It takes only a drive through any typical American subdivision to confirm that in recent decades the average house has grown in size, narrowed in style, and shrunk in vision. Jim Tolpin's The New Cottage Home represents a return to a previous school of thought about living space: that it should be no larger than is needed, conservative of resources, rich in detail-- in short, that it should pay homage to honest architecture and fine craftsmanship, not to conspicuous consumption. The 30 cottage homes pictured, all recently built, have the slightly unfair advantage of almost magically beautiful locations, but each has a unique character and many cottage-style nooks and crannies: the converted island pump house with sod roof, the 600-square-foot woodland temple, the salvage-built house on the Kansas prairie, the off-the-grid shingled hilltop house built to take advantage of natural light. Tolpin does an excellent job of pulling together the elements of each that make it a cottage and make it appealing. In his own words, "These houses seem to call as much to the heart as to the head, enriching us more with the highs of nature than with the highs of technology. These are the new American cottages that embody the ancient storybook dream, and the kind of homes that many of us have always dreamed of living in."

Book Description

The New Cottage Home taps into today's move toward lifestyle simplicity and the idea that living space should be rich in details, conservative of resources, and no larger than necessary. Jim Tolpin celebrates the diversity and charm of 30 sample cottages, from a Pacific Northwest cottage modeled after a French hunting lodge to a "salvage yard vernacular cottage" built with junkyard materials. Each featured home reflects individual personality, priorities, and lifestyle. Whether by the water, on a mountain, or in a forest, field, or town, these homes emphasize quality of place over quantity of space.

This book is great if you want gables and a structure with more character but more expensive. I am looking for simple structures. I do like the book a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the price...........2006-02-23

As an avid cottage fan, and living in one while designing a new one to build for myself which is even more zen and simple, I found this book to be one of the best books on cottages around. Although I also admit what was considered a cottage when my place was built someone hundred years ago and what is considered a cottage in 2006 is around five square feet more in size.

Of course I am a purest and go by what my dictionary says a cottage is which is 1 : the dwelling of a farm laborer or small farmer 2 : a usually small frame one-family house. Small being reduced in size. So I was surprised that on page 112 they show a French Hunting Lodge from the Pacific Northwest. Not a cottage at all.

What does make this good sized book useful for anyone looking for ideas on cottage styles is the vast array of examples given. From the coastline of Maine to the San Juan Island of Washington State, to rural Kansas to Massachusetts to favorite areas here in California.

And wonderful examples of simple to elaborate. One of my favorites because of its really simple zen style is the Pumphouse on pages 52-59 on San Juan Island in Washington State that was made into a smooth lined, all in one cottage which I and other minimalists would love to own. Or the wonderful Salvage Yard cottage in Franklin County, Kansas on page 156-161 that would fit in just about anywhere where clean lines and environmental desires are important.

There is even an off the grid cottage and some communities of nothing but cottages like those on Lopez Island in Washington State beginning on page 196, where the cottages are part of a land trust that was set up to allow people on moderate incomes to build small abodes with common greenbelt areas in and area where expensive homes were/are the norm. Heck, this made the book worth the price in itself.

Each cottage is shown inside and out complete with basic blueprints of each cottage so one can see how the space sits and works. The photography and text meld well and makes this a book that is hard to put down.

This book hails a return to the smaller house. We have overlooked the value of coziness for too long.
Delightful! I must confess, my copy is quite dog-earred.

5 out of 5 stars great text.......2007-05-16

This is a great book. Very clear and basic. Exactly what 3D design students need. HOWEVER, it is way too pricy. AND desperately needs a new edition updated with color pictures and more current art work.

4 out of 5 stars Good Basic Sculpture Advice.......2005-10-25

This book is a good reminder of the fundamental elements that make good sculpture. The author draws from a variety of resources and includes lots of visuals. There are some project suggestions in the back of the book to allow more hands on interaction with the idea of three dimensional design. I would recommend this book for any beginner in 3D and as a good reminder for more experienced sculptors.

5 out of 5 stars Superb device.......2000-10-01

This book really got me on my feet with the whole "three dimensions" thing. Before reading this swashbuckling tale, I feel my life existed in only 2 dimensions. It took this masterpiece for me to realize that my view of the world was horribly obscured B.U.T.D. (Before Understanding Three Dimensions). This is a life altering work of brilliance, form first dimension to third.

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the greatest book of the genre written.......2000-02-05

Upon my reading of the book, I took much time to contemplate the intricacies of the genious of the Authors. Especially Jerry Leisure, who, in my opinion, possesses one of the greatest minds of the century. I recomend this book to anyone who is interested in this subject matter.

1 out of 5 stars don't buy this book.......2000-01-19

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - Pleasure to read.......2007-09-11

This could have been dry subject matter, but it was both interesting and useful. As an avid designer that dabbles in photography, I found this to be a great book.

      4 out of 5 stars Good deal.......2006-11-03

The book is more than perfect, its content, the way its written. It was right on time with a big discount, but had a corner a little wrinkled.

5 out of 5 stars Still an invaluable resource.......2006-08-22

I can't remember the first time I read this book, decades ago. Although it's quite dated in light of the advancements in digital photography in recent years, this is still the first reference to check for information about the first 140 years of photography. Even with Wikipedia available, this is the book I check for information. I happened to live in Rochester near the end of his time as curator of George Eastman House, and got to see first hand his influence on the medium. Newhall's book will remain on my shelf for as long as I am interested in photography.

      4 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2004-06-03

As a student, I was forced to buy this book during my 2 year tenure at photography school. It remains one of the most comprehensive, detailed and well written references on the history of photography. History books can be a little "dry" to read but this one is exceptionally well written and covers a vast amount of ground in an admirable fashion.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read.......2003-11-30

If you're even remotely interested in photography and its development, this book is a wonderful way to learn about it. It details the emergence of all the important photographic processes with just enough technical detail to be interesting and not so much as to be overwhelming. There are many pictures in it that provide examples and show how images changed over the years. It also includes the personal aspects of this history and how photography has affected our culture. The writing is smooth and easy to read. In short, I highly recommend it; you won't be disappointed.

          Book Description

A unique survey of photography from its origins until now From a delivery boy to one of the most important industrialists in American history, George Eastman's career developed in a particularly American way. The founder of Kodak died in 1932, and left his house to the University of Rochester. Since 1949 the site has operated as an international museum of photography and film, and today holds the largest collection of its kind in the world. The continually expanding photography collection contains over 400,000 images and negatives - among them the work of Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen, Ansel Adams and others - as well as 23,000 cinema films, five million film stills, one of the most important silent film collections, technical equipment and a library with 40,000 books on photography and film. The George Eastman House is a pilgrimage site and a place of worship for researchers, photographers and collectors from all over the world.

This volume shows in chronological order the most impressive images and the most important developments in the art of light that is photography. It provides in its huge collection and themes a unique survey of the medium from its origins until now.

                        Book Description

The Fir Domain are one of the fiercest and most troublesome Tribes of the Earth Goddess. Whereas the Sessair and Finians will go to war as soon as look at you, the Fir Domain are just as eager for trouble but always with an eye to the main chance. Likewise, they can be as cunning as the Tribe of the Shadows, but are quite prepared to apply that intelligence and planning to a frontal assault or even an entire war, rather than relying on night raids. If they cannot profit from war, and with minimal casualties, they have no great interest in it. Of course, this could be long-term profit - taking over fertile farmland can be better in the long run than capturing a rich town or fort. The Fir Domain are also known as the Tribe of the Growling Shields for their fearsome battle feat of shield-growling, when they use specially shaped metal shields to amplify their war-cries. This feat reveals a great deal about the tribe in general for they are geared towards defense, and their warriors make great use of shields. Yet they use the shields for offence too - the shield growl instills terror into the hearts of any who face them in battle. This combination of attack and defense runs through many of the tribe's activities in both peace and war-time. Even their traders are cautious, yet quick to take advantage of any opening. However, their focus on defense should not be taken as an indication that the Fir Domain are cowards. A Fir Domain warrior sees his shield as his most crucial piece of equipment, but it is closely followed in importance by his sword or spear. Once the Tribe of the Growling Shields has decided they will fight, they advance in an implacable, well-drilled mass, almost as well organized as the skull-swords. The Fir Domain themselves consider that charging into battle is a sign of weakness and fear, not strength - so far as they are concerned, their more considered approach, even under a hail of javelins and sling-stones, demonstrates true courage.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Guide to Achieving Inner Peace.......2001-12-14

With life's complications weighing on our shoulders it is only natural to seek ways to simplify and improve the quality of our lives and those that surround us. Such methods are described in this wonderfully written book. Through the simplistic process of mentoring, knowledge is unselfishly shared with others, creating an unmeasurable positive impact on their lives. Unknowingly, in return, our lives are positively impacted as well. The author reinforces that our own personal growth begins with encouraging growth in others. The message, although very elementary, has had a profound effect on my relationship building skills with my family, co-workers, and friends.

4 out of 5 stars Tao and Mentoring.......2000-03-26

In our fast-paced, everchanging world, Mentoring The Tao of Giving and Receiving Wisdom, is a very welcomed and insightful book. Its style is Humanistic, it emphasizes Humanism, for Humanity - the book was truly Human. It begins humble with " emptiness, as a precondition for receptivity in the process of giving." For the Tao mentoring process is created by "the natural movement of expansion (learning) and empty (teaching) on part of each individual." (pg. 5)

The feeling is that of being the authors personal audience with its memorable use of the "power of the narrative." In which one sees the emphasis on growing together and the journey of the relationship rather than the mechanics of the outcome. Through stories of past Chinese sages, the beauty of exploration is once again discovered. i especially enjoyed the section on Attentiveness and how "Tao mentors listen with full attentiveness, not with the ears but with their spirit and heart." (pg. 65) Its mix of rich language and ideas encourages the creation of a safe, empathic environment in which trust and enthusiasm can flourish and thrive.

It then leads to the pragmatics in the direction of sharing this valuable knowledge and IMHO, wisdom. "Rather than begin to change the world, perhaps we may need to be less ambitious, and act on the local, individual, and personal levels." (pg. 159)

The book reads like poetry, with the writing flowing as smoothly as the calligraphy, soothing the soul of the reader. Throughout, the book supports what it sets out to do - to encourage the work of good mentoring. i strongly recommend this book, not just as a quick read but as one that can be referred to many times - in our careers, our lives and our communities.

5 out of 5 stars This Book is a Visual Inspiration........2000-01-24

The elegant Chinese and English calligraphy paints a fluid picture of the ancient poetical relationship of the mentor and protégé.

Unlike many writings on the subject, Haung and Lynch, capture the essence of the mentor. "Tao Mentoring", is a process of where both the mentor and protégé benefit. This book illustrates the flowing motion of the spiritual qualities that embody this relationship. "Tao Mentoring is a two-way circular dance that provides opportunities for us to experience both giving and receiving without limitation and fears."

The book is split into three chapters: The first chapter begins with the eight philosophical petals of Tao, each beautifully illustrated. Jing Hwa --The Golden Flower, Jing (gold)- transformation and transcendence of the individual. Hwa (flower)- the blossoming of the ultimate "thousand petaled lotus". The eight petals of Tao are: Wu Ming- The Neutralization of Duality, Tui Shou- The dance of Pushing Hands, Wu Ji- The Empty Space of Wisdom, Gu Shen- The Spirit of the Valley, Wu Dao- The Dancing Wu Ji Mentors, Wu Wei- The Movement of Tao Mentoring, Hao Jan Zi Ch'i- The Expansive Spirit, Dao Ying- The Ideal Mentoring Relationship,

The second chapter gives an overview of the Virtues of Tao Mentoring. Wang Tao- Cultivating the Virtues of Tao Mentoring, Wang- Virtue and Tao- the way. The topics include: Virtues of the Heart: "Those who follow the Tao, with truth and fulfillment in their hearts, are indeed virtuous." Virtues of the Soul: "..inspire us to attend to the intricate details and mundane realities on the path of the mentor."

The third chapter: Tashun- The Great Harmony Humble Visions for a Harmonious World The final chapter sums up the potential for applications of the "Tao Mentoring Method". The book ends with thoughts of encouraging harmony and balance, the natural order of all things. The authors bring the concepts full circle emphasizing how to "cultivate dynamic relationships in all areas of life".

Mentoring The TAO of Giving and Receiving Wisdom Chungliang Al Huang and Jerry Lynch

This book reminds of us that there is beauty and poetry in mentoring and that it truly is an art. Through the use of Chinese and English calligraphy, the wisdom and warmth of the relationship between Huang and Lynch is richly translated onto paper for all of us to learn from. The blend of Tao wisdom from Chinese classics and modern insight and experience is what forms the new model referred to as Tao mentoring. While the book might lack the detail, analysis, or specific instruction some lust for or expect in a book related to business and mentoring, it eloquently points out that each relationship of our lives is related to the key principles of mentoring. The book then provides explanation and art for each principle. It also invites us to add our own through reflection and practice. Mentoring, The Tao of Giving and Receiving Wisdom is rich with simple and critical exploration of Tao mentoring--a mutually beneficial process of guiding and growing together.

Through art (both in calligraphy and words) the book uses wonderful stories and quotes to demonstrate key elements of Tao mentorship. Included among the key elements are: Each mentor must be a mentoree and vice versa. Trust, non-judgement and other principles related to the heart and soul are essential for effective and honest mentorship. There is joy and reward in the journey itself, it not always found in just reaching the goal.

This is a must read for anyone wanting to be mindful of effective, harmonious mentoring. The principles are universal and a welcome refresher. The art and quick, simple read also make the book a treasure to be able to revisit from time to time.

I especially liked the reference to natural elements in relation to mentoring.

"According to the Tao, the best relationships are like water; they benefit all things and do not compete with them. Water is a natural element that ultimately changes the shape of whatever touches in a satisfying, positive way."

5 out of 5 stars The Essence of Mentoring and a way of Life.......2000-01-24

Mentoring: The TAO of Giving and Receiving Wisdom By Chungliang Al Huang and Jerry Lynch

Mentoring: The TAO of Giving and Receiving Wisdom offers a fresh approach and explanation to what sometime seems to be difficult work. It discusses the relationship between the mentor and the mentoree as a dance that is accomplished between two people in an effort to gain wisdom and knowledge. To become a good mentor one must first experience what it is like to be a good mentoree. It is apparent that the two authors have achieved and practice a level of mentor/mentoree as you read through the background and explanation of what is called the "dance".

The book starts out by describing Jing Hwa - the Golden Flower of Tao Mentoring. Here the Golden Flower and its eight petals symbolize the essence of Tao. These eight petals represent the "building blocks, or cornerstones, of the Tao mentoring philosophy".

In the second and third sections of this book, Virtues of the Heart and Virtues of the Soul, powerful Chinese characters are used to invoke emotions and meanings. I found myself staring into and analyzing each character. In Virtues of the Heart words such as emptiness, humility, self-acceptance and integrity were used to emphasize 'the personal bond between two kindred spirits in the Tao mentoring relationship'. Where as in the Virtues of the Soul ideas such as modeling, guidance, empathy and nurturance were used to "prepare us to confront the conflicts, doubts, failures, paradoxes, and adversities of life while giving us the strength to develop the self in the process".

In the last section, Tashun - Humble Visions for a Harmonious World, the authors discuss the potential affects of Tao Mentoring on the individual and potentially the world.

From the moment you pick up this book you are drawn into the subject matter. From the unfinished edges of the pages to the use of calligraphic Chinese characters throughout the book, a sense of great work and understanding is present. The concepts in this book can be used in everyday life as well as becoming a better Mentor/Mentoree. This book is to be read and experience again and again.

I purchased this book to give me more information on the science of scuba diving for my Dive Con and Dive Instructor courses.

The book gives detailed information on the gas laws, decompression theory as well as information on various forms of diving from contaminated water, tri mix, nitrox etc. The book is very well written and very clear.

I have the printed versions as well as the CD ROM; the CD has the distinction of being user unfriendly to the point that it is little more than a ($$$)coaster.
After attempting to view the CD on no less than 6 different computers, I finally obtained "back door" opening instructions from the NTIS and was successful, though it did take repeated attempts to get it to respond. The folks at the NTIS explained that the anti-copy encryption used on the CD was responsible for preventing the CD from being opened for viewing.

To sum things up, the paper version gets 5 stars, the CD a zero.

UPDATE: The NTIS has come out with a new CD that works like a charm. THANK YOU!!

5 out of 5 stars This is THE Diving Bible!.......2001-11-10

This is by far the most comprehensive publication on Dive related topics I have ever seen. It is a well organized manual that goes into great detail on every topic. The manual itself is a work of art. Each page is high quality glossy paper full of excellent diagrams and illustrations. I started reading it and can't put it down. A great addition to your dive library.

This is one of the classic textbooks for college classes on Native American history. The book is appropriate for either an introductory class on Native American history, or a more advanced class. The book covers the major topics of importance to both natives and non-natives over the course of 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s, such as tribal rights, gaming, Bureau of Indian affairs, treaties, schooling of native children, and compensation to Native Americans. The book is divided into major sections that cover the history of native - non-native relations in the US and in the land that eventually became the US. There is minimal mention of native americans in Mexico or Canada. Overall, a decent book, though I would get the newer edition. The second editor of this book, Peter Iverson, teaches at my university, Arizona State University, and is one of the most often-recognized teachers at this school.
