame many worriers are prone to. When worry is no longer identified as a lack of moral courage, for example, but a natural phenomenon, it can begin to be managed.
The steps set forth in Worry: Controlling and Using It Wisely are practical and straightforward. First comes awareness, which, over time, sets the stage for new patternmaking in the brain. An entire chapter is devoted to methods of running interventions on worry without medication. Worry offers an articulate and powerful reframe of a debilitating condition that's as old as the human brain. By releasing the deeply entrenched habit of negativity, a worrier can step out of the cycle, and freed from phobia, move ahead.
Book Description
From the co-author of the best-selling Driven to Distraction, here is the first book to focus on the many forms of worry (both destructive and productive), their underlying causes, and how these patterns of thought and behavior can be changed.
Worry consumes time and energy, too often isolates us from friends and family, and prevents us from solving the real problems that are behind the act of worrying. Dr. Edward M. Hallowell makes clear the crucial distinctions among the various forms of worry, showing which are protective and productive, which handicap achievement and pleasure, and which seriously threaten physical health and mental balance. He explains which forms of worry are rooted in inborn predispositions, which arise from misguided attempts to cope with the stresses of daily life, and which are symptomatic of other problems, such as depression or attention deficit disorder. In each case he maps out the most effective strategies for change--psychotherapy, medication, innovative methods of retraining the brain--many of which the chronic worrier can pursue on his or her own.
Filled with illuminating case histories, anecdotes, and practical guidance, this is an invaluable aid to understanding and coping with one of the most common and debilitating but least understood states of mind.

Very Interesting.......2007-06-29
I am very impressed with this book so far. I have not gotten very far but I am intrigued by this book so far.
Help for the common man and woman.......2002-12-13
I picked up Dr. Hallowell's book about three years ago. I was in a horrible job with a demanding and verbally abusive boss and thought I had died and gone to Hell. On more than one occasion I seriously considered driving my car into a tree just to avoid having to go to work another miserable day. I was in counseling with a psychologist at the time who, though quite a funny guy, was of no help to me. I worried about a lot of things. I worried about everything: how to survive in a rotten job; how to regain joy in my life with my wife and newborn son; how to stop self-destructive behaviors; how to get back my lost sense of humor. I was, needless to say, desperate! Then, while browsing through the "Self-help Section" of the bookstore, I was grabbed by the title of Dr. Hallowell's book: "Worry". I bought the book and read case studies all about myself. People who suffered exactly like I did. I learned that I wasn't a failure. I wasn't crazy. I wasn't destined to live out the rest of my life as a miserably unhappy man. I talked about the book with my wife and told her I thought I was depressed and really needed help. I went to a psychiatrist who said I was suffering from Major Depression. He prescribed medication and long term therapy. The change in me was dramatic. I felt better, mentally and physically, enjoyed my family, regained my sense of humor, and, best of all, I quit my job. Of course I found another job and I'm still in therapy. I'm no longer depressed. This book literally saved my life.
very informative book on worry.......2002-07-02
I was very happy that I bought this book. As a person who suffers from worry/anxiety (learned from the best of them....my mother) I turned to this book to help me understand the reasons behind worry and what can be done to help the person suffering from it. Dr. Hallowell does an incredible job discussing the different forms of worry (including the differences between good and bad worry), the possibility of genetic reasons, how worry fits in with other mental illness (depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder), etc. He then talks about the different ways that worry can be dealt with. I was pleasantly surprised to see that he is not an advocate of just giving medication. He discusses a well-rounded approach of therapy, medication (if necessary), and things a person can do on their own. He discusses the various types of medication and how they work with different types of mental illness. The last part of the book talks about various things a person can do to help themselves deal with worry.
Overall I think this is a wonderful book. It is definitely a great starting point for those who know they have a problem but are unsure of how to start dealing with it.
I completely disagree with the reviewer who said this book would not be good for learning how to deal with worry. Its as if they were reading a completely different book than I did.
If you feel you worry too much, you might like this book.......2002-03-24
"Worry" by Edward Hallowell is an excellent self-help book to read for people who feel they worry too much. It is also great introduction to the academic and clinical treatment of worry.
"Worry" teaches us that people, by evolutionary design, worry. Worry results from the combination of fear and the ability to create abstract thoughts. Worry is the natural result of combining "What if?" with fear. Fear, like pain, is a natural mechanism to protect people.
It was smart to be afraid of the Saber-toothed tiger that was looking at you. It told you that you had a problem to deal with. We are wired for fear as Hallowell writes. People without any fears tend not to live long under dangerous environments.
Yet, as humans developed more sophisticated brains, which gave us other adaptational survival advantages, we naturally started thinking about what could go wrong in our lives. We began worrying and became somewhat neurotic as a species.
Now some worry is natural and good, but Hallowell discusses "toxic" worry, where one worries relentlessly about something that probably should be given less thought than it is receiving.
The book gives great practical advice for dealing with worry, such as sharing your concerns with others, and exercise. Exercise tends to divert the mind from its worries and helps the mind deal with worry.
Also, Hallowell points out the obvious, but often-overlooked things we can do to reduce our worry about some such thing. For example, getting the facts about the thing that concerns us, and then taking some action to overcome the lurking danger that is concerning us. Certainly, this beats endlessly ruminating on our fears.
For most people, the chapter "The Management Of Worry Without Medication" will be the most useful.
Hallowell writes that we should try to distinguish between toxic worry and the healthy variety and just as we feel ourselves becoming enmeshed in toxic worry, we should do something to reset our mind by doing something that distracts us from the worry. Again, exercise is an example.
The discussion of the relationship between worry and genetics is very interesting as is learning that worry adversely affects our bodies. Hence, the label of "toxic."
Finally, a clinical psychologist after my own heart, Hallowell suggests saving money for a rainy day and not doing things that you know to be wrong.
This book also mentions more extreme solutions such as Prozac and cingulotomy (that's a lobotomy, in case you're wondering) Did we mention this is not just another feel-good self-help book? Hallowell is a senior lecturer at Harvard Medical School. Plus he's a really good speaker.
If you feel you might have a problem with worry, this book is probably the best book on the subject. It will give you an easy-to-read introduction to worry, great tips for overcoming your worries and will help you decide if you need professional help for your worries. Don't worry, read this book and be happy.
Peter Hupalo, Author of "Becoming An Investor"
A multimodal approach to worry.......2001-01-05
I found this book extremely practical and helpful. Dr. Hallowell describes different types of worry and explains the various approaches for working to curb worry. Dr. Hallowell is honest in that worry cannot be cured -- only managed. Dr. Hallowell comes up with a variety of approaches for worry including medical and non-medical. I am sending a copy of this book to all the worriers in my own family!

His guide to controlling worry draws upon a broad array of practices, involving not only meditation and psychotherapy, when appropriate, but also proper diet and sufficient sleep. And yet Hallowell, whose style is straightforward, engaging, and even conversational at times, is nothing if not pragmatic. A concluding chapter recommends everything from trying Kundalini yoga to buying insurance.

I purchased this item as a gift for a friend. I was disappointed that the book is a soft cover not a hard cover as described.
Although the information within is the same whether hard or soft cover, the book was intended as a long lasting reference guide for him. Soft covers don't hold up as well.
He was still pleased with the book.
Book Description
Set within a chronological framework, this stimulating new study explores the history of Germany from the end of the Second World War and the legacy of the Third Reich through to the present day. Drawing on recent research and newly available evidence of the post-Cold war era, Klaus Larres provides a comprehensive analysis of the most important domestic and external aspects of contemporary Germany since 1945, including the Occupation, the effects of the Cold War, and the excitements and complexities of reunification in 1989/90. Larres then looks beyond this landmark event to Germany's role within European integration, her developing relationship with the USA, the relocation of the seat of government to Berlin, and the domestic and foreign policies of the red-green coalition led by Gerhard Schroder and Joschka Fischer.
