DEFINING THE PRACTICE OF ARCHITECTURE FOR STUDENTS
client business delivery services
The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice has been a definitive guide to architectural practice for almost a century. Now this student edition, which has been carefully adapted from the Thirteenth Edition of the Handbook, gives students vital access to the cutting edge of the profession-with essential information on how architects are managing the change from product-based practices to those that are knowledge-based and service-oriented.
Reviewed by a group of leading architectural educators, this edition distills material from the professional edition to provide a compact and convenient reference for students. In addition, it contains an overview of the architectural profession and the NCARB Intern Development Program guidelines.
Addressing the growing importance of the client as a key participant in the practice equation, this student edition features a new section devoted to clients and client-architect relationships. Subsequent sections on business, delivery, and services offer a wealth of crucial "redefinition" knowledge and tools used to design, build, and maintain a successful practice -from business planning and project management to the development of expanded, added-value services. Also included are electronic samples of the AIA contract documents (more than 75 in all) on a companion CD-ROM.
Bringing together the experience of experts from architecture as well as law, business, and other professions, the student edition of The Architect's Handbook of Professional Practice is an important resource to help prepare students for high-quality professional practice. In a convenient book/CD-ROM format, it offers tomorrow's architects the information they will need to meet the changing demands of the marketplace with insight and confidence.

Customer Reviews:
Don't bother.......2007-08-18
There are many good silversmithing books out there, this is not one of them.
For all the potential this book had it didn't live up to my expectations. Many of the pictures were of unfinished or poorly finished work, things out of round, rough edges. Fundamental bits of knowledge were left out. It seemed poorly researched and rather hastily thrown together. The tone alternates between sophomoric and pedantic.
Was this a vanity publication? There is no information about the education or background of the author.
If I had the opportunity to look through this book in a bookstore I'd never have bought it. This seems to be an example of someone who might have graduated from a university metalsmithing program and is trying to make a name for herself.
There are photos of work from well known metalsmiths which serve to redeem the book a bit...a little bit.
If you're looking for a book on silversmithing I recommend Feingold & Seitz, more expensive but worth the money.
Modern forging.......2007-05-20
This is an inspiring book and makes forging look easy. The book begins with simple pieces to gain technique, gaining complexity as one develops the skill and familiarity in working with silver. There are descriptive details accompanied with imagery for each stage of the forging process. For the novice such as myself I picked up quite a few tips and an understanding of how to begin working the silver. The designs the authors provide are modern and useable in daily life.

Customer Reviews:
cause AND effect, finally.......2006-09-05
Brad Hinkel is more than a photoshop jock; he's a real teacher. He isn't interested in producing another--even larger--photoshop manual. Instead, he distills the almost infinite number of choices and options photoshop embodies into a coherent body of knowledge that is both useful and expansive. Bewildered by the numerous ways to change brightness in photoshop? Brand Hinkel tells you which one is best and, most importantly, why. His ability to get below button-pushing for effect mode into easily understood explanations of principles and terms (of pixels, of how the grey point slider affects the entire histogram, of why 255 is the highest value in photoshop scale) is the great gift of this book. It allows the reader to understand not only the effect of buttons, but also the causal mechanisms rendering those effects. The concentration on effect at the expense of cause is the gaping hole in most photoshop manuals, which have evolved primarily from software demonstrations. It's easy to see that Hinkel's book derives from classroom experience, where the why's can't be overlooked. The result is a way of learning as well as of knowing, a book for students in the deepest sense of the word.
The only reason this book received four stars is the unusual number of typos. This is unfortunate, because the production quality of the the book (especially paper stock) is quite high (though some of the pallete illustrations are a bit small). Like many people my age, I learned much of what I know about photography from Focal Press publications. It's great to see them back in the forefront of instructional manuals, but that doesn't make skimping on proofreading acceptable. Focal Press could do better and has.
Best book on general photo editing with CS2.......2006-07-17
The book gives great step by step advice on editing most types of photography and mostly the author also explains why he chooses this way and not another way that some other authors suggest, instead of just saying this is the best way. I liked the colored examples that illustrate the text and make it easier to understand. There are lots of pros so let's get to the few contras:
What I didn't like was that some of the more interesting topics were only available on his homepage (pdf download) and that he skips certain topics. For example he doesn't give clear information on the TIFF saving options which can lead to people chosing the wrong compression or Mac users might save their TIFF files for Macintosh and can't open them in the copyshop/printshop. He just says, "Don't change these options." instead of explaining them or at least saying which is the standard option (not clear if more than one person uses the computer and the last way of saving is set as new standard).
Also some of the most important ways to make selections were not mentioned. Yet I think it's the best basic book on the topic, I've read about 20 so far and I recommend this one for beginners who know the basic tools and understand how layers work. All books have some disadvantages this one has the least.
great guide for the novice.......2006-04-16
I want to stress first: Brad Hinkel has put together the perfect concise introduction to Photoshop CS2. He speaks directly to the reader in a personal style and I really appreciate the informal, friendly tone of the book. He generously shares with the reader the best part of his knowledge and experience.
In looking for a book I was wary of the many "encyclopedias" available at the bookshops. This is a detailed Photoshop book that is NOT an encylopedia. You can actually carry it around conveniently.
Even (especially) if you're a computer savvy person like me but unaware of the intricacies of Photoshop, this is the perfect book.
Thank you Brad Hinkel!
A valuable, concise introduction to Photoshop.......2006-03-17
It is hard to believe that a book this concise will be of any use.
Surely it won't contain enough information?
Well it does! The book swiftly takes you through the basics of the tools, commands and filters using a wealth of illustrative material, all presented in an attractive easy to read manner.
For anyone wishing to have a quick but useful introduction to Photoshop I would recommend this as a good place to start.
Great book for a beginner.......2005-11-28
First I must disclose that I know Brad personally and we teach at the same non-profit organization. So this means 2 things -- one, you could consider my review biased because of personal familiarity; or two, becasue I know Brad, I know the quality of his teaching ability, his knowledge of subject matter, his enthusiasm for digital photography, and his ability to talk and write in plain English. I hope readers will consider #2 as the dominant reason for my writing this review.
I know close to nothing regarding digital photogrpahy and Photoshop in particular. I have been a film user for all my photographic life (since 1977), and I have always preferred the wet darkroom for black & white, and platinum/palladum printing. So when I decided to start learning Photoshop I bought several books, but they were all too advanced for me and they did not provide a foundation of knowledge and theory to help me understand how to begin. I came across Brad's book on Amazon and decided to purchase it because it seemed to be just what I needed. I was right. It is organized well and it is written in plain English. It flows logically from the Introduction to advanced techniques chapter. The book also gave me a good introduction to color management theory and practice -- something I never studied. I especially like the book's emphasis on developing a workflow in Chapter 3, and Brad is very generous in sharing his ideas and approach to a reliable image-editing workflow . The information in the chapter on workflow is provided in a clear step-by-step fashion. The Fourth chapter covers how to print images and it gives good information about color management and steps for printing a final image. The fifth chapter provides information about advanced techniques for blendiing layers, tonal adjustments, color correction, B&W image management, and filter effects. There are many photographs and images provided to illustrate the points emphasized in the book. This is a book you will want to return to when you are looking for answers to questions, are unsure of what you are doing, and trying to decide what to do next. This book was a pleasure for me to read and it gave me a solid foundation from which to begin my experimentation with Photoshop. Finally, the book is lightweight and a nice size for handheld reading and for keeping next to you while working on your computer. In all, this book is highly recommended!

FUN FOR A GIRL OR A BOY.......2005-08-03
I liked the NARUE anime, so I figured I'd check out the manga, and I must say that overall, it's a pretty close match.
Much of the dialogue, even the camera angles, have been similar between the manga and anime in the first three volumes. And, although this particular volume has its serious moments, the humor, when it finally does poke it's head out like a turtle, explodes off the page!
And don't get thrown by the subtle use of flashbacks and flashforwards, either ... just hold on for the ride, especially since the jokes usually pay off rather well. Best of all, the humor generally springs directly from the plot or characters, and isn't just shoe-horned in for a cheap laff.
What can I say? If you liked the anime, you'll probably groove on the manga.

In recent years, the importance of preconception health care and preparation has become more widely recognized. In Healthy Parents, Better Babies, authors Francesca Naish and Janette Roberts present a strong case for creating "better" babies by encouraging parents to rigorously and proactively improve their health through nutrition and supplements, exercise, and stress control. Naish, a naturopath, herbalist, and hypnotherapist who runs a natural fertility clinic in Australia, and Roberts, a clinical nutritionist, combine forces to instruct potential parents (yes, dads, too!) on ways to detoxify their bodies, clean up their local environment, and improve their reproductive health. At least four months before conception is attempted, the authors stress, potential parents should focus on their health. Healthy Parents, Better Babies occasionally resorts to scare tactics. The authors describe, for instance, a healthy child born to parents who followed their preconception plan and then contrast that story with the story of a woman who did not detoxify her body, suffered a terrible pregnancy and birth, and whose child suffered from colic, irritability, bad skin, allergies, bed wetting, and learning disabilities as a result. Beyond the sometimes heavy-handed message, however, is an invaluable guide to nutrients, herbs, and a super-healthy diet. --Ericka Lutz
Customer Reviews:
Not recommended for the anxiety- and guilt-prone........2004-08-29
As someone interested in herbal medicine to supplement standardized medical guidelines for preconception wellness, I gave this book a try. The prologue's "Two Stories-With and Without Preconception Health Care," sets the fear-planting, extremist tone that runs through much of the advice. The authors compare the outcome for two hypothetical couples, and the "bad" parents (meaning the ones who don't follow their regimen) encounter numerous disturbing consequences for their child, like "he is clumsy and accident-prone."
Some of the authors' suggestions seem complicated (and unnecessary?) to pursue, like sending away a hair sample for a trace analysis that must be performed by a lab. One section I did appreciate discussed flexibility and yoga poses. The illustrations and instructions were clearly written and don't seem too challenging.
Overall, the authors' preachy tone was a huge turnoff for me. My friend who browsed through my copy after recently delivering a healthy girl was appalled by this book - she felt like the writers connect blame on a mother for not having their "ideal" vision of a baby and the delivery.
Excellent source!.......2002-07-22
I found this book to be an excellent resource to use while preparing for conception. Most of all, I found the dietary information to be very valuable. The information in this book really defines the importance of good basic health and how it relates to the conception period (and to your growing baby once you're pregnant). We followed the dietary advice and we were pregnant on the first try!!! It was a very easy read and I encourage all to read it, everyone can benefit from it.
worked for us!.......2002-03-08
We may not be perfect candidates for this book, but all I can say is, we adopted many of the guidelines (especially diet and timing ovulation) and got pregnant on our first try! We had no known fertility problems and we're in our 30's - but we were interested in creating an optimal environment for conception to take place. I especially liked that my husband had an equal role in this program. One of his "jobs" was to produce the healthiest sperm possible, which is described in detail. Now here I am, expecting our first child in a week! I would encourage anyone to give this book a try, especially if fertiltity is an issue.
excellent advice.......2001-03-20
I am studying to be a certified nutritional consultant and have been looking for a pre-conception book to recommend to future clients. Healthy Parents, Better Babies is just that book. The authors define a healthy diet in easy to understand terms and also explain and give examples of the importance of exercise and stress reduction. Much better, more accurate information than I've seen to date on parent health and it's relationship to baby's health. Naish and Roberts explain why avoiding smoking, drugs, alcohol and caffeine are so important and dedicate 7 chapters to the ways in which you and your spouse can improve your lifesyle in preparation for a pregnancy. Even if your about to begin baby #2 or #3, this book is a must. It all but guarantees an easier, healthier pregnancy this time around. The authors give you sound advice on fertility enhancement, conscious conception, a healthy full-term pregnancy (avoiding morning sickness, varicose veins, hemorrhoids, constipation, etc.), short and straightforward labor, a healthy baby (reduced incidences of colic, thrush, eczema, allergies, etc.) and successful breastfeeding. In my opinion, if you're having trouble conceiving, read this book, follow the suggestions and then try again.
This book helped us achieve a MIRACLE.............2001-02-19
We had been trying for 4 years to have a baby on our own and via hi-technology (too many medical procedures, IVF's etc to mention). I had been aware of this book for some time and decided that we needed to make a concerted effort to help OURSELVES before we started our next (and final) IVF treatment. No-one could give us any definite answers as to why we weren't pregnant, but I figured that following the advice from this book, the pre-conception care could only improve our general health and well being. Not a bad thing considering how run down we were.
Yes, at times the advice in this book sounds like tough love, but realistically it was a lot easier than being a medical experiment yet again. It isn't designed purely for couples with trouble conceiving but for those who want better babies and a better pregnancy.....
So, the success of our story is that we followed the programme in conjunction with our Naturopath and despite all the doom and gloom stories we had been told before, we have now managed to conceive our own little miracle baby, which will be due later this year. This is the ONLY thing we have done differently in 4 years and I truly believe it is the only reason we are pregnant today.
I have listed my address as both the USA (where we spent a large percentage of our time during our efforts to conceive) and Australia (where we now reside) to dispel any myths that this is a book with Aussie content that may not be suitable for those based in the USA. Whilst it may be true that Alternative Therapy practitioners may be less available (per Capita) in the US than Down Under, I would advise you to buy this book to give you some practical advice and guidance before you head off to the health food store. Self-medicating (even with herbs) can be quite dangerous so it is important to have an authoritative reference guide. There are other books available with a similar approach but none that are this thorough.....
I will also be buying Francesca's follow-up books as my pregnancy progresses......
Book Description
The Cantonist era was a terrifying episode in Jewish history, and one that is etched in the collective memory of the Jewish people. Tsar Nicholas of Russia conscripted thousands of Jewish children - some as young as 6 years old - into his army for up to 25 years! The Tsar's declared goal was nothing less than to convert these children to Christianity; for him, their baptism was of the highest priority. This book reveals the struggle of these youngsters to maintain their Judaism against impossible odds. Many failed. But some, like Golda Meir's grandfather, succeeded in reclaiming their heritage and reconnecting the chain of Jewish tradition. Today, thousands of Jews are descendants of those stalwart Cantonists.

EMIGRACJA POLITYCZNA.......2004-11-16
There is no such thing as the Polish "immigration" to America. There were Polish immigrationS. The immigration which laid the groundwork for the Polish-American community as it exists today was the great emigration of 1880-1920, people who came for economic reasons. Polish poverty and American labor needs dovetailed. The immigration from 1945-52, the "DP" (Displaced Person) immigration, was a political immigration of people who refused to return to a "Poland" that was a mere Soviet satellite. These immigrants were often well-educated professionals who felt a moral obligation to preserve the free Polish intellectual tradition (after Hitler and Stalin did their best to exterminate it). Invoking the models of a "exile mission" found in the writings of Mickiewicz and other post-1830 Uprising emigres, the "DPs" eventually came to America, added fresh blood to the Polish Diaspora in America, and kept alive faith in Poland's eventual resurrection as a truly free and democratic state. Fills an important gap. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Philosophy of science and history of science are both interpretations of scientific practice, and the relationship between these two disciplines can take various forms: they may be mutually exclusive, interdependent, or related by inclusion. Much depends on whether philosophy of science is
taken to be a prescriptive or a descriptive science. This book is concerned with the nature of the relationship between philosophy of science and history of science, and sheds new light on our understanding of those activities that comprise science.
