Book Description
Cabins are simple, sometimes primitive structures, but the heart of each cabin - a treasury of feelings, sensations, and memories of family and friends - makes them special. The Cabin presents 37 inspiring examples, showing how people are building, reclaiming, transforming, or buying this basic form of American residential architecture for a chance at the good life. The book includes 248 color photos and 50 color illustrations, site plans, floor plans, and covers the four basic styles: rustic, traditional, transformed, and modern. In the process it celebrates the possibilities and pleasures of cabins as both shelter and a way of life.
Customer Reviews:
designing my cabin.......2007-06-27
I bought this book along with a bunch of others when I bought a country home. I liked this one the best-no Architectural Digest rich people cabins that none of us can afford (or even want). This book limits the size of the cabins to a modest 1200 feet or so and focuses on the creativity of the owners. Really interesting uses of space. I have given it as a gift many times and everyone has really liked it
Beautiful Book.......2007-06-03
This is a great book with many terrific photos that will fuel your imagination and inspiration for a future small home which, in my opinion is the wave of the near future. Less is more, and this book shows you how beautiful that can be. I would recommend you leave this book on the coffee table, people always pick it up and enjoy flipping through it.
food for thought.......2006-09-06
In a nutshell, a beautiful book with gorgeous photos and plenty of ideas. In the few days that I've had it, its been used frequently to clarify and illustrate our own ideas about the cabin that we're planning. As far as I'm concerned it has paid for itself already.
Down with McMansions.......2006-07-10
God, this book is so lushly illustrated with cozy spaces and intimate hideaways that you just want to scramble for the hills after one read-through. All the houses in it are deliciously comfy and cozy, illustrating the forgotten principle of 'just enough', all look just big enough,a nd all look terribly inviting and tempting. This book is cabin porn, basically.
Invites repeated browsing.......2006-02-22
I love this book. I keep going back to it for ideas for building a summer sleeping structure for my large back yard. For people who love the outdoors and are drawn to the concept of living structures which invite the outdoors inside and vice versa, this book is full of inspiration. There is something for everyone in this book and you would be hard pressed not to find at least one structure in this book which has you itching to pick up a hammer and a saw.

Book Description
With his inimitably idiosyncratic approach, David Collier tackles a broad range of subject matter in his first collection, from Thomas Edison's bygone phonograph machines to the lost art of hand-lettered display ads. These strips have been culled from numerous publications, including Drawn & Quarterly, The Comics Journal, and Zero Zero, and they serve as an excellent introduction to the work of this quirky and unusual talent. Features new introduction by the author.
Customer Reviews:
Slices of real life.......2001-09-25
These short historical essays in the graphic/comic form are a fine example of what this medium can do.
This is a good access point to a genre of comic books that often gets overlooked - the biography. (Because it's not all superheroes).
Collier's clear storytelling and his involvement of personal vignettes in the context of the tales makes them educational and entertaining. Most prominent comparisons in the field would be the DC/Paradox Big Books of ... (Drugs, Crime, Urban Legends). But they have various artists whereas the tales here are united by the author's enthusiasm and interest.
great current comic artist.......1999-12-17
This is a collection of Collier's pieces from his eponymous comic and elsewhere, focusing on his non-fiction naratives. Collier is a fine graphic artist, but the interplay of the visuals and the texts to create engaging and informative stories is superb. Especially fine are the pieces in which he combines a story of some historical moment-the development of reggae, the evolution of the disc record player, with his own personal framing narative. The closest comparisons I can think of are Harvey Pekar's pieces with Joe Sacco on music or literature. Overall this is a collection of a lot of the best work by an underrecognized comic artist. Highly reccomended to anyone interested in current comic art.

Book Description
Lawrence J. Dennis’s intellectual biography of John L. Childs, a leading figure in twentieth-century American educational philosophy between 1930 and 1960, traces Childs’s influence not only on education but also on midcentury politics, economics, and social issues. A disciple of John Dewey and an associate of William Heard Kilpatrick, George S. Counts, Boyd Bode, and other key figures in modern American education, Childs laid the philosophic basis for social reconstruction and became an important contributor to and interpreter of pragmatism as a philosophy of education.
Dennis describes how the Christian beliefs so central to Childs as a youth led him as a young man into a decade of YMCA missionary work in China. When he returned to the United States, Childs studied with John Dewey, later coauthoring two chapters of a book with him. Though Childs became a recognized expert on Dewey’s educational theory, he eventually became more of a reconstructionist than his mentor.
Dennis carefully recounts Childs’s long association with Dewey as well as his political activities in the American Labor Party, the Liberal Party, and the American Federation of Teachers. He likewise traces the debate about metaphysics, democracy, and indoctrination that ensued among the foremost pragmatists of the day.

Book Description
Today's prospective parents are confronted by a huge selection of guidebooks on pregnancy, birth, and early childhood, and many of them offer sensible advice and sound information that can help mothers and fathers. Nonetheless, Dr zur Linden's long-established natural care book offers an important additional dimension. In clear, accessible language he explains what newborn babies and small children need to harmoniously develop the full potential of body, soul, and spirit. Based on a broad perspective, he offers many practical suggestions.
Beginning with the growing embryo during pregnancy, the author guides the reader through the birth; the postnatal period and breastfeeding; care of newborn babies; meals for babies; and caring for children when they are sick. He includes useful sections on bottle-feeding, almond milk, and water quality.
This new edition has been expanded to include matters of contraception, drugs, a father's presence during birthing, thumb sucking, sleep, crib death, overheating, and more.
Dr zur Linden's commentary on these issues is the fruit of a lifetime of experience as a pediatrician and general practitioner. Parents will find his indications for proper care, nutrition, and raising children a real resource and support.

A Solid Atlas.......2002-08-23
It's unfair to judge this atlas purely in comparison to Esposito's work, for which it was not meant as a "replacement." This book is part of the larger West Point Military History Series, each work compiled and written for the series by numerous West Point authorities; Esposito was simply a West Point professor writing his own books, and not specifically for the series.
This atlas effectively accompanies the series' Wars of Napoleon, and is best used in conjunction with that text. But it can be a useful guide no matter what book you read. It is true that Esposito's work is more detailed, and that is deservedly the specialist's choice. But the more general reader should find this guide helpful and easier to follow, in addition to being considerably cheaper--a better deal all around.
Newer isn't always better.......1999-12-09
Anyone who has made use of Vincent Esposito's classic Westpoint Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars (or any of his other Atleses) is sure to be disappointed by this replacement in the Westpoint series. The maps are still the most detailed and complete collection readily available, but they offer no improvement over the Esposito edition. If anything, the addition of more, and brighter, colors simply detracts from the content.
Missing too is any narrative or descriptive text. In fairness, this book is meant to be a companion to a text, but dividing the description so completely from the maps precludes the two best aspects of the earlier works. First, this book is not at all suitable as a self-contained reference. Second, the old format of text-opposite-map forced the short, crisp narrative style that makes the more traditional West Point Atlases so appealing.
The scale of the maps chosen for this work is also unfortunate. Except for a few of the bigger and better known battles, the maps are on too large a scale to reflect the tactics, but too narrow a scale to show the grand tactics or strategy of the situation.
When I saw a paperback version of the Westpoint Atlas for under twenty dollars I bought it sight unseen. It now has the distinction of being the only book I have ever returned for a refund. The price was right but the book wasn't.
It turns out that the earlier Espositio edition is still available, and it is well worth the extra thrity or so dollars.

A superb historical atlas that is a seminal work and provides a comprehensive overview of the battles and campaigns between 1796 and 1815. The 169 maps chart the course of twelve crucial campaigns including Marengo, Austerlitz, and Borodino. It illustrates Napoleon's concept of war, his grasp of strategy, and his complete mastery of battlefield tactics.

Schnelle und gute Lieferung. Jeder Zeit wieder. Klasse Atlas über dieses Thema. Für mich gibt es nichts vergleibares!
THE best maps covering napoleonic campaigns-period.......2005-10-21
This is a great survey of Napoleon's campaigns, from 1796-1815. However, it is NOT a replacement for Chandler (and shouldn't be considered as such)--but it will prove an indispensable accessory to him (the maps in Chandler are scarce and terrible).
The chapters devoted to Egypt and Marengo are wonderful. And Esposito does a better job than Chandler covering the immediate post-Jena collapse of Prussian forces west of the Oder, the complex occupation of Poland; the confused, tentative moves leading to Eylau and Friedland are tremendously informative. Without Esposito/Elting I would not have been able to follow Chandler's account describing Napoleon's amazing baiting of the Russians away from his intended crossing place at the Berezina. Again in the 1814 fighting on French soil, Esposito/Elting provide a crucial resource to Chandler, whose account is hardly intelligible without plenty good maps of the river lines, their crossing points, and the principal towns.
The only places I can see for improvements would be for more maps covering Spain following 1810: the book follows Napoleon himself closely, leaving Spain in 1809 to prepare for the impending Austrian campaign, leaving behind a large portion of the Grande Armee fighting many tough battles against Wellington for 4 more years with no more coverage. Marmont's fighting in Dalmatia doesn't get much coverage, neither does Murat's own small campaigns following his accession to the Kingdom of Naples. Russian actions in Finland and the Balkans, as well as British naval activity in the Baltic are hardly mentioned.
If this book were ever reissued, and it should be, maps covering the Revolutionary era, between Valmy up to Hohenlinden and Second Zurich, would be very helpful, at least for some context on the other French commanders of the time.
If you want to really possess a fluency in Napoleon's campaigns, and already have Chandler, this book is your next, and probably only, step forward, before specializing into each individual campaign. It will probably be the first resource you reach for when you are researching any of the campaigns.
Elting's commentary delivered in his characteristic terse prose is quite engaging stylistically, in turns acerbic and humorous, always precise, clear and surprisingly spare. While the maps are hands down the selling point for this book, the commentary is excellent as well.
One of the Very Best single volume references.......2005-07-21
The Napoleonic Wars are far easier to understand for students, buffs, and even professional historians if they have this book at hand. The visuals provided by the numerous large maps are excellent and indispensible, regardless of any minor quibbling flaws.
The text is frankly francophile (sorry about the pun) but so what? Most works on the Napoleonic period come down on one side or the other. Meanwhile, the late Col. Elting's writing is concise, colorful, and descriptive. His prose was always full of wit, energy, humor, and humanity. The francophilia and vibrant writing are also apparent in the very nice annotated bibliography at the end of the book. The thing to remember is that Elting's pro-Napoleon, francophile notions informed his opinions, but did not distort or cloud his research or judgement. If forced to choose between recommending this book or the classic by Chandler, I would have to recommend this one -- although if you get both you can't go wrong. For more detailed praise and discussion of controvery surrounding this book, see the very good Kiley reviews here.
Good maps and absolutely partisan account.......2005-03-11
I agree with the other reviewers on the excellence of the maps and the thorough knowledge of the authors. However, I am amazed that nobody seems to notice the absolutely partial view of the facts that is obvious in every page of this book. Say general A advances his infantry and dislodges general B from his position. First possibility: 'The regiments of A were roughly handled by the division of B. Later B decided to retreat to a better position, which he did in a perfect order'. Possibility two: 'The regiments of A advanced in an irresistible charge, sweeping the troops of B from the field'. The difference? in the first case, A is an Austrian, Russian or Prussian general, while B is French. Of course, the opposite happens in the second case. After the tremendous defeat of Leipzig, the authors manage to return Napoleon to France a victor, because he dispersed the small army of Wrede when retiring. The tactics of the Allies are systematically presented as blundering and incoherent, while Napoleon, even at his worst moments, can do no wrong. When reading the campaign of France it seems miraculous that Napoleon was defeated, after what seems an interrupted series of victories. The allies tactic of exhausting Napoleon by a series of forced marches from one enemy to the other is never mentioned: the final reason of his defeat, of course, is Marmont's treason. After all, Napoleon said so himself. The final straw in the sorrow of the authors after Waterloo is that the French people soon lamented not to have resisted more. This is a pure invention. Surely the authors deserve the Legion d'Honneur from their efforts.
Must have book in any Napoleonic library.......2004-01-10
Probably one of the easiest to read books on Napoleonic campaigns, its also one of the easiest to understand the campaigns as well. Unlike one of the earlier reviewers, I don't think this book is superior to David Chandler's Campaigns of Napoleon which is still the standard work but this book might proves to be a great supplement. John Elting's writing flow very nicely and he says a lot in a limited space. His opinions are always reflective of the true measure of the situation and he make difficult scenes easy. This book must be a standard issue in anyone's Napoleonic library.

There is no other book like this available to the public.
By all accounts, a reasonably accurate account of the Napoleonic wars, except accompanied by an extensive set of maps that I have never seen elsewhere.
If your serious about military or Napoleonic history, try to get a copy of this atlas.
A must for all serious military history enthusiasts!.......1996-08-07
This book is the definitive reference for those interested in military history.
This book provides clear and concise information about the Napoleonic Wars.
The book is filled with detailed maps shwoing each stage of the varius battles.
General Esposito is one of the premier authors on military history.
It is no wonder why his books are the staple for West Point.

Suffers from a painfully pedantic writing style.......2006-01-25
This book tells the story of 10 battles of the Napoleonic wars, four of which deal with the Peninsular campaign. As is usual with British authors, the sample is skewed toward the Peninsular campaign, because with the sole exception of Waterloo, Portugal and Spain is where the British troops fought. And this author, like almost all other British authors, has an anti-Napoleon bias. Of the five battles chosen for inclusion in this book where Napoleon was personally present on the battlefield (Marengo, Eylau, Aspern-Essling, Berezina, Hougoumont (Waterloo), all five place Napoleon in a negative light. And yet few doubt that Napoleon was one of the greatest military minds in world history.
This book, subtitled "dramatic actions from the Napoleonic Wars" is obviously geared toward the general reader, not the scholar or specialist. And yet the book is written in the most pedantic style imaginable:
"It has been assumed from an early date that the regiment concerned was the Leopold Hussars (as early as 1801 they were described as the "Imperial Corps Leopold Toscano", but it has been conjectured that, as Otto's report merely described them as "two hussar squadrons", this identification arose from the fact that Sentkeresky was the regimental colonel, and this identification has been repeated in a number of accounts). Austrian sources indicate that the unit involved was in fact the Archduke Ferdinand Hussars, one of whose members, Rittmeister (Captain) Daniel, Freiherr Meschery de Tsoor, was decorated for the action; yet his presence would seem not to be positive proof of the participation of his regiment, as Otto's account (which spells his name "Mezery") notes that he was serving in the role of ADC rather than in his regimental capacity." (page 23)
Who really gives a damn? This sort of nonsense should be reserved for academic journals, or at the very worst, endnotes. Yet this unreadably pedantic garbage infests the book throughout. If you're going to write a book for the lay reader, then do so. If you want to write like Philip Haythornthwaite, confine your audience to academics and Napoleonic-era specialists.

One of my favorite books. Haythornthwaite-in top form here-selects consistently fascinating battles, backs his narrative with thorough research, and recounts with objectivity, grace, and awe, life and death on the battlefield. He writes with a transparent clarity that draws no attention from his subjects. And what subjects! He tells of a few major battles (Eylau and Aspern-Essling, for example), but is at his best when he delves into obscure Peninsular skirmishes. When dealing with smaller engagements, he can focus on a few individuals-we are introduced, learn a bit of them, and then watch as they are subjected to the horrors of grapeshot, musket, and bayonet. We see them pushed to the very limit of humanity and sanity-and we worry and rejoice and keen, and join with Haythornthwaite to praise and remember the valor and glory won at such a cost on the fields of Europe.
