This slim volume is vintage Buechner. Six short chapters provide a gentle challenge to meditation for those who are grieving or suffering life's distresses.

4 out of 5 stars Buechner's Jesus.......2006-11-10

Frederick Beuchner seldom dissapoints. This is true of this delightfully poetic view of Jesus' life. Based on some of the more famous pictures of Jesus by various artists, the paper back edition, while handy to have and easily portable lacks the charm of the larger hard cover original edition which contains reproductions of the art work. Typical of Buechner's immently readable style, this book delights the senses while deepening the faith.

5 out of 5 stars HIS SIMPLEST YET.......2006-01-07

Following TELLING SECRETS, this is definitely relief! Reading this biographical material as being heavier. More often his sermons surely lend a hint to his uniquely human, more emotional approach to stories of The Nativity, Ministry, Last Supper, Crucifixion, and Resurrection are quotations of his faith and theology. In the Intro to THE FACES of JESUS Fred begins "He set his face to go to Jerusalem..." One other statement of Fred Buechner's Theology comes in Resurrection, he includes words of a hymn spoken by Jesus at Acts of John. I am deeply impressed by this most mature, fascinating creation of Fredrick Buechner! Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood

5 out of 5 stars The Old, Old Stories Filled Out with Deeper Insight.......2005-09-21

Most of us learned the old, old stories of the Bible as children from our parents or in Sunday school. If we still attend church, the critical few are repeated on an annual basis. And the common scripture readings again cover these moments.

In this book these stories are again repeated. But this time they are combined with a historical view that helps to present a more human view of Jesus, one where we might can view what the man had to go through. In the section on the crucifixion for instance, he talks of how this was a Roman punishment. He adds understanding to the whipping administered beforehand. The Mel Gibson showed this most graphically. But the author points out that the condemned often died under this preliminary punishment, thus being spared the greater one to follow.

Of the crucifixion itself, the whole thing was designed to be as cruel as possible. Death often took two or three days to occur. Jesus was 'fortunate' in surviving only a few hours. And remember that in John, the people involved didn't want the event to continue so the soldiers were instructed to break the legs of the three on the crosses. This put all the weight on the arms and caused suffication to occur quickly.

This little book provides a view that fills in background information to those told in the Bible

5 out of 5 stars An experience of wonder.......2005-08-26

If occasionally you find that the stories of Jesus found in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John have become so familiar they fall flat, this book will help you experience the wonder of reading them again as if for the first time.

The faces of Jesus, his "ways of being and being seen" are illuminated in six chapters: Annunciation, Nativity, Ministry, Last Supper, Crucifixon, and Resurrection.

The focus of the faces of Jesus is that whatever else he may have been, he was a man once and had a "man's face, a human face."

        Book Description

Adult Manga looks at the rise and fall of Japan's mammoth comic industry since the 1960s. In this stimulating and refreshing work, Kinsella documents the structure and history of the manga industry, probes into its related subculture and the anti-nerd otaku panic, and examines the difficult and fascinating relationship between the artists and editors who create manga. In the process, she argues that Japanese comics have shifted from being a lower class medium for marginal citizens to become a novel form of official communication, recently embraced by big business and national institutions. This ascent of manga through various layers of postwar society reflects the wider transformation of politics and social organization in Japan during the last years of the twentieth century.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very good insight in the Manga industry.......2002-02-20

Sharon Kinsella has approached the world of Manga through a very interesting lens, linking this popular cultural trend with the industry that produces its works. Because Manga is a huge industry in Japan, with at the same time a significant economic, social and political impact on Japanese society. She studied not only the production process of a comics from the creation of the story to its printing by specific companies, but she also highlights the very peculiar relationships that bind the various entities involved in the making of mangas, with an emphasis on the interaction between editors and manga-drawers. Her study also reveals that manga seem to have become one of the favorite tools in Japan for communication, whatever the kind of message: economical and financial informations can be translated into manga format, newspaper publish manga-like political caricatures, school books can take the form of manga to be used as pedagogical means by professors,...She also dwelves on the cultural issues that Manga have raised in Japan: censorship, over-exploitation of successful mangas for big commercial hits, popular reaction to certain types of stories, the difficulties encountered by young and original artists or creative editors to pierce through the ceiling of commercial production,...

This book doesn't really go into explaining the cultural and social aspects of animes or Japanese comics, as would other books do. So you cann't really expect a detailed description of the meaning of episode x from series y or of OAV z. As the title says it (Culture and Power in Contemporary Japanese Society), she is really studying the Manga as an industrial product of mass-communication around which sociocultural relationships between the industry and the Japanese society are articulated. Personnally, I think this is one of the main strength and interest of the book. Many books do a very good job at explaining you the meaning of such or such cultural element in mangas, but I don't know of any other (doesn't mean they don't exist) that replace the manga trend in its real context: commercial and industrial mass-communication, participating in and/or suffering under the same economical globalisation of the world as other human activities.

Some people might think this is a disenchanting image of the manga world, but it isn't really. On the contrary, this book gives an exciting account of the ups and downs of manga creation, which looks, then, like a big cultural adventure.

3 out of 5 stars Way Over My Head.......2001-12-11

Lots of big words in this one... a bit too much for me to take. But I think it was a good book. I just probably wasn't good enough to read it.

        4 out of 5 stars A good read.......2001-07-08

I thought this book was a good read. I have been a fann of manga for a few years now, and read them in both english and japanese. This book was most interesting dealing with the day to day creation of manga. However, i do have to disagree with a few things. One: As it is stated above most artists are the main creative agents in their work, and two i really disagree with the categorization that Ms. Kinsella places Ah! Megami-sama and gunsmith cats into, lolicom. The female characters in both these series, except for Skuld, are young women not little girls. Maybe it is the cute style they are drawn in, but if that is the case wouldn't every series with cute characters be considered lolicom? i mean Akazukin Cha Cha and Kodomo no Omocha both have adorably cute charaters, but are definately not lolicom. . .

3 out of 5 stars The view from a manga publisher.......2001-07-06

Kinsella's book presents her view of the Japanese manga industry, as colored by her experiences inside it for a few months on a research grant from Kodansha (Japan's largest publisher). While there is much of value here, she is simply misled, mistaken, or wrong in so many other areas it is difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. For example, contrary to her assertations, very few manga are group efforts written by committee. And while it's true some editors provide plotting assistance to the creators and some are even uncredited co-writers, many are reduced to banging on the door of the artist's apartment hoping some pages will be poked out of the mail slot when the deadline comes around. Her analysis of the international manga translation industry seems to have been written without the benefit of any real research into same. Bottom line--if you know the biz well enough to separate fecal matter from boot polish, some great tidbits here. If not...don't believe everything you read.

        5 out of 5 stars A Well-Written Documentary.......2001-06-29

I read this book for two reasons. First is due to my love for anime and manga and the desire to further my knowledge for this cultural phenomenon. The second is because I'm planning on minoring in East Asian Studies, and I thought this book would give me insight as to the comparative politics concerning manga in both hemispheres of the world.

This book has done so, and more. "Adult Manga..." explains, in a well organized and detailed manner, the history of manga, from it's downfall in the 60's to its revival in the 80's. Other aspects about this book that I found very interesting were the attitudes expressed in both the western and eastern cultures. Ms. Kinsella goes on to discuss how manga has made it's place in the status-quo of the Asian region in the world, while at the same time, is struggling to makes itself known in mainstream pop-culture in America.

After I finished this book, I was enthralled by how much I was able to learn, while at the same time, I was also upset about how ignorant I was to ignore some of the most important aspects about manga concerning Japanese society. To paraphrase, manga is, more or less, a direct correllation to the social and cultural trends in Japan. How much of that statement can encompass is left to the reader.

If you think manga was just about big-breasted women, sophisticated mecha-warriors and cute furry animals, think again.

          Book Description

For two hundred years Oxford and Cambridge Universities were home to some of Britain's greatest teachers and intellects, each forming the minds of the passing generations of students and influencing the thinking and practice of university learning throughout the country and the world.

In this entertaining, informative book, Noel Annan is at his incisive best. Displaying his customary mastery of his subject, he describes the great dons in all their glory and eccentricities: who they were, what they were like, why they mattered, and what their legacy is. Written with love and wisdom, the great minds of the past—figures such as John Henry Newman, John Sparrrow, and Isaiah Berlin—are brought alive. In addition, Annan's often quoted article "The Intellectual Aristocracy" is included in this book.

No other work has ever explained so precisely and so intimately the significance of the dons and their important role in shaping higher education—at a time when the nature of learning is ever more the subject of dissension and uncertainty.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Dons Displayed.......2001-01-22

Annan provides memorable portraits of many Oxbridge dons, even as he shows how different from our own were the eras in which these men (and, far too belatedly, women) worked. For example, consider the following:

** The two opiates to be avoided at all costs were love of success and a preoccupation with money. Lowes Dickinson's most famous pupil was E. M. Forster, who in his novels tooks Dickinson's ideas a stage further; and he summarised the King's [College] ethos by saying that it was a place that "taught the perky boy that he was not everything and the limp boy that he might be something." **

Alas, this is not _our_ era . . .

The book is also packed with amusing quotes from the dons themselves, such as the following message from one don to another:

** On our return last night I found as I thought that a spider had crawled out of the inkstand over a piece of paper; but it turns out to be a hieroglyphic from which I so far interpreted as to perceive it was an invitation to meet some professor whose name as you wrote it looked somewhat indecent. I shall be happy to wait on you and take the opportunity of learning the Eyptian mode of writing. **

Annan's book is ultimately an elegy because Margaret Thatcher, among others, did so much to ruin the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge.

Praise for John Pullen's classic, The Twentieth Maine:

". . . this comes as near reliving the Civil War as anyone in the twentieth century is likely to get." --Boston Sunday Herald

"Mr. Pullen . . . has gone to the letters, diaries, and memoirs of the participants with the thoroughness and care of a good historian, and he has had the literary skill to let the personality of the regiment come through. . . ." --Bruce Catton

During the past two decades Joshua Chamberlain has emerged as a modern icon, featured in the novel The Killer Angels, the film Gettysburg, and Ken Burns's series The Civil War. Numerous biographers dissect his Civil War career, living history interpreters speak on his behalf, and even a beer bears his likeness and name. Renowned historian John J. Pullen, who first introduced Joshua Chamberlain to modern readers, is again approaching the subject of this complex man. This new biographical essay explores Chamberlain's later life through the lens of his experiences during the Civil War and examines his place in history--both man and myth.

John J. Pullen is the author of The Twentieth Maine, a modern literary classic that is still in print after 40 years. Also by Pullen: A Shower of Stars: The Medal of Honor and the 27th Maine. He lives in Brunswick, Maine.

"On the Confederate surrender at Appomattox . . . Whether or not it was a full-fledged salute, its ordering was an audacious act on Joshua Chamberlain's part, considering the actions and attitude of Congress over the next several years and the widespread grief of thousands of Northern families who had lost fathers, husbands, brothers, and sons as a result of the rebellion. But somehow, in spite of his own suffering in the war, Chamberlain had reached a higher plane, from which he saw the surrendering Southerners as part of the nation he had fought to preserve, and he was welcoming them back into a Union that in his opinion they had never left."--from Joshua Chamberlain

                            5 out of 5 stars Something Abides.......2001-05-10

Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain did not appear "ex nihilo" on 2 July 1863 at the craggy slope of Little Round Top. Neither did he disappear on 12 April 1865 following his magnanimous violation of military protocol at Appomattox Court House. In this volume, Mr. Pullen documents Chamberlain's life after the Civil War, demonstrating that the hero's character continued to illuminate all his life until his death in 1914.

Unlike Sis Deans', "His Proper Post;" Michael Golay's, "To Gettysburg and Beyond;" or Willard M. Wallace's, "Soul of the Lion," Pullen's text does not presume to be a complete biography. It does not address the question of what forces in Chamberlain's up-bringing formed such an extraordinary man.

Unlike Chamberlain's own books "Through Blood & Fire at Gettysburg," and "The Passing of the Armies;" or Michael Shaara's, "The Killer Angels," and Alice Rains Trulock's, "In The Hands of Providence," this is not primarily a book about soldiers at war.

The question that Pullen addresses is, "What becomes of the hero after the battles cease: how is courage displayed after the war ends?" In the case of Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, and other great Americans, the answer is that true heroes continue to demonstrate the same commitment to service in peace as in war. True heroes demonstrate the same integrity and courage in their chosen civilian occupations that they once showed while facing iminent death.

Forget the trendy books on leadership and values. Instead, read Mr. Pullen's book. Be inspired by the story of an exceptional leader, who demonstrated his commitment to American values until the day he died.

5 out of 5 stars Pullen has done it again!.......2000-08-21

I don't think I could say it better than the reader from Huntington, Pennsylvania - what a great review! But I agree wholeheartedly, this book allows the reader to see Chamberlain *the human* and despite his faults and frailties, he remains someone well worth admiring. John Pullen, as always, has written a very well researched and very readable book that gives one a look at the whole person. For those who are just starting to become interested in Chamberlain, this book will give you an excellent view of his later life and accomplishments (all of which were achieved despite a debilitating wound!). For those who have been Chamberlain fans for years, this book will help you get to know him even more and give you further reason to admire him.

3 out of 5 stars Solid biography about Chamberlain's later life but..........1999-09-03

Joshua Chamberlain's post-Civil-War life never reached the heights of his military exploits. John Pullen has done an excellent job researching and writing about Chamberlain after the Civil War, but, like Chamberlain's civilian life, it's not as gripping as his Civil War experiences. For die-hard Chamberlain fans and those interested in Maine's and Bowdoin's history, it's worth reading, but if it's excitement you want, read Killer Angels.

5 out of 5 stars A genuine American hero who transcends both myth and hype........1999-07-06

Joshua Chamberlain reaches through time and space and grips the imagination of all that encounter him. John Pullen, who drew back the shroud of a forgotten hero in his excellent book "The Twentieth Maine," has come full circle in this engaging and enlightening biography. Chamberlain, the hero of Little Round Top, burst upon the American culture in the film "Gettysburg." As if in answer to the question "What makes this guy a REAL hero?," Pullen has gathered the facts and presented us with both the man and the myth. Few heroes, stripped of legend, endure the light of truth. Chamberlain not only lives up to his legend: he invites further acclaim by the manner in which he lived, and the integrity of his character. John Pullen fills in the blanks of Chamberlain's postwar life, and shows us a man worth admiring. A true American hero, Joshua Chamberlain emerges unsullied, untarnished and quite human. Thank you, Mr. Pullen!

5 out of 5 stars nice addition to any traveler's bookshelf.......2005-12-19

As an expatriate and frequent traveler in the tropics, I'm interested in some of the more obscure diseases I might encounter. This book is aimed at physicians and healthcare workers, but would be a nice addition to any traveler's bookshelf. It's an excellent compendium of all (105 to be exact) the human parasites out there, some of which can be acquired in surprising ways (detailed in one of the many lists). Forty-two are distributed worldwide, and for a few others, the exact geographic distribution is unknown. The particularly scary thing about some is that they may not manifest for months, and then in some strange and mysterious form. Like the oriental lung fluke (Paragonimus), for example, which can migrate to the brain. A lot of this information is not otherwise available except in fat medical tomes, which are often outdated. In addition to useful medical information on diagnosis and treatment, the authors provide a lot of interesting "factoids," including descriptions of actual cases and outbreaks. More pictures might be nice, but that would add to the weight (it does contain many parasite life cycle drawings borrowed from the CDC). The ring-bound small format makes it easy to carry and use. I'm headed to Southeast Asia again in a couple of months and plan to pack it along with Dr. Berger's "Exotic Viral Diseases." And I won't forget to wash my hands.
