Customer Reviews:
Not a very good collection of plans.......2007-07-01
We are going to hire an architect and contractor to build a home and bought 3 megabooks of plans from Amazon to get some ideas. This was the worst of the lot though by no means as awful as "the house you build" book. My wife and I just didn't like many of the plans. The organization isn't really too useful as the plans are grouped by style, not size (nobody who is building a 3000sf home wants to parse through 1500sf cottages). The color photos are nice and I gave the book 2 stars because there are helpful hints for construction and design interspersed throughout. Check my other reviews for the home books we recommend.
Great book for me to build my dream........2006-11-06
The problem I have not got enough bucks.
A Wish Book for adults.......2006-03-10
We couldn't agree on the type of house we wanted so we spent hours inspecting the hundreds of house plans in this book, mentally taking ideas from one and adding them to others. Having color pictures of the finished product makes it easy to identify those you like. In the end we were able to compromise; I gave up the two-story idea for the more practicle one-story, and we've created a wing for privacy. Rather than buy individual plans we'll take our cut & paste ideas to an architech (someday). If nothing else, browsing through the book initiated a lot of conversation about our lifestyle what's important to us as individuals. Great fun.
Title is accurate........2005-10-29
When I bought this book I just thought it was one of those magazine style things printed on cheap paper.Wrong! This book is huge! Colour photos and colour illustrations throughout.Floor plans of all types, almost. Not many homeplans here to suit the lower budgets.
Overall, this book is the best.Great quality, good value and its huge. There are a lot of homes here so you will find something you like. Its worth the money.
Close to "Ultimate".......2005-04-12
Yes, I gave this book 5 stars, but there are somethings I wish that were added. Those include plans for homes 4500sqft+. Most are 2500-3500. The book could use more of the in-depth design areas (Like Master Bedroom, Kitchen, etc...) There are "tips" spread throughout the plans, and I really enjoy the color photos with room specs on the floor plans. It can keep my 5 stars, but please add the above items to keep getting those stars in future additions.

Customer Reviews:
One of the few house design books you need.......2007-04-04
Book store (and Amazon) shelves in the architecture section are filled with coffee table books with large pictures of homes we can never afford to own, or homes that look more like a museum show case than a place where people actually live. This book is different.
It gets you in the right mind set for starting to think about designing your own home. Practical, with lots of images that contain useful suggestions. Start with this book, then buy others.
This edition is a comlete re-write from the version I bought in 2002.
great book.......2007-02-15
great resource information mostly for UK though (i think)
pictures and ideas are solid i just like to skim thru it for ideas
everything you can imagine related to the home is in there somehow
The Ultimate House Book by Conran et al........2004-08-21
This book is an excellent reference for decorating a private
home. It describes flexible living quarters, work at home and
family quarters. There is a basic budget model, as well as
provision for more elaborate and expensive customizations.
The work contains an extensive materials directory which is
useful for deciding upon the material components and pricing
structure. Both form and function are described in detail.
There are contrasting arguments for employing vulcanized
rubber, plastics and marble. The book is excellent if it is
utilized wisely in connection with planned home designs.

Customer Reviews:
This includes nearly every form you would ever need.......2007-03-13
From unit studies to state requirements, this planner has it all. All of the forms are very easy to use, and can be adapted easily to customize them to your family and student's needs.
Excellent Resource.......2006-12-01
I really enjoy this book and it has helped me greatly, in getting things a little more organized! This is my first year I have begun homeschooling, and honestly, I am so happy I ran across this when I was starting out. It gives a very good outline of what requirements I should keep in mind for the grade level of my child, and is a reusable source for planning weekly, monthly and yearly schedules.
A word of caution though - this isn't a book - rather it is a binder. It is quite simplistic really, and you could find all of the information on your own just by looking at the internet for a couple of hours. However, this is already put together for you. Also, this is a book I would ONLY reccomend for people just STARTING OUT on the homeschooling path. At first homeschooling can be very overwhelming... and this brings a lot of information in a condensed form... I feel by your second year though, you would already have your own system in place.. and this book wouldn't be helpful then.
Very helpful and complete! (for first year homeschoolers)
It's okay but not super.......2006-04-05
It definitely has some things in it that are helpful but I was disappointed that it appears to be photocopied. I feel it useful just not overly exciting. I'm planning on using it for next years homeschool period and have looked through it but have not used it as of yet. I think it does have a great checklist for things your children need to know at certain stages. Remember to use it loosely though because that's what homeschooling is all about.
Make Your Own........2005-12-23
This was not a very useful resource or practical planner. The designers really should step away from the one-size-fits-all strategy and let users buy packages of the specific pages they want to use - like Franklin Covey time managers, for example.
I bought this book when I was THINKING about homeschooling, so it SOUNDED great, but once I began homeschooling and realized how many different ways there are to do it, I also realized that no single planner could ever be "the ultimate homeschool planner" for all families.
I have used just ONE of the pages in this book, and I had to make my own photocopies - the book just provides the master!!
You are MUCH better off tailoring a curriculum planner to your own specific needs. If you can't make a word document look the way you want, then use a ruler and notebook paper and photocopy your page. Get a 3 ring binder and some dividers, and some of those page reinforcers to reinforce the holes, and you will be set. You can also have the kids design the cover to slip in the binder if you want something a bit more decorative.
This is a great resource for new homeschool moms.......2005-09-07
I bought this notebook about 2 years ago when my daughter was 3 years old. This is a great guide and for the price you get a lot of time saving tips, techniques, and links to other resources. I would highly recommend it to parents who are considering homeschooling and need a map of what to expect, including forms and other awesome resources. Could most of the forms be created in a word processor or speadsheet? Yes. Even if that is what you are planning to do this notebook gives you a great idea of what should be included. If you have been homeschooling for years, then this may not be the ultimate book for you, but I still think you will benefit from the information.

Louis Massignon: The Crucible of Compassion........2001-08-01
Massignon's name rings familiar to few English speakers but this French scholar of Islam who lived from 1883 to 1962 was perhaps the most influential Western scholar of Islam in this century. His far-reaching impact can be seen not just in today's university classrooms but also in American foreign policy.
Massignon had a most active life for a scholar, as Gude shows in her well-written and judicious biography. It included the excavation of an Iraqi fort, near-execution on a Turkish steamer, a passionate homosexual love affair, military combat in the first world war and a refusal to hand over the keys to a Bordeaux town in the second. Massignon experienced a dramatic conversion from secularism to Catholicism at age 24, ordination as a married Catholic priest at the age of 66, and arrest for political activities at the age of 75. He enjoyed friendships with such figures as Martin Buber, Paul Claudel, Charles de Foucauld, T. E. Lawrence, and François Mauriac.
Massignon forwarded too many eccentric ideas to found a school of thought or have his views accepted in their totality, but his deeply-held sympathy for Islam had immense influence both among fellow specialists (thanks to his unique scholarly accomplishments) and more broadly among the French intellectual elite (thanks to his long history of political activism). Massignon's writings and organizing won almost no practical victories, but his passionate determination to find common ground for Christians and Muslims have profoundly shaped the way several generations of sophisticated Westerners respond to that faith. Current American policy toward Islam bears the clear impress of his thinking.

Book Description
Family Business: United We Stand-Divided We Fall is a comprehensive study of the dual relationship that exists in all family owned and operated companies. This twofold nature of being a member in a family and then transferring that membership into employment in the family business forms an alliance that is supposedly entered into for mutual benefit.
It is healthy role behavior that sustains a functional family-run business. The emotional atmosphere within the company, formed through the family's pattern of relating, will enhance or destroy all that is initially well-intended. Give yourself permission to be open to understanding and subsequently to defining your family's "themes."

When the first American Marines marched into Vietnam in March 1965, historical consensus holds, they were there because there was no alternative. President Johnson's hand had been forced by the right-wing hawks and the Communists. The general public wholeheartedly supported defending South Vietnam, as did our allies in Europe.
That's not really the case, argues Fredrik Logevall, in Choosing War: The Lost Chance for Peace and the Escalation of War in Vietnam. His provocative thesis--that Kennedy, Johnson, Rusk, McNamara, and Bundy chose to escalate American involvement when the war could have been avoided--is well supported by careful archival research and newly declassified documents. Logevall focuses on what he calls "The Long 1964"--18 critical months between August 1963 and February 1965, at the end of which President Johnson made the decision to "Americanize" the war. Despite many opportunities to negotiate a settlement, the Kennedy and the Johnson administrations were opposed to early negotiation--in part because they were worried about being seen as "soft on Communism" before the 1964 presidential election. Where this book is most interesting--and, in the long run, most valuable--is in Logevall's careful study of the conflict and American policymaking in international context. Looking at how the war played in London, Paris, Ottawa, Tokyo, Moscow, and Beijing--not just in Hanoi and Washington--reveals that even our allies had grave doubts about the probable outcome of a war. Both our allies and our enemies understood that "the Vietnam conflict's importance derived in large measure from its potential to threaten their own political standing--and their party's standing--at home." Compelling and controversial, Logevall's book is an excellent addition to the literature on the Vietnam War. --Sunny Delaney
Book Description
In one of the most detailed and powerfully argued books published on American intervention in Vietnam, Fredrik Logevall examines the last great unanswered question on the war: Could the tragedy have been averted? His answer: a resounding yes. Challenging the prevailing myth that the outbreak of large-scale fighting in 1965 was essentially unavoidable, Choosing War argues that the Vietnam War was unnecessary, not merely in hindsight but in the context of its time.
Why, then, did major war break out? Logevall shows it was partly because of the timidity of the key opponents of U.S. involvement, and partly because of the staunch opposition of the Kennedy and Johnson administrations to early negotiations. His superlative account shows that U.S. officials chose war over disengagement despite deep doubts about the war's prospects and about Vietnam's importance to U.S. security and over the opposition of important voices in the Congress, in the press, and in the world community. They did so because of concerns about credibility--not so much America's or the Democratic party's credibility, but their own personal credibility.
Based on six years of painstaking research, this book is the first to place American policymaking on Vietnam in 1963-65 in its wider international context using multiarchival sources, many of them recently declassified. Here we see for the first time how the war played in the key world capitals--not merely in Washington, Saigon, and Hanoi, but also in Paris and London, in Tokyo and Ottawa, in Moscow and Beijing.
Choosing War is a powerful and devastating account of fear, favor, and hypocrisy at the highest echelons of American government, a book that will change forever our understanding of the tragedy that was the Vietnam War.
Customer Reviews:
A Very Excellent Work.......2007-09-24
In Choosing War, Mr. Logevall presents a very cogent and deeply reasoned assessment of America's entry into the futile and eventually tragic landscape of an Americanized war in Vietnam. There are so many commonly held beliefs about the necessity of America's involvement there was to prevent the spread of Communism, that it is refreshing, but painful, to read about how and why America went so wrong - and how many chances we had to change direction. It is most infuriating to see the steady drumbeat of the military generals and like-minded advisors twisting and subverting the information coming out of Vietnam that was shifted to show that American military might was making a positive and meaningful difference in pursuit of our goals for a non-communist South, knowing full well this was not the case. As in JFK and Vietnam [by John Newman], it paints a frightening picture of how at the mercy of others are the president's choices.
A most interesting and prescient comment occurs in the final chapter and paragraph of the book that equates lessons unlearned from Vietnam allowing similar mindsets to erupt, engaging America in a similarly foolish military incursion in a foreign country whose population and conditions we also don't understand.
A very well written, well researched and easily readable book.
A real page-turner.......2006-09-19
This book is well written, well argued, and fascinating. It's especially timely now as we try to understand the forces that led us into the Iraq war. My students liked it too.
Escalation: By whom and why.......2003-04-25
As the war in Vietnam escalated in 1994 and 95, I was a young naïve supporter of the war simply because I believed that whatever it took to stop and fight communism was justified. My first doubts about the justification of this war came when I would hear the causality figures at the end of each week on the nightly news. I can remember these figures e.g. 946 VC killed in the fighting this week; 94 Americans died. I simply did not believe that anyone knew how many VC were killed, and questioned the figures reported including those of American causalities. As things developed, I began to reassess my thoughts about the American involvement in this war. I read McNamara's "In Retrospect," Neil Sheehan's "A Bright Shining Lie," Stanley Karnow's "Vietnam: A History," But it was Fredrik Logevall's "Choosing War," that really gave me the insight to this conflict. It's the most enlightening account of the American involvement in Vietnam I've read to date. Last year I visted Ho Chi Minh City (formally Saigon). This is in itself was more of education than any of the books. It's my recommendation to all who are interested in the American involvement in Vietnam, to read this detailed and comprehensive account.
Choosing War.......2002-05-27
Not only is Professor Logevall an excellent historian...he is an excellent teacher as well! I have taken one of his classes at UC Santa Barbara; they are the best and most popular classes on campus.
Scathing & Illuminating Examination Of Why Vietnam...........2000-10-09
This fascinating, extremely readable, and carefully researched book by historian Frederik Logevall has an intriguing thesis closely paralleling that of several other emerging scholars regarding the origins and prosecution of the Vietnam War. Like David Kaiser's provocative indictment in "American Tragedy; Kennedy, Johnson, & The Origins Of The Vietnam War" of both the military and civilian advisors to Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson, the author presents a damning and quite convincing stream of evidence proving that it was in fact a series of individuals like Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense Dean Rusk, and General William Westmoreland who arrogantly chose to pursue a war that many around them actively questioned and discouraged. The author's careful research shows a flood of documentary evidence indicating that these people and a number of like-minded others, deliberately chose to prosecute a war for which they had good reason to believe would not likely succeed.
Unlike Kaiser in his excellent book, Professor Logevall chooses to concentrate impressively on a critical eighteen-month period spanning from the summer of 1963 to the early winter of 1965, and the fateful steps taken during that period toward a policy of escalation and direct involvement of American combat units. The author contends that any one of a number of important opportunities to step aside were deliberately ignored, often based on important information provided by key insiders such as McNamara. As the record also shows, this information was anything but the disinterested and objective assessment of the political, economic, and military situation on the ground in South Vietnam it was presented as. In this sense both President Kennedy and President Johnson were victims of a quite deliberate campaign of misinformation and self-serving worst-case analysis by Rusk, McNamara, and Westmoreland.
It was in such a poisonous and duplicitous environment that Lyndon Johnson made a fateful series of decisions to escalate the war by "Americanizing" it, something Kennedy before him had quite insistently denied permission to do. The author also argues quite persuasively that both Kennedy and Johnson had stepped away from opportunities for disengaging from the involvement in Vietnam for domestic political reasons, including a concern with being seen as "soft" on communism in the period preceding the coming national elections of 1964. This is substantiated by Johnson's actions after Kennedy's assassination; while secretly initiating actions to escalate the war, Johnson self-consciously campaigned saying exactly the opposite. He understood the potential firestorm American involvement could have for both liberal and conservative criticism, and was therefore careful to mitigate his vulnerability by neutralizing it as a political factor until after the Presidential elections of 1964.
Likewise, once committed to a policy of massive American participation in the war, Johnson feared the personal consequences both domestically and internationally were he to decide to withdraw and admit defeat. Yet world leaders almost uniformly distanced themselves from American involvement, and privately counseled Johnson to "cut and run". In addition, Johnson's own lack of appreciation for the potential damage our involvement in Vietnam might have on international relations resulted in a number of lost opportunities for détente and improvement in relations with both the Soviet Union and China. Based on his own personal frailties and the bad counsel of both his military and civilian advisors, he pursued the single most disastrous course imaginable; further escalation, condemning not only his own domestic program but nearly 60,000 American soldiers to untimely (and absolutely unnecessary) death.
This is am intriguing, insightful, and important book, and the author writes both in an entertaining and accessible style. He mirrors the evidence presented in other recent books such as the aforementioned Kaiser tome, and also in Major H.R. McMaster's absorbing recent book, "Dereliction Of Duty; Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, The Joint Chiefs Of Staff, And The Lies That Led to Vietnam", and handily helps to put the lie to the kind of neo-revisionist saber-rattling of armchair conservatives like Michael Lind ( one wonders if Lind was ever in the military; or if he is a "George W. Bush" kind of born-again macho clebrant of combat who has never had a shot fired at him, an armchair enthusiast who cheered from the sidelines as a passive noncombatant member of the Texas Air National Guard). Gee, let's fly planes over the vacant Texas tundra and we can call ourselves patriots! Lind would have us believe this was all God's work in his silly and wrong-headed narrative "The Necessary War". Since he was likely still in his nappies when the firestorm was raining all over the heads of the more than half million uneducated, largely blue-collar men and women we deployed at any one time to Vietnam, I wonder how he would know. Did he read about it at Yale? "Choosing War", on the other hand, is an excellent and carefully crafted work of scholarship, and one that helps to nail together a much more comprehensive understanding of how it was we were so badly and quite unnecessarily led into this most unfortunate of American wars.

Book Description
Asia-Pacific in the New World Order critically explores the notion that a distinctive regional power bloc is developing, linking countries bordering the Pacific, with East Asia at its core. This student-friendly volume sheds light on the complex interplay between global, regional and national forces which have transformed the Asia-Pacific arena into one of the most vibrant and economically successful regions in the world. Historical narratives alongside geopolitical and geoeconomic perspectives are deployed to examine the shifting pattern of power relations and security structures across the region, set within a wider world context. Key issues addressed include: the primary security problems of the region and how are they being resolved; the dynamic growth of the region, and particularly the rise of China as a challenge to existing structures of world order. The text has a strong interdisciplinary flavor drawing on analytical approaches from international relations, political economy and political geography literature. Authors have been drawn from the Asia-Pacific region and the UK and all are established scholars in their specialist fields.
