Customer Reviews:
Great homes.......2007-02-07
After reading the book I concluded I have zero hope of building one and I need to contact the author to build it for me. Brilliant brouchure for his company. I would take off stars for the flagrant selling but you know what it is just that good a book on the subject and the fact is its hard work and he is good at it. Hell just buy the book and have them build it.
A book about very, very big houses.......2003-02-05
This book contains wonderful pictures of homes that are mostly 5,000 sq ft and larger. With one exception it completely ignores fine smaller timberframe homes. I was reminded more of ski lodges than homes by the places featured. But the pictures are nice and if a 5,000 sq ft plus size house is what you're interested in I suppose this book has some interesting ideas.
A Must if you are thinking of building a Timber Frame.......2001-08-06
Whether you are going to act as general contractor, or hire it all out, this book is a great over view of all of the aspects of building a Timber Frame. While not dwelling in great detail, it has lots of drawings, photos, and descriptions, to acquaint the reader with construction techniques, electrical and plumbing considerations, and room layouts in a typical Timber Frame home. Definitley another fine book from Mr. Benson.
An honest and complete.......2000-06-09
This is by far the best of several books I purchased on building timber frame homes. I started with a list of questions about shrinkage, sound proofing, electrical, plumbing, etc. and found clear concise answers to all of them through text, drawings, and photos.
I trust experts (like this author) who talk about the mistakes they've made and show me how to avoid them. He presents options and if you decide to pick the lower rated ones, he describes the likely consequences and how to minimize them.
great resource.......1999-12-24
This book is an excellent guide to the craft of timberframing and complete house design and finishing. I have just finished building my own red oak timber framed house in Tedds back yard here in New Hampshire and found many valuable hints and tips throughout this book, especially liked the sections on plumbing and wiring which can be a challenge in a timber frame house. I also agree with another reviewer that the quality of the book is excellent and deserves a place on your coffe table for guests to peruse. To top it all off Tedd is a very honorable and genuine person who espouses the inherent charms of living in a well crafted timber frame house better than any other books or articles I have read on the subject. Every day in my new home is a real delight and I never get tired of viewing the fine joinery throughout the house. Benson Woodworking also has an excellent web site to examine much of the steps in building a timber frame house. Also for those of you who enjoy the photos in this book , Tedd has a brand new book out showing dozens of homes they have built in the past in beautiful photographic form.

Book Description
Roger Ballen (b.1950) challenges the ways in which we perceive the reality' of photography. His striking, ambiguous images of people, animals and objects posed in mysterious, cell-like rooms occupy the grey area between fact and fiction, blurring the boundaries between documentary photography and art forms such as painting, theatre and sculpture. This latest body of work, made over the last four years, is a product of the decades Ballen has spent working with and photographing the common folk of rural and suburban South Africa.

Fine piece of work!.......2003-12-08
Mr. Palmiotti here at his best! Great character development & fierce pacing throughout. A must read that I recommend in the highest order.
A Must-Buy!.......2003-12-08
I have all the issues of 21 Down already in comic form but I had to get this as a graphic novel. Its an amazingly compelling story that will draw you in with beautiful art and excellent storytelling. What more could you want?
I'll be buying a few more for friends this holiday season!
Mesmerizing........2003-12-08
21 DOWN: THE CONDUIT is akin to watching two cars instants before they collide head-on-you just know they're going to hit, but there's something in you that prohibits you from turning away. Palmiotti, Gray and Saiz manage to capture that same feeling with Preston Kills, a guy who not only sees people's final moments before they die, but has more reason to dread his birthday than anyone else on Earth. As Preston is drawn ever closer towards his own inevitable fate, you're simply forced to follow him along and see how it will all unfold. Hands-down, 21 DOWN: THE CONDUIT is one of the very best pieces of fiction this year. And it makes a GREAT birthday present!
Great Book.......2003-11-13
I read the 21Down tpb on Tuesday and I can't explain how much I was blown away reading it in collected form. I loved the series as a monthly- but I read it again and I guess now I paid more attention to dialogue and character than before (and I did pay a lot of attention). Simply put, I'd put this in the small category of "best tpbs of the year" and one of my favorite comics of all time. Every page, every WORD was overflowing with character introspection and telling me SOMETHING MORE about the characters involved. I actually care what happens to these two, not because they're nostalgic favorites of old or cool concepts, but because they're genuinely enthralling characters involved in an engrossing storyline. Every issue/chapter existed for a reason- there was no filler- and instead of copious splash pages, I was greated with lots of forward movement, through dialogue and action. Characters acted like real people, not like "comic" people and every event had reprecussions.
21Down is unique in the comic market not because of it's fresh takes on super powers and conspiracies, but because it TRULY puts character and character development first, without losing an interesting and intelligent plot.

Book Description
Children who molest children are society's dark little secret. That's exactly why lay persons, as well as professionals, should read this chilling portrait of male adolescent sex offenders. It is an authentic silhouette of their characteristics and conduct which help the reader, indeed, beware. Daring to peek into this shadowy corner of histories and anecdotes will result in sharpened insight into predatory behavior that devastates the innocence of childhood. That insight, fueled by the information in this book, can help preserve a precious purity. This personal account gifts the reader with: Thinking errors in male adolescent sex offenders. Ways to teach morality to children who have already committed immoral acts. More than 350 myths and faulty beliefs which adolescent sex offenders act on. Cautions to the general public about signs to watch for . Details of essential treatment which must be internalized if the offender is to return to society. Some information in this book is probably available in professional journals and books, but not in an anecdotal style which the author has deliberately adopted to encourage generalized readership about this serious social issue.

ASIN: 185532699X
Release Date: 1998-06-15 |
Book Description
This book details the English army that Henry V led back into France in 1417 to conquer Normandy and again take the war to the French. In 1422 Henry died, and was succeeded by the nine-month-old Henry VI: by 1429 English fortunes were in decline, but more than 20 years of warfare would pass before the English were driven from France. This period of the war is often ignored in preference to the battles of Crécy, Poitiers and Agincourt but in fact is the decisive phase of the conflict. This title examines the army that fought these campaigns in detail looking at its composition, organisation, equipment and weaponry.

Book Description
Within the chronological framework of implantation, maturity, and transition, Atlantic American Societies traces the history of European expansion in the Americas. Suggesting a shift in the traditional analysis of history away from nationally defined boundaries, Alan Karras and John McNeill treat the Atlantic world as a whole, encouraging the reader to see the larger inter-imperial issues which governed behavior in both the new world and the old. Emphasizing the links between Africa, Europe, and the Americas, the authors outline the process of transatlantic intercultural integration that began after the voyages of Columbus.
Providing readers with a mechanism for viewing inter-imperial rivalries, Atlantic American Societies focuses not only on the commercial and demographic history and military and economic interaction between metropolitan regions and their colonies, but also on the cultural components of American expansion. Combining a variety of approaches, from epidemiological to labor history and ethnohistory, this volume explores the societies of the Atlantic region and their blend of Amer-Indian, West European, and West African influences. Collecting some of the best recent scholarship from African, Latin American, and North American sources, Atlantic and American Societies opens a new perspective on this region.

Customer Reviews:
Great for Science.......2006-08-13
This book is easy for my 6 yr old to understand. We are using it for our science book and she is loving it!!
Most excellent purchase!.......2006-04-15
I actually first looked at this book just because it only had a one star rating and I wondered why. When I learned that, it was because it had children's level sex ed I bought it immediately. My 5 year old was trying to figure out what a birthday was for and I needed a little visual assist to help him understand that he came from my belly on that day. Really, the sex ed of this book is perfect for small children. It shows a big blow up of an egg surrounded by sperm. It has two basic anatomy drawings of what is in a woman and what is in a man with no deep detail; they are small and dull in comparison to the Sperm and Egg multicolor blow up of a microscope picture. It shows on the next two pages a baby developing in the womb. It's just drawings and it has an ultra sound of the profile of a baby's head. Nothing about how the baby gets in there, nothing about how it comes out, just very basic things a small child can understand (I highly recommend it for the 5 year old set). It is very colorful and shows much of the anatomy in relation to children's bodies.
The whole book is wonderful. It is drawings and pictures of all the major systems of the body. They are detailed enough that you can see all the stuff that is under our skin, but it is written simply. On the muscles of the face, rather than name them they say, "These muscles make you blink, these muscles make you smile." Very kid friendly and related to questions kids will ask. This is good for a beginner reader who is old enough to be curious about how the body works. It also has little boxes at the bottom of many pages with experiments that kids can do to give hands on visuals about the lessons presented. My son has been fascinated by it since it arrived and looks through it at least once a day. He spends time marveling at the pictures and how cool people are on the inside. There is nothing gruesome in it though it does broach things like available artificial body parts. I guess it could be useful in explaining Grandma or Grandpa's operation. What I like the most is, it has real anatomical pictures with captions that are kid friendly and easy to understand. I highly recommend this for small children so long as you are comfortable with them knowing about all of their body parts and not just some of them.
Reproductive chapter is way to descriptive.......2005-09-16
My 9 year old son, a forth grader, brought this book home from his school library. If you could have seen his face and then mine as he read aloud the chapter on reproduction. I would not have to say anymore about the book. Let's just say I now have to have "The Talk" with my nine year old son, when this should have waited until he was at least 11 or 12. I thought it was completely inappropriate, very explicate and way to descriptive to put this info in a childs book. The front cover is very misleading, it makes it look like just another fun human body book that he likes to read. It also should not be called the "First" Human Body Encyclopedia, it should say the "Middle School Childs" Human Body Encyclopedia. This would have been a great book, full of great information for any child to read if not for that one chapter. I'm very upset.

Customer Reviews:
It's our great big book of everything..........2007-10-05
As a homeschool mother, this book has been an excellent tool in introducing my 6 year old and 3 year old to the animal kingdom. As my 6 yr old has said, "it has everything." As an adult I may have choosen to include more, but for my daughter, it is like front row seats to the zoo. It has large pictures, simple descriptions, and kindergarten age experiments as well. We have already made a bug habitat, a frog habitat, crafted a paper fish with scales, and made a mobile food chain, and that was in the first two weeks. I find myself wanting to teach science all the time. It really is a great book to enjoy with my daughters.
My 2 year old loves this one.......2007-01-19
The thing that makes this encyclopedia of animals far superior to some of the others for young children is the way that the animals are arranged. It is not alphabetical, there are mammals, birds, reptiles, etc. This makes great sense to my toddler and is a good tool for helping her to understand classification. There is a Table of contents and an Index for quick look up. This is a great first animal encyclopedia that we read again and again and that will probably be well loved for years to come.

Book Description
Your World is designed to help today's youngsters find the answers to their many questions, either by themselves, or with the help of a parent or educator. With its thematic arrangement, Your World is fun and intuitive to use. Information is presented in context, a vital aid to comprehension for this age group. Many join-in activities and simple experiments - such as making a miniature erupting volcano or creating an imitation aquarium - invite participation. From Prehistoric Life to People and Places, and from Transportation to The Universe, the book covers all the subjects that spark a child's curiosity. Simple captions, step-by-step illustrations, clear text, and an easy-to-read index make this a book for children to grow with, and one that will prepare them for the next level of reference and nonfiction books.
Customer Reviews:
great !.......2007-06-08
Exactly what it seemed to me on Amazon site. Good big book, a bit heavy perhaps for a little kid, but it could be better that way. Something like the sum of a world, as much it is possible. Clear, simple et complete (maybe a bit difficult for a kid under 3. but we can wait...), with many good-looking pictures.
Great book to answer the "whys".......2002-08-16
My preschooler has just begun the constant "whys", "hows", "whens" etc. This book has great pictures and text to explain why some things happen and how things work. While some of the text may go over his head right now, I think we will use this book into elementary school so we'll get our good out of it. There are also some simple activities to go along with some of the subjects to use for hands on learning. It covers just about every subject that a preschooler is going to encounter. So far it has been a great resource to have at our house.

Mom of one smart son.......2000-05-16
Excellent book to help parents answer all of those "why's" that children come up with. Not only facinating for the little ones but Mom and Dad have fun re-learning all kinds of facts. A must have reference book!
