This book is a rare but insightful look into the practice of one of the New Urbanist legends. UDA began the pattern book revival a decade ago (and also has a book out describing the process of writing one.) They also are one of the pioneers of the New Urbanist revolution, which, by discarding the fictions of Modernist planning, have rediscovered existing methods and have discovered new methods of creating compact, mixed-use and walkable neighborhoods that were always the basic cellular structure of cities from the dawn of time until just before World War II. We have understood the basic principles again for some time. What this book shows are some of the mechanics of how to do it again.
How to build a great city.......2003-07-18
The architects at Urban Design Associates use war stories and bold illustrations to provide detailed instructions on how to transform a blighted urban area into an aesthetically pleasing community. This Pittsburg-based firm created the architectural plans for city redevelopment in communities from Cincinnati, Ohio to Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Riverside County, California. The book shares UDA's time-tested, 10-part "charrette process."
The charrette brings together local residents, government officials, real estate developers and other stakeholders to guide the design process. Using the existing community's "best addresses" as an ideal, UDA produces a unique pattern book that describes preferred neighborhood building arrangements and architectural styles. The plans emphasize the area's natural features by making parks and public space an integral part of each project.
UDA has one cardinal rule that guides these working sessions: "No matter how many encounters you may have with participants, the first time you meet people, you are asking questions, not giving answers." Judging from the work presented in this full-color manual, they are asking the right questions. Their designs are scaled for pedestrians and they incorporate building sites that can accommodate single-family homes, multi-family residences, civic buildings and commercial space.
The book is stuffed with specifics--everything from consensus building tips to digital filing guidelines. Architects, engineers, planners and developers are the obvious target audience for this trade book. But, new urbanists and city enthusiasts everywhere will also enjoy it as an entertaining and instructive reference.
First Of Its Genre, A Valuable Resource.......2003-02-24
The Pittsburgh-based firm Urban Design Associates has been in practice for nearly 40 years, over the decades accumulating quite a lot of experience in urban design. This is UDA's in-house training manual, polished and augmented for public use. If you are starting out in the urban design field, or are just curious about the methods of a successful firm, this is a good place to begin your investigations.
The first section introduces some basic principles and organizing concepts. Ideas like the "Urban X-Ray" and "Urban Assembly Kit" are easy to understand but at the same time provide a powerful means of evaluating locations and organizing the design process.
The second section, taking up one-third of the book, is a case study of the design process from beginning to site plan. It's really the heart of the manual. This section takes you through information collection, analysis, charrettes, preliminary design, negotiation, and final presentation. UDA can be justifiably proud of their work here, as the site (a housing project in Winston-Salem) was extremely challenging, yet the final plan was quite good from a number of perspectives. You get some idea of the politics, persuasion and patience necessary when working with established residents, officials, engineers and developers.
The following two sections cover pattern books and architecture. These sections are mostly about basic concepts and the firm's standardized methods, which can be dry reading. The information is sound, but presented in a rather generic way, and so is less engrossing than the earlier section. It will be of interest to students wanting to understand how one firm tackles contextual residential design.
In the extensive appendices, the roots of the manual become more apparent. These cover everything from filing system notation to line weight (how to draw a block of houses). Mainly of interest to those wanting to compare office administration procedures, students, and new UDA employees.
The Urban Design Manual delivers the goods in a concise format, focusing on UDA's methods rather than trying to encompass a variety of possible approaches. The illustrations are a treat to look at, and convey at least as much information as the text. The writing is clear and professional, yet also conversational and even a bit lighthearted. Mini "war story" vignettes in the margins bespeak the writers' understated humor. It is the first step-by-step manual of urban design (hopefully the first of many by various authors), and is valuable resource for students and practitioners.
Solid Technical Resource.......2003-02-22
Gindros and Company at UDA distilled the stuff they do every day (-designing buildings, neighborhoods and towns), into a manual for their own new hires. Then they expanded this information into a handbook for publication. The book presents an excellent framework for design work at several scales, from the individual building through the building blocks of great neighborhoods, the street, the block, the public spaces.

Are there two versions?.......2007-04-05
I believe there are two versions to this book. I love'd the other version that I borrowed from a friend and when I got this one and started to re-read it, discovered a different story. Any way, I like this one too and will be searching for the story my friend had. If you have a die hard fairy lover in the family this is a must read. But, be warned, if they are under the age of 10 they must be told no fairies were harmed in the making of the book. My 4 year olds cried for hours when I first got the book and was telling my husband the theme. Written to look like a real diary, it draws you in.

Unlike its Cottington-Archive predecessors "Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Book," "Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy Journal," and "Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells," the Fairy Album is a work entirely by Brian Froud (without Monty Python alumnus Terry Jones taking on any of the writing) that delves into the family history of Angelica Cottington, diarist of the Pressed Fairy Book and sister to the inventor whose contraptions made Strange Stains and Mysterious Smells possible.
The central narrative, told through diary entries of the mysterious Euphemia Cottington, whom Angelica has never met, is wonderful, but I feel Angelica's hastily-scrawled commentary to Euphemia's entries detracted from the story a bit, as they lacked the humourous fluster of the Pressed Fairy Book. the art is brilliant, and i rather like the phtographs and things inserted between the pages and the little envelope stuck to a page (via a squished fairy) at the end, although it took a moment of careful tugging to determine whether or not it's meant to come off so you can read the back as you can with the photograph (it's meant to stay affixed to the page, btw).
If you're the sort who likes to get every book in a series or just a fan of Froud's non-comedic fantasy art, I highly reccomend this book. If you're looking for some Terry-Jonesian comedy to go with your fantasy, however, you might prefer "The Goblin Companion"
A Must Have!.......2003-02-14
I really liked this book. I'm so glad that Brian Froud continued on with the Cottington story. When I first heard about Brian Froud back in the early 90's, it was very difficult to find Lady Cottington's Pressed Fairy's in stock. I had to order it from England. The art is so original, I have just about all of Froud's books. I'm alittle disappointed though that this artist has become mainstream (i.e. Hot Topic). Froud did not disappoint his fans with Lady Cottington's Fairy Album. The storyline was interesting and still original. You have to get this book if you got the first.
Lovely story with a mystery........2003-01-06
This is a truly wonderful book.The art is stunning,and the story captures you from the beginning.I read it in one sitting,and return to it again and again,even though I know the solution of the mystery now.Don't open the envelope in the end until last.I recommend it with all my heart to everyone who like faeries,a good story,and the art of Mr.Froud.I liked both the photographs and the funny and lovely water color paintings,and the different hand-writing of the two girls.

In 1995 I began working with Ben Sivertz, organizing his files and taking care of his sizeable written correspondence. this familiarized me both with the man and his prodigious personal archive containing letters, diaries, speeches, and employment and education records dating back to the beginning of the 20th century. I had the privilege of listening to an oral history colourfully recalled by a man still very much in possession of his faculties and a walking historical treasure. The stories of his life are fascinating and I felt, worthy of record. Over the course of five years a culling of information took the form of an autobiographical book, the writing of which was done by me, sandwiched between Ben's able storytelling and fine editorial ability. This is a joint project in the truest sense.
Ben's life has spanned the century - he was born in Victoria to Icelandic immigrant parents and recalls Victoria's days at the beginning of the last century with valuable clarity. From rather modest origins Ben lived a life in three parts; as a seaman in the last days of wooden sailing ships, as a teacher in the remote northern end of Vancouver Island, as the head of the Naval Training Establishment at King's College in Halifax during the Second World War, and as a government worker who became Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, remembered as one who left behind a progressive legacy of reform in the North. Ben has lived almost four decades since his retirement, outliving his wife and most recently relocating to Mayne Island to pass the remainder of his days surrounded by young and caring relatives.
In this story the reader will attain an understanding of seafaring in the early days on the West Coast, life on Vancouver Island in pre-war years, sailing ship adventures on the Pacific in the twenties, and government service in the halcyon days of External Affairs in the fifties and northern affairs in the same period. It is a story that will delight many of Ben's devoted pupils who came under his tutelage at the Naval Training School in Halifax during WWII, as well as the student of Canadian, and British Columbian history. It is well illustrated with many photographs from Ben's personal collection, as well as copies of newspaper clippings.

This guide is very helpful. I gives you hints, tricks and so forth. It is very easy to understand and I read it whenever I am losing in my season(I am the St.Louis Blues - go Blues! ). Exceptional guide.......2003-01-30
My 8 month old son was diagnosed with CP at 4 months (though we knew there were issues from the beginning due to birth injury). I started reading this book a month ago and am so happy I found it listed as a resource in the book "Children with Cerebral Palsy". The emotions the author feels and shares are so similar and validating that it could not help but to reassure me and to help me not feel so alone. I have wanted to try alternative therapies from the beginning and had only been exposed to cranio sacral therapies. This book is invaluable in that she has already done so much of the research and shares her experiences that it cuts my time down in half and gives me starting points to begin my own research. So many of the things that she shares I had not heard of, but knew in my heart had to exist - she put a name to them. Her ongoing changing feelings and Seth's changes give me an indicator of things to come and things to watch out for, hopefully side-stepping some of the problems she experienced during her journey. I am so grateful for this book!!

Hail Caesar.......2006-10-21
This is the second book by Dodge I have read and it is as good as the first, which was Hannibal. Mr. Dodge goes into fascinating detail of Caesar's campaigns throughout Gaul, Britain, Germania, and finally along the Dalmatian coast against Pompey. Very detailed not only in military tactics but also the political ramifications Caesar caused on the Roman republic. A very fine read.

This book is for those who enjoy ancient history, with an emphasis on military warfare. Dodge rams enough facts and figures down your throat for understanding, but manages at the same time to make it interesting. It is very informative of Caesar's life and the way in which he ran the most dominant army of his time.

Buy this book if you want to learn about how Caesar fought wars. Detailed information about on how he designed defensive perimeters, how he made camp, how long trenches were, etc..
Also includes how he made siege on enemy fortifications and laid waste to way too many peoples.
You will learn the many goods, a few bads, and the one ugly (exterminated a whole race in Gaul) on Caesar.

This book analyzes the relationship between the many and the few in the formation of a republican polity. It studies the case of Buenos Aires in the 1860s and 1870s, when the inauguration of a new national order in Argentina entailed a radical change in the ways of power. By exploring the different forms of participation of the people in the public life of the city, it illuminates a frequently neglected side of the process of construction and legitimization of political power in nineteenth-century Latin American societies. It also provides new historical evidence on the origins of democracy in Argentina, and proposes an interpretation of that process that challenges prevailing views.
The book focuses on two major topics: the history of elections and electoral practices, and the creation and development of a public sphere. Its detailed, and often colorful, description of electoral procedures portrays a dynamic and competitive political life that contradicts traditional interpretations of the history of citizenship in Argentina. The author also argues that elections were not the only major element in the relationship between the many and the few, that these decades witnessed the formation of a public sphere: a space of mediation between civil society and the political realm, where different groups voiced their opinions and directly represented their claims. She studies three aspects of the life of the city that were symptoms of this process: the proliferation of associations, the expansion of the periodical press, and the development of a “culture of mobilization.” The book concludes by assessing how its conclusions offer new clues to the study of the Argentine political system, the history of Latin American democracies, and, more generally, the relations between the many and the few in modern societies.
